Nigerian equities have emerged as the best-performing stock market globally in dollar terms this year, overtaking South Korea.

The development was driven by weakened investor sentiment towards artificial intelligence-linked stocks and drags the Asian market into bear territory.

According to data compiled by Bloomberg across 92 global stock exchanges, Nigeria’s benchmark stock index has returned 67% in dollar terms year-to-date, edging past South Korea’s Kospi index, which has gained 66%.

What the report is saying
South Korea’s equity market has come under pressure in recent weeks, with the Kospi index entering a technical bear market after falling 22% from its June 19 peak.

The decline reflects growing investor concerns over the sustainability of demand for AI-related stocks, which had previously fueled one of the strongest rallies in global markets.
The weakness has also been compounded by currency pressures, with the South Korean won losing 5% of its value against the U.S. dollar since the start of the year, making it the fourth-worst-performing currency in Asia.

In contrast, Nigeria’s stock market has rallied strongly on the back of improving macroeconomic conditions, ongoing economic reforms, firmer oil prices, and improved foreign exchange liquidity.

The naira has appreciated by approximately 4% against the dollar since January, further boosting returns for foreign investors.

Financial services stocks have been among the strongest performers on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), driving gains in the benchmark index.

Among the standout performers is Fortis Global Insurance Plc, which has generated returns of about 1,400% in dollar terms this year.
Unlike South Korea’s market, where technology and AI-linked stocks play a dominant role, Nigerian-listed companies have limited direct exposure to the AI sector, shielding the market from the recent global technology selloff.

Investor optimism has also been supported by recent developments involving S&P Dow Jones Indices (S&P DJI), which placed Nigeria on its 2027 watchlist for a possible reclassification from a “Standalone” market to a “Frontier” market.

The index provider said the decision reflects significant regulatory reforms aimed at improving market transparency, accessibility, enforcement, and overall market integrity.
S&P DJI noted that Nigeria’s market reforms have strengthened investor confidence, although consistent policy implementation and improved operational resilience will remain key factors in determining whether the upgrade is approved.

A return to Frontier Market status would increase Nigeria’s visibility among international institutional investors and potentially attract fresh capital inflows from funds tracking frontier-market benchmarks.

The strong performance comes as the Nigerian stock market recorded one of its biggest single-day gains in recent weeks.

On July 8, 2026, the NGX All-Share Index advanced 2.27% to 242,459.98 points from 237,083.28 points, while total market capitalization increased by N3.45 trillion to N155.59 trillion.

The rally was largely driven by Airtel Africa, whose shares rose by the maximum daily limit of 10% to N5,801.40.

As a result, the market’s year-to-date return climbed to 55.81%, recovering sharply from the 46.78% low recorded on July 7 and returning to levels last seen before the June market correction intensified.

The Anambra State government has vowed to ensure justice for a 16-year-old girl who was gang-raped by eight men, including her guardian, in Nawfia community, Njikoka Local Government Area of the state.

The state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Esther Onyekesi, stated this when the victim(name withheld) was brought to her office in Awka on Thursday.

Onyekesi vowed to ensure that all perpetrators in the dastardly act are brought to justice to serve as a deterrent to others.

The Commissioner, who was visibly emotional when the victim was brought to her office, expressed deep outrage over the level of trauma the teenager had endured at the hands of adults who were entrusted with her protection.

A medical report presented to the commissioner confirmed that the teenager is two months pregnant as a result of the repeated sexual assaults.

The case was reported to the commissioner by a Catholic priest from Nawfia who intervened after learning of the abuse.

Onyekesi said, “The state government condemned this act in strong terms, and the ministry will ensure that all perpetrators in the dastardly act are brought to justice to serve as a deterrent to others.

“We express deep outrage over the level of trauma the young girl had endured at the hands of adults who were entrusted with her protection. This is unacceptable.

“We urge men to protect women and young girls, rather than take advantage of their vulnerability. The ministry assured the victim of her safety and pledged to follow the case diligently to ensure justice is served.”

While narrating her ordeals, the victim said her guardian had been forcing himself on her every night, after which other men joined in the sexual assaults.

She said a “Good Samaritan” facilitated her rescue from the abusive situation last week, after which some arrests were made before she was brought to the commissioner’s office for safety.

The victim further disclosed that the guardian’s wife is a stroke patient and was therefore unable to intervene in the abuse.

The victim told the commissioner that police at the Nawfia Division had arrested two of the eight suspects, while the remaining six were on the run.

It was gathered that the case is currently being handled at the Nawfia Police Station.

In May, the body of a sexagenarian woman, Victoria Adegoke, was found abandoned in a nearby bush.

The deceased was found naked and was suspected of having been raped and strangled before her body was dragged into the bush.

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is currently in a closed-door meeting with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, in Ibadan, Oyo.

The Tuesday meeting, which reportedly took place at the Governor’s Office in the Secretariat, Ibadan, was held after Makinde hosted an opposition summit held in the state capital.

The summit had drawn key political figures and stakeholders amid ongoing coalition talks ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Although the agenda of Obi’s meeting with Makinde was not officially disclosed as of the time of filing this report, it is widely seen as part of intensifying political consultations across opposition circles.

