Harmattan season is slowly creeping in,

#Harmattan is a season whereby the weather is cold and causes dryness and dust.
#Harmattan affects our health in many ways: our skin, eyes and respiratory tract most vulnerable to the effects of this weather.
The skin suffers dryness with accompanying cracking of lips,
soles of the feet and sometimes the skin itself. The eyes also suffer from the abundance of dust particles carried along by the winds, thus itching, foreign body sensations and redness may be common especially in those with allergic eye diseases.
A lot of diseases are easily triggered due to this change in weather and lots of care must be taken to avoid fatal consequences.
Here are a few tips on how to make it through this dry patch;
1. Drink lots of water!
2. Avoid carbonated soft drinks. They dehydrate your skin quite bad.
3. Avoid antiseptic soaps during this
weather. Use them only when you
have a skin infection it is meant to treat. Use it even then for a short period and stop.
4. Keep the skin healthy by applying
oily creams and wearing weather
friendly clothing.
5. Use lip balms and apply Vaseline to the soles of the feet to prevent them from cracking.
6. Remember to keep your hair
moisturized and also do hairstyles that keep your hair ends hidden. You can also wrap up your hair to protect it from the dust.
7. Wear warm clothes; they will protect you from the severe cold.
8. Rinse your eyes with clean water
and reduce the exposure to the dust
by wearing protective spectacles.
9. Asthma patients or those with
chronic respiratory conditions should pay special attention to their health and take all possible and practicable measures to reduce exposure to the dusty atmosphere and they should carry their inhalers with them at all times.
10. Sicklers should be vigilant and
keep warm as much as possible to
prevent any crisis.
11. Due to the dusty atmosphere we
should practice a healthy food
preservation culture. Fruits and
vegetables should be properly washed before eating and those of us that store our drinking water should always ensure that the containers are always adequately covered.
12. We can also keep our homes warm but please be careful as this is also the season when we have the most fire accidents. All fires should not be left unattended and we should avoid indiscriminate burning of refuse during this season.

Cold Showers vs. Hot Showers: Which One Is Better?
If a hot shower is what your body craves in the morning, you’re not alone. The majority of people crank the handle all the way up in order to feel the warm water all over their body. But did you know that cold showers should also have a place in your daily routine?
That’s right — cold showers. The ones you dread to take when you’re the last person to get up in the morning. But, if you give them a fair chance, you might find that you actually like how you feel after taking one.
Regardless of how you feel about either type of shower, research shows that both hot and cold showers have health benefits you should be aware of.
What’s so great about cold showers?
Benefits of taking a cold shower include:
calming itchy skin
waking you up
increasing circulation
reducing muscle soreness post-workout
potentially boosting weight loss
glowing hair and skin
Cold showers calm itchy skin
Adam Friedman, MD, says if you have itchy skin or skin conditions that cause you to itch, cold showers can help you overcome the sensation to scratch.
Cold showers help you wake up in the morning
When that cold spray hits your body, there’s a bit of shock. This shock increases:
oxygen intake
heart rate
alertness
Cold showers increase your circulation
Increased circulation is one of the top reasons experts recommend cold showers. As cold water hits your body and external limbs, it causes your blood to circulate at faster rates to maintain ideal body temperature.
In that sense, a cold shower has the opposite effect of a hot shower for someone with hypertension or cardiovascular disease, since exposure to cold temperatures triggers the circulatory system to reduce inflammation and can help prevent cardiovascular disease.
Cold showers help reduce muscle soreness after intense workouts
Since cold water has regenerative properties, your muscles will relax and repair after a tough workout.
Cold showers may help boost weight loss
Some fat cells, such as brown fat, can generate heat by burning fat. They do this when your body is exposed to cold conditions like in a shower.
Gerrit Keferstein, MD, says these cells are mostly situated around the neck and shoulder area. So, perfect for showers!
Cold showers give your skin and hair a healthy glow
Wellness expert, Dr. Jacqueline Schaffer, MD, says that cold water tightens and constricts the blood flow which gives your skin and hair a healthier glow.
If you’re convinced a cold shower is totally out of the question, you might want to rethink your philosophy. Because unlike the long list of benefits that come with taking a cold shower, the list of cons is surprisingly quite short.
The cons of cold showers:
Cold showers might not be a good idea if you’re already cold, since the cooler temperature isn’t going to help warm you up by any means. It could actually make you even colder and increase the amount of time it will take for your body to warm back up.
They may not be a good idea if you’re sick, either. Initially, the cold temperature might be too hard on your immune system, so it’s best to ease into the cooler temperatures.
Why do we like hot showers?
If you have trouble relaxing or falling asleep at night, you might be tempted to take a hot shower to ease the stress of the day. This is a common practice for muscle relaxation before going to sleep because hot showers activate the parasympathetic nervous system which makes us tired, says Keferstein.
Other benefits of hot showers include:
providing relief from respiratory symptoms
helping with blemishes
muscle relaxation
Hot showers provide relief from cold or respiratory symptoms
Standing in a hot shower with the steam surrounding you has long been used as a natural remedy to reduce cold and cough symptoms. The heat from the water and the steam can help to:
open airways
loosen up phlegm
clear out your nasal passages
Hot showers help with blemishes
Hot showers can help to open up the pores of the skin, which allows you to clean out the trapped dirt and oil.
Hot showers are good for muscle relaxation
Being in hot water effectively relieves body tension and can soothe muscle fatigue.
But yes, your beloved hot shower does have some downsides. But the good news is, you don’t have to give them up completely. You just need to turn down the temperature a bit and take care of your skin afterward.
The cons of hot showers include:
Hot showers can dry out and irritate your skin. Schaffer says the hot water causes damage to the keratin cells which are located on our most outer layer of the skin — the epidermis. By disrupting these cells, it creates dry skin and prevents the cells from locking in moisture.
They can make also certain skin conditions worse. Higher temperatures make it easier for the skin to dry out and worsen conditions like eczema.
Hot showers can cause you to itch. Friedman says the heat can cause mast cells (which contain histamine) to release their contents in the skin and cause itching.
They can increase your blood pressure, too. If you have problems with high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease, taking a shower that’s too hot can make these conditions worse.
So, which type is better?
There are obvious benefits to both hot and cold showers, so what should you do? Well, in an ideal world, Friedman says you should take a lukewarm shower — so it’s tolerable — and apply a moisturizer to damp skin after bathing.
Another approach to try is what Keferstein describes as a contrast shower, which is an age-old technique developed by Dr. Sebastian Kneipp.
Basically, you get the water as cold as possible and stand in it for one minute. When the minute is up, you then change the water to as hot as you can handle for an additional minute. Alternate between one minute each of cold and hot for three to five cycles.
He said the health benefits come from the cold water constricting the blood vessels. This means all the blood will go to the middle of the body. The hot water will open the blood vessels and all the blood comes rushing out again. This can pump the blood completely through the muscles and organs and is great for regeneration and detoxification.

