Health / 7 Tips For Men Having Sleeping Problems by Sparklettunes1: 3:15pm On May 05, 2018
Counting sheep is no longer working for you as you lay restless in bed trying desperately to sleep. Men and women will endure different issues that make it hard for them to catch some shuteye. Finding the answers to the problem will often require taking a step back and assessing all the present difficulties to figure out the best remedy. For men having sleep issues, below are seven tips that can be of help.

Ditch Oversleeping
Stay up late, and you will feel the need to overcompensate during the day, and this affects your sleep-wake cycle. Those naps you catch during the day will only screw with your regular sleep cycle come night time. So, stay up until its bedtime when you are feeling sleepy; do not go to bed too early or too late.

Sex
After a romp in the sack, men will quickly head to slumberland while women will want a bit of cuddling or chat. Sex is an energy demanding and equally relaxing activity. The body releases endorphins during the act and the trigger a sense of calmness and peace which aid in natural sleep.

Mind Games
Ever heard of “learned insomnia?” It is a real thing, brought about by worrying too much about sleep to a point where it affects your physical process of sleeping. Avoid overthinking about it or forcing yourself to bed; instead, take deep relaxing breaths and clear your mind when in bed and you will not even notice when you fall asleep.

Indulge In Some Carbs and Protein
If you had dinner and your stomach is rumbling before bedtime, consider taking carbs and protein foods about an hour before bed. Research shows that these trigger the brain to produce serotonin, a chemical that has calming effects on the body and mind.

Prep For Sleep
Our busy work life routines tend to be demanding to the point where we stress over what needs to be done the next day even when it has not arrived. As much as you plan and prepare for your day, remember to do the same for your bedtime. Establishing a bedtime routine is vital to working in your best capacities during the day. Allocate enough time and a simple bedtime prep schedule where you pick out next day’s outfit, pack your bags, brush your teeth and catch a relaxing bath before bed. In bed, read a relaxing book or have a session therapeutic session of deep breathing.

Avoid These
Some men will testify to sleeping better thanks to alcohol, TV or playing music, but these will have an adverse impact sooner than later. The bedroom is your go-to-place for sex and sleep, period! Any of the other sideshows do little to help you sleep. You risk developing a dependency on these things, which is not healthy for natural sleep.

Bedroom Comforts
If you are thinking of doing some meaningful upgrades in your home, then give ample considerations to the place where you rest and have sex. It should be as comfortable as possible. Invest in quality pillows and a costco mattress and consider changing these after ever nine or so years of use. The mattress should have a firm but soft build that supports your weight and contours. Also, invest in a calming décor theme; from the color of the walls to the window drapes, the flooring, and lighting.

John Asiemo a.k.a Daddy Showkey, Ajegunle Lagos State-born musician, on Sunday, visited the quadruplets of  Mr. and Mrs. Peter Ejiofor, born on Dec. 28, 2017, urging women to have faith in God.

Ejiofor, a staff of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), and his wife were finally blessed with four healthy baby boys after seven years of marriage.

Showkey, who arrived at the couple’s humble home at Gowon Estate, FHA, Egbeda, Lagos, met the quadruplets and described them as bundles of joy from God to the family and Nigerians as a whole.

“I’m here to felicitate with your family on the birth of your boys. The arrival of these boys will turn things around for good in your home.

“I pray for all that God will grant all the women who are seeking the fruit of the womb their prayers. They shall all have their own children as He did it for the Ejiofors, Amen,’’ Showkey prayed.

Continuing, the ‘galala’ exponent urged the father and wife to take very good care of the boys.

“As you can see, these boys have decided to come at the same time because they are special children. They have come to compensate you for the years of waiting, so, my prayers for you is that you will not suffer to take care of them.

“The boys will grow up to be good children and they will, in turn, take care of you in your old age. You and your wife will eat the fruit of your labour on them in Jesus Name, Amen.”

Earlier, Mr. Mike Mbonye, Director and Head of Lagos Operations, News Agency of Nigeria, who welcomed the artiste on behalf of the couple, praised Showkey for his exploits in the music world.

