Politics › Northern Elders To Jonathan: Get Ready For A Unified North In 2015 by soochukwu(op): 9:13pm On Mar 30, 2013
Please people does this statement sound like an elderly statement?i keep wondering why are our elders and some people in nigeria mentally backward?why can`t we copy from democracies that have succeeded, must the president come from any particular region of nigeria, and these people will brag to be educated individuals,so were is the impact of their education in their reasoning?some are even professors and doctors. The Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF) has sounded a warning to President Goodluck Jonathan, telling him that he would have to contend with a unified north should he insist on seeking another term in 2015.NEF spokesman, Prof Ango Abdullahi, gave this warning yesterday in Kaduna during an exclusive interview with our correspondent.
Commenting on why the north is putting its act together in order to present a formidable team, Abdullahi said, “We are trying now to unify our people (northerners) that have been divided along ethnic and religious lines in the last two years.
And very soon you will hear the north talking from one platform.
“President Jonathan should just be ready to either park out or jump out of Aso Rock. He should be ready to fight a unified north in 2015.”
He further expressed the group’s belief that the insurgency in the north was being fuelled as a strategy to stigmatise the region.
“From all indications, the president has already stigmatised some parts of the country as being Boko Haram, and that everything about the violence in the north must be Boko Haram, but we know that the original Boko Haram by Mohammed Yusuf is not solely responsible for all the bombings that have been taking place.
“The Boko Haram syndrome may be a strategic plan to portray the north as morally unfit to rule; it is also a strategic plan to divide the country along north and south, or along religious and ethnic lines,” he said, adding that those behind such evil act would regret their actions in due time.
Abdullahi, a former vice chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zarai, further claimed that President Jonathan was always known as somebody who likes to take sides.
According to him, “Jonathan is only a theoretical president of Nigeria; but, practically, he has demonstrated that he is a president of a section of the country. He has always spoken in defence of his Niger Delta people. He is always fond of exonerating his people.
“You can see a president exonerating a criminal such as the October 1 bombings in 2010. He has also come out to say that Boko Haram has infiltrated his government, and that Boko Haram members are in his government, the Army, the Police and even in the Villa. This we know is a strategy to stigmatise any candidate from the north come 2015.”
On whether Jonathan should contest the 2015 presidential election, Abdullahi said, “Whether Jonathan is free to contest the 2015 election or not is the business of Bamagan Tukur; all we are hoping is that he is not speaking on behalf of the people of the north.
“If Bamagan Tukur is familiar with the history of zoning by his party since 1999, one would be surprised that Bamagan Tukur, who comes from this part of the country, is talking about Jonathan contesting election in 2015. But then, that is the business of the PDP.
The people of north would certainly take a decision to bring a consensus candidate come 2015.”
He further argued that the region should be allowed to conclude its eight years and anything short of that would not be acceptable.
“The north gave former President Olusegun Obasanjo his full eight years; it is only normal that the north should be allowed to conclude our eight years, started by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua,” he said.
On Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu’s insistence that President Jonathan had signed a one-term agreement, Abdullahi said that the governor’s revelation may be have emanated from the pressure being mounted on the governors by the northerners.
“Thank God, Babangida has revealed that there was a pact between the governors and Jonathan that they would support him in 2011 election on condition that he will only do one term.
It is now time for other northern governors to follow suit because there will be more pressure from northerners. They have to come together and listen to the voice of the people,” he added.

Sports › Fifa Corrupt?sold Mou Votes. by soochukwu(op): 2:32pm On Mar 30, 2013
The Football Federation of Macedonia (FFM) has admitted that it made a "technical error" after confirming Goran Pandev voted for Jose Mourinho to be crowned the 2012 Fifa Coach of the Year.

The Real Madrid boss recently revealed that he did not attend the gala dinner to announce the recipient of the award due to irregularities in determining the winner, with Vicente del Bosque pipping the Portuguese to the prize.

Pandev then fuelled further talk of a possible fix when he claimed to have voted for Mourinho, only for his selection to go down as another pick for the Spain boss, with Macedonia now admitting to an error on their part.

"When it came to the ballot paper, we contacted Pandev and he verbally expressed his preferences to us - he voted Mourinho as the best coach and gave him five points," read a statement released by the FFM.

"When completing the slip, with no intention of changing Pandev's vote, the box for Del Bosque had been ticked off and the fax was sent to Fifa a day later. It was a technical error."

Regardless of the FFM's error, the Spain coach still won 34.51 per cent of the final vote - a clear 14% ahead of Mourinho.Goal.com

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been cleared to face Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals after an appeal to have his two-game ban reduced was upheld by Uefa.

