That way, our Legends are not overworked as they gradually help the younger ones settle well and take the baton from them.

Thankfully, their league is very active, and they are all getting competitive game time to help them attain full form ahead of WAFCON2026. So please be patient with these three and don't be unnecessarily harsh about criticising them, as they might take their time as the tournament progresses, but they won't disappoint for sure.🙏🏾🙏🏾

Post-Match Analysis- Nigeria 🇳🇬 2️⃣vs3️⃣Malawi

Goalkeeper
I have NO iota of blame for Amaka- she is the same WSL outstanding Goalkeeper with Brighton and Hove Albion and unarguably the BEST in the World. The formation, choice of players to execute, non-existent midfield and defence all exposed her. In a bid to make up for a collapsed defence, she was forgotten, her "safe haven" her 18-yard protection, and we all paid dearly for it.

Defence
There was nothing about the defence that shocked me; we already went with Isah of Israeli Division 2 ahead of Nicole Payne, who plays in the best Female Football League in the World. I still need an explanation for why Ogbonna, whom Randy retired 3 years ago, made this team when Madugu cannot trust her to stand in for Imuran. Once Plumptre was injured, it became a red flag that we needed two solid LBs, but Madugu chose a player he isn't confident in to stand in, overtly relying on Imuran until Karma caught up with him.

I have NO blame to put on Alozie for any reason - she is primarily a Right Winger whose game was modified to a Right Back. Michelle is upwardly Mobile and has no business being drafted into an unfair position, knowing that spot would receive maximum bashing. Naturally, gifted LBs would do better with the help of a Left Winger like Babajide.

I have made it clear Oladipo should be drafted to start filling in for Ohale, but "The Older The Better" thinks otherwise. Shukurat needed a seamless transition for such huge shoes, but the coach isn't bothered about a succession plan. Ohale has paid her dues; that's why I made a 3-5-2 formation to factor her in if the coach insisted on her experience, but it was always obvious we can't do a 4-woman defence with Ohale in a competitive game.

Midfield
Ayibde remains a trusted war horse, but it is crystal clear she can't Marshall the midfield without a double pivot to provide extra cover
Again, Madugu chose to expose her and played Ajibade in an unfamiliar position, a move we all saw did not work at the last WAFCON. The midfield was begging for Toni Payne, who was kept on the bench until the Malawians got their confidence against us. My Formation suggested we played and won from the midfield, but a tactically inept coach made sure the same midfield was complicit by his formation and choice of players.

Forwards
I lay every blame at Madugu’s feet because his choice of forwards at WAFCON2024 finals that ensured we conceded two goals, made Okoronkwo labour for balls by dropping deep, overworking her in the process, played out again.

Ihezuo, who hasn't played any game since a major injury, mysteriously got called up despite not being fit or in form and started ahead of Rinsola Babajide, who is in hot form from club antecedents and would have acted as a double shield for Alozie whilst helping Esther with remarkable passes into the dangerous areas.

I'm glad Ijamilusi whom some of you threw darts at me for was properly exposed by Madugu by handing her the Number 9 shirt. How did she merit a call-up from a league where we have no idea what happens? A player with questionable final third balls and who won't offer anything as a forward in competitive games. Nigerians saw ball to hand at last wafcon as validating her call and those tap-ins could have been scored by a grandmother. You see why I continually said she would have left China if her football has improved but a lot of people who talk about the game have no business having an opinion.
Realistically we took only 5 productive forwards to this WAFCON out of 9.

Salute to Uchenna Kanu whose work spoke for her ahead of WAFCON. From Hat-Tricks to breaking club and league records, it was crystal clear she was unfairly kept on the bench for an unfit and out of form player. The impact she made in less than 30minutes will make you question the competence of our entire technical crew for keeping such an high impact player on the bench. She scored a goal and had another cleared on the line.

Whatever happened last night was no surprise to some of us, what came as a surprise was how everyone suddenly started claiming they supported me and believed my analysis all of a sudden. So who are those noisemakers who were developing mouth diarrhea on my page?🙄

Football will disgrace you if you try to cut corners but reward you if you put in the work , that is exactly what we have seen with Madugu and his fellow racket players who has no iota of business being in a successful team like Super Falcons.

Picardia: In Argentine Football, Villainy is a Virtue | by Sayo Aluko

[Caveat: Long Post for Educational Purposes only. This is NOT a Ronaldo vs Messi Piece; yes, be tempted, but I advise, don’t fall for it]

At about this time exactly one week ago, the footballing world had just finished witnessing was supposed to be another exciting World Cup final. At the final whistle, two things had happened. Spain had become world champions and Argentina had become the world villains. Not merely because the latter lost but because what unfolded over those 90 minutes, and even more so after the match ended, left billions of football lovers asking questions that had very little to do with football itself.

Over the past week, one question refused to leave my mind: Why?

Why did a team blessed with such extraordinary footballing ability repeatedly seem drawn towards football’s darkest instincts? Answering that was exactly what I spent part of theweek exploring. But before I continue, a little background...