Mbonye said that Showkey’s visit to the Ejiofor family at a time like this was a testimony to his humanitarian lifestyle and urged him to continue with his good works.

Dr. Chibuzo Abonyin, a lecturer at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, who was in attendance also extolled the virtues of Showkey.

“As we congratulate our friend and his wife on the successful delivery of their boys, we are glad to have Daddy Showkey in our neighborhood.

“I commend Showkey for his exemplary life,” Dr. Abonyi added.

Meanwhile, Ejiofor and his wife, Anastecia, who are still marvelled at God’s miracle in their life, expressed deep appreciation to Showkey for coming to associate with them and wished him well in his career.

Another influential colleague of Ejiofor, Edwin Nwachukwu, who is also of NAN and Tunde Oyedele, Managing Editor of eyeonthenews.com were also at the event.

Politics / 246.4m meals served to nigerian pupils By Buhari Govt by Sparklettunes1: 7:35am On Feb 04, 2018
@Peachessence

The Buhari administration has served no fewer than 246.4 million meals to primary school pupils across 20 states under the National Home Grown School Feeding Programme (NHGSFP).

Mr. Laolu Akande, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Vice President gave the update on Saturday and explained that the figure represented the meals served since December 2016.
According to him, meals served will reach 313,928,420 by the last week of February 2018. as 6,044,625 pupils in 33,981 public primary schools are fed.

Akande noted that more states were expected to be added to the programme this year as the NHGSFP plans to implement feeding in a total of 28 States.

He said the programme will soon link farmers to school feeding markets.

According to Akande, several milestones have been recorded by the Buhari administration’s National Social Investment Programmes (NSIP) in 2017 in line with its inclusive growth plan.

The plan includes tackling poverty, hunger, and creating jobs for Nigerians.

“About 40,000 direct jobs have since been created from the School Feeding Programme across the participating states,’’ he said.

The states covered by the NHGSFP programme now includes Anambra, Enugu, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ebonyi, Zamfara, Delta, Abia, Benue, Plateau, Bauchi, Taraba, Kaduna, Akwa-Ibom, Cross River, Imo, Jigawa, Niger, and Kano.

In 2017, the feeding programme collaborated with the Federal Ministry of Health to deliver an integrated deworming programme for pupils in all public primary schools classes 1 to 6 across 17 states.

The programme has also created a social media-based quality assurance tracking system, #TrackWithUs.

The tracking would ensure that required standards for the menu for pupils and meal distribution were adhered to across the states in a transparent manner.
On the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT), Akande said that it has so far recorded over 280,000 beneficiaries in 21 states, while about 300,000 Government Enterprise Empowerment Programme (GEEP) micro-credit, interest-free loans were disbursed.

“In the same vein, in 2017, the N-power scheme, which is targeted at providing jobs for unemployed young graduates, started its physical verification process for the 2017 applicants.

“In 2018, more beneficiaries are expected to be added to about 200,000 young graduates currently employed under the scheme.

“A total of N900 billion was appropriated for the SIPs in 2016 and 2017; with N500 billion appropriated for 2016 and N400 billion appropriated for 2017.

Celebrities / Drama In Late OJB Jezreel Residence Over His N50million Property by Sparklettunes1: 8:28pm On Feb 02, 2018
There are indications that the family of late singer and music producer, OJB Jezreel, is at war over the deceased’s property in Surulere, Lagos.

The deceased’s N50m property which is located on Gbaja street, Surulere, Lagos, has been causing a lot of ripples recently.

However, contrary to online reports that the aged father of late OJB, Pa Anthony Okungbowa wants his son’s first wife, Mabel Okungbowa to vacate the house with her kids.

LIB reports that the man, who is over 90 years old and currently resides in his hometown Agbor, Delta State has nothing to do with it.

However, a close source revealed that it is the late singer’s elder brothers that are behind the issue.
‘It is OJB’s elder brothers that are behind this whole issue. Especially his immediate elder brother, Tony Okungbowa’ a high place source.

LIB paid a visit to the home and a caveat that reads: “This House is Not for Sale” has been written on the gate of the house, a four-bedroom bungalow, a duplex and a shop.

