1 PEZ Dispensers Were Created To Attract Smokers The famous PEZ candies were created in Vienna, Austria, in 1927. Originally, they didn’t have the sweet, fruity flavors that we know today. They used to be peppermint flavored. In fact, their name comes from pfefferminz, the German word for “peppermint.” Packaged in tins, the candies were popular for a time. They were supposed to be used as an alternative to smoking because their creator, Eduard Haas III, disliked smoking. In 1949, new PEZ dispensers designed by Oscar Uxa were introduced as a way to hygienically share the candies without touching all of them. The dispensers were also designed to draw in smokers. Flicking open the top of a PEZ dispenser was meant to be like flicking a lighter. For a time, Haas even used the slogan “No Smoking, PEZing Allowed.” In the transition to American markets, PEZ changed to their iconic fruity flavors, and the dispensers acquired their character tops . Whether PEZ have actually discouraged smoking is debatable. But PEZ still exist today as beloved combinations of candies and toys.

3 Necco Wafers Were Brought To The South Pole By The Ton These chalklike candies were invented in 1847 when Oliver Chase made the first lozenge cutter. It became the machine that launched the candy industry, and it wasn’t long before its first creation, Necco Wafers, made it big. The military commissioned a major portion of Necco Wafers’ production during World War II because the candies were easy to transport without melting . They were also cheap enough during the Great Depression to become a popular civilian treat. Famous Arctic explorer Donald MacMillan gave out these candies to native Canadians on his journeys, but that was nothing in comparison to Admiral Richard Byrd. For a two-year journey to the South Pole, Byrd packed 2.5 tons of Necco Wafers. That was about 0.5 kilograms (1 lb) of candy per week for every man on the crew for the entire trip. There is no record as to whether the entire amount was consumed. Still, the eight original flavors that Admiral Byrd carried with him can be enjoyed today. Except for the price, not much about Necco Wafers has changed since they were invented. 2 Dubble Bubble Gum Was An Accident Ancient people chewed on bits of tree bark tar. The Maya and Aztecs also chewed on chicle from sapodilla trees. Then, in the 1840s, John Curtis used spruce tree resin to make gum to chew on and later created the first chewing gum factory. It wasn’t until 1928, however, that our modern idea of chewing gum was created. Accountant Walter E. Diemer created it by accident. He liked to experiment in his spare time. After expanding on a failed recipe, he found a way to make chewing gum that was easier to chew and more resistant to breakage in packaging. Interestingly, the iconic pink color was chosen simply because that was the only color available. After a successful trial run, the new gum was packaged and marketed as Dubble Bubble Gum. Eventually, the packages included comics that featured Dub, Bub, and the iconic Pud. This only helped the popularity of the new chewing gum. At the beginning of World War II, it was even shipped to the military before the scarcity of products forced the factories to stop production. These factories reopened soon after the war ended and still cater to our bubble- blowing, cud-chewing needs today. |

5 Circus Peanuts Inspired Lucky Charms Fondly remembered as one of the original penny candies , Circus Peanuts have been around since the 1800s. The banana-flavored marshmallows are notorious for their love-it-or-hate-it reputation. Maybe that’s why no one has admitted to inventing them, much less tried to brand them. Since we don’t know who the creator is, we also have no idea why these peanut-shaped candies have a banana flavor. Either way, these little gum stickers are the reason why we have marshmallow cereals. General Mills product developer John Holahan found that the mixture of Cheerios and cut bits of Circus Peanuts was good enough to sell, which led to the development of the ever- popular Lucky Charms cereal . So maybe, even if you’re not fond of Circus Peanuts, you might want to thank whoever made them if you love marshmallows in cereal. 4 M&M’S Lost A Color In Cancer Panic Forrest Mars Sr., son of Frank and Ethel Mars of Mars, Inc., was inspired by the candy-shelled chocolates in military rations to make the famous M&M’S candies. Named for Forrest Mars Sr. and Hershey executive William Murrie, these candies were patented and put into production in 1941. Eventually, they were sold only to the military. But when the war ended, their popularity continued with civilians. The candies were sold in cardboard tubes, and the original colors were brown, red, violet, yellow, and green. However, in 1979, one of these colors faded from the mix due to FDA test results. The dye called FD&C Red No. 2 was linked to tumors in female rats in a 1971 Russian test. However, this test was later found to have been incorrectly performed. The tested dye wasn’t the food coloring that was used in M&M’S anyway. But the damage had already been done. Mars had to deal with a public that was panicked over the possible effects of FD&C Red No. 2. Used to color several popular foods like soda, hot dogs, ice cream, and candy, the public demanded that the controversial dye be removed. Although M&M’S were colored with Red No. 40, Mars replaced red M&M’S with orange M&M’S to ease public anxiety. In 1987, the red color was reintroduced for M&M’S and has been popular ever since.