Tooth decay
Dr. Sylvester Ikhisemojie
Tooth decay is one of the most common disease conditions in the world today. It is very common in Nigeria and it affects people of all ages and both sexes. It is a preventable disease as well and affects an estimated 1.5 million people every year in Nigeria according to some estimates. This disease is caused by the presence of certain foods in our mouth which are broken down by different types of bacteria that act on such foods. Unfortunately, there is no way we can live without some of those bacteria because they are also natural inhabitants of the mouth. This disease has a technical term called dental caries which is a diagnosis made by a dental surgeon who is more usually just known as a dentist in everyday communication. This essay is provoked by two people close to yours truly who had some rather serious experiences and that is why we need to share their travails in order to increase the level of awareness.
The first person is a polytechnic graduate who began to experience toothache about two years ago. Soon, the pain became so severe that it was impossible to chew anything with that side. Still, he refused to go to a hospital not to mention a dentist. When the tooth became so diseased that it began to shake, he took a pair of pliers one faithful evening and removed the offending tooth. He simply grasped it in the curved hooks of the device and twisted the tooth until it came off. That device was not sterilised; it was the same one the mechanics and electricians use for their daily work and no form of pain relief other than his sheer determination to get the bad tooth off. He claimed that the pain he endured in doing so was nothing compared to what he suffered up till that point. He removed it by sheer brute force. Now, he has another bad tooth and thinks it is wiser to seek expert help.
The second person is a university graduate of many years who suffered for a long time and endured many sleepless nights that the use of different types of pain killers simply did not ameliorate. She decided to seek medical help when the gum on that side became noticeably swollen and her mouth began to smell. There is no toothpaste she did not try but the smell simply did not go. One faithful night, after she managed to sleep despite the pain, a sudden rush of pus into her mouth woke her from sleep. The volume of pus was so much and the smell was overpowering that she knew she must seek help. At daybreak, she feverishly sought the hospital attention she had avoided for years. The tooth was extracted to her immense relief and she was placed on some antibiotics and more pain-relievers.
Now, the two cases described above are people who are well educated and live in metropolitan Lagos, not some village dwellers with little or no access to proper health care. It can only be imagined what the situation is in the hinterland. As stated earlier, dental caries is a preventable disease. It is a persistent condition and it is widespread. Many people take poor care of their teeth. Sometimes, it is an embarrassment to take a look at the teeth of some people your age and you see what they are taking around. Some of them have teeth that have grown from white or off-white to gray and even green.
They retain coloured plaques on the teeth and also between them and end up with some quite disappointing optics when you take a close look at such dentition. Worse, when they have cavities in their teeth, decayed teeth as we have seen above, and they acquire a mouth odour that makes their breath offensive.
Tooth decay is most commonly found in two aspects of the teeth. One area is at the top of the teeth which are most often the portions in constant contact with the food we eat. The other area is the zone between the teeth which are usually more hidden and are protected from basic tooth cleaning by the poorly motivated person who just does some perfunctory washing of their mouth. But such washing is seldom sufficient to keep the teeth healthy. It may clean the mouth but not the teeth. Good cleaning of the teeth must include efforts to use a brush which is now a commonplace tool everywhere for at least two minutes at a time and with stroking motions conducted in an up and down manner. The usual practice for most people is to do it across.
On top of that, many people also fail or forget to brush their tongue. Both of them must be done in tandem in order to ensure a healthy mouth. And tooth brushing should be done at least two times a day.
The decaying tooth starts first to develop a hole either at its top or at the side between the two adjacent teeth. Afterwards, the acids produced by the action of bacteria in the mouth causes the enamel to begin to wear much like the tyre of a car. At some points of wear or corrosion, holes develop. These holes get progressively deeper until they reach the layer beneath the hard, bonelike enamel called the dentine which is where the nerves are. That is when the pain begins. It is also the softer part of the tooth and when the damage reaches that area, the tooth is guaranteed to literally get destroyed from the inside. It is these various stages of tooth damage that a dentist looks out for during their examination that will guide the treatment you get. They use reflective mirrors to conduct these tests and X-rays are also included. Following all of that, it is possible to determine what kind of treatment you should be getting.
Treatment for dental caries, or tooth decay, is divided into four different types. The most common type of treatment is the filling of the tooth which almost everyone has heard of. There are various materials for doing this and the aim is to patch over the defect that has formed in the affected tooth so that it can function normally. The other mode of treatment is to have a crown done especially when the resulting defect in the tooth has left a rather large gap. In another form of treatment, the pulp of the tooth which contains the damaged nerves together with the blood vessels is removed by a dental surgeon and the whole area is filled up and reinforced with a crown. That is known as the root canal treatment. The last type of treatment available is the one everyone seems to know about and perhaps go for; that is extraction. The reason for this last option is perhaps that most people will present late in the hospital and often there are no meaningful choices left and the tooth is simply removed.