A residence on the street who asked not to be named told us that, ‘I know the day they came to write this thing, na OJB brother send boys to come write and they almost fought with his wife, maybe because she didn’t want them to write it’.

Another source confirmed to us that ‘OJB foresaw this kind of troubles after his death and that was why he had concluded to sell the property himself before he died but the Monday morning that the buyer was supposed to come and pay Fifty Million Naira for the house was the day he died’.

An exclusive report by Thenetng dated June 14, 2016, partly reads, ‘OJB had finalised plans to sell his Surulere residence for N50m today to a commercial bank (name withheld).. As a matter of fact, he would have sold the house about three weeks back but a document was missing. Now we have the document and they were supposed to come and make the payment at 4pm today but Baba don die’.

OJB passed away on June 14, 2016, following a prolonged battle with kidney ailment just a few days before his 50th birthday.

Crime / Reps Demand Names Of Nigerians Unlawfully Detained By Police by Sparklettunes1: 10:27pm On Feb 01, 2018
The House of Representatives Committee on Human Rights on Thursday, February 1, 2018, mandated the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to furnish it with the list of Nigerians unlawfully detained by the police.

The Committee also urged the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to tame the rising incidences of human trafficking across the shores of Nigeria.

Chairman of the Committee, Rep. Edward Pwajok (Plateau-APC) gave the charge when the two agencies appeared before members of the committee to defend their 2018 budget proposals.

The lawmaker also emphasized the need for the NHRC to push for the domestication of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act in all the states of the federation.

Responding to the demands of the agencies for an increased budgetary allocation, Pwajok said that it was necessary to heed the call to enable NHRC to discharge its responsibilities effectively.

“From our interactions with both agencies, we are satisfied with their performances in 2017. The problem they have is the challenges of inadequate funding.

“They have so much work to do, but if they do not have the money, they cannot discharge their responsibilities.

“But to the extent of the money that was released to them, they were able to discharge their responsibilities.

“But we are going to make a case for an upward review of the money that should go to particularly the Human Rights Commission; they have requested for more funds that was allocated in 2018 budget.

“They have a lot of work to do and issues of human rights are on the front burner of international discourse.

“We discovered that the international community has given our Nigerian Human Rights Commission category A status, that means we are doing our best to make sure that we respect human rights in Nigeria.

“If they are not properly funded, then we may go to Category B or C and that will have serious implications.

“Recently, the US government approved the sale of fighter jets to Nigeria; it means that they are satisfied with our respect for human rights.

“The agency should submit the list within one week. It is an issue of writing to the force headquarters.

“It shouldn’t take them too long; I expect an immediate response because there are crime records in all police stations in Nigeria.

“There are people who are arrested and kept beyond the constitutional timeline. That way, the police would be kept in their toes.

“They would know that people are also watching. You don’t detain Nigerians unduly,’’ Pwajok said.

Earlier, the acting Executive Secretary, NHRC, Mrs Oti Ovurawa  requested for funds for effective delivery.

She said that N6.8billion budgeted for 2018 would not be sufficient.

According to her, some of the projects to be executed by the commission in 2018 will include upgrading of facilities in the headquarters, zonal offices, upgrading of the ICT centres and purchase of utility vehicles.

Others are publicity of the commission’s activities, public enlightenment campaigns against the abuse of human rights as well as establishment of centres for missing persons.

She also disclosed plans by the commission to establish a human rights funds to carter for the needs of victims of unlawful detentions, domestic violence, and training for personnel.

Politics / Fani-kayode Slams Out Punch Newspaper For Reporting He Has ‘A Heart Disease’ by Sparklettunes1: 9:36pm On Feb 01, 2018
Femi Fani-Kayode, former minister of aviation, has slammed the Punch Newspaper for reporting that he has a heart disease.

While describing the report as false, the former minister said what he had was a “heart-related ailment,” and not a “heart disease,” saying there is a world of difference between the two.

FFK as he is fondly called made this clarification in a statement signed by his senior special assistant on public affairs, Obiageli Nwachukwu, and sent to us on Wednesday, January 31, 2018.