6 Snickers Also Has Strange Name Origins The Snickers bar has an interesting story behind its name as well. Although the Snickers bar was not the first peanut, caramel, and nougat candy bar, it was one of the most popular and most enduring of its time. Frank and Ethel Mars, founders of Mars, Inc., had great success with the Milky Way bar and were open to developing new candies . After three years of development, the Snickers bar was released in 1930. Just months before the release of their new candy bar, Ethel’s favorite horse, Snickers, died. This was a hard loss for her as she adored her horse. So she and her husband named the new candy bar “Snickers” in the horse’s honor. Interestingly, the farm where Snickers had lived was called the Milky Way Farm , just like their other famous candy bar. Regardless of this name theme, Snickers candy bars live on as one of the best-selling candies in the world.

8 Pop Rocks Caused Urban Legend And Widespread
Panic. The fizzing candies Pop Rocks were developed in 1956 by General Foods research scientist William A. Mitchell. Originally sold for 15 cents a packet in the early 1970s, they came in orange, cherry, and grape flavors. Pop Rocks are small, crystallized pieces of sugar with air pockets of carbonation that “pop” and “crackle” when the candy melts in your mouth or in water. This popping sound led to an urban legend. As early as 1979, there were rumors about a child who had exploded after eating Pop Rocks with soda. At one point, the Food and Drug Administration even set up a hotline to field any questions from parents concerned about their children eating the candy. After a large marketing effort to combat the rumors that were gripping the imagination of the public, Pop Rocks eventually disappeared from market shelves in 1983. They have since popped back up and had a resurgence in popularity. But the crazy rumors still linger and were even featured on MythBusters. Don’t worry about busting your gut , though. The most that Pop Rocks and soda will do to your stomach is to make it upset. candies 7 Lollipops Have Strange Name Origins Since ancient times, candies and sugary sweets have often been put on the ends of sticks for easy eating. It became popular in the 17th century to enjoy boiled sugar treats that were pressed onto sticks to eat. This treat was soft candy rather than hard, but it was one of the forerunners of the modern lollipop. In the 20th century, the owner of McAviney Candy Company often brought home for his children the leftover sticks used to stir batches of candy. He began selling these sticks in 1908, which coincided with the invention of the first automated machine that put sticks in hard candy. Samuel Born, the inventor of the candy machine, was even awarded a key to the city of San Francisco for his invention. In 1908, George Smith began marketing the modern version of a lollipop through his confection company, Bradley Smith Company. He coined the term “lollipop” in 1931 after a famous racehorse of the time called Lolly Pop . When lollipops stopped being produced during the Great Depression, the name fell into the public domain. The name also meant something like “tongue slapper” because “lolly” was Old English slang for “tongue” and “pop” meant “to slap.” Some linguists have even linked the name to the Roman phrase loli phaba (“red apple”), supposedly referring to the traditional Roman toffee apple treat . So the famous name originates from a horse, Old English slang, or ancient Rome. Or it could be made-up. Whatever the truth, it’s a unique way of looking at lollipops.

