Nyesom Wike – Why I congratulated Buhari https://www.xtrablack.com/news/nyesom-wike-why-i-congratulated-buhari/ |
Xtrablack.com https://www.xtrablack.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Screen-Shot-2019-06-04-at-10.50.15-AM.png President Muhammadu Buhari has on Thursday assured Nigerians that the Federal Government will not inflict additional hardship on citizens, rather it will keep seeking ways to ameliorate their sufferings and create a more enabling environment for everyone to thrive. Disclosing this in a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, President Buhari said that On fuel prices, I agree with you on the need to eliminate corruption and inefficiencies in the sector. I want to assure you that, as an Administration, we have no intention of inflicting any additional hardship on Nigerians,’’ President Buhari told the new executive of Trade Union Congress led by its President, Comrade Quadri Olaleye, at the State House. The President said the Federal Government remains committed to the implementation of the national minimum wage, pointing out that the inaugural Federal Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday focused on the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework, which included discussions around the new minimum wage. “During our first term, we secured the nation’s territorial integrity and continue to protect the lives and properties of our citizens. We introduced various economic stimulus packages that support businesses and traders at all levels, promoted backward integration programmes especially in the agricultural sector to enhance our food security while creating jobs. “We embarked on the most ambitious infrastructure development and rehabilitation projects this country has seen in decades. We also introduced the largest Social Investment Program in Sub-Saharan Africa. “Although these programs and many more successfully lifted Nigeria out of recession, the full impact is yet to be felt. In the next four years, we shall sustain this momentum and by the grace of God, lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty,’’ he said. President Buhari, who noted that his administration will work hard to improve the livelihood of citizens, said most of the inherited challenges were avoidable, if some previous governments had been keener on investing on infrastructure and human capacity. “The points you raised are all interconnected. The lack of power and infrastructure due to decades of under-investment led to the closure or inefficient operations of a number of factories across the country. This meant the private sector was unable to create jobs fast enough to cope with our increasing population. “You will agree with me that, all these challenges and many more were long ago left unattended to, thereby leaving the country in the mired state we inherited. You all will also testify to having seen and experienced what we have put in place as an administration to address these challenges,’’ the President added. In his remarks, the President of TUC advised the Federal Government to pay more attention on the welfare of Nigerians by avoiding increase of fuel price and ensuring implementation of the National Minimum Wage, which had been delayed by negotiations on the consequential adjustments. “We are, however, disturbed that the enthusiasm is turning into a nightmare,’’ he said, urging the President to focus on poverty reduction and improving security. Olaleye assured the President that TUC will support the government as it tackles challenges facing the country, commending him for increase in Internally Generated Revenue, steps on the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and signing of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement. https://www.xtrablack.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Xenophobia.png Xtrablack.com THE serial xenophobic attacks on Nigerians should not have been the best way South Africans could have repaid Nigeria for our contributions to the anti-apartheid struggle. I have been wondering what would be running through the minds of ANC cadres who joined us as students in Ife and Ibadan in our university days in the ’80s, seeing citizens of a country that was so nice to them being bothered on the streets. It is a time to remember the “Africa Has Come Of Age” speech of General Murtala Muhammed at Organisation of African Unity, OAU, extra-ordinary summit in Addis Ababa on January 11,1976 where he declared: “Mr. Chairman, when I contemplate the evils of apartheid, my heart bleeds and I am sure the heart of every true blooded African bleeds… Rather than join hands with the forces fighting for self-determination and against racism and apartheid, the United States policy makers clearly decided that it was in the best interests of their country to maintain White supremacy and minority regimes in Africa. Xenophobia Africa has come of age. It’s no longer under the orbit of any extra continental power. It should no longer take orders from any country, however powerful. The fortunes of Africa are in our hands to make or to mar. For too long have we been kicked around: for too long have we been treated like adolescents who cannot discern their interests and act accordingly. For too long has it been presumed that the African needs outside ‘experts’ to tell him who are his friends and who are his enemies. The time has come when we should make it clear that we can decide for ourselves; that we know our own interests and how to protect those interests; that we are capable of resolving African problems without presumptuous lessons in ideological dangers which, more often than not, have no relevance for us, nor for the problem at hand. Murtala Ramat Muhammed was killed 34 days after making this speech and General Olusegun Obasanjo became his replacement as Military Head of State to continue Nigeria’s push against apartheid. At the World Conference against Apartheid in August 23,1977; Oliver Tambo said about Murtala and Obasanjo: “We refer also to the late General Murtala Muhammed who, hardly 18 months ago in Addis Ababa, said ‘when I contemplate the evils of apartheid my heart bleeds…’. We did not know then that a month later Murtala Muhammed`s heart would bleed for the last time, through fatal wounds opened by the hands of crazed assassins. Neither did the world know then that five months later the blood of South African youth, men, women and children would flow on