Literature / "Why You Need The Right Team; A Case Study Of Ben Carson. By Chisom Okaro" by somto7(m): 12:44pm On Jan 30, 2019
It is a popular expression that what ever a mind conceives, it can achieve. This expression is entirely true because what ever invention, discoveries and system we live in; was first conceived in the mind before it was actualized.
Neurologists till date, still believes that human beings make use of less than 5% of their brain power in their lifetime. Isn’t this a funny data? That is to say that great minds like Isaac Newton, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein and other great inventors whose works greatly shaped humanity, didn’t even utilize up to 5% of their brain power.

This begs the question. What is the full capacity of the brain?
Well, I guess nobody really knows. It leaves me with this conclusion that the human brain is in fact a miracle.
While we always motivate ourselves with the expression “what ever a mind conceives, it can achieve”; which is very true. There is one important factor we often do not recognize; a key ingredient that backs the above statement in quotes.
The need to have a right team: A team that shares a common goal with you; a team that will be instrumental to actualizing that which your brain has conceived.
That is why so many have mind blowing ideas but fail to realize them, either because they wanted to do it alone or they had the wrong team. These popular quotes; “No Man Is An Island,” “If You Want To Go Fast, Go Alone But If You Want To Go Far, HAVE THE RIGHT PEOPLE.” These quotes portray how interwoven we all are with each other.

Sadly, we have been bitterly divided along racial, tribal and religious lines. But it still does not rule out the fact that great minds that effected great change in our society had a team behind them.
Your team starts with your immediate family, it could be a church group, friends, mentors, teachers; they all come in different forms but share a common goal, to actualize what you carry in your mind.

In this article, I will be examining the life of Dr Ben Carson, how mind power worked for him and the teams he had at every point in his life.

THE LIFE OF DR BEN CARSON:
Growing up with the kind of background Benjamin Carson had, he would be termed a disadvantaged child; at least that was what the society saw him as. A child who struggled with his grades in school, that failure seemed normal to him. Society had sentenced him and him being a struggling child, he also sentenced himself.
Know this: if the society sentences you a failure, it is not a problem. The real problem is when you sentence yourself.
In his early life, the first team Ben had was his mother; Sonya Carson. Note that Sonya Carson never had a formal education. She lived in foster care homes, got married at the age of 13 to an already married man with kids; unknowingly to her. Their life was characterized by struggles, which was typical of black families at the time.

Despite what we would term disadvantaged situation, Sonya Carson against all hope, never stopped believing and went the extra mile to see that her son possessed all that that is needed to rise beyond their present situation. She was resilient in making sure this was realized, even when it wasn’t sufficient to sustain them both comfortably.
For a woman who couldn’t read, she made Ben and his brother Curtix cut down on hours spent watching the Television and made them go to the library and read two books every week, which they would write a report on and present to her. This was a team member who believed in the potentials of her young sons.
Soon Ben's grade started to improve in school, he went from having F’s to D’s and eventually became an ‘A’ student. One would ask how Sonya Carson managed to push Ben to start realizing his potentials. Sonya Carson might not have a formal education but she was a keen observer.
While working as a cleaner for a white man who happened to be learned, she discovered he had a lot of books in his home. The man read more and didn’t watch the TV much. So she concluded that successful people do not watch the TV often and in some cases, not at all.
That was the first step she took with her sons!
As a mother she didn’t just identify that Ben had potentials; she became his team, his support system to make sure these potentials aren’t buried but blossom someday.

So many individuals we classify as failures aren’t entirely so, the seed was in them but the right team wasn’t there to help them actualize their potentials. We all need a support system to function at optimum capacity.
Where did the team of Ben and his mum get him?
Firstly, it got him a scholarship to Yale University; to study medicine. Then he finished from Yale and got an internship at Johns Hopkins.
Mind you, Johns Hopkins selects two interns every year but Ben's confidence got him a spot.

