Ghana’s 4x100m relay team ran the fastest time by a Ghanaian team at an African Athletics Championship since 1998 after winning a silver medal in a time of 39.28s at the ongoing Confederation of African Athletics Championships in Marrakech, Morocco on Tuesday. The relatively inexperienced team, which was made up of three debutants, including a 400m runner, gave Nigeria a run for their money before claiming silver in a pulsating race. 400m runner Daniel Gyasi gave Ghana a good start before Solomon Afful ran a brilliant back straight, handing over to Emmanuel Dasor who ran a splendid curve to pass the baton on to Tim Abeyie. But a strong finish by Nigeria’s Mark Jelks denied Team Ghana the ultimate prize. Nigeria won the very competitive event in a time of 38.80, followed by Ghana in 39.28 while Algeria clinched third place in 39.89. Ghana has participated in nine editions of the African Championships since 1998 and the 4x100m quartet wrote their names into the history books as one of the best teams with their splendid display. The quartet of Daniel Gyasi, Solomon Afful, Emmanuel Dasor and Tim Abeyie eclipsed the previous performance by the national relay team at the last African Athletics Championship in Benin, where Ghana ran 39.40 to win a bronze medal. Tim Abeyie, the only surviving member of that last 4x100m relay team of 2012, commented on the team’s performance. “Good. It’s better than the last time in Benin when we came third and the time is an improvement over the time in Benin. The German based sprinter added that his performance in Morocco is better than the last Championship in Benin saying, “It’s better than Benin. I made the final in the 100m and now we have silver in the relay. It’s good.” Sprinter Emmanuel Dasor, who was making his debut appearance on the senior relay team could not hide his joy. “It is very good. This is my second time, running for my national team. I’m so grateful and happy. I thank almighty God for this.” 400m runner Daniel Gyasi added, “I’m very surprised because this is my first time running in the 4x100m relay team.” Solomon Afful expressed his joy at winning his first senior medal, “It is a great honour to run for the nation. This is my second time running for the national team. I think we did marvelously well. It is good.” |
SIR: This is a save-our-souls call from Nigerian students in Russia under the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) programme of the Federal Scholarship Board. If something is not urgently done to help our situation, Nigerians should expect to see screaming headlines like Russian Government deports Nigerian Scholarship Students for begging for alms on the streets of Russia; Russia set to deport Nigerian scholarship students for working without work permits; Nigerian students starve to death in Russia; Female Nigerian students prostitute for food in Russia. The BEA scheme is a joint program run by the Nigerian government (through the Federal Ministry of Education) in collaboration with governments of other countries such as Russia, China, Cuba, Morocco, Algeria, Ukraine, etc. Under the scheme, outstanding students from all the states of the federation are nominated by the Nigerian government to the foreign governments. The receiving-country then places the scholars in universities and pays their tuition while the Nigerian government pays for students’ visas, flight, and a monthly allowance of US$500. In the last seven months, we have not received our stipends from the Federal Scholarship Board (FSB), Abuja. Not a kobo or a single cent. Having not received a single cent in the last seven months from the government that sent us abroad, how are we expected to survive? The average cost of living in most Russian cities is about US$750 monthly; in cities like St. Petersburg and Moscow, it gets as high as US$1,000. This means that the US $500 the FSB is supposed to pay us is grossly inadequate. That notwithstanding, the US$500 is never paid as at when due. The earliest we have received our stipends in the last four years is six months late. Every year, the Association of Nigerian Scholarship Students in Russia (ANSSIR) keeps writing newspaper articles as this, including letters to the House of Representatives, Senate and to the Federal Scholarship Board. Our numerous requests to increase our stipends and to pay them as at and when due has always gone unanswered. The excuse always given is that the budget has not been passed. Does it take seven months to pass the budget every year? What about the supplementary budget? Why can’t provisions be made for our stipends in the supplementary budget? Why can’t our stipends be paid monthly like Nigerian workers (such as the staff of the FSB) and students from other countries such as Botswana and Ghana? Nigerians need to understand that the visas issued us by the Russian government are student visas, which preclude any form of employment. This means that we are not permitted by law to work even as cleaners, waiters or waitress, not part-time, not even during the holidays. Russian immigration laws are very strict and the Russian authorities are quick to punish offenders. Earlier this year, some foreign students were deported for working at a restaurant, in addition to the owners of the restaurant being made to pay huge fines. We would have loved to work to support ourselves but we are not permitted to work. More worrisome is that that our yearly student visa expires in another four weeks. To renew it, we need a US$40 renewal fee. Failure to renew it 20 days before expiry could lead to deportation. Our problems still does not end there. Some of us our currently doing internship either at the hospital (medical students) or airport (aeronautical engineering students) and need money for transportation. We plead with the federal government to speedily come to our rescue to save us from trauma. |