the streets of Soweto, Langa, Mamelodi, Alexandra and other Black ghettos at the hands of the same enemy forces…. “The historic statement made to this Conference yesterday by the Head of State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Lt. General Olusegun Obasanjo, in the name of the people of Nigeria, was itself a lasting tribute to the life and memory of Murtala Muhammed and a further reassurance that in Obasanjo we have another Muhammed.” I must say without mincing words that but for the lives of the people involved and the destruction of property, it was clear that Nigeria would come to this sorry pass given our choices of failure that have reduced us from hero of Africa to zero of the continent. I lived in Ghana between 2015 and 2016 for a programme at the University of Ghana and it was always an embarrassment as lecturer after lecturer used Nigeria as a reference point for the failure of Africa. Ghanaian History teacher Outside the university I could see the tension already building up against Nigerians that it would take a few years down the line before we start to hear of similar attacks in that country. We were not as nice to Ghanaians like South Africans. The “Ghana-Must-Go” saga is a reminder of how we bundled them out of our country when they rushed here to do all sorts of menial jobs in their days of adversity. I can recall the disdain with which many Nigerians held them at that period. We had a Ghanaian History teacher called Mr. Sakyi in my secondary days. A boy misbehaved in his class one day and he called him out for punishment. As the boy stepped forward, Mr. Sakyi asked him to hold the desk and he raised his cane to flog him. Before the cane could descend, the naughty boy moved away and said: “Mi o jegba Ghana (a Ghanaian won’t flog me!) The wayward school pupil typified the boisterous Nigerian spirit. To see Nigerians trooping to that country today to enjoy the developmental strides they have created riding from their trials is a humbling experience. At a time Nigeria is shutting its Western borders with Benin Republic, three auto companies are heading to Ghana to set up car plants with Nigeria obviously being their target market. They have heard too loudly from Boko Haram and Miyetti Allah to contemplate making Nigeria their investment destination. I felt so small in Kenya 20 years ago when my wife and I had to travel with Kenyan Airways to India. We arrived Nairobi in the evening and were expecting a connecting flight to Mumbai within two hours. But it was not so. The airline officials started sorting out the passengers and leading them out. By the time they were done, there were over 20 passengers left who were all Nigerians. A lady then moved over to give us a sad news: “There is no connecting flight to Mumbai till tomorrow. But unfortunately the green passport is not allowed into Nairoabi without a transit visa. Make yourselves comfortable till tomorrow evening.” Nigerians who were treated like Royals in London in the ’70s once the green passport was presented? It was a time 98 Kobo fetched a British pound! My wife and I found our voices to protest the treatment on the ground that it was not our fault that there was no connecting flight and we should not be punished for the inefficiency of Kenyan Airways. The lady looked at me and gave it to Nigeria: “If airline business is a very easy thing to do, your country would have one plane in the air.” Twenty years after that insult, my country still does not have a plane flying. Nigeria Air was launched on the Internet about two years ago and became defunct on the cyberspace after the “project” gulped some billions of Naira. Two decades after the taunt, the Nigerian government shamelessly and gleefully announced that my good brother and friend, Mr. Allen Onyema has gracefully volunteered to evacuate Nigerians from South Africa as the only planes Nigeria still runs as a country belong to the presidential fleet. As at time of writing this, only 400 Nigerians have agreed to come home. It is most unlikely that there would be less than a million Nigerians in South Africa. Nigeria is currently facing serious internal security challenges, the most serious ones being the Boko Haram insurgency in the north-eastern states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa; and the Niger Delta militancy and piracy in the south-south geopolitical zone, comprising Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers states. Additionally, there are security challenges posed by violent crimes, ethno-religious conflicts, resource-based conflicts, trans-border criminal activities, and election-induced violence. All these security challenges undoubtedly pose some threats to the social, economic and political stability of not only Nigeria, but also extending to the West African sub-region, where more than half of the population comes from Nigeria. This can as well be improved upon. Currently, the most serious security threats in Nigeria are those in the category of discontent or separatist agenda, specifically the violent extremism of Boko Haram and the violent militancy in the Niger Delta. While the former uses religion as its platform, employing such tactics as suicide bombing, organized attacks on police and military installations, terrorizing rural communities, kidnapping of secondary school students etc; the latter is resource-based, and uses the control of oil found in its domain as its platform, knowing that about 90 percent of Nigeria’s revenue comes from that natural resource. The most existential threat to Nigeria’s national security is the violent extremism being unleashed by the Boko Haram group which has its main base in the north-east. Although the Niger Delta militant groups were the first to use improvised explosive devices (IEDs) for their operations, the idea of suicide bombing was introduced into Nigeria by the Boko Haram violent extremists. Honing this down to our nation’s political atmosphere, where elections are becoming a “do or die” affair, with most politicians becoming very militant in their approach. It has reached a stage where those seeking political offices aim by all means to control the economic resources meant for the citizens towards their own political interest, especially the governorship candidates who create armies of political thugs whom they not only arm with dangerous weapons, but also provide with illicit drugs in order to protect their interests even if it requires using violence. It is a well-known fact that the formation of the militant groups in the Niger Delta area and the Boko Haram sect in the north-east were at one time or another, part of the army of political thugs formed by certain gubernatorial candidates and politicians alike in the Niger Delta area and Borno State, respectively. https://www.xtrablack.com/news/security-challenges-in-nigeria-matters-arising/ |

