PoliticsLagos State CAN Names New Secretariat After First Lady Oluremi Tinubu (Photos) by Slytiger(op): 10:07pm On Feb 24
The Lagos State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria has renamed its permanent secretariat after First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, nearly three decades after operating without an administrative headquarters.

This was disclosed in a statement made available to PUNCH Online on Tuesday, stating that the building named “Senator Oluremi Tinubu CAN Lagos State Secretariat” in Alausa, Ikeja, was officially declared open by the National President of CAN, Daniel Okoh.

Okoh said that the state chapter has demonstrated perseverance and commitment in ensuring that this secretariat becomes a reality.

“I urge all members to remain united and dedicated to the work of Christian leadership in Lagos State,” the CAN President concluded.

In a goodwill message delivered by the representative of the First Lady, Mrs Tinubu said, “The completion of the secretariat ends years of dispute over the land and marks the beginning of a new chapter for Christians in Lagos State.”

A floor of the newly completed complex was dedicated in honour of Iya Aladura General, Dr Oluwaseye Yomi-Sholoye, in recognition of her significant financial support for the project.

The cleric, who is the founder of The New Seraph Evangelical Ministries, described the structure as a “fit home” for Christian leadership in Lagos State.

“For about three decades, CAN did not have a befitting secretariat. Today, we have a beautiful structure that will lift the work of God to the next level. It is God’s doing,” Yomi-Sholoye said.

It was stated that the edifice was completed under the chairmanship of His Lordship Rt. Rev. S.T.V. Adegbite, with the foundation laid on February 17, 2024.

Among Christian leaders present at the event was the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Alfred Adewale Martins, alongside clerics from various denominations.

The complex houses multiple structures named after notable personalities, including the main office block named after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Bishop Stephen Adegbite Hall and Event Centre, and the CAN Chairman’s office named after Senator Tokunbo Abiru.

Speaking at the event, Rt. Rev. Adegbite said, “This secretariat is a symbol of unity and administrative strength. It belongs to all Christians in Lagos State. I urge members to take ownership of the facility and ensure its proper maintenance.”

The Lagos CAN secretariat joins a growing list of public institutions and projects named after the First Lady since the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu in May 2023.

Others include Senator Oluremi Tinubu Renewed Hope Resettlement City, Keffi, Nasarawa State, Senator Oluremi Tinubu Dream Centre at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and Oluremi Tinubu Leather Hub, Lagos.

Following the commissioning, CAN Lagos held its 2026 Annual Interdenominational Divine Service themed “Immanuel: God With Us” (Matthew 1:23) at The Apostolic Church Nigeria, Olorunda, Ketu. At the service, Rev. Dr. Ezekiel Omidina urged Christians to remain steadfast amid economic and social challenges, while prayers were offered for peace, unity, and national development.

The unveiling of the secretariat consolidates CAN Lagos operations under a permanent structure for the first time in nearly 30 years.

Politics2023 ADC Governorship Candidate In Akwa Ibom Endorses Tinubu by Slytiger(op): 8:42am On Feb 22
The 2023 governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Akwa Ibom State, Ezekiel Nya-Etok, has announced his support for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

Mr Nya-Etok also said he would support Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom and the Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Messrs Tinubu, Akpabio, and Eno are all members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mr Nya-Etok, who now serves as the executive director of Estate Services at the Federal Housing Authority (FHA), announced this in a public statement issued on his Facebook page Friday morning, attributing his latest move to a “reasoned and performance-based” political decision.

Mr Nya-Etok, an architect, was appointed to the FHA by President Tinubu on 16 February 2024. At the time of his appointment, he remained a member of the ADC.

According to him, he resigned from the ADC in July 2024, five months after assuming office, choosing to operate as a non-partisan public officer. He said he formally joined the APC in December 2025 after a “careful reflection” on the direction of governance under the Tinubu administration.

“I did not join immediately because I live by conviction. Every public decision I make must be one I can explain clearly, rationally, and respectfully to the people I serve,” he said in the statement.

Structured endorsement meeting
Mr Nya-Etok announced that he would convene a special political consultation meeting in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom, on 21 February 2026, to formally endorse President Tinubu for re-election, Governor Eno for a second term, and Mr Akpabio for the Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District seat.

He said the event would not be a conventional political rally but a structured town hall engagement involving invited delegates from across the 48 villages in Ikot Ekpene.

He said the meeting will feature “clear, data-driven, performance-based reasons” for each endorsement, and participants will also be allowed to ask questions and engage in discussion before returning to their communities.

Shift in political identity
The ADC has been bolstered by the entry of the first and second runners-up in the 2023 presidential election—Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi—along with their supporters.

John Akpanudoedehe, a former senator and the 2023 governorship candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Akwa Ibom, had resigned from the NNPP last year to join the ADC.

The ADC has grown to become a major opposition party in Nigeria.

PoliticsAPC Wins Ungogo, Kano Municipal Bye-Elections by Slytiger(op): 8:25am On Feb 22
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won the by-elections conducted on Saturday to fill the vacant seats for Ungogo and Kano Municipal constituencies in the Kano State House of Assembly.

The seats became vacant following the sudden deaths of the lawmakers representing Ungogo Constituency, Aminu Sa’ad, and Kano Municipal Constituency, Sarki Aliyu Daneji, who passed away on the same day.

In the by-elections, the sons of the deceased lawmakers — Aminu Sa’ad Sa’ad (Ungogo) and Aliyu Nabil Daneji (Kano Municipal) — secured landslide victories over their opponents.