Shhhh! Quiet; Patients are sleeping.

Hospitals are meant to be places of recovery. But how tranquil are they really?
In hospitals around the world, noise complaints are booming while some hospitals are trying to stem the "round-the-clock" racket.
Medical equipment, air circulation machinery, announcements and staff pages create a cacophony of sounds 24/7 that can stress patients
Besides sleep disruptions, high noise levels in hospitals can change patients' heart rate, respiration and blood pressure. These, in turn, boost stress levels and may slow healing
Equipment alarms are a major source of hospital noise. While some of these alarms alert staff to changes in a patient's medical condition, others sound when medication or batteries are running low.
Alarms in hospitals are being horribly abused. Most of the time, they don't in fact indicate urgent situations. Bedside alarms sound an average 133 times a day, according to background research with the study.
Most alarms are being responded to eventually, but not all in a timely fashion. Staff also may not respond quickly because they recognize that the sound is not critical and the situation will right itself.
The booming noise are now being curbed Via this link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smaarthealth.app The advent of AI powered smartphones app had brought about more innovations in healthcare—access to quality virtual medical care is now possible. Healthtech—Why It Matters in Nigeria’s Healthcare.

Healthcare providers constantly faces some difficulties in providing quality and accurate healthcare to patients, while complying with the strictest of privacy safeguards. The journey of a patient usually starts with an initial diagnosis, then followed by a treatment, which often involves transfers between acute care, post-acute care, ambulatory care and home healthcare. If patient’s diagnosed and treated timely at each and every stage, it can have a detrimental effect on the patient’s health and quality of care. In such case, mobility in healthcare can help both healthcare providers and patients by offering a Universal Access to Healthcare.
Healthtech helps both healthcare providers and patients by facilitating secure and accurate exchange of Medical diagnoses in healthcare. By creating an Artificial Intelligence mobile apps for healthcare, providers can improve the process of transitions of medical care, which will improve quality of healthcare with fewer re-admissions.
Smaart Health – The Advantages
Smaart Health helps streamline workflow and fosters clinical collaboration between the providers, Hospitals and patients.
By providing timely access to personal health information (PHI), it helps doctors to make timely critical care decisions.
With Smaart Health app, Patient’s medical record retrieval has become hassle free with the advent of handheld devices such as tablets, smartphones and PDAs. Doctors are not dependent on bedside workstations or terminals anymore to communicate and diagnose patient’s symptoms.
Due to enhanced security, integration and coverage, the use of smaart health medical app in healthcare has transformed how healthcare is conceptualized and delivered.
Healthcare providers can now utilize handheld mobile devices for remote monitoring, charge capture, ordering, results viewing, dictation, diagnosis and Consultation etc.
The healthcare industry is without a doubt one of the vertical that will extensively benefit from Smaart health app.
Smaart Health has significantly improved the quality of healthcare by providing real time health information to patients as well as doctors all these in less than 2 minutes.
Generally speaking, by adopting Artificial Intelligence powered Smartphone apps, doctors can speed up diagnoses and treatments of patients.
We cannot overlook the benefits healthtechoffers to hospitals, patients and doctors. Access to Universal Primary Healthcare will be prominent in our society which will save many lives.
Maintaining detailed medical records of patients would become much easier and organized regardless of where patients, and doctors are carrying out diagnosis.
The enthusiastic and rapid adoption of healthtech is growing globally. Healthcare providers need to incorporate healthtech in the delivery of healthcare and wellness to patients, which would further make it easy for Medical care delivery virtually. It cannot be denied any more that currently and globally, we’re truly witnessing a healthcare industry transformed by healthcare technology.

#AUTISM PATIENTS: we must not cast them away!