THEN THE MIRACULOUS!
Another part of Ben’s life I will be looking at is the ground breaking separation of the Siamese twins (twins joined at birth). Ben had been outstanding at Johns Hopkins which earned him accolades. But the peak of his career was the case of the Siamese twins, being just 3 years in practice. Similar surgeries in the past had seen just one of the twins survive. But Ben was determined to keep the two alive. He knew it was possible; he just needed to stretch his mind.
His first team member, his Mum; always told him that all he needed, was inside of him. Eventually the idea came. At that time, it hadn't been tested but he was confident of a successful outcome.

The two notable things are: that he had a way out and secondly he needed the right team of doctors to work with in other to achieve this. He assembled a group of doctors of different specialties, practiced the procedures over and over before the day of the surgery. This brings us to: HAVING THE RIGHT TEAM!
He demonstrated that though you are a guru in a field, nothing beats adequate preparation as well as the right team.
The separation of the Siamese twins was successful largely because he had the right team, whose goal aligned with that of Ben Carson.

In conclusion, I will say that having an idea is superb, but you need to get the right team or support systems. Everybody needs one!

Always remember, “Where There Is a Will, There Is A Way...but you must HAVE THE RIGHT TEAM also”.

ONITSHA, ANAMBRA STATE... EASTERN NIGERIA,WEST AFRICA

It was a beautiful sight. Not that it was something new to her but the superb feeling she was having seemed to rejuvenate everything around her. The gliding of the vehicles on the tarred roads and the way the drivers communicated with the honk of their horns was beautiful to her. Nothing was out of the ordinary, she knew that but when the eagerness and anxiety were finally over, nothing less was expected of her. It was already official.
Iretikan turned to Beluolisa and smiled. She was now an Onochie.

 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Immediately the women saw Ifeatu approaching, they knew that something was definitely up. The chatterings ended and they prepped themselves for that which she had come to relay.  Ifeatu approached them smiling and adjusting her wrapper which had seen better days

"I got word. They are almost home"
The women gave out different screams of joy and one of them started a song and they all joined the chorus. They sang and danced their way into the compound. The excitement was truly eminent.
Akukalia stormed out of the house with a sour look on her face.

"What is this nonsensical display for?" She barked her eyes rolling with anger

Igoring her demeanor, Ifeatu replied smiling  "Aku, we are here to welcome our new wife into the family just like it was done for each and everyone of us. You should join us, your daughter-in-law will soon be here"

"I forbid you from involving me in whatever curse you are all heaping on yourselves. As far as I am concerned no marriage ceremony took place in this family today so take your dirges to somewhere else. The day is too young for this child's play"

The women went into a fit of inaudible murmuring and snapping of fingers.

"But... I... I.. I We_we are supposed to......."

"There are enough lands to dig your graves in this community. I'm rather baffled by your decision to do that in my compound. Listen women of Onitsha-Ado, the last time i checked i never invited any of you to any marriage feast..so why would you come to trouble my peace...I need you all to get out of this compound or this town will still tell the tale of what happened here even when our graves must have fertilized a million plants"

The women cursed under their breaths and snapped their fingers as they made their way out of the compound.

"Good riddance" Akukalia cursed .
She was about to go back into the house when she heard the sound of a vehicle entering the compound.
Ikennaya stepped down first followed by Beluolisa and then Iretikan.

"Where are the women?" Ikennaya asked after greeting his mother.

Akukalia ignored both his question and Iretikan's greeting rather she turned to Beluolisa and gave him a roguish smile "Welcome Beluolisa....How was your journey?"

"Smooth...mother. Why are the women peeking from the road instead of being here for the traditional welcome of the new bride"

Still with her roguish smile "Oh they have no reason to be here son. The vestige of the wisdom of our mothers before us, still lives in them"

"What are you talking about mother?"

"Good day, nné" Iretikan greeted again after being ignored for a long time.

"I heard you the first time ...Whoever taught you how to say nne should have also taught you to postrate before saying ututu óma nné to me. You can't be what you are not"

"Mother!" Beluolisa bellowed angrily "Irekitan was only trying.."