The development follows a similar closed-door engagement between Obi and former President Goodluck Jonathan, which also generated widespread attention.

Speaking on the rationale behind that meeting, Obi’s former campaign spokesman and National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Yunusa Tanko, said the consultations are part of a broader strategy to build national support.

“It is a visit to our national leaders… to appeal to them to give support to the candidature of Peter Obi based on available facts that the Nigerian youths have made up their mind,” he said.

Tanko added that the outreach is aimed at fostering unity and addressing perceived gaps in national leadership representation.

The Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg says two Nigerians identified as Amaramiro Emmanuel and Ekpenyong Andrew, have been killed in South Africa amid rising xenophobic tensions.

According to NAN, Ninikanwa Okey-Uche, the consul-general, said in a statement on Monday that Emmanuel died from injuries allegedly sustained after being beaten by personnel of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) on April 20.

She said Andrew, on the other hand, was apprehended on April 19 in the Booysens area of Pretoria following an alleged altercation with members of the Tshwane Metro Police, and that his body was later discovered at the Pretoria Central Mortuary.

The consular-general said the separate cases, involving security personnel, have left the victims’ families, the Nigerian community, and diplomatic missions in shock.

The consul-general said a formal case has been opened with the South African Police Service and urged the independent police investigative directorate (IPID) to ensure a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation.

“We call on South African authorities to thoroughly investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to justice,” she said.

“No matter the allegations, there are lawful processes. Everyone should be presumed innocent and granted fair hearing in a court of law. No one should take the law into their hands.”

The consular added that the consulate is engaging relevant authorities and will provide necessary support to the families of the deceased.

Okey-Uche warned against the growing trend of profiling and generalising Nigerians as criminals, describing it as dangerous.

The consul-general also urged Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm and law-abiding while investigations continue.

N2.5billion Fraud: Ex-Aviation Minister Stella Oduah Offers To Return Stolen Funds In Plea Bargain Deal

Former Nigerian Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah, has indicated her willingness to refund money stolen from the Nigerian government as part of efforts to settle a ₦2.5billion fraud case through a plea bargain arrangement.

Oduah and her co-defendant signalled their intention to pursue the plea deal during proceedings before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday.

The Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo, informed the court that both defendants had approached the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation to negotiate a plea agreement.

Oyedepo told the court that part of the proposed arrangement includes the refund of funds believed to have been obtained unlawfully.

“They have made moves to refund certain amount of money into the government coffers.

“What is left is the confirmation of receipt of the bank draft by the government,” Oyedepo was quoted by Newsmen .

Counsel to Oduah, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, confirmed the prosecution’s statement, noting that discussions around the proposed settlement were ongoing.

Lawyer to the second defendant, Favour Osuanya, also acknowledged that negotiations for a plea bargain were in progress.

Following the submissions, Justice Hamza Muazu adjourned the case until March 26 to receive an update on the progress of the plea negotiations.

Earlier, during proceedings on February 12, Oyedepo told the court that the plea bargain move was initiated in line with Section 270 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.

He explained that consultations between the parties were still ongoing and requested more time for a report on the negotiations or the commencement of trial.

SaharaReporters in December reported how Stella Oduah, alongside Gloria Odita, were arraigned before an Abuja High Court over an alleged N2.4billion fraud.

According to the prosecution, the defendants allegedly conspired in January 2014 to obtain a total of ₦2,469,030,738.90 from the Federal Ministry of Aviation through Broad Waters Resources Nigeria Ltd and Global Offshore Marine Ltd under fraudulent pretences.

The charges state that Oduah and Odita agreed amongst themselves to obtain the sum of ₦2.469 billion by falsely claiming it represented ‘Cost of Technical Supervision’ and ‘Security Integrated and Logistics Support Services,’ knowing such claims were untrue.

”Pretending that the said sum represented ‘Cost of Technical Supervision’ and ‘Security Integrated and Logistics Support Services’, which representation you knew to be false.”

"The offence violates Sections 8(a) and 1(1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud Act and is punishable under Section 1(3).

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the government alleged that on January 13, 2014, the defendants “obtained the sum of Eight Hundred and Thirty-Nine Million, Seven Hundred and Eighty Thousand, Seven Hundred and Thirty-Eight Naira, Nine Kobo (₦839,780,738.90) by falsely pretending that the said sum represented ‘Cost of Technical Supervision’.”

Count three alleges that on February 12, 2014, the defendants obtained ₦1,629,250,000 from the ministry through Global Offshore Marine Ltd, claiming it was for “Security Integrated and Logistics Support Services”, a representation the prosecution says was false.

In counts Four and Five, the FG accused Oduah, as minister at the time, of dishonestly misappropriating the same sums earmarked for a contract awarded to 1-Sec Security Nigeria Ltd.

The charge states that she “dishonestly misappropriated the sum by authorising the transfer of the said sum, which act is a breach of your official trust,” contrary to Section 311 and punishable under Section 315 of the Penal Code.

Both defendants earlier denied the allegations and previously pleaded not guilty to the charges.