The World Health Organization defines Autism spectrum disorders as a group of complex “developmental disorders and conditions that emerge in early childhood and, in most cases, persist throughout the lifespan and are marked by the presence of impaired development in social interaction and communication and a restricted repertoire of activity and interest, with or without accompanying intellectual and language disabilities; and that manifestations of the disorder vary greatly in terms of combinations and levels of severity of symptoms”.
The most obvious signs tend to appear around ages 2 and 3, in a few cases, can be diagnosed as early as 18 months.
here is no one cause of Autism but it is said to be caused by a combination of genetic, biological and environmental factors. There appears to be a pattern of autism or related disabilities in many families, which further supports the theory of a genetic basis for the disorder. While there has been no one gene identified to cause autism, researchers are searching for irregularities in segments of genetic code that children with autism may have inherited.
Some other researchers are investigating the possibility that under certain conditions, a cluster of unstable genes may interfere with brain development, resulting in autism.
Some infections during pregnancy serve as risk factors such as rubella, encephalitis, fragile X syndrome as well as use of cocaine and consumption of alcohol. Some other potential causes of autism include environmental toxins, including heavy metals such as mercury and pesticides. There’s a high probability that people with autism or those at higher risk of developing it are more sensitive than others to these toxins.
Autism cannot be diagnosed by blood test, brain scan or any other form of physical tests. Instead, diagnosis is based on behavior. Diagnostic tools include the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R), a semi structured parent interview and the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) which uses observation and interaction with the child. A pediatric neuropsychologist is often asked to assess behavior and cognitive skills, both to aid diagnosis and to help recommend educational interventions.
Clinical genetics evaluation are sometimes done when Autism Spectrum Disorder is diagnosed, especially when other symptoms already indicate a genetic cause.
Core autism symptoms include; social interaction deficits, repetitive behaviors, language impairment, lack of empathy and also associated neurological issues such as sleep deficits/disorders, mood disorders, anxiety, ADHD, OCD.
Out of the 135 million established cases of autism worldwide, it is quite disturbing that more than a million children and teenagers suffer from the condition in Nigeria, with a large percentage of them tagged “fools”, “imbeciles” and even “witches” without proper medical help. These superstitious beliefs demand a quick fix as they further compound the problem. Autism is said to be one of the most ignored health issues in the country with a huge lack in diagnosis and management.
Nigerians need to view Autistic persons as being different and not insane, cursed or abnormal because people who have autism find it difficult to act in the ways other portray as “normal”.
Stigma and discrimination associated with the disorder compel most parents to hide their kids in the house in order to “protect” them from ridicule and discrimination in the community. However, this action is quite counter-productive as the child shouldn’t be excluded from the society.
Early diagnosis and therapy is a very important in dealing with autism in children, as a child detected to have autism at 2 years old is way easier to treat compared to a seven year old.
There’s an urgent need for increase in awareness as well increased enlightenment on the disorder, as well as putting up special facilities in place to help tackle the scourge. An increase in enlightenment and awareness campaigns will help a lot of parents detect the disorder in time and thus therapy can commence, and it also educates the society on how to relate with people with the disorder thus making cohabiting and interacting with them easier. This culminates into the society embracing them rather than neglecting and avoiding them which further compounds their issues.
Autism is treatable but not curable.
The goals of treating autistic children are to reduce associated lapses and family distress and to increase the quality of life and functional independence. There’s no single best treatment and treatment is usually tailored according to the child’s needs. Families and educational system are the main resources for treatment.
It is quite disheartening that no special school for autistic persons has been established by the government in Nigeria. The government has ignored autistic persons for too long and need to pay a lot of attention to them. Special schools need to be established for them as a lot of them find it extremely hard to be in the regular school setting as they are usually slow learners, come off as being emotionless and most times prefer to be by themselves.
Autistic people deserve our love, care and patience, they are not abnormal or insane but are just unique.

#Healthtipsdaily ; Cholera Kills Within Hours If Left Untreated!
Cholera is an infectious disease that causes severe watery diarrhoea, and can lead to dehydration and kill within hours if left untreated. People with low immunity – such as malnourished children or people living with HIV – are at a greater risk of death if infected.
The symptoms of cholera include diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, and severe dehydration. Diarrhoea due to cholera often has a pale, milky appearance that resembles water in which rice has been rinsed, also known as rice-water stool.
The signs and symptoms of cholera in children are similar to adults but they may also experience fever, extreme drowsiness, convulsions or even coma. Only about 1 in 10 infected people develop the typical signs and symptoms of cholera, usually within a few days of infection.
The disease is most common in places with poor sanitation, urbanization, conflict zones and famine. Effective ways to protect yourself is using water that has been boiled, water that has been chemically treated, or bottled water.
Key Facts
• Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal disease that can kill within hours if left untreated.
• Researchers have estimated that each year there are 1.3 to 4.0 million cases of cholera, and 21 000 to 143 000 deaths worldwide due to cholera.
• Most of those infected will have no or mild symptoms, and can be successfully treated with oral rehydration solution.
• Severe cases will need rapid treatment with intravenous fluids and antibiotics.
• Provision of safe water and sanitation is critical to control the transmission of cholera and other waterborne diseases.
• Oral cholera vaccines are an additional way to control cholera, but should not replace conventional control measures.
• Safe oral cholera vaccines should be used in conjunction with improvements in water and sanitation to control cholera outbreaks and for prevention in areas known to be high risk for cholera.
Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Cholera remains a global threat to public health and an indicator of inequity and lack of social development. Researchers have estimated that every year, there are roughly 1.3 to 4.0 million cases, and 21 000 to 143 000 deaths worldwide due to cholera

#Healthtips ; Why You Need to Stop Eating Egg Whites.