"Ohhh.. Ire nkita... Is that her name?"

"He said Iretikan" Ikennaya said and Akukalia hushed him with the raise of her hand.

"Daughter, did your teacher teach you the meaning of Ire nkita in our dialect?.... Definitely not. So if u wouldn't mind, i was conversing with my son before you rudely interrupted"

"Mother what is this all about?..I jukwara ya ma ó ga a la mmiri (did you ask her if she'd care for water) before bringing this up...it was a long journey" Beluolisa said

Akukalia smiled "The journey you've started is far more longer and deeper than that which you've undergone"

"You don't have to link everything to our heritage mother, can't i do something normal for once.. I'm a grown man!"

"You are an Onochie!!!..Beluolisa... and Onochies don't lead a normal life!!" The fire in her eyes was blazing hot "You are the first son of your father not by birth but by circumstance and you are very much aware of what I mean. Akunnaya's death has long lost his grip on you i can see.. Did you even tell our beloved Ire nkita that you lied to your umunna... The lady i want to marry is from Umuoji, you said..Osun is the new umuoji i see"

"Mother.." He warned

"Yes son.. You are an Onochie...Onochies live by tradition.. And intermarriage?" She laughed

The initial enthusiasm that overwhelmed Iretikan was long gone. She was trying hard to fight back her tears. Beluolisa looked at her and anger enveloped him. Deep down he knew he could have easily averted all these but how could he spend the rest of his life without Iretikan. All these went through his mind as he unconsciously clenched his jaw and his hand curled into a fist.

Akukalia looked at him and smiled "You can neither fight me or your chi.. Mmadu ana agba chi ya mgba? (does anyone wrestle his god?)..It is a Friday don't forget to go and pay homage to Eruru. She is merciful, I might overlook but she might not. Isi kote ebu ogba chasie ya (proverb: you bear the consequences of your action). You may leave now Eze-Erulu"...........................

Port Harcourt, Rivers state...South South Nigeria...West Africa

11:48pm GMT, 2020

It was one of those nights that seemed like every creature ceased to exist. The silence, the serenity and the blast of chilled air from the vents of the split unit air conditioner combined forces to send Beluolisa and his wife Iretikan to the deepest part of nature's most priced gift.

Beluolisa snorted and turned to the other side of the bed , his heavy arm landing on Iretikan's stomach. Simultaneously, Iretikan winced in pain and Beluolisa's Cell phone buzzed loudly. He jumped up quickly, murmuring inaudibly while rubbing the sleep off his eyes to get a clearer vision. It was a foreign caller ID.
"By this wee hour" he grumbled to himself before clicking on answer "Hello?"
"Hello sir!" A young female voice came almost immediately. "This is Joan.. Am I speaking with Mr Onochie?" The difficulty in pronouncing the name was worsened by the fact that she was panting.
Beluolisa hesitated a little before replying with his heavily accented English "Eh..ehhe? I am Mr Beluolisa Onochie. What can I do you for?.. Ehh.. Jane.."
"Joan sir" She cut in "I am the president of the Delta Nu sorority house of the Notre Dame College, New Orleans. Your daughter, Tiwa is one of the pledge sisters here"
"Ehe?... She's my daughter like you said. I should know better "Beluolisa was getting impatient
"Sir, there's a big problem...right here. Ti.. Ti... Tiwa collapsed a few minutes ago and she's not showing any sign of breathing"
Joan waited for a sharp reaction but there was none.
"Sir, did you hear me...? "
"I heard you clearly "Beluolisa shouted angrily. "The time in New Orleans should be around.. "He checked his wall clock "...04:52pm in New Orleans. For your information it is 11:52pm here in Nigeria..and it is way too late to be playing such stupid game....and I, Beluolisa Ugonnaya Onochie is the last person you should play such games with. Kpachalu anya gi (Be careful)"
"Sir.. Sir... "

He ended the call angrily and tossed his phone on the pillow, cursing loudly.
"What is it?" Iretikan asked
"Untrained stupid white girls. Playing games with Beluolisa...The way the whites train their children ehh.."He shook his head angrily and adjusted himself on the bed.
"What exactly did they say?"
"Woman go to be... "
He was interrupted by the sound of the phone again. He checked and it was the same number. He ended the call angrily again.
"ókó mi" She called in her native language. "Why not hear them out?"
"Something must be wrong with your brain"
"I..."Her phone started ringing
"Don't you dare take that....."

