This photo tells the story of the June 12, 1993 presidential elections winner, Chief Moshood K.O Abiola who was killed in prison by Abacha's government. General Sani Abacha, MKO Abiola and Bola A In this rare photo, General Sani Abacha, Bola Ahmed Tinubu (at the rear) and winner of the acclaimed June 12, 1993 presidential elections, Chief Moshood K.O Abiola are seen walking in Abuja few days after Abacha seized power in a palace coup, 1993. Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, died in 1998, after being denied victory in the 12 June 1993 presidential elections when the entire election results were dubiously annulled by the preceding military president Ibrahim Babangida because of alleged evidence that they were corrupt and unfair. According to information on Wikipidea, Abiola overwhelmingly defeated his rival, Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention. The election was declared Nigeria's freest and fairest presidential election by national and international observers, with Abiola even winning in his Northern opponent's home state. Abiola won at the national capital, Abuja, the military polling stations, and over two-thirds of Nigerian states. The reason why the election was so historic, was because men of Northern descent had largely dominated Nigeria's political landscape since independence. The fact that Moshood Abiola (a Southern Muslim) was able to secure a national mandate freely and fairly remains unprecedented in Nigeria's history. However, the election was annulled by Ibrahim Babangida, a political crisis that ensued which led to General Sani Abacha seizing power later that year. During preparations for the 2011 Nigerian Presidential elections there were calls from several quarters to remember MKO Abiola. In 1994 Moshood Abiola declared himself the lawful president of Nigeria in the Epetedo area of Lagos island, an area mainly populated by (Yoruba) Lagos Indigenes. He had recently returned from a trip to win the support of the international community for his mandate. After declaring himself president he was declared wanted and was accused of treason and arrested on the orders of military President General Sani Abacha, who sent 200 police vehicles to bring him into custody. MKO Abiola has been referred to as Nigeria's greatest statesman. His second wife Alhaja Kudirat Abiola was assassinated in Lagos in 1996 after declaring public support for her husband. Moshood Abiola was detained for four years, largely in solitary confinement with a Bible, Qur'an, and fourteen guards as companions. During that time, Pope John Paul II, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and human rights activists from all over the world lobbied the Nigerian government for his release. The sole condition attached to the release of Chief Abiola was that he renounce his mandate, something that he refused to do, although the military government offered to compensate him and refund his extensive election expenses. For this reason Chief Abiola became extremely troubled when Kofi Annan and Emeka Anyaoku reported to the world that he had agreed to renounce his mandate after they met with him to tell him that the world would not recognise a five-year-old election. Abiola died under suspicious circumstances shortly after the death of General Abacha. Moshood Abiola died on the day that he was due to be released, on 7 July 1998. While the official autopsy stated that Abiola died of natural causes, Abacha's Chief Security Officer, al-Mustapha has alleged that Moshood Abiola was in fact beaten to death. al-Mustapha, who was detained by the Nigerian government, but later released, claims to have video and audiotapes showing how Abiola was beaten to death. The final autopsy report, which was produced by a group of international coroners has never been publicly released. Irrespective of the exact circumstances of his death, it is clear that Chief Abiola received insufficient medical attention for his existing health conditions. As recounted at the time in a BBC interview with special envoy Thomas R. Pickering, an American delegation, which included Susan Rice, visited Abiola and during their meeting with him, Abiola fell ill, with what was presumed to be a heart attack which caused his death. A clause in Abiola's will required that his heirs could prove that he was their father. Over seventy people were able to show that Abiola was their father using DNA tests. Seven children were descended from his second wife, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola. Narrating how South Africa fought to free the men held in prison by Abacha and his cohorts, former President Thabo Mbeki said: "President Mandela resisted all this until news came through that on the very first day of the 1995 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) held in New Zealand CHOGM, the Nigerian Government had executed Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight of his Ogoni colleagues. He then immediately joined others strongly to condemn the Abacha Government and