Scan the “healthy” section of a brunch menu and there you’ll find it: the world’s saddest order, the egg white omelet. This time will be different, you think, these things aren’t so bad, but then you stare down at the flat, pale pancake of liquid protein and think to yourself: Why do I do this to myself?
You do it because you were told to. We all were. Until just recently, experts warned that dietary cholesterol causes spikes in blood cholesterol, which in turn clogs arteries and hurts the heart. Cholesterol is found in the yellows, not the whites, so down the drain went the yolks.
Left behind are a wobbly mix of water, protein, some vitamins and little else. These whites are also sold in one-ingredient cartons, pasteurized so they can be eaten raw. (That’s not the case for shell egg substitutes, like Egg Beaters Original, which come with egg whites but cut out cholesterol by mimicking the yolk with natural flavor and color, vegetable gums, maltodextrin and many other added ingredients.)
But there’s good reason not to fear the yolks. Scientific research has vindicated dietary cholesterol, finding that eating cholesterol has no real impact on cholesterol metabolism. That is, eating foods high in cholesterol does not mean you’ll develop high cholesterol. Some evidence suggests that eggs might even be beneficial for cholesterol by raising levels of HDL cholesterol, the “good” cholesterol that’s linked to a lower risk of heart disease.
Egg yolks contain a vibrant mix of saturated and unsaturated fat—another nutrient that, when it comes from a healthy whole food source, is unfairly slandered. Yolks have a good helping of vitamin E, one of the nutrients Americans eat too little of. But the real case for egg yolks can be made by their abundance of carotenoids, nutrients in plants and animal fats that give things like egg yolks (and even autumn leaves) their yellow color. Egg yolks are rich in the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, which help eye health and protect against inflammation.
Sure, you can find carotenoids in more virtuous places, like fruits and vegetables. But egg yolks have an edge. Carotenoids need to be eaten with fat in order for the body to more fully absorb them, and a whole egg is the total package. Eat them, and you’ll get more of these nutrients—not just from the eggs, but from the stuff you eat it with, too. Two large eggs provide 143 calories, 13 grams of protein and almost 10 grams of fat.
A study last year found that when people ate eggs on a raw vegetable salad, their bodies absorbed about 9 times the carotenoids, including lutein and zeaxanthin from the eggs and alpha carotene, beta carotene and lycopene from the veggies. A new one from the same authors found the same effect on vitamin E absorption as well.
People are notoriously bad at eating vegetables; a full 87% of them eat less than the recommended amount. If they can wring more nutrients from those they do eat by adding an egg, yolks could do a lot of good, says Purdue University nutrition researcher and study author Jung Eun Kim. “There’s no fat in egg white, so you are not going to observe the same effect.”
So next time you crack open an egg, don’t let the fatty, cholesterol-choked yolk slip away. Mix it in for good texture—and even better health.

The more hours you spend sedentary, the higher your risk of calcified arteries and atherosclerosis, a risk factor for heart disease, according to a recent study reported at the American College of Cardiology 2015 Scientific Sessions.
In the study, each hour of sitting correlated to a 14 percent increase in a middle-aged person’s coronary artery calcium score, without relation to traditional risk factors, including physical activity level.
The study authors suggest that hours spent sitting should be looked at independently of the amount of physical activity as a risk factor for heart disease. However, Cleveland Clinic cardiologist Maan Fares, MD, who did not participate in the research, observes that further study is needed regarding time spent sitting as a separate risk factor.
“The data once again confirms the benefit of physical exercise in reducing the burden of coronary artery disease,” Dr. Fares says. Exercise level is one of the most dramatically modifiable risk factors that individuals can change to affect their overall risk level. He offers several strategies to add more activity into your day:
Integrate activity at work
Dr. Fares suggests that to avoid sitting for prolonged periods, consider modifications to working environments and habits, being sure to take mini breaks throughout the day of sitting at a desk. Quick walks or a standing or treadmill desk offer alternatives to constant sitting. Taking the stairs and walking meetings are other ways to insert more movement into the work day.
Exercise and Commuting
Incorporating some time in your day to workout at home or go to the gym before or after your workday will help offset the sitting you may do throughout the day. Instead of taking the car to work, turn your commute into a workout by biking to work.
Mindful monitoring
A pedometer or heart rate monitor can help you develop an accurate awareness of activity levels and encourage more exercise, such as walking, throughout the day.
Start young
Encouraging good exercise habits for children can set lifelong habits, and family activities get everyone moving.
“Physical activity has a multilayered benefit, possibly including anti-inflammatory processes, increasing coronary artery diameter and circulation, improving plaque stability and reducing cardiac disease risk,” he concludes.

Get Rid of That Bad Breath!