But she had already answered "Hello?" She listened" The dean?"
She sat up properly, staring at her husband in askance. "My daughter....Tiwa? "
Beluolisa snatched the phone from her and ended the call.
"Iretikan I want to sleep"
"You should have allowed me.. that was the dean, something is definitely wrong"
"Ndi ara" His phone rang again.. "Kee ifem ji isi kote!" (What have i done?)

He checked the caller ID. It was his brother.
He answered "Ikennaya?"
"Beluolisa did you get a call from Tiwa's school?" His well polished accent was a sharp contrast from Beluolisa's.
"Ohh.. The idiots called you too"
"I'm on my way from work en route the sorority house now. I'm almost there"
"Ikennaya madness doesn't run in our lineage"
"Something is definitely up Olisa. The school authority can't be involved in such prank"

"Let me know when you're done wasting your time "Beluolisa ended the call.
Few minutes later there was still no call from Ikennaya. Reluctantly, Beluolisa called him back. Ikennaya picked at the third ring.
"Hello Olisa" He shouted hyperventilating, Beluolisa could hear the chaos going on at the background.

Expressionless he asked "Ogini...What is going on there?"
"Olisa it is true. Tiwa has been confirmed dead by the medical team here. Her body is about to be deposited at the morgue"
Beluolisa's heart beat increased almost immediately "You saw her.... Yourself? "
"I confirmed Olisa... I identified the body myself"
"What is wrong?"Iretikan asked alarmed
"Shut up "Beluolisa barked" Ikennaya there's a big problem"
"I know Olisa.. We.."
"No, you don't understand Ikennaya. You are telling me a different thing all together"
"Why are you sounding like this? Tiwa is my family too.. "

"Far from that, Ikennaya. My daughter flew in from New Orleans last night"
Ikennaya took a minute to take it in "What?"
"Yea. My daughter flew in from New Orleans, last night. As we speak now, Tiwa is currently in her room, in my house" He took the words one after the other.
There was silence. The heart of both men were pounding heavily against their chests.
In Tiwa's bedroom, she sat on her bed staring into space, in the dark of the night.

Nairaland / General / "BRAVE HEART, To Everyone Fighting Depression, written by Chisom Okaro" by somto7(m): 1:37pm On Jan 04, 2019
To you my fellow comrade,
I bring you this epistle, because we all are together in this struggle.

I am aware there are days you feel like calling it a quit,
But where is the beauty in it all if we don't see it to the end.

Days you don't feel like getting out of bed,
Of what use are the beautiful lenses the creator have blessed you with to behold the wonders of creation.

I know there are days you feel the whole world and it's occupants are pressing the life out of you,
The strength you need is sitting right withing you.

Those days the thought of ending the journey keeps playing like a music box in your head,
Just before you think of dancing to the tune of the song.

I want you to remember these amazing people;
Your spouse who loves you
Your kids who are always elated at the sound of your voice
Your Father/Mother/Siblings who draw strength from you
I, your comrade, your fellow SEAL in this OPS
Our community.

So before you do the Zanku dance to that song coming from the music box,
I need you to consider how many more you are taking to that dance.

My comrade,
Let us keep the fight going
Together let's swim that ocean
Let's cover each other behind enemy line

Ever feel alone on this mission?
Remember my rifle gives you cover
Comrade, stay tight mate
Reinforcement is almost here

I borrow these lines from a fellow comrade (M.I)
Even Brave Heart had a late start
Even the great artiste make fake art
Until they realise who they are

Comrade,
Please press on with your fellow comrades
There is strength in numbers
No matter how dark it is now
No matter how lost we all are
We will realise who we are

Talk to me mate
My ears are here to listen
I'd cry with you
I'd smile with you
I'd cross the enemy line with you
Let's see this through comrade

Stay strong Brave Heart!!