Everyone has a favorite candy. Some people like the powdery sugar in Pixy Sticks. Others prefer classics like lemon drops and root beer barrels. Some like chewy candy like licorice, and some like to suck on candy like jawbreakers. Anyone who has a sweet tooth knows that candy is the best way to sate it. However, you may not know everything about your favorite candy—like where it got its name, how it was first made, or even why. 10 Saltwater Taffy Was Probably Named As A Joke Although nobody knows who made it first, saltwater taffy got its start either on the boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey, or at Midwestern county fairs in the 19th century. Taffy is made with sugar, salt, flavorings, corn syrup, and other ingredients that vary between recipes. It is then pulled and molded to aerate the mixture so that it becomes soft and chewy. Regardless of its name, this soft taffy does not have saltwater in it, although some brands do add extra salt. According to rumor, saltwater taffy got its name from candymaker David Bradley. During an 1883 storm, his taffy stock became soaked with saltwater from the Atlantic Ocean. But even though his store was flooded, customers still came in to ask for his taffy. He jokingly called it “saltwater taffy,” and the name stuck. In 1923, John Edmiston trademarked the name and tried to get a cut of the profits from anyone selling “saltwater taffy.” But the Supreme Court decided that the name had already been used too often for candy and ruled against him. As a result, Edmiston did not receive any royalties . The term became common again and is now the accepted way to market nearly any taffy, salty or not. 9 Cotton Candy Was Promoted By Dentists Originally called fairy floss, cotton candy has gone by many monikers, such as candy floss or spun sugar. John C. Wharton and William J. Morrison patented their version of a cotton candy machine in 1899. Then they introduced the machine and their new candy concoction at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. They sold nearly 70,000 boxes of candy at that fair. As cotton candy is made entirely from caramelized sugar, most people realize that such a sweet overload will probably send you to a dentist sooner rather than later. Interestingly, Morrison was a dentist. To be fair, he was also a lawyer, an author, and a civic leader. But still, a dentist creating cotton candy has to raise some eyebrows. In 1900, cotton candy was introduced to the Ringling Brothers by Thomas Patton, who had invented a more modern version of the cotton candy machine. Even later, Josef Lascaux, another dentist , created another version of the machine that he never officially patented. He did, however, coin the name “cotton candy.” As to why more than one dentist had a hand in the rise of cotton candy’s popularity, we can only guess that it has to do with the consequential rise of cavities.

2 The Tourist In The Reagan Red Square Photo In 1988, Ronald Reagan made a trip to Moscow. As part of his visit, he took to Red Square to meet local Russians. While shaking hands with a young boy, the president had his picture snapped by a White House photographer. Nothing unusual about that. But then you look at the blond, slightly geeky tourist watching the encounter. According to several sources, that man may well be a young Vladimir Putin . The link was first suggested in 2009, and it was immediately shot down by Russia. However, it has since persisted for several reasons. The first is that we now know the KGB dressed some of their agents up as ordinary Russians and got them to ask Reagan difficult questions . Putin was a member of the KGB at the time, so his appearance there wouldn’t be unlikely. The second reason is that it really does look like a younger version of the current leader of Russia. Pete Souza, who took the picture, today insists that the blond man is a young Putin. For his part, Putin’s spokespeople have strenuously denied the encounter, saying he was working in Dresden at the time. What do you think? 1 The Nameless KhmerRouge Victims The Cambodian genocide under Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge threw up its fair share of horror stories. None are quite as horrifying as that of S-21. A former school converted into an interrogation center, S-21 held as many as 17,000 people during the four years of Pol Pot’s reign. Less than 10 of them survived . Inmates were tortured for days on end then driven out to the countryside, beaten to death, and thrown in mass graves. The saddest part is we still don’t know who most of them were. The guards at S-21 did keep records. Thousands of photographs have since surfaced of the prisoners, with more coming in all the time. Many are now known only by their pictures. When S-21 was finally abandoned, nearly every photo was separated from its folder. Of the 6,000 pictures currently known, the vast majority feature people who are unidentified . Ranging from frightened dissidents, to somber old men, and young children with tears in their eyes, the faces are all anonymous. Their names, their stories, and their lives were all wiped out. Today, we can only look at their images and wonder who they were and how the Khmer Rouge could feel they needed to be erased from history.