The former AC Milan striker was sent off in the dying minutes of Paris Saint-Germain's 2-1 victory over Valencia in the first leg of their last 16 tie, and was subsequently handed a two-match suspension.

Sports › Bernard Hopkins At 48 The Oldest Boxing Champion In History. by soochukwu(op): 3:04pm On Mar 12, 2013
NEW YORK -- Add another name to Bernard Hopkins' list of victims.

Hopkins became the oldest boxer to win a major title on Saturday night, scoring a 12-round unanimous decision over Tavoris Cloud to claim the IBF light heavyweight championship.

"It feels good. It feels real good," Hopkins said. "I'm going to Junior's (Restaurant and) I'm going to have cheesecake."

Rafael: Hopkins Still Ruler Of Roost
Bernard Hopkins proved he's still a master craftsman in another age-defying, record-breaking performance, Dan Rafael writes. Story

The 48-year-old Hopkins broke the record he set by beating Jean Pascal for the WBC light heavyweight title on May 21, 2011. When asked which fight meant more, Hopkins said "tonight was better. Because I'm older. (It's) more gratifying.

"Tonight was one of the bigger fights (in my career)."

And while he reveled in what he accomplished, he was looking toward the future. Hopkins, who was adamant that he will not fight past 50, laid a challenge at the feet of the 175-pound and 168-pound divisions.

"I'm motivated to do it," Hopkins said. "I don't believe anybody in the 175(-pound) weight class and possibly the 168(-pound) class can beat me."

Hopkins, fighting his 19th title bout, improved to 53-6-2 in the main event of an eight-fight card at the Barclays Center. The 30-year-old Cloud fell to 19-1.

"It was great to break (in) the Barclays Center with a (legendary) performance," Hopkins said.

SportsNation: Should B-Hop keep fighting?
After beating Tavoris Cloud for the IBF light heavyweight belt, 48-year-old Bernard Hopkins joked that he could box at 50. Should he keep fighting or walk away on top?
• Vote!

With Hopkins forcing a patient, technical match, Cloud was unable to press the issue and Hopkins circled him, landing jabs to his face, eventually opening a cut above his left eye.

"I have to throw a lot of substance (into fights). I'm fighting old school in a new world. (I) have to learn to adapt to what (the judges) are looking for," Hopkins said. "We knew a 30-year-old guy was not going to run from a 48-year-old guy."

Hopkins connected on 169 of 417 punches. Cloud landed 139 of 650.

"I was only average tonight," Cloud said. "He hit me with an elbow but I'm not complaining. It is what it is."

Keith Thurman won the WBO intercontinental welterweight title with a 12-round, unanimous decision over Jan Zaveck. Thurman improved to 20-0 and Zaveck fell to 32-3.

Ed Mulholland/USA TODAY Sports
After winning the IBF light heavyweight title at age 48, Bernard Hopkins said he planned to celebrate by "going to have cheesecake."
Thurman and Paulie Malignaggi engaged in a shouting match after Thurman challenged the WBA welterweight champion to a title fight during the post-fight news conference.

"(There is a) lot of action in the welterweight division," Thurman said before focusing on Malignaggi, sitting in the back of the room. "You better not duck me, son."

Malignaggi fired back, saying "Bring that money. It's prize fighting, dummy. I'm ducking you because you don't bring (any) money."

Michael Perez (18-1-2) and Lonnie Smith (14-4-3) fought to a majority draw in the first bout on the main card. The bout was called midway through the seventh round after Perez absorbed what was ruled "an accidental head butt" that led to blood running down both sides of his face.

Judges Julie Lederman and Carlos Ortiz both had the fight 66-66, while Perez led 67-65 on Joe Pasquale's card.

"The guy kept head-butting me from the first round on. In the first round, he nailed me in the left eye. Fourth round, he cut me up here above my right eye. In the sixth, he got me in my temple," Perez said. "To me, it's all about points and not rushing forward. It's about getting in clean shots and getting points. I'm going to take a little break and rest my body and recuperate and the get back in there."

Steve Bujaj (9-0), Claude Staten Jr. (1-0), Frank Galarza (9-0-1), Marcus Browne (3-0) and Eddie Gomez (13-0) won undercard fights. The announced attendance was 12,293.

And Joan Rivers has something to say about it. Lol. An 8 year old schoolboy, Sanele Masilela, married 61 year-old married mother of five, Helen Shabangu, over the weekend, because the ghost of his dead ancestor told him to and his family, fearing divine retribution, organized a quick wedding.