Bad breath is an embarrassing problem that happens to everyone at times. There are many reasons that can cause bad breath such as eating foods high in protein, sugar, or acid, smoking, illness and tooth decay. In addition to the great effect of regular dentist visits and proper oral hygiene in keeping your mouth healthy, there are other things that can help fight off bad breath. Here are the things you should do to avoid having bad breath:
– Floss your teeth and brush them every day as they are two critical steps you should take to ward off bad breath. According to American Dental Association, food particles can linger in your mouth if you neglect to brush and floss them and this can cause bad breath. Flossing should be an essential part of your daily oral care because it cuts down on plaque, bacteria, and odor-causing food particles. It is recommended to floss your teeth after each meal.
– Clean your tongue as it can be a source of bad smells. Halitosis-causing compounds form on your tongue and in your mouth when bacteria and amino acids combine, emitting an unpleasant sulfur-like smell. Thus, cleaning your tongue regularly can help a lot in fighting halitosis.
– Dry mouth is a problem that can cause bad breath or make bad breath worth. So it is important to drink lots of water as it helps promote saliva which cleanses the mouth and eliminates the stink-causing substances in food. Staying hydrated is important particularly before and after practicing heavy exercise because rapid breath can increase dry mouth.
Smoking is one of the reasons that can cause bad breath as it causes the smoker’s breath to retain the smells of stale tobacco smoke. Moreover, smoking stains your teeth and can irritate your gums. Therefore, quit smoking to maintain a healthier mouth.
– Avoid eating raw garlic or onion because when they ingested and excreted by the lungs, they cause halitosis. It is better to cook them before eating to avoid their odor that sticks to your mouth and lasts for hours. Also avoiding eating acidic foods or high fructose foods can help in preventing bad breath because both of them increase production of bacteria and bad breath.
– Using a mouthwash is a good temporary solution for bad breath since it reduces plaque and gingivitis and freshens breath.

What Everyone Should Know About Heart Attacks.

Did you know that heart disease is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States? Typical symptoms of coronary artery disease include pain in the middle of the chest while walking, lifting something heavy or climbing stairs. If it's a warning sign of an impending heart attack, this pain will eventually go away with rest.
But if it's a life-threatening heart attack, the chest pain will persist. The classic scenario of a heart-attack case is a slightly overweight, sedentary, middle-age man who smokes and ventures out daily "Classic," however, does not mean "always," and there are a few things everyone should know about heart-attack symptoms:
1. Chest pain does not have to be "pain," and it doesn’t have to be in the chest. The pain can feel more like a pressure, tightness or squeezing sensation. This pain, pressure or tightness can also be in the left shoulder, left arm, throat, jaw or back.
2. You don't have to have chest pain or pressure to be suffering from a heart attack. Although pain or pressure in the left-side shoulder, arm or jaw is most common, some people may experience nausea, vomiting, weakness, dizziness, hiccups, sweating and/or sudden trouble breathing. Overall, there's a sudden sense of not feeling well, and the time frame is usually anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours. People with diabetes (high blood sugar) and of older age may have milder symptoms.
3. Heart disease does not discriminate and can strike even in people at low risk. You don't have to be overweight, sedentary or a smoker to have a heart attack.
4. Heart disease doesn't just affect men. Heart disease is also the number one cause of death in women across all races. In fact, death from heart disease is more than 10 times more likely than death from breast cancer.
Like men, women may present with vague symptoms like nausea, vomiting, weakness, dizziness, hiccups, sweating and/or sudden trouble breathing. However, more often than not, women present with the classic chest pressure and, unlike men, symptoms are missed simply because of lack of awareness.
Heart disease kills more women than men every year, and women are more likely to die within a year of their heart attacks than men. However, compared to men, women have underlying differences in the structure and function of the arteries of their heart and the sequence of events in the body that lead to their heart attacks.
5. There's an art to exercise. Anyone over the age of 40 should be cautious when exercising — even relatively healthy people shouldn’t suddenly exert themselves more than usual. All exercise should start slowly and gradually increase in pace, duration and resistance. And it's always a good idea to talk to your physician before starting a new exercise regimen.

Mobility in #Healthcare — Why It Matters.

Mobility in healthcare helps both healthcare providers and patients by facilitating secure and accurate exchange of Medical diagnoses in healthcare. By creating an Artificial Intelligence mobile apps for healthcare, providers can improve the process of transitions of medical care, which will improve quality of healthcare with fewer re-admissions.
Mobility in Healthcare – The Advantages
Mobility in healthcare helps streamline workflow and fosters clinical collaboration between the providers and patients.
By providing timely access to personal health information (PHI), it helps doctors to make timely critical care decisions.
Mobility in healthcare is improving the reach and accessibility of critical/expensive business and clinical systems. These days, medical devices are moving closer to patient’s point-of-care.
Patient’s medical record retrieval has become hassle free with the advent of handheld devices such as tablets, smartphones and PDAs. Doctors are not dependent on bedside workstations or terminals anymore to communicate and diagnose patient’s symptoms.
Due to enhanced security, integration and coverage, mobility in healthcare has transformed how healthcare is conceptualized and delivered.
Healthcare providers can now utilize handheld mobile devices for remote monitoring, charge capture, ordering, results viewing, dictation, diagnosis and Consultation etc.
The healthcare industry is without a doubt one of the vertical that will extensively benefit from mobile apps and mobile medical devices. However, the key challenge still remains to find the right balance between allowing access to highly confidential medical records through mobile apps and devices, while keeping the patient’s data secure. Wearable devices can significantly improve the quality of healthcare by providing real time health information to patients as well as doctors.
Generally speaking, by adopting Artificial Intelligence mobile phone apps, doctors can speed up diagnoses and treatments of patients.
We cannot overlook the benefits mobility offers to hospitals, patients and doctors. Access to Universal Primary Healthcare will be prominent in our society which will save many lives. Maintaining detailed medical records of patients would become much easier and organized regardless of where patients, and doctors are carrying out diagnosis. By analyzing the information collected through the use of Artificial intelligence apps on mobile phones, it would be possible for healthcare experts to devise improved treatment options for chronic diseases. When it comes to mobility, there is still lots that can be accomplished in the healthcare professionals and patients.
The enthusiastic and rapid adoption of mobility in the healthcare industry is growing globally. Healthcare providers need to incorporate mobility in the delivery of healthcare and wellness to patients, which would further make it easy for Medical care delivery remotely. It cannot be denied any more that in the currently and globally, we’re truly witnessing a healthcare industry transformed by mobility. #HealthcareprovidersinNigeria #smaarthealth