He also said that he will be presenting a medical report to the court at a later date.

“It has been brought to our attention that the Punch Newspaper of 31st January 2018 has reported, in a blazing and sensational headline, that the former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, “has heart disease”. This is false.

“It is only in the world of the reporter of the Punch Newspaper that a “heart-related ailment” has suddenly become “heart disease,” the statement partly read.

Mr. Fani-Kayode, who was absent in court, and Nenadi Usman, a former minister of state for finance, are facing a 17-count of money laundering amounting to N4.6 billion.

Also joined as a defendant is Yusuf Danjuma, a former National Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) and Jointrust Dimensions Nigeria Limited.

When the case was called, only Usman and Danjuma stepped into the dock.

Before lawyers announced their appearances, Justice Rilwan asked why Fani-Kayode was not present.

Kayode’s lawyer Mr. Norrison Quakers (SAN) told Justice Rilwan Aikawa that the former minister complained about “heart-related ailment” and could not make it to court for his trial.

The courtroom then broke into a suppressed laughter after he made the complaint insisting that the former minister’s illness should be taken seriously due to recent cases of heart-related deaths.

“It is not a laughing matter.

“They said he was complaining of a heart-related pain. We have seen recent cases of heart-related deaths. On Friday, a lawyer collapsed and died while addressing the court,” Mr. Quakers, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, said, as his colleagues and their clients struggled to hush their laugh.

He continued, “The second defendant is unusually absent in court today as a result of a health challenge which information was relayed to me by the wife.

“In that regard, I have requested for a medical report and hoping that same will get to me before the close of work because the second defendant lives and carries out his business outside the jurisdiction of this court, in Abuja.

“My humble application is for us to come back tomorrow so I can furnish the court with the medical report,” Quakers said.

The former minister’s absence stalled his trial for an alleged money laundering.

Rotimi Oyedepo, counsel to the EFCC, did not oppose the application.

But he reminded the court of the provisions of Section 396(d) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act which stipulates that both the prosecution and defence are entitled to not more than five adjournments each during a trial.

“They have taken two now,” Mr. Oyedepo added.

Oyedepo’s position also forced FFK to insist that this was the first and only time he has been absent from proceedings or asked for an adjournment from the learned judge.

Politics / FG Orders Tinubu And Atiku’s Company To Pay $48 Million by Sparklettunes1: 9:22pm On Feb 01, 2018
The face-off between the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, and Intels Nigeria Limited,Intel, a company co-owned by Atiku Abubakar, former vice president, is not over yet.

This is as the NPA has handed a two-week ultimatum to the company to remit an outstanding $48 million that ought to have been paid into the agency’s Treasury Single Account, TSA, in 2017.

Intels, a logistics and facilities services provider in the maritime and oil and gas sectors, was co-founded by Gabriele Volpi, an Italian national, and former vice-president, Atiku Abubakar.

Atiku has since sold down most of his interest in the company to the former Lagos State governor and APC national leader Bola Tinubu.

Speaking yesterday during an interview with CNBC Africa, Managing Director of NPA, Ms. Hadiza Bala Usman, said Intels’ notice of termination would stand if the company fails to settle its debt.

“I am giving Intels a possible two-week window to provide payment, two weeks from now, following which the notice of termination will not be withdrawn,” she said.

“One of the issues we have had with Intels is their non-compliance with the TSA. As you are aware, the Nigerian government instituted the treasury single account which is the account that all revenues of government need to be paid into.

“Intels collects revenue on behalf of the Nigeria Ports Authority and had refused to comply with TSA and kept retaining those revenues in their coffers.

“So we insisted that they must comply, no company is above the laws of the country and we went through the whole process,” she was quoted to have said in the interview.

She spoke further on what caused the disagreement between the maritime agency and the logistics firm, accusing the company of failing to comply with the ground rules.

“I think it’s important for all entities operating in an environment to adhere to the rules and regulations,” she said.

“What we seek to ensure is with you have a level playing field and you must comply with regulations. At no point was Nigeria Ports Authority not going to remit their own portion of the revenues.