4 The Grim Sleeper Women A vicious serial killer who preyed on mostly black women in the Los Angeles area, the Grim Sleeper is thought to have murdered at least 11 people in 25 years. However, some say the number is much higher. When current suspect Lonnie Franklin Jr. (due to be tried this summer) was arrested, police found over 180 photos of women in his home. Most had obviously been taken in Franklin’s house or car. A number appeared to be asleep, or unconscious, or worse. Chillingly, the Grim Sleeper’s only known survivor claims she was photographed in his car right after being shot and sexually assaulted. Since the photos were first released in 2010, police have identified nearly all of the women shown. However question marks linger over several them. The LAPD’s official website still carries a graphic slideshow of 38 unknown people taken from Franklin’s collection. Some are ordinary pictures taken in bright daylight outside his house. Others are far darker. At least four of the photographed women appear to be unconscious at best. Another looks like she’s reacting in stark terror to something unseen. Not only are these women unknown— we don’t even know if they’re still alive. 3 The Truth Behind The Falling Soldier Photo An image of a Republican soldier falling from a gunshot wound in the Spanish Civil War, Robert Capa’s photo is one of the most iconic pictures of war. It’s also one of the most fiercely debated. To this day, we have no idea whether it’s a genuine image or if Capa faked the whole thing . The arguments for both sides are compelling. A 2009 analysis by the Spanish daily El Periodico seemed to pinpoint the location of the photo to outside the town of Espejo. While Espejo did receive its fair share of fighting, it wasn’t drawn into the war until three weeks after the photo appeared in the press. In addition, a collection of Capa’s negatives discovered in the mid-’90s appeared to show other staged pictures taken at the same time, suggesting his most famous image may have been staged, too. On the other hand, experts at the International Center of Photography still believe the picture to be genuine. One school of thought claims it shows a staged photograph that suddenly turned real when a sniper picked off the posing soldier. However, this claim contradicts Capa’s account that the soldier died under machine gun fire. Until definitive proof emerges either way, the story behind the war’s most famous photograph will remain a myst |

6 The CSS Georgia Hoax An ironclad Confederate warship launched in 1863 and scuttled 20 months later to prevent capture, the CSS Georgia was long thought to have never been photographed. Then, in the mid-1980s, John Potter came across what appeared to be a genuine picture of the Georgia at a yard sale. Unable to afford the asking price, he snapped a picture of the photo and sent it to historian friends. They all agreed it had to be the real deal. At this point, the original photo vanished. According to Potter, the man who owned it moved away and disappeared off the face of the Earth. Over the next few years, the picture became legendary. With no blueprints or accurate likenesses of the Georgia known to exist, the photo would be utterly unique. The Army Corps of Engineers even launched a drive in 2014 to help locate it. Then, in April 2015, Potter admitted to the Associated Press that he’d faked the whole thing. It was a hoax image, a way for him to get attention. The CSS Georgia photo had never existed . Or had it? In their report, the AP claimed Potter suggested he might be pulling an elaborate double hoax. A friend of Potter’s also claimed Potter had the real photo and was intending to sell it at a high price. It’s a mystery wrapped in a mystery, and we may never get a straight answer. 5 The Mysterious Margate Family The unknown Margate family are one of Britain’s most charming recent mysteries. In 2015, the National Museum of Scotland acquired a collection of Victorian-era photographs. Most were random shots of men in suits and women with stern expressions, but a small number stood out. Running through the collection were repeated images of the same family on vacation in the Kent town of Margate. As the photographs progressed, they grew older, the children getting taller and a baby sister suddenly appearing. It was like flicking through the story of an entire family—one we know absolutely nothing about. The pictures themselves carry no formal identification, and nothing to give us any clue as to the people inside them. All we know is they were taken by a professional photographer called W. Colder, whose name appears in the background of one shot. Beyond that, we’re clueless. It’s a shame, as the photos really let us into the lives of this small family. We see them posed, at rest and at play. We watch their joys, their lives, and their children’s growth, until suddenly they stop. Who were they? Why did they stop going to Margate?