approved the suspension of Nigeria from the Commonwealth. Thereafter, despite strong presentations about human rights, South Africa's strenuous efforts to get SADC and the OAU to impose sanctions against Nigeria produced a negative response throughout the Continent, leaving South Africa isolated on this matter. President Mandela had visited Nigeria in 1994 and engaged General Abacha on the matter of the release of Mr Abiola. In July 1995 I led a small delegation of our Government to Nigeria to meet General Abacha. This time our focus was on the two matters of persuading General Abacha and his Government to release the Ogoni leader, Ken Saro-Wiwa, and his co-accused, as well as to release Generals Olusegun Obasanjo and Shehu Yar’ Adua, who were detained for allegedly having been involved in a planned coup d'état. We met General Abacha at 02.00 hrs (2 a.m.) at his offices. Having heard us out, he told us that he would reflect on what we had said and would respond to us before we left Nigeria. A day or so later, then Chief of Defence Staff and effective Deputy to Abacha, Lt Gen Oladipo Diya, invited us to lunch. During this lunch he gave us General Abacha's response to the issues we had raised. This response was that with regard to the matter of Ken Saro-Wiwa and his co-accused, Gen Abacha could not intervene to stop a legal judicial process which involved murder charges. However, if the accused were to be found guilty and sentenced to death, he would use his prerogative as Head of State to reprieve the accused so that they would not be executed. Gen Diya also reported that Gen Abacha had said that there was a military tribunal which was considering the matter relating to Generals Obasanjo and Yar’Adua. It was necessary that he should allow the tribunal to complete its work. His view was that the tribunal would recommend the release of the two Generals, failing which he would again intervene to release them. After asking Gen Diya to convey our thanks to Gen Abacha for the commitments he had made, we suggested to him that it would be best that the Nigerian Government makes the necessary announcements when the time came, rather than that we should do this. Diya agreed to this and said that Gen Abacha would issue the necessary orders at the appropriate moments. Our delegation still had a small challenge to address. We had travelled from South Africa with a journalist. Treated by our Nigerian hosts as a member of our delegation, she was present at the lunch where Gen Diya gave us Gen Abacha's response. She therefore had a real "scoop"! Together with her we agreed that if she were to publish what we had been told by Gen Diya, the likelihood was that not only would the Nigerians deny the story, but this would also inevitably condemn Ken Saro-Wiwa and others and Generals Obasanjo and Yar’Adua to death. A principled person, she kept her word not to publish her "scoop", convinced as all us were that Gen Abacha had made a commitment to President Mandela and South Africa which he would honour. It was with this knowledge that President Mandela left South Africa to attend the New Zealand CHOGM meeting. When Ken Saro-Wiwa and others were executed, President Mandela was truly surprised and genuinely outraged that Gen Abacha could evidently so easily betray his solemn undertaking in this regard." http://www.tori.ng/news/64117/photo-of-sani-abacha-bola-ahmed-tinubu-and-mko-abi.html

Infections picked up in the hospital can be serious, even life-threatening. But patients and their visitors can help prevent the spread of dangerous germs by keeping their hands clean, health care professionals say. The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists recommends the following five tips for all hospital patients and their visitors: 1. Don't touch your face, eyes, nose, mouth or any open cuts or wounds after touching anything in the hospital room , such as bed rails, tables, doorknobs, TV remotes or the phone. 2. Sanitize your cell phone before using it in the hospital. 3. Wash your hands with soap or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer before holding the hand of a patient or loved one. This can help reduce -- but not eliminate -- germs such as C. difficile , which can cause diarrhea. 4. Avoid eating with unclean hands. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises patients and visitors to wash their hands before eating or preparing food. It's also important to sanitize your hands before and after changing bandages, using the restroom, blowing your nose or touching any surfaces. 