“All other third-party agreements that we have in the Nigerian Ports Authority have a similar structure, so why should Intels feel it can operate outside of the law? The other companies are complying, why don’t you comply?” She added.

Last year, Nigerian government directed the NPA to terminate the boat pilotage monitoring and supervision agreement that the agency has with Intels Nigeria Limited.

Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mallam Abubakar Malami (SAN), in a letter dated September 27, 2017 Ms. Hadiza Bala-Usman, said that the agreement, which has allowed Intels to receive revenue on behalf of NPA for 17 years, violates the Nigerian Constitution, especially in view of the implementation of the TSA.

Malami said the agreement, which allowed Intels to receive revenue on behalf of NPA for 17 years, violated Sections 80(1) and 162(1) and (10) of the constitution.

The AGF wondered if the management of the NPA and Intels did not take cognisance of the relevant provisions when negotiating the agreement in 2010.

But Intels insisted that it had settled the dispute with NPA and was awaiting the AGF’s clearance.

The firm admitted the infractions and apologised for its initial rejection of the regulator’s directive on the TSA, stating its readiness to comply.

In its apology, dated October 25, 2017, Intels, through one of its directors, Silvano Bellinato, suggested that an agreement that would ensure “mutual business satisfaction” be signed between the company and NPA.

Bellinato also sought assurances that Intels’ share of collected revenues would always be remitted to it in good time after the TSA account with the CBN is credited.

Crime / Cameroonian Soldiers Intrudes Cross River Community by Sparklettunes1: 11:08am On Jan 31, 2018
Cameroonian soldiers have invaded Nigerian communities in Cross River State, the second time in two months.

The soldiers had reportedly killed a Nigerian and a Cameroonian refugee in Danare, Boki Local Government Area (LGA) of the state in December, last year.

The incident followed a military crackdown on Anglophone secessionists in the neighbouring nation, resulting in displaced persons streaming into Nigerian territory.

Sources at Danare said the soldiers stormed the community on Thursday, demanding that the village head hand over some refugees to them. The leader turned down the request and the troops left without hurting anybody.

On Monday night, however, the soldiers returned. Numbering between 50 and 100, they allegedly crossed the international border into Danare, searching for Cameroonian militants said to have sought refuge in Nigeria. The militants had allegedly attacked the soldiers, prompting the reprisal.

The Spokesman for the community and a former councilor in Boki LGA, Mr. Douglas Ogar, flanked by some indigenes, yesterday, told newsmen in Calabar that the soldiers invaded the village at about 2:00 a.m. on Monday, shooting intermittently.

He said: “Our people did not sleep, yesterday (Monday), because gendarmes from Cameroon invaded our community, claiming they were looking for Ambazonian militants. The militants, who have since taken refuge in the surrounding forests, were also shooting. The entire community was in chaos.

“It is important to recall the sad invasion of Danare communities, which happened on January 25 this year, when more than 80 Cameroonian soldiers with various weapons crossed the Danare-Daddi/Danare-Bodam international border openings and abducted five natives.”

Ogar said the situation posed a serious danger to the safety of refugees and the entire Boki communities.

According to him, the soldiers said their mission was to warn the residents of Danare to be aware they would return and stage a raid intended to cleanse the communities of all threats to the Cameroonian government.

“This is a calculated offensive from the Cameroonian military on Nigeria. They have shown outright defiance of Nigeria’s territorial sovereignty and despised the consequences of crossing the international boundary to carry out intimidations and harassment on the already alarmed citizens of Danare, with warnings of further assault.”

Commenting on the latest invasion, the Cross River State Security Adviser, Mr. Jude Ngaji, said: “The issue has gone beyond the police. The Nigerian army has just deployed a battalion in the area. No Nigerian has been killed. And as you know, this is an international issue which is being handled at the highest level of government.”
The United Nations High Commissioner For Refugees (UNHCR), meanwhile, has said an estimated 36,000 persons from Cameroon have fled into Nigerian communities.