#SmaarthHealth: Medical Symptoms You Must Not Ignore!
Once in a while as individuals, we feel sick with constant symptoms. Most times, the cause cannot be far-fetched. We’ve caught a cold or the flu. We over did it under the sun. The usual ache or body pain, an unpalatable throat or a general sense of the blahs is normal and unavoidable. It’s a part of life.
But there are times – and signs – when your body is telling you (insisting really) that now is the moment to pay attention, that something is seriously wrong and you need to see a doctor immediately. Below are symptoms that should not be ignored. They are signs you urgently need medical attention without delay.
Don’t dismiss them. These symptoms may turn out to be something very serious, but you won’t know that for sure without seeing a physician. They may signal serious disease or even a looming threat to life or eventually lead to death if not tackled on time.

Chest pain: Extreme discomfort that feels like squeezing, pressure or tightness. May be accompanied by pain radiating down an arm, nausea, vomiting, sweating or difficulty breathing. What it might mean: A heart attack. Other possibilities include gastrointestinal reflux or GER (sometimes called acid reflux), which happens when stomach contents flow back up into the esophagus. GER isn’t life-threatening, but it can become a chronic condition.
Shortness of breath: A sudden feeling that you’re breathing faster than usual, without obvious explanation, and without good effect. Worsens when you lie flat or exert yourself. Wheezing or gasping. What it might mean: A blood clot or embolism has lodged in the lungs or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, both very serious. Other possibilities include asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia and extreme emotional distress or anxiety.
Sudden intense headache: This is head pain unlike anything you’ve felt before, peaking in seconds or minutes. What it might mean: An aneurysm or burst blood vessel in the brain. Immediate medical attention is required. Other possibilities include meningitis or shingles.
Unexplained weight loss: Losing more than 5 percent of your body weight without trying in less than six months. What it might mean: Cancer. Many types of cancer are characterized by severe, unwanted weight loss. Other possibilities include endocrine disorders, diabetes and clinical depression.
Unusual bleeding: For example, rectal bleeding or black or tarry stools. Or bloody vomit. What it might mean: Ulcers and colon cancer can cause rectal bleeding; stomach, lung and esophageal cancers can trigger bloody vomit. Other possibilities include hemorrhoids. Coughing up blood may be linked to bronchitis, pneumonia or tuberculosis. Blood in urine can be the result of bladder or kidney infections. Postmenopausal vaginal bleeding may be due to the growth of polyps or fibroids.
High or persistent fever: Anything 103 degrees Fahrenheit or higher warrants an immediate trip to the doctor, without exception. A low-grade fever (somewhere around 100 degrees) for several weeks with no obvious cause should also be checked out. What it might be: Fever is part of your body’s infection-fighting defenses, but an extremely high fever may signal severe illness, from a urinary tract infection and pneumonia to endocarditis (inflammation of the heart lining) and meningitis. A persistent low-grade fever could be a sign of a sinus infection or of some cancers, such as lymphoma and leukemia. Other possibilities include a viral infection, which depending upon the bug and general health of the person might require hospitalization.
Sudden confusion: Or inexplicable changes in personality, aggression or an inability to concentrate. What it might be: Worst case scenario – a brain tumor or bleeding in the brain. Stroke is another possibility, especially if confusion is combined with numbness or weakness in the face, hands or legs and slurred speech. If so, immediate medical attention is essential to reduce the chance of irreversible brain damage. Other possibilities include reactions to new medicines or interactions between medicines or alcohol. Abnormal blood pressure, low blood sugar and dehydration may also be causes.
Swelling in the legs: Persistent, accumulated fluid (edema) in the extremities. What it might be: Swollen legs are a symptom of many conditions, but perhaps most worrisome is heart failure. The heart just isn’t adequately circulating blood through the body, causing some blood and other fluids to back up in the limbs. Other possibilities include vein problems and hypothyroidism (not enough of the thyroid hormone).
Sudden or severe abdominal pain: Centralized around the belly button. Sharp and unexpected. What it might be: An aortic aneurysm or rupture, which is a bulge in the aorta, the largest artery in the body. Alternatively, it could be a perforation of the viscus (stomach, intestine or other hollow organ), usually due to an ulcer. Or intestinal ischemia, which means blood flow slows or stops to the intestines, causing oxygen starvation in affected tissues. Other possibilities include gallstones, diverticulitis (inflammation in the large intestine), irritable bowel syndrome or appendicitis.
Flashes of light: Bright spots, flashes or other visual disturbances. What it might be: A detached retina, which means immediate medical care is needed to prevent permanent vision loss. Lights can also signal the coming or arrival of a migraine.
How do I diagnose any of this symptoms on my smartphone?