Sports / Serena Williams And Roger Federer To Face Each Other On New Year's Day by somto7(m): 8:22pm On Dec 31, 2018
In a career span of over 20 years Serena Williams and Roger Federer have never faced each other in a competitive game.

The two tennis legends have won 43 grand slam singles titles between them and are considered by many to be the greatest of all time.

But in careers lasting over 20 years Roger Federer and Serena Williams have never faced each other in a competitive match, until their eagerly anticipated New Year's Day clash at the Hopman Cup in Perth.

The greats will oppose each other in a mixed doubles match where Williams will pair with US teammate Frances Tiafoe, with Federer partnering Belinda Bencic. According to Serena, she said she has been looking forward to sharing the court with Federer and described the feeling as "cool".

Williams is warming up for next month's Australian Open where she is hoping to equal Margaret Court's all-time grand slam titles record of 24.

Federer said he is looking forward to what some commentators are describing as the "Battle of the Sexes", a reference to the famous 1973 clash between Billie-Jean King and former Wimbledon champion Bobby Riggs. Hype maybe, but Federer is intrigued to be finally facing up to his fellow 37-year-old, the pair having been at the top of the tennis tree since the early part of the century. He said he admired her efforts on and off the pitch and often thought what it will feel like to return the serve and go head to head with her.

Nairaland / General / "Africa's Contribution To Civilization; Now A Shadow Of Itself, by Chisom Okaro" by somto7(m): 12:38pm On Dec 31, 2018
When you speak of civilization, African civilization has always been a fascinating one, it played a huge roll in setting the pace. So many empires sprang up in Africa with their unique inventions, and strategy which a had a huge impact on civilization. The oldest university located in Morocco, Egyptian civilization, D’mt and Axum kingdoms of Ethiopia, Ghanaian empire, Mali empire all had a remarkable way of life, which some of it were adopted by westerners that sojourned in Africa. There were unique trade strategy and organised military force which sustained the people. There will carefully thought policies that guided commerce at that time. Of all the civilizations that Of Egypt and interestingly the first and oldest university in the world located in Morocco is the most striking of them all.
In this article we will be looking at the oldest university and Egyptian civilization.

University of Karueein
University of Karueein is the oldest existing and continually operating educational institution in the world located in Fez, Morocco. It was founded by Fatima Al-fihri  in 859 AD. She established the university with the inheritance she got from her father, Mohammed Al-fihri  who was a wealthy merchant.
The university gained patronage of wealthy and politically powerful sultans. The university library had large selection of manuscripts. Among the subjects taught, alongside the Qur ‘an and Fiqh  (Islamic jurisprudence) are grammar, rhetoric,  logic, medicine, mathematics, astronomy.

Egyptian civilization
Civilization wouldn't be complete without mentioning the Egyptian civilization. The success of ancient Egyptian civilization is partly as a result of their ability to adapt to the condition of the Nile river valley for Agriculture. In this era Egyptian civilisation witnessed quarrying, Surveying,  and construction techniques that supported the building of monumental pyramids, temples and obelisks. They had a unique system of mathematics,  a practical and effective system of medicine, irrigation systems and Agricultural production techniques, the first Known planked boat, glass technology and various forms of literature. It’s art and architecture were widely copied.

With all of these early achievements, the question begs, why have Africa become the exact opposite of what it used to be, a continent that pioneered some aspect of civilization. Carefully examining Africa, it has a great human capital and natural resources.
Sadly, the immense natural resources became our problem and human capital poorly developed. We keep loosing great minds to the west while we remain underdeveloped. A continent marred by self gratification,  mismanagement and bad leadership.

In my opinion, we can still take our rightful place in the league of continents, with adequate planning and unflinching commitment to the cause.