But reacting to the alleged invasion, the spokesman for 13 Amphibious Brigade Calabar, Captain Kayode Owolabi, said: “There is nothing like that. Actually, they may come to their own side and not (the) Nigerian side.”

When asked, however, to comment on photographs the people in Danare had taken of the Cameroonian troops and of their meeting with the community, Owolabi said: “I saw the pictures that Cameroonian soldiers entered our territory. But actually, our men are there. But the network to reach them is the problem. But as soon as I get the information, I will send it to you.”

Politics / Lai Mohammed Budgets N6.8bn For Information Ministry In 2018 by Sparklettunes1: 11:08pm On Jan 30, 2018
The Ministry of Information and Culture said it had proposed N6.8 billion for its activities in 2018.  Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, made this known while defending the ministry’s budget before a member of House of Representatives Committee on Information on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said N880 million was earmarked for overhead and N1.30 billion for capital expenditure of the information arm of the ministry.

Mohammed said that N3.2 billion was appropriated for personnel cost during the period. He said that in 2017, a total of N1.8 billion was appropriated for the ministry, but he could not provide a breakdown of the budget performance to the dissatisfaction of the lawmakers.

The committee demanded that a detailed breakdown of the 2017 budget, including releases and performance, should be provided before further deliberations on the 2018 budget at a later date.

Earlier, Chairman of the committee, Rep. Odebunmi Olusegun (Oyo-PDP) had recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari, in obedience to the Constitution, presented the 2018 budget to the National Assembly on Nov. 7, 2017.

He said that in line with the Constitution, the assembly was committed to ensuring a people-oriented budget that would meet their yearning and aspirations. The legislator said that the agencies under the ministry were meant to be on top of their games in ensuring proper and timely dissemination of information as regards government activities.

He said that lack of enough funding was hampering the performance of the agencies, making them “live on past glory’’. Olusegun said that during the committee’s 2017 budget performance oversight function, it was discovered that most agencies were operating with obsolete equipment.

He, however, said that the manner available funds were managed required proper scrutiny to ensure transparency and accountability.

Education / Just 99% Of Tertiary Institutions Met Up January 25 Admission Deadline – JAMB by Sparklettunes1: 11:59am On Jan 30, 2018
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, on Monday that the level of compliance by tertiary institutions to its January 25 admission deadline was 99 percent.

JAMB said one percent of the nation’s tertiary institutions did not meet the deadline even as it did not state the reasons the tertiary institutions adduced for not meeting up.

JAMB’s Head of Media, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, responding to Vanguard’ telephone inquiry, said while 99 percent of the nation’s tertiary institutions were able to comply with its January 25 deadline, some others which he said, were in the one percent bracket, could not meet up.

He, however, could not give the names of those that complied as well as institutions that couldn’t meet up just as he did not disclose whether any sanction awaits the institutions that failed to meet up with the deadline.

“So far, we have received 99 percent compliance from tertiary institutions. One percent of the tertiary institutions were unable to meet up”, he said. Recall that the board, on Thursday last week, directed all tertiary institutions to end their 2017 admission by January 25.

Dr. Benjamin, who conveyed the position of the tertiary institution's admission examination body to the institutions during interview with journalists in Abuja, said the board’s decision came after a meeting where all issues and ones bordering on the admission process were taken into consideration.

He said it was resolved that the academic calendar must be adhered to. According to him, the directive became necessary as the board intended to meet up with the academic calendar as earlier agreed.

“By implication, candidates who have gained admissions into various institutions and are yet to register or do not have admissions by January 25 should begin to make preparations for the 2018 UTME, “he had said.

Politics / We Are Expecting Millions Of People To Join APC – Buhari by Sparklettunes1: 12:43pm On Jan 29, 2018
Muhammadu Buhari, president of Nigeria, has said he is expecting millions of Nigerians to join the ruling All Progressives Congress in the next few months.

He said the defectors would join the party from all parts of the country.
Buhari said this in a letter he sent to Senator Basheer Mohammed who recently defected to the party in Kano. His Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, posted a copy of the letter dated January 25, 2018, and titled “Re: Declaration for APC” on his Twitter handle, @BashirAhmaad.