Smaart Health: Technology Accelerates Universal Healthcare in Africa!

Many Africans sees services rendered by most existing healthcare providers as a death knell to their lives. The quality of medical care obtainable in the society demands for serious questions. You hear cases of minor illness being compounded due to wrong medical advice by supposed physicians. It is no news that these quack healthcare providers dive in to medical cases they cannot handle, causing an average of 500, 000 people to die every year.
Availability or lack of access to good healthcare like the way it’s done in the UK and US is a major challenge in Africa. This has increased the rate at which individuals carry out self-medications daily. Funny enough, Self-medication is a major shortfall, because there is no clinical evaluation of the condition by a trained medical expert which could result in misdiagnosis or delay in appropriate treatment.
Inappropriate use of drugs has been a challenge in our environment, and has continued to be widespread practice in the Country. However, the change we envisage in Africa’s healthcare is finally here.
Mr Uvie Ugono, the founder & C.E.O of Smaart Health sees the challenges in Africa’s healthcare system as an opportunity to improve the healthcare. He has envisioned long time ago to upgrade Africa’s healthcare to global standards. Allowing not less than 1 billion Africans to have access to Virtual Medical Consultations right on their Android phones, thereby reducing their medical bills and saving lives.
Now, #SmaartHealth is changing the face of Africa’s healthcare to what is obtainable in the Western world.
Smaart Health is an Artificial Intelligence powered smartphone app, it allows you to carry out on demand Medical Consultations Via your smartphone.
You receive accurate medical diagnosis in less than 2 minutes, with instructions on what to do next.
As s user, you can also connect with foreign real life doctors to access Medical advice from the comfort of your homes.
There is no gain saying, that delayed illness can lead to a very severe and complicated one. You need to be diagnosed using Smaart Health #AI powered smartphone app before taking any drug. Diagnosis involves a careful evaluation of the patient’s medical and personal history in terms of health conditions, list of medications, diet and lifestyle habits. In case you do not know, often medications taken in combination with alcohol or certain foods increase the level of damage,
If you do not embrace high quality healthcare providers, there are chances that you become a victim of self-medication which include; inaccurate diagnosis, using inappropriate medications that cause side effects, masking the symptoms of a serious condition, delaying medical advice, inaccurate dosage that leads to accidental overdose, mixing medications that are not safe to mix, which may result in legal costs or health concerns, risk of abuse, risk of developing addiction which ultimate go is death.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE & IT’S BENEFITS

Artificial intelligence creates intelligent computer systems that perform tasks without receiving instructions directly from humans. Let’s have a look at its benefits. The general benefit of artificial intelligence, or AI, is that it replicates decisions and actions of humans without human shortcomings, such as fatigue, emotion and limited time.
Artificial intelligence helps us in reducing the error and the chance of reaching accuracy with a greater degree of precision is a possibility.
The Doctors also most times assess the patients and their health risks with the help of artificial intelligence. It educates them about what is trending, helping them with accurate diagnosis and drugs prescriptions
You know technology really day by day reaches the zenith and brought new things in front of us for convenience. Today’s artificial intelligence technology allow non-living things like robots & computers to think for themselves to an extent. Take a look at artificial intelligence benefits in the healthcare industry.
Fast & Accurate diagnostics: Some diseases require immediate action otherwise they will become more severe. In the case of Artificial Intelligence, the neural network of the brain is look alike, has the ability to learn from previous cases. After some studies or research on artificial neural networks, researchers say that it is scientifically proven that these networks can diagnose fast & accurate some other diseases include eye problems, malignant melanoma etc.
Reduce Human errors: Profession of doctor is very sensitive; they have to take care of each & every patient. In a day, they can see a lot of patients which can be very exhausting because it requires attention and knowledge of the patient. Sometimes due to lack of activeness, human error may threaten the patient safety. To overcome this #AI as a super human spell checker will assist doctors by eliminating human error & relieve them of monotonous & time-consuming tasks.
Cost Reduction: With the emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, the patient can get doctor assistance without visiting hospitals/clinics which results in cost cutting. AI assistants provide online care & assist patients to add their data more frequently via online #medical records etc.
Virtual Presence: #SmaartHealth Artificial Intelligence powered smartphone app, which allows you to carry out on demand accurate medical consultations via your smartphone allows users who live at remote locations to carry out #consultations. It’s on demand 24/7
You have a headache, you feel dizzy and you are sure that you have a fever. Your partner tells you that you do not look great, you should go to the #doctor. So, you call the assistant of your GP and ask for an appointment. It turns out you have to wait two more days to get the chance for a visit. Now, this is what’s not going to happen with Smaart Health Artificial Intelligence powered smartphone app, once you have this app on your smartphone, you can carry out on demand accurate medical consultations in less than 2 minutes with instructions on what to do next.