5. Remind health-care providers to wash or sanitize their hands before performing a physical exam. We all know about the issue of female reproductive dysfunction, but most of us are unaware of the male aspect , which occurs as men grow older. Menopause continues to be a problem in the adult male . If you are suffering from decreased sex drive or inability to sustain erection then you may be suffering from male menopause, otherwise called Andropause. The word is formed by combining two Greek words – andro ( male) and pause ( stop) . You thought that menopause was something women went through when they reached the age of 50 , didn’ t you? Well, men go through it too. But , unlike the female menopause , andropause affects the male sexual function . Other symptoms of andropause are erectile dysfunction, decreased libido , depression , irritability , tiredness , loss of muscle size and strength, osteoporosis and increase in body weight , lack of concentration , memory loss and difficulty in sleeping. The good news is that this condition can be slowed down by the way we eat , what we eat and our lifestyle. Foods that cause allergies , stress the stomach or the adrenaline gland are crucial to the development of andropause . The condition may also be accelerated by stress on the gallbladder which is also known as the ‘ unsung body hero ’ Men suffering from andropause may well feel that their manliness has indeed stopped or declined . Although medical practitioners have studied the condition since the 1940 s, it is still the subject of a controversy . Many men still deny its existence . However , it is becoming widely accepted in the scientific world as something that happens to men as they grow older. It is described by Jed Diamond , a California psychotherapist and author of Male Menopause as “puberty in reverse ”. Like puberty , he noted, andropause wreaks “hormonal , psychological , interpersonal , social , sexual and spiritual changes in aging men just as puberty does for teenage youths” . According to researchers in the Department of Urology , Queens University , Kingston General Hospital, Ontario , Canada, andropause happens to one in 200 Canadian men . A study conducted in 2003 by Dr . A . Festus and others of the Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile- Ife , Nigeria , found that 44 per cent of men aged between 30 and 70 suffer from erectile dysfunction. Eight per cent of the cases was severe and 36 per cent moderate. Needless to say, the researchers found that the incidence of erectile dysfunction increased as men got older from 38 . 5 per cent for men aged between 31 and 40 years to 64 per cent for the older age group of 61 - 79 years. Most significantly, the researchers found that most men deny the existence of andropause . About 39 per cent regard andropause as a myth , while another 24 per cent attribute it to various non - scientific causes which they usually blame on their wives. They, therefore , use this excuse to look for younger partners, only to discover that the problem has not gone away . Such men may stop looking for younger partners, but the denial of its existence and not realising that andropause has a medical foundation stops men from seeking appropriate medical help . The condition is due to changing hormone levels in men , which progressively decline with age . It is also characterised by loss of testosterone , the hormone that makes men act like men . Most men’ s testosterone levels drop as they age . However , some men are affected more than the others . The rate of decline varies from individual to individual . The loss of testosterone , which can happen to men as young as 35 years, is gradual with testosterone levels dropping by one per cent to 1 .55 per cent annually , starting from the age of 30 . Testosterone levels drop by about 10 per cent every 10 years. At the same time , another hormone in the body called Sex Binding Hormone Globulin or SBHG traps much of the testosterone that is still circulating around the system and makes it unavailable to the body ’ s tissues to make them function properly . The testosterone that is remaining to assist the tissues to function as they should is called “bio- available testosterone levels. ” Every man experiences a decline of bio- available testosterone , but some men ’s levels dip lower than others . It is estimated that 30 per cent of men in their 50 s will have testosterone levels low enough to cause andropause symptoms . Testosterone is one of the hormones forming the androgen panel or male hormones. According to World Health Organisation , total androgen levels, not just testosterone also affect male andropause as these hormones decline as men age . The WHO study found that androgen levels of men aged 70 were only 10 per cent of that of men of 25 years . For this reason, some have tagged the condition as ADAM (Androgen Deficiency of the Aging Male ). Unlike women , men do not have a clear - cut signpost, such as the stopping of menstruation to tell them they are in andropause . Instead , it comes as a gradual and distressful decline in their sexuality, overall energy with increasing moodiness . By the time most men have reached middle - age , they have experienced some symptoms of andropause . The bodily changes occur gradually in men and may be accompanied by changes in attitudes , moods, fatigue and a loss of energy , sex drive, and physical agility . Muscle mass and bone density decreases and, just like women , men are prone to broken bones and osteoporosis . Prof. Oladapo Ashiru http://punchng.com/men-also-suffer-menopause-1/ |