Buhari’s letter was a response to an earlier one by the senator informing him of his decision to join the ruling party.

The President said he would have loved to attend the reception ceremony organised for the federal lawmaker in Kano but for the 30th African Union Summit he is currently attending in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Buhari’s letter to the senator read, “I was most delighted to receive your letter informing me of your impending decision to formally declare for our great party, APC.

“Furthermore, I am very encouraged to learn that you are bringing thousands of new supporters into the fold.

“We are expecting millions to join us in the next few months from all parts of the country.

“I would have very much welcomed another opportunity to be in Kano but due to a conflict of engagements, I am due on that day in Addis Ababa for an important African Union meeting which was scheduled months ago.

“I hope I shall have the pleasure of welcoming you to the Presidential Villa in the near future. I wish the event turns out to be a resounding success.”

The letter was personally signed by the President.

Politics / 2019 Election: Rigging 2019 Elections Will Mean Doom For Nigeria- Ekweremadu by Sparklettunes1: 10:45pm On Jan 27, 2018
Ike Ekweremadu, Deputy Senate President, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that his administration not only conducts a credible, free and fair general elections in 2019, but also be prepared to accept the outcome of the poll in good faith should he and the ruling All Progressives Congress fail to win the presidential contest.

Ekweremadu, who spoke at the Parliament of the United Kingdom, where he delivered a lecture entitled, “African Politics: The Dynamics and Lessons,” warned that any attempt to manipulate the election would threaten the peace in Nigeria.

A statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Uche Anichukwu, in Abuja on Friday quoted him as saying, “Former President Goodluck Jonathan put Nigeria on the global map as a leading democratic nation when he put in everything to ensure free and fair elections (in 2015), in which he did not only lose the presidential poll as an incumbent but also willingly conceded defeat.

“In fact, he called the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari and congratulated him, even before the announcement of the final results. In addition, neither former President Jonathan nor the Peoples Democratic Party challenged the outcome of the election in court.

“Therefore, to whom much is given much is expected. The onus is now on President Buhari to likewise provide a level playing field and show uncommon statesmanship if he and his party lose the 2019 presidential election. That way, Africa’s biggest democracy will further entrench the culture of peaceful and smooth transfer of power from a ruling party to the opposition in both Nigeria and Africa.

“Any attempt to manipulate the 2019 elections to the advantage of self or party will not augur well for peace and democracy, not only in Nigeria but the entire continent. God forbid!”

The Deputy Senate President added, “Important too, in the present age of technology, I will like to see African countries deploying the latest technology in voter registration, vote counting and announcement of results.

“We must ensure that the process is sufficiently transparent and unarguably so, such that losers will see and be convinced that they lost fairly. That way, election tribunals will be eliminated.”

Ekweremadu decried the sit-tight syndrome in Africa, which he described as a grave danger to Africa’s democracies.

Drawing inspiration from the words of the late former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, he noted that his admonition became necessary owing to the pivotal and strategic roles Nigeria is playing in Africa, stating that for Africa to be respected by the rest of the world, Nigeria must not only lead the way but also earn the respect of the world.

Education / ASUU Reacts To Kogi Govt Recruiting NCE Holders To Replace Sacked Lecturers by Sparklettunes1: 10:28pm On Jan 27, 2018
The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Friday, January 26, 2018 accused the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, of recruiting holders of the Nigeria Certificate in Education to replace about 150 lecturers dismissed from the Kogi State University.

The Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Owerri Zone, Prof. Ike Odimegwu, stated this at a press conference in Awka, Anambra State.

ASUU, Owerri Zone comprises Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Uli; Federal University of Technology, Owerri; Imo State University, Owerri; Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

Odimegwu said the governor’s action was capable of destroying Nigerian university education and ridiculing its certificates in the global community.

Odimegwu said, “This arrogant display of power and abuse of office by Mr. Yahaya Bello speaks volume about the extent to which some political office holders could go to crush perceived opposition to fulfil their ambition towards destroying the public education system.

“After the sacking of over 150 seasoned lecturers, Mr. Bello resorted