See, before Chelsea FC and Siuuu!, I am first and always, a very invested football fan. I started watching football at a very young age, I was as a preschooler. The USA 1994 World Cup was my initiation into building formative interest. It was hosted the same period Nigerians were commemorating, via protests, the 1-year anniversary of the annulment of the June 12 election. While the tournament served as a potential national distraction, MKO Abiola was arrested just a day or so after Nigeria's first match. We lived in Abeokuta, MKO's hometown, and as such, residents took the annulment, the arrest, and all that followed much more personally.

So, I remember watching my dad and neighbours having those terse conversations that swerved between Abacha-Babangida and Rashidi-Keshi. I particularly remember Daddy Fisayo, a neighbour, cursing Babangida and Abacha in one breath and celebrating Rashidi Yekini's historic goal just minutes later. Those images in the week of night serve as my earliest recollection of football high, and some pixels from then still remain etched somewhere in my brain.

By Atlanta 1996, two years later, I had become full-blown as my interest in soccer was growing in sync with my frontal lobe. Nigeria winning at Atlanta, and seeing the entire neighbourhood defying the night to spill into the street in unbridled joy just cemented my love patapata. I'll share how I became a Chelsea fan later, but yeah, my football-loving foundation is rich in originality, emotional inheritance and unforgettable colour; a major reason I love the game so deeply and cannot bear watching it being hurt.

So, yes, you can imagine my pain watching last Sunday's World Cup final; watching how Argentina turned up not just to hurt footballl but to assassinate it. Yes, we already knew they could be combative and brutal, but how they brought their brutish best to a supposed world cup final filled me with resentful disappointment, same way billions felt across the globe.

Like I said in my '7 Things' review after the game, the disappointment robbed me of words, and anyone who read what I eventually wrote would understand the weight. I couldn't even banter fluidly.

But then, from Sunday till this moment, more clips and more camera angles exposing even more of what the Argentines did that day have continued to emerge.

We all saw Paredes violently grab Eric García by the neck and punch-push Gavi to the floor. What we didn’t initially see was Molina, just seconds earlier, in a bizarre, bile-filled moment, dangerously striking Rodri in the chest completely unprovoked. We also didn’t see an Argentine member of the coaching staff, instead of restraining his own players, joining the melee to strike another Spaniard in the neck.

We all saw how Enzo Fernandez tackled Cubarsí in a way that made the Spaniard spin like a windmill before crashing onto the turf. We also saw what followed: the desperate attempt by Messi and Enzo himself to turn the incident on its head by calling for a Cucurella red card instead.

What many of us did not see was that, at the exact same moment, Tagliafico, in a bizarre attempt to distract the referee from the possibility of an Enzo red card, appeared to feign an injury while standing metres away from the actual incident. He was completely alone, yet the instant Cubarsi went down, he too collapsed dramatically, clutching his face and body as though he had just been struck by a truck, writhing in faux pain.

What followed was even more shocking.

Messi and several Argentine players immediately rushed towards the referee just as he was about to deal with the Enzo-Cubarsí incident, repeatedly pointing towards Tagliafico as though he required more urgent attention. Messi, as captain, was the most animated among them. When that distraction appeared not to work, the Cucurella episode suddenly became the next point of emphasis. Looking back, it explained the desperation with which they tried to manufacture a controversy where none seemed to exist.

When I saw the Tagliafico sequence, I was genuinely shocked. I mean, imagine the depth of instinct required for such coordinated deception to happen almost spontaneously. And the speed at which it unfolded? Naah, it shook me.

And these exposés are only a fraction of what new footage has revealed. I have watched 13-minute compilations. There are others, including hour-long compilations documenting the gamesmanship the Argentines displayed throughout the tournament.

So why?

My search led me to two concepts deeply embedded in Argentine football culture:
1] Picardia.
2] Bilardismo.

I’d never heard either word before. I finished reading about them feeling both enlightened… and disturbed.

In Argentina, Picardia is the footballing concept that legitimizes obtaining competitive advantage through deception and cheating. With Picardia, it is okay for the player to manipulate the referee, provoke an opponent into retaliation, draw fouls, exaggerate contact, waste time, disguise intent, and deliberately blur the lines. In other words, It values malicious intent as long as it delivers a victory; it legitimizes deception that escapes punishment.

The concept is deeply rooted in the Potrero, the rough, unpaved neighborhood fields where many Argentine youngsters learned football. In a Potrero, children are routinely played against adults; condemned to an uneven physical disadvantage, they are forced to develop “la nuestra”, a manipulative way out by using the opponent’s own momentum against them; they learn to absorb heavy hits, mask their pain, and instead plot a silent, calculated revenge within the flow of the game. If you cry, complain to an elder, or demand a foul in the potrero, you are mocked and ostracized. Those formative years, spent in an environment of relentless structural chaos, are said to forge the hardened, manipulative, and combative temperament often associated with Argentine football and players.