The Economic and F i n a n c i a l C r i m e s Commission has again arraigned a former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Patrick Akpobolokemi, on 13 counts of alleged N754.7m theft. Akpobolokemi was arraigned alongside six others on Monday before Justice Raliat Adebiyi of a Lagos State High Court in Igbosere. The fresh charge marked LD/2181C/15 bordering on stealing and forgery was the fifth that the EFCC would be filing against Akpobolokemi between December 3, 2015 and Monday. Akpobolokemi had first been arraigned alongside nine others on 30 counts of alleged N3.4bn fraud before Justice Saliu Saidu of a Federal High Court in Lagos on December 3, 2015. He was again arraigned on December 4, 2015 along with five others on 22 counts of alleged N2.6bn fraud before Justice Ibrahim Buba also of the same court. There is a pending 40 counts of alleged N34bn fraud against him before Justice Buba, where he is expected to take his plea on February 8, alongside a former Niger Delta militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo and eight others. Last Friday, the EFCC filed another 22 counts of alleged N22.7bn fraud against Akpobolokemi, Tompolo and 11 others. In the new 13 counts before Justice Adebiyi, Akpobolokemi was charged alongside six others. His co-accused, with whom he was arraigned on Monday, are Ezekiel Agaba, Ekene Nwakuche, Governor Juan, Vincent Udoye, Adegboyega Olopoenia and Gama Marine Nigeria Limited. Among other things, the EFCC alleged that the accused fraudulently converted to their personal use a sum of N346,844,680 released to them by NIMASA for the implementation of Voluntary International Maritime Organisation Member State Audit Scheme (VIMSAS). http://www.punchng.com/efcc-arraigns-ex-nimasa-boss-akpobolokemi-on-fifth-charge-2/sdcard |
About two weeks after Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court, Lagos, issued a bench warrant for the arrest of former Niger Delta militant, Government Ekpemupolo (a.k.a Tompolo), the police have yet to get the order from the bailiff. The Force Public Relations Officer, Olabisi Kolawole told our correspondent on Monday that the police had yet to arrest Tompolo because they have not been served the court order. “We have not received the court order on Tompolo till now and that is why we have not effected his arrest,” she explained. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had charged Tompolo and a former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Patrick Akpobolokemi, alongside eight others for N34bn fraud. Following his failure to appear in court on January 14, 2015, the presiding judge ordered the arrest of the ex- militant leader to answer the 30 counts of alleged N34bn fraud. The judge issued a bench warrant against Tompolo and ordered that he must be produced in court on February 8, 2016 “by all means to answer the charges.” Justice Buba had earlier in chambers made an order compelling Tompolo to unconditionally appear before him to answer to the charges. But while all the other accused, including Akpobolokemi who came on crutches, were in court with their lawyers, Tompolo was absent and did not send a representative. When the matter was called, the EFCC prosecutor, Festus Keyamo, informed the court that despite the fact that the summons was issued in Lagos, the EFCC successfully pasted it on the wall of the 1, Chief Agbanu DDPA Extension, Warri, Delta State’s house of the ex-warlord. He furnished the court with a photographic evidence of the pasting of the summons, noting that despite the summons being served on Tompolo as directed by the judge, the accused did not appear in court. Keyamo applied for a warrant of arrest for Tompolo, pursuant to Section 131 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015. At least 26 people were killed Monday in three suicide
attacks in the far north of Cameroon, a region often
targeted by Nigeria’s Boko Haram Islamist group,
according to a police toll.
The attacks targeted the local market in Bodo, near the
frontier with Nigeria in one of the deadliest incidents to
hit the region.
“An initial toll shows 29 dead and around 30 injured, “a
police source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told
AFP , saying the toll included the three suicide bombers.
Since 2013, nearly 1,200 people have died in Boko
Haram attacks in Cameroon’s far north, according to a
toll given this month by Communications Minister Issa
Chiroma Bakary.
Up until then, when Cameroon bolstered its military
presence along the border with Nigeria, Boko Haram
fighters had slipped back and forth across the frontier,
often using the remote north of Cameroon as a rear base
and acquiring arms, vehicles and supplies there.
Cameroon since has ordered its army to go on the
offensive, joining troops from Nigeria, Niger, Chad and
Benin in a regional coalition against Boko Haram.
The region was attacked just last week, when four
worshippers were killed in a suicide bombing at a village
mosque.