Patrick Sawyer died of Ebola after arriving Lagos from Liberia The Commissioner for Health, Jide Idris, made the disclosure when he addressed journalists on the update of the country`s first Ebola case in Ikeja. Mr. Idris said the two persons were among the 70 contacts being monitored and investigated for any symptoms of the disease by the state government and other partners. The commissioner, who said the two cases were under observation, however stressed that they did not test positive to the virus. Mr. Idris said the state government would continue to monitor all contacts with the victim until the end of the 21 incubation day period of the virus. “Our Rapid Response Team is currently tracking all contacts of persons exposed to the dead passenger with Ebola virus,” the commissioner said. “The contact tracing team is following 70 contacts of the EVD case and linking them to clinical support when needed. “Two suspect cases had fever, they are under observation and so far have tested negative to the virus. “The monitoring of suspect cases will continue until the end of them period of 21 days from their exposure to the victim.” The commissioner said an emergency operation centre had been activated in Lagos by the state and its partners as part of efforts to check the threat of the virus. He added that the Federal Government had stepped up measures to screen incoming passengers to Nigeria —through, airport, seaport and border crossing — to identify any traveller with symptoms. Mr. Idris said a deceased body was recently brought to Nigeria from Liberia, explaining that the government was investigating if he died from Ebola. The commissioner urged residents to collaborate with government in checking the Ebola threat in the country by reporting suspected cases for government`s intervention. Saying diseases thrive well in dirty environments, Mr. Idris urged residents to maintain clean body and environment to reduce the risk of the virus. Also speaking, Abdul Salim Nasidi of the National Disease Control Centre said although disease has no cure, it was treatable. He warned members of the public against emphasizing that the virus had not cure, saying it might discourage those with suspected cases from accessing treatment. Mr. Nasidi said the Federal Government was doing everything to check the threat of the disease and urged citizens not to panic as no fresh case had been discovered yet in the country. A high-level Nigerian security source told SaharaReporters that Nigeria’s intelligence agencies have received “credible reports that Boko Haram has developed an ambitious plan to overwhelm and take over Kano, Kaduna, Niger, Kogi and Nasarawa states.” The source said the Islamist terrorist group plans to carry out its design by intensifying its bombings and choosing locations that would yield high casualty figures. “Their move is to encircle [Nigeria’s capital city of] Abuja and increase the level of political instability in the country,” our source revealed. The high-level intelligence agent disclosed that the shape of the terror group’s plans have emerged from the confessions of some Boko Haram insurgents who were captured recently. “We have also acquired a lot of information about their [Boko Haram’s] plans through our interrogation of Aminu Sadiq Oguche.” Mr. Oguche, who was recently extradited to Nigeria from Sudan, is accused of masterminding some of the recent high-profile bomb blasts in Nigeria, including explosions at a bus station in Abuja that claimed more than 100 lives. In addition, security agents have gleaned “significant and useful intelligence” from interrogating one Mohammed Zakari, described as “the chief butcher” of Boko Haram. Mr. Zakari was recently arrested in Bauchi, capital of Bauchi State. Our source said that Nigeria’s security agencies are stepping up counter-insurgency measures to forestall Boko Haram’s plans to spread its tentacles to the states they are targeting. “Apart from information we have gathered from interrogating suspects, we are also tracking critical conversations by the group’s hierarchy and examining sensitive documents recovered after recent raids on their bases in Bauchi, Jigawa and Borno states,” the source said. Our source added that President Goodluck Jonathan and a few other government officials had been briefed about the new threats by Boko Haram as well as the outline of the plans to counter the group’s ambitious push. A senior Islamic scholar in Northern Nigeria, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said his group was cooperating with the government to defeat Boko Haram. “We discussed with President Jonathan when we met during the end of the Ramadan fast and told him that we are ready to help stop Boko Haram. But we also told him that this is something the government must take action on. We’re doing our own, but we have limitations,” he said. |

Hehe MUST READ: -Conversation between AIDS and EBOLA VIRUS... Aids:Hey baby girl! Glad to have you here in Nigeria. Ebola:Thankx boss. How has your mission been? Aids:Has been very much successful, but just a couple of impediments I ve encountered since the introduction of condom and a few other contraceptives..... Ebola:Really! AIDS: Yea! That not withstanding, i'm still making impact enormously. Ebola : Kudos boss! More grease your elbow. Aids: Thanks baby sharwarma.Hope you've set down good strategies for the achievement of your quest? Ebola:Yes of course! I'm no dumb head! Infact,a victim of mine died recently. Aids: Like seriously! That's awesome....So tell me more..... Ebola: The issue here,is that i'm trying to bring the popular saying "there's love in sharing" into play. Nigerian bats and apes have decried the constant share of their meats by bush meat lovers; without partaking in their problems as well. So,my aim is to balance the equation and erase partiality. Aids : Waoh! That's good. So what actually motivated your migration into Nigeria? Ebola: During my intensive survey, I discovered that so much of Nigerians enjoy munching bush meat, and for that,I ve come to make them also, partakers of me as well! As u know,"DIARIS LOVE IN SHARING". Aids: So, who is free from your TENTACLES? Ebola: Those who desist from consuming bush meats; especially monkeys and bats have less possibilities of contacting me. Aids: I discovered that you're more powerful and contagious than I do. What's the secret? Ebola: (blushing).....O yea! Well, the secret is the incessant complaints tabled by monkeys and bats. Their complaints have made me so furious. I've made it a point of duty to move into anybody who comes in contact with those I ve affected. Aids: Hmm! You're really awesome! Can we hang out sometime? Ebola: (smiling)Stop flattering me boss! Will be on my way now. I've got someone to inflict somewhere...... About the hang out,I will give it a thought(winks). Aids: Alright. Take care and good luck my Rosalito Pepperto. Ebola: Thanks boss!! Funny!!! Right!!!......... Well, brothers and sisters, avoid bush meat,be vigilant,so u dnt fall a victim...... Pray without season and ceasing. We shall only hear of it,but it will not befall anyone of us in Jesus Name....... # Amen. |