The most famous example of Picardia in Argentine football history is Diego Maradona’s notorious “Hand of God” goal against England in the 1986 World Cup, where he used his hand to deceive the referee and score. Outside Argentina, millions remember it as one of football’s most notorious acts of deception. Inside Argentina, it occupies a sacred place in Argentine football folklore, and it is celebrated as Picardia Criolla [criolla as in “Creole” - highly seasoned craftiness]

If Picardia explains the instinct, Bilardismo fuels it with a sense of legitimacy and explains why the instinct endures.

Named after Carlos Bilardo, the man who coached Argentina to the 1986 World Cup victory, Bilardismo is less a tactical system and more a cynical worldview governed by a single commandment:

Winning isn’t the most important thing; it’s the only thing. So win at all costs, even if you have to be a villain.

Bilardismo takes the rules of the street and institutionalizes them into professional football through extreme methods. It celebrates the “dark arts” of football and relegates technical brilliance into a second position. To Bilardo, football is about winning the psychological battle first, even if that means bending football’s both written and unwritten laws.

For example, he instructed his players to intensely research the personal lives of their opponents. Players would whisper deeply unsettling, personal insults about an opponent's family, wife, or past traumas during matches to make them snap and get red-carded. During his own playing days in the 1960s, Bilardo and his teammates hid pins in their socks to prick opposing forwards during corner kicks.

It was no surprise that it was under his watch that Maradona did the Hand of God thing in ‘86. Four years later at the 1990 World Cup round of 16 against arch-rivals Brazil, the Argentine dugout, under the guise of fair play, handed a water bottle spiked with tranquilizers [Roiphenol] to Brazilian defender Branco during an injury stoppage. Branco drank it, became visibly dizzy, and struggled for the rest of the match, which Argentina won 1–0.

In short, Bilardismo says that anti-football antics and dark arts are considered legitimate if it increases the probability of victory.

Till date, both concepts are celebrated in Argentina as culture and footballing rote. While they celebrate Maradona’s Hand of God as Picardia Criolla, they celebrate the 1990 Branco poisoning as “Holy Water.” And if you look into recent examples including last Sunday’s final, you’ll see Picardia and Bilardismo written all over them.

In the 2014 final vs Germany, three German players went home with bloodied bodies from Argentine tackles. I particularly remember Schweinsteiger's bloodied face. I also remember Christoph Kramer almost losing his jaw along with his brain after Ezekiel Garay lunged into him; Kramer had to be substituted in the 31st minute after asking the Ref, "is this the World Cup final?" This was after he had approached Thomas Muller and mistaking him for Gerd Muller; then asking captain Philipp Lahm if he could wear the captain’s armband; he had also approached goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and asked to take his place in goal. He was concussed for days because an Argentine hit him. Till date, Kramer retains absolutely no personal memory of the atmosphere, the kickoff, or any part of the biggest match of his life.

Argentina’s game against France both in 2018 and 2022 followed same pattern of violence and the French left with marks. In the 2022 final, Argentina set a modern record by committing 26 fouls in a single World Cup final. Their game against the Netherlands in that same tournament saw 18 yellow cards for a reason, another World Cup record, highlighted by Paredes booting the ball directly into the Dutch dugout at close range, triggering a mass melee.

Of course, no. This is not an Argentine witch-hunt, especially as no nation or footballing culture has a monopoly on villainy or notoriety. Every football nation has players who dive or commit cynical fouls. English football has wrestled with hooliganism. Italian football has wrestled with bribery and simulation; the examples abound. But there is an important distinction between acknowledging that gamesmanship exists and elevating it into a celebrated identity.

That distinction is everything, and that is where Argentina falters with Picardia.

I mean, imagine if we talk about the June 12 annulment with fondness in Nigeria while canonizing Babangida for it. Imagine if a father in a Nigerian household looks up to examples of bad leadership for his own home. Imagine corruption becoming folklore. At that point, corruption would no longer be merely a national problem. It would have become part of our cultural ethos.

Every nation has its sins. Do they celebrate them?

Today, with and despite their own flaws, Brazil romanticized jogo bonito into its celebrated identity, the Netherlands gave us Total Football, Spain elevated positional play into philosophy. Then, Argentina, despite many other celebratable qualities, cultivated a lasting admiration for Picardia and Bilardsimo.

And ideas, once celebrated long enough, become habits. Habits, inherited across generations, become identity.

That identity, in part, explains why we watched a final featuring Messi, finishers like Alvarez and Lautaro, and a golazo-merchant like Mac Allister, yet Argentina failed to register a single shot on target while racking up a catalogue of fouls. Then, after the final whistle, their players turned to violence and provoked a brawl, while their captain, Messi, simply stood by and watched.

Well, this is why football is so fascinating. The game doesn’t merely reveal talent; it often reveals culture. And one can inarguably tell that the defining takeaway from the 2026 World Cup was watching Argentina, and, by extension, Argentine football, unravel before the eyes of billions.

Yesterday, I read Argentine President Javier Milei’s response to the week-long scrutiny and criticism his country has faced in the aftermath of that final.

His words?

“They are jealous of us.”

I smiled. I wasn't surprised, because by yesterday, I had become familiar with the tenets of Picardia and Bilardismo.

So, his response made perfect sense. I understood exactly where it was coming from.