The Nigeria-based jihadists have killed at least 17,000
people and made more than 2.6 million others homeless
since their six-year campaign began.

The Nigerian Army has absolved the Chief of Army
Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, of any involvement in
the ongoing investigation into the $2.1bn arms probe.
The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col.
Sani Usman, condemned the call by a group known as
the Save the Nation Group to include the COAS in
the list of those being probed in connection with current
investigation into arms procured under the
Administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.
Usman said that the group was on a mission to tarnish
the good reputation reputation of the COAS.
The Acting Army Spokesman described those behind the
Save the Nation Group as a band of blackmailers and
mischief makers carrying out an orchestrated campaign of
calumny.
He said the group’s claim that Buratai was Director of
Procurement at the Defence Headquarters from 2012 to
2015 was incorrect as the COAS was only there from
2014 to 2015.
“The Nigerian Army has noted with dismay the attempt
to rubbish the hard earned name and reputation of the
Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf
Buratai and the Nigerian Army by a faceless group that
called itself “Save the Nation Movement” through
orchestrated campaign of calumny in the media.
“In a release signed by Steven Chilaka, its “National
Secretary” on Sunday, they wanted the Chief of Army
Staff to be included among those indicted in the ongoing
probe of abuse of funds meant for the procurement of
arms simply because he was the Director of
Procurement at the Defence Headquarters.
“The public will recall our earlier warning of this type of
campaign of calumny against the Nigerian Army and the
Chief of Army Staff. This has again reared its ugly
head.
“Unfortunately, the movement could not get their facts
right as has always been the case with people with
dubious intents. Contrary to their mischief, it should be
noted that General Buratai was Director of
Procurement at Defence Headquarters from March
2014 to May 2015, not from 2012 to 2015 as they wished
to mislead the public.”
Usman said procurement in the Defence sector was
decentralised with each of the three services responsible
for its own procurement.
He said the COAS had never been involved in any
questionable act throughout his career in the military.
Usman said Buratai had been a reference point in
exemplary conduct, probity and accountability in the
service.
He said a Presidential panel was already investigating
the issue of arms procurement which should be allowed
to do its job.
He said Buratai had voluntary declared his assets as a
mark of his integrity and had also directed all officers of
the Army to do so.

The Lagos State Government on Sunday said the state
police command had arrested seven suspected cult
members, who engaged in a supremacy battle in the
Bariga area of the state.
The clash, which occurred on Saturday, led to the
killing of a 65-year-old woman.
The deceased, Adejoke Adefuye, was burnt to death
after her house on 19, Oshinfolarin Street, Bariga, was
set ablaze by the rampaging cults.
It was gathered that trouble started when members of
Eiye Confraternity, led by one Ibrahim Balogun,
engaged another rival cult, Aiye Confraternity, led by a
man identified simply as Gideon, in a supremacy fight in
the area.
The two grougs were said to have vandalised some
vehicles parked by the roadside in the area, while two
members of the Aiye Confraternity — Abiye and
Daniel — lost their lives in the clash.
A statement on Sunday quoted the Police Public
Relations Officer in the state, Dolapo Badmus, as
confirming the arrest of the cultists, as well as the
seizure of some of the weapons used during the bloody
clash.
The statement read in part, “Badmus said the second in
command of one of the groups was among those arrested,
while three power bikes, live and expended cartridges,
and a tricycle, popularly known as keke Marwa, used
to get to the scene, were confiscated.
“The PPRO said the cult members have been
terrorising the area for some days, adding that the police
were able to make some arrests due to the quick
response to distress calls received concerning the clash.
“Those arrested, according to Badmus, are Afees
Fagunwa, Nurudeen Lateef, Richard Ewa, Richard
Abayomi, Mohammed Musa, Kayode Dada and Adams
Adelakun.”
The statement said the remains of the deceased had been
deposited at the Gbagada General Hospital for autopsy
by the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit,
while other occupants of the burnt building who sustained
minor injuries were treated by the Lagos State
Ambulance Services.
Badmus was quoted as stating that further investigation
into the matter had been transferred to the State
Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba.