7 What Happened To Alex Gardner’s Civil War Photos The Civil War the first widely photographed conflict in history. It forever changed the way we viewed war, reporting, and images of death. A lot of this is thanks to one man: Alex Gardner. Even if you don’t know Gardner’s name, you know his work. It was Gardner who took the shots of the dead at Antietam, the shots of the Lincoln conspirators being hanged, and the iconic portrait of a pre-assassination Lincoln. He took more and better pictures than anyone else on the battlefields, even as credit for the images went to his employer. When he died, many of his original negatives went missing. They could have even been lost forever had another photographer not tracked them down in 1893. The rediscovered photos were hailed as one of the most important photographic finds in history. Then they promptly vanished again . To this day, we still have no idea where they went. A few may have made their way into museum collections, but the vast majority seem to have vanished into the ether. Some of the most valuable 19th-century negatives are still out there somewhere, now waiting to be rediscovered for the second time. 1 Share

8 When The First Color Photograph Was Taken In 1861, Thomas Sutton and James Clerk Maxwell took three shots of a tartan ribbon through green, red, and blue filters. They then combined them to create a single image. Color photography was born. Unless, that is, it had already begun a decade earlier. In winter 1851, the Daguerreian Journal, the world’s first professional photography magazine, received a letter. Written by the Rev. Levi Hill, it claimed a breakthrough with color pictures. Using a device known as a hillotype, the reverend had already captured 45 color specimens. The letter ended with a promise that Hill would unveil his prototype soon, along with an exhibition of his work. Daguerreotype experts went nuts. It was the equivalent of hearing that some hick had just perfected virtual reality in his basement. But then a funny thing happened. Hill kept pushing back the date for his big reveal. He kept pushing it and pushing it until everyone gave up and called him a faker. Then he vanished into seclusion and was never heard from again. For decades after, everyone assumed he was simply a hoaxer. Only, it might not be so simple. In the early 21st century, a group of experts analyzed the Smithsonian’s collection of hillotypes and found faint traces of color . They also found evidence that some of the slides had been altered by hand but maybe not all of them. It’s now impossible to say for certain whether Hill really did fake the lot or whether he honestly took the first color photographs. Maybe we will never know.

9 The Identity Of The First Man Photographed In 1838, a resident of Paris stopped to have his shoes shined on the Boulevard du Temple and accidentally made history. At that precise moment, Louis Daguerre was experimenting with his daguerreotype on a nearby rooftop and snapped a picture of the street. It took seven minutes to complete the exposure, which was so long that all the traffic became invisible. But our Parisian man just happened to spend those seven minutes standing still. As a result, he became the first photographed human in history. Beyond that, we know nothing about him. Literally nothing. Regarding his life, looks, occupation, income, ideals, family life, and origins, we’re completely in the dark. We don’t even know for certain that he was a Parisian or that he was having his shoes shined. Some have suggested the image actually shows a man standing at a water pump . There’s even a school of thought that says he isn’t alone in the photograph. While the supposed shoeshine boy moved too quick to be captured, a blurred image at a window might indicate that the customer shared his unwitting honor with another unknown soul.