Ungogo Constituency Result
Announcing the result in Ungogo Local Government Area, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer, Prof. Ali Tijjani Abdullahi, declared the APC candidate, Aminu Sa’ad Sa’ad, winner after polling 8,975 votes.

His closest rival, Shua’ibu Hashimu of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), garnered 54 votes.

“Aminu Sa’ad Sa’ad of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” Prof. Abdullahi stated.

Kano Municipal Constituency Result
Similarly, in Kano Municipal, INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Ibrahim Tajo Siraj, declared Aliyu Nabil Daneji of the APC as the winner.

Daneji secured 7,484 votes, defeating his closest challenger, Shehu Ishaq Abdullahi of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), who polled 105 votes.

“Aliyu Nabil Daneji of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” Prof. Siraj said.

The by-elections were conducted to restore representation in the Kano State House of Assembly following the unexpected demise of the former legislators.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Christopher Maikalangu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the elected chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

The collation officer for AMAC, Andrew Abue, said that Mr Maikalangu, who is the incumbent AMAC chairman, was returned elected, having scored the highest number of votes cast — 40,295 out of the total number of valid votes of 62,861 in the election.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) came second with 12,109 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled 3,398 votes.

He added that the number of registered voters in AMAC was 837,338, while the total number of accredited voters was 65,676.

“That Maikalangu of the APC, having certified the requirements of the law is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” Mr Abue said.

According to him, the scores of the 12 political parties and their candidates that contested the AMAC chairmanship election are:

Agbon Vaniah of the Accord (A) – 403 votes;

Nemiebika Tamunomiesam of the Action Alliance (AA) – 108 votes; Paul Ogidi of African Democratic Congress (ADC) – 12,109 votes; Richard Elizabeth of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) – 588 votes;

Christopher Maikalangu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) – 40,295 votes; Eze Chukwu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) – 1,111 votes; Chukwu Promise of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) – 122 votes; Ugoh Michael of the Action Peoples Party (APP) – 32 votes; Thomas Happiness of the Boot Party (BP) – 43 votes;

Jibrin Alhassan of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) – 1,694 votes; Samson Usani of the National Rescue Movement (NRM) – 73 votes;

Madaki Robert of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) – 421 votes; and Swani Buba of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) – 189 votes.

Speaking in an interview with journalists immediately after the announcement of the results, the APC collation agent, Gambo Babale, described the election and collation process as credible.

“INEC have done so well. We’ve seen the processes across all the polling units, the ward coalition centres and here at AMAC area council coalition centre. Everything was done perfectly well.

“They’ve tried. They’ve done everything humanly possible. I believe this high level of transparency occurred in all the coalition’s exercise that took place in AMAC.

“PDP won about two ward councillors, Karu and Karishi. That is to tell you the level of transparency that happens in this election,” he said.

While congratulating the winner, he said the victory was for Mr Maikalangu to deliver more dividends of democracy to the people of AMAC.

Mr Babale said that the results were an indication that the APC was ready for victory in 2027.

The YPP ward collation agent, Abdullahi Ibrahim, also described the collation process as transparent, while congratulating the winner.

The result sheets were signed by the ADC, APC, APGA, YPP and NNPP party agents present at the collation centre.

EducationHausa, Yoruba, And Nigerian Pidgin Make List Of World's Most Spoken Languages by Slytiger(op): 12:25am On Feb 22
More than 7,000 languages are spoken around the world today and at least 3,000 of them, or 40 percent, are endangered.

English is the most widely spoken language, with approximately 1.5 billion speakers in 186 countries. Two out of every 10 English speakers are native, while the remaining 80 percent speak English as their second, third or higher language, according to Ethnologue, a database which catalogues the world’s languages.

Mandarin Chinese is the second most spoken language with almost 1.2 billion speakers. However, when accounting for native speakers, it is the largest language in the world, owing to China’s large population.

Hindi comes in third at 609 million speakers, followed by Spanish (559 million), and Standard Arabic (335 million).

unfortunately this one is saying he's happy being a slave. what a pity.

redeem or winners or catholic is just a denomination, u can leave if u want to. why cant u guys cannot leave this so called nigerian council of Islam and form yours. must u be in bondage
It's just bigotry and nothing else. The fulani ruling class in the north reserves the sultanate for their own tribe even though they were the last arrivals of Muslims in present day Nigeria. Uthman Danfodio, the ancestor of the current sultan and it's emirs even waged war against the kanem- Bornu empire that was already Muslim.
To a fulani, Islam is just a tool of conquest aka political Islam.

what I dont understand is why cant Yoruba Muslims sight the moon. why must they wait for the fulani muslim to tell them when to fast.

do fulani muslims have better eyesight or they have a special binocular to sight the moon.

It makes absolutely no sense.
Interestingly, islam was being practiced in Yorubaland and Hausa land as far back as the 1300 before the fulani jihadists arrived in the 1700.

Lol. Science can predict the sighting and it's more accurate.

Basic123:
grin

Stop judging musllims with your religion standard.

Sultan is not like one God from judea that was killed brutally by roman soldiers years back.

Heis just a mortal a fulani man that hapoens to be a muslim leader. In Islam,no racial discrimination.

By the way, when will an Igbo man become a pope?

Also, alery me when an Igbo man becomes the daddy G.O of redeem and wimner
This is so funny. An American became the pope, even though it was started by the Romans (Italians),
But the Fulani would never let anyone else become the Sultan. Not even an hausa or kanuri. That is racial discrimination.