Issues Encountered by Nigerian Entrepreneur and Possible Solutions Xtrablack.com The success enjoyed by most industrialized countries can be attributed to the role played by technological innovation and entrepreneurship, both of which continue to drive their economies today. These two factors are seen as key components for the industrialization and development of African countries. The Nigerian government has recognized this fact and has taken measures aimed at promoting and cultivating the entrepreneurial culture in our country. Through the Nigerian Investing Commission (NIC), our government has in the past introduced a policy that required university students regardless of their area of study to take courses in entrepreneurship. While our government is putting extra effort in promoting entrepreneurship in Nigeria, there are still a number of problems that a Nigerian Entrepreneur faces. Below are some of the problems encountered and possible solutions. * Diversifying the Economy Though our country economy has over the last couple of decades relied heavily on its oil production, we must find ways to diversify our economy and avoid the over reliance on oil. Like other developing countries, Nigeria is facing an increase in its unemployment rate that is now at 6% and is on the increase, with many graduates finding it hard to get jobs while most of those who get jobs are underemployed. This coupled with the global financial crisis in which massive numbers of employees are being laid off; entrepreneurship is seen as an essential key if we want our country to achieve its ambition of being an industrialized nation by the year 2020. * Unfriendly Business Climate Being an entrepreneur in Nigeria requires great determination as practicing and potential business owners are faced with countless challenges. Nigerian’s business climate should be made welcoming to those in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The role played by these MSMEs should not be underestimated since majority of the thriving businesses fall in this category and for us to achieve our goals, adequate attention and support must be directed towards these institutions. To be able to help and protect entrepreneurs, we must first have a clear idea of the challenges facing our entrepreneurs in their pursuit of making Nigeria a prosperous country. * Lack of Credit Facilities Potential Nigeria entrepreneurs go through many hardships when trying to access credit for their businesses. Though there is a wide range of financial institutions that offer business loans, they usually charge high interest rates deterring aspiring entrepreneurs. For instance, major banks have pegged their lending rates to as much a 28% deterring potential entrepreneurs who are mostly low income earners. Other obstacles faced by our entrepreneurs include severe collateral conditions set by banks and other lending institutions. Though our government through the Central Bank and the Banker’s Committee came up with guidelines requiring banks to set aside 10% of their profits for funding MSMEs, majority of these banks have been reluctant to do so. This has led to the emergence of micro-finance institutions which though helpful are not sufficient for meeting the financial requirements. * Multiple Taxation Continue @ link below https://www.xtrablack.com/update/problems-encountered-by-nigerian-entrepreneur-and-possible-solutions/

There is a growing communication mix with the advent of the internet in Nigeria through online television and radio. More and more young people are beginning to follow television and radio via the internet because of its interactive nature. News and lifestyle gist are followed more on the internet by teenagers than in main stream media, in spite of the fact that the nation accounts of several television and FM radio stations. The social media has made it easier for people to watch videos through Facebook, and YouTube. Several millions of people around the world have been reached through online television and radio platforms. The fact is that young people are attracted to online television and radio because they are a computer savvy generation. More so because social interactions have moved to space. The internet gives them the opportunity to connect with like minds with little or no restrictions. Interestingly, agenda setting is being tailored through internet communication, from music to entertainment. Live and real-time updates has made the internet a place to be for many artists, musicians and media analysts. An internet television and radio presenter, Mr. Barry Nwibira of AKPO’s online TV / Radio said that his station enjoys a massive followership from young people, that the future is here with the internet. He stated that the program he currently anchors ‘Campus Matters’ is trending among the youth population. The response was the same for online Television Nijiezie and Kemdrex TV. Many of the traditional television and FM radio stations are beginning to explore the internet to reach out to their followers, in order not to be left behind in an ever-changing world. However, the high cost of data and internet service disruption is still a challenge to the full utilization of the internet as a medium of television and radio communication in Nigeria. It is hoped that with the attraction of more investment in the information and communication sector in Nigeria, the online television and radio would witnessed a massive change. The advantages of internet communication are so numerous, considering the multiplier effects it would have in agriculture, commerce, education, science and technology, sports and entertainment. More frontiers of development would be opened as many start-ups by young people would be facilitated through the online television and radio communication. A major fall out of this change would be the integration of economies of developing nations like Nigeria through Information Communication and Technology (ICT). All that is required now, is that Government and other critical interests put plan to action.