It’s estimated we humans take around one trillion photos every single year. While the majority of them are likely either selfies or pornography (or some pleasing combination of the two), not every picture is so easily classified. Some are even deeply mysterious. Here are 10 photographic mysteries that have left the whole world baffled. 10 The Identities Of The Skyscraper Men It’s one of the most iconic images in history. A group of men sit on a steel girder, hundreds of feet above New York, calmly eating their lunch. It’s been reproduced more times than every single other image on this list combined . . . and we don’t know anything about it. This lack of knowledge includes the answer to seemingly simple questions like “who took it? ” Though the picture’s a modern icon, its author’s identity remains unknown. For years, the shot was credited to Lewis Hine, but recent research says there’s no way Hine could have been responsible. The most likely candidate is the Rockefeller Center’s old photographic director, Charles C. Ebbets, but it could just have easily been PR men Thomas Kelley or William Leftwich or somebody else altogether. But even if we’ve solved that mystery, there’s still the question of its subjects’ identities. Like the photographer, most of the men are completely anonymous . It wasn’t until 2012 that two were named definitively as Joseph Eckner and Joe Curtis, with another two tentatively identified as Matty O’Shaughnessy and Patrick “Sonny” Glynn. That still leaves seven guys who never bothered to tell anyone they were in one of the 20th century’s greatest pictures. As more time passes, it’s becoming less and less likely that their names will ever be known. 2 Likes

3 Mitchel Weiser & Bonita Bickwit On July 27, 1973, 16-year old Mitchell Weiser met his 15-year old girlfriend Bonita Bickwit at her workplace in Narrowsburg, New York. They planned to hitchhike to a concert festival 75 miles away in Watkins Glen. They were given a short ride by a truck driver and were last seen hitchhiking on State Route 97, but after that, they disappeared and it’s unknown whether they even made it to the concert. Authorities initially suspected that the young couple ran away together, but their families did not believe this. The case took an interesting turn in 2000 when a witness named Allyn Smith came forward and claimed that after the concert, he hitched a ride on a Volkswagen bus and interacted with two teenagers who may have been Mitchel and Bonita. Smith said that when they stopped to go swimming in a river, Bonita got into trouble in the water and Mitchel dived in to save her. After they were both swept away, the bus driver apparently told Smith he would call the police at the next available phone, but there is no record of any call being made. While authorities don’t discount Smith’s story, they do find it strange that he made no attempt to help the couple and waited 26 years to come forward. Since there is no evidence to confirm if Smith’s story is true, Mitchel and Bonita are still officially considered missing. 2 Conor & Sheila Dwyer One of the most baffling missing persons cases in the history of Ireland occurred in 1991 when an elderly couple named Conor and Sheila Dwyer mysteriously vanished from the town of Fermoy. The last confirmed sighting of them was when they attended Mass at St. Patrick’s church on April 30. After not hearing from them for weeks, Sheila’s sister decided to visit the couple’s home on May 18. When nobody answered, she decided to notify the police. They arrived and broke down the door, but could find no sign of the Dwyers inside. The Dwyers’ Toyota Cressida was nowhere to be found, but their home was otherwise completely normal. There were no signs of struggle, robbery or forced entry. The house was secure and all their personal items, including their clothing and glasses, were still there. The couples’ passports and over £1000 in cash were stashed in a tin. Curiously enough, investigators found out that Conor Dwyer had previously gone missing for a couple of years sometime in the 1980s. He eventually returned, but never provided any explanation about where he had been. Unfortunately, history would not repeat itself and Conor didn’t return this time around. Authorities have not found any evidence to suggest what might have happened to the couple and 20 years later, this remains one of Ireland’s strangest unsolved mysteries. 1 William & Margaret Patterson Sometime after the evening of March 5, 1957, 52-year old William Patterson and his 42-year old wife, Margaret, vanished from their home in El Paso, Texas. The couple’s vehicles had been left behind, along with their cat and the house seemed to be in disarray. It was initially believed that they had left for Florida on an extended vacation, but a neighbor finally reported the Pattersons missing five months later. The neighbor had been at the Patterson home on the night of their disappearance and said they seemed very upset. A mysterious letter from William soon appeared, providing specific instructions about how his businesses and properties were to be distributed to three of his employees. Authorities suspected the note was not actually written by William and one of these employees was seen working on William’s boat at the Patterson home right before they vanished. In 1984, a man who had been hired to clean the Patterson home after their disappearance claimed he found some blood under the water heater and a piece of human scalp on the boat’s propeller. He also saw one of the aforementioned employees removing bloody sheets and putting them in the trunk of his car, but waited 27 years to tell police since he was an illegal immigrant at the time. While there are still no answers in the Pattersons’ disappearance, their old house still remains… and is rumored to be haunted by their ghosts! so my ppu as we celebrate this valentine let not throw caution in the air.