Defending the wedding, Sanele's family said it's not legally binding, it was just a ritual. They didn't sign a marriage certificate and won't live together. Sanele's 46yr old mum, Patience Masilela said:
'This is the first time this has happened in the family. Sanele is named after his grandfather, who never had a white wedding before he died so asked Sanele to get married. He chose Helen because he loves her. By doing this we made the ancestors happy. If we hadn't done what my son had asked then something bad would have happened in the family. I didn't have a problem with it because I know it's what the ancestors wanted and it would make them happy.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › I Will Wait Till The End Of The Season Before Laughing At Abramovich – Villas-bo by soochukwu(op): 9:59pm On Mar 10, 2013
Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas insists he must wait until the end of the season before he can react to his sacking by Roman Abramovich, with Spurs sitting above Chelsea in the Premier League after going 12 games unbeaten.

The 35-year-old coach was sacked by the Blues’ owner less than a year into his contract in 2012 after struggling to build a consistent run of results and experiencing problems with a number of senior players.

Villas-Boas’ current side can move five points ahead of their neighbours with a win over Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, and the manager feels Spurs are now strong enough to hold on after the pain of missing out on the Champions League last season.

“We won’t know that until the end of the season,” the Portuguese told reporters when asked if Spurs’ 12-game unbeaten run proved anything to Abramovich. “I won’t be egocentric now – we must wait.

“Even if we have a setback I think we are able to bounce back. The players are really up for it after what they suffered last season.”

Tottenham have had a hectic schedule after beating Inter 3-0 in the Europa League on Thursday night and overcoming Arsenal 2-1 last Sunday, but Villas-Boas suggests their fine run of form will serve as a boost to the players.

“Liverpool wanted to win [the Europa League] too,” he continued. “I am sure Brendan [Rodgers] would still prefer to be in it. Legs can be a little bit tired but we can respond as we have in the past after the Europa League.

“Most of the players now look at each other with pride. That makes a difference because all of them see that we’re going in the same direction towards achieving success.”

Foreign Affairs › Berlusconi Sentenced To One Year Jail Term. by soochukwu(op): 12:36pm On Mar 07, 2013
(Reuters) - An Italian court on Thursday sentenced former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi to a one-year jail term for making public the taped contents of a confidential phone call in a case related to a 2005 banking scandal.

The sentence, which was read in court by the judge, came as Berlusconi is facing two other trials for alleged tax fraud and paying for sex with an underage prostitute.

Prosecutors in the wiretap case had asked for a one-year jail term for the media tycoon.

Berlusconi, who has denied any wrongdoing, can seek to have the decision overturned before a court of appeal.

Under Italian law, he is not expected to serve any prison term until all possible appeal trials have been carried out.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Sir Alex Ferguson: Irreplaceable Mourinho Could Stay At Real Madrid by soochukwu(op): 5:46pm On Mar 03, 2013
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes Jose Mourinho could shock everybody and stay at Real Madrid beyond this summer, despite the Liga champions' struggles this season.

The Portuguese boss led Los Blancos to the title last year, but they currently trail bitter rivals Barcelona by 13 points, and 'The Special One' is facing speculation over his long-term future, with a potential return to Chelsea on the cards.

Yet although many assume this will be the last season at the Bernabeu for Mourinho, the Red Devils' boss - who will face his old adversary in the Champions League on Tuesday - doubts whether the 50-year-old will leave.

"You see all these things on Mourinho but he's got two years left on his contract," Sir Alex told reporters. "Everyone assumes he'll leave but I heard that last year, too. I'm not certain he'll leave.

"Maybe it's possible because there's no smoke without fire and I'm sure that clubs would love to take him. He's given me no indication. I don't know how they can replace someone like him, anyway. I think he's done a great job there.

"A reasonable assessment of his time at Real Madrid has got to be countered with how good Barcelona have been. They've been an exceptional team.

"Would you really want to let a good coach like that go? I don't think [Real Madrid president Florentino] Perez would want that. So what you are reading about Chelsea and all the rest - I just think it would be difficult for Jose to leave Real Madrid because he's at the top."

While Sir Alex feels Mourinho could stay with Real, he admits a lot could rest on whether the Spanish giants progress past his own side in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.

"I wouldn't know how they'd react to going out," he continued. "They have that Spanish mentality and have changed their manager that many times over the years. For Jose and for Perez and the supporters, the European Cup is going to be really important for them this season, there’s no doubt about that."