4 Hue Pham & Hue Tran In May 2005, Hue Pham and Hue Tran , a retired Vietnamese-American couple who had been together 49 years, embarked on a seven-day Caribbean cruise on the Carnival Cruise Line ship, “Destiny”. They took their daughter, Sharon, and granddaughter along with them. At around midnight on May 8, Sharon received a phone call in her cabin, asking her to retrieve some items from the reception desk. They turned out to be her parents’ flip-flops and her mother’s purse. They had been found on a deck the couple liked to frequent, but there was no sign of them anywhere. Sharon immediately searched for her parents and informed the crew about their disappearance, but it took them hours to make an official announcement and inform the Coast Guard. The deck where the couple went missing overlooked a 70-foot drop into the ocean, but the ship continued on course and did not turn around to search the area where they could have fallen overboard. The cruise line suggested that they may have committed suicide, but their family did not believe that at all. Days later, the FBI finally conducted an investigation and while they ruled out suicide, they could also find no evidence of foul play. The Pham children have been highly critical of how Carnival Cruise Line has handled the disappearance and even testified before Congress about improving safety measures on cruise ships. However, they have yet to receive any answers about what really happened to their parents. |

6 Claude & Martha Sue Shelton 37-year old Claude Shelton and his 27-year old wife, Martha Sue, lived with their three children at a residence in a trailer park in Corbin, Kentucky. On the evening of May 21, 1971, the couple put their children to bed and then left the trailer park in their Ford Galaxie. Neither the Sheltons nor their car has ever been seen again. No one believed that the couple would have willingly abandoned their children, so authorities were completely baffled about what might have compelled them to drive away and leave their kids alone in the middle of the night. One of the Shelton children claimed they overheard Claude asking Sue, “Are you going with me or are you going to stay here?” before hinting that they were going to drive to King’s Truck Stop, which was five miles away. However, authorities could not find anyone from the truck stop who remembered seeing them there that night. The Sheltons had also saved up over $600, which they kept in a bowl in the kitchen, but that money disappeared along with them. Two months after the couple went missing, the body of an unidentified woman was found in Oregon which resembled Sue and in 2009, DNA tests were performed to check for a possible match. However, the body turned out not to be her, so the fate of the Sheltons remains a mystery. 5 Danielle Imbo & Richard Petrone Danielle Imbo & Richard Petrone , a Philadelphia couple in their mid-thirties, spent the evening of February 19, 2005 having drinks with friends. At around 11:30 PM, they left the establishment in Richard’s Dodge Dakota pickup truck. After that, they just seemed to vanish off the face of the Earth. Since then, there has been no activity on their bank accounts or credit cards and their cell phones have remained turned off. Danielle and Richard each had a child from a previous relationship and it seemed unlikely that they would just abandon them. It was suspected that the couple might have accidentally driven into the nearby Delaware River, but while a search of the water turned up several submerged vehicles, none of them were Richard’s pickup truck. Authorities soon investigated Danielle’s estranged husband, Joe Imbo, who had allegedly exchanged threats with Richard over the phone. In fact, Danielle had also reportedly told Richard she wanted to break up with him, though she still agreed to go out with him on the night they disappeared. All these suspicions have caused a lot of tension between Danielle and Richard’s separate families, though there is no evidence to suggest foul play on anyone’s part. However, after eight years, there is still no trace of Danielle Imbo, Richard Petrone or their vehicle. 1 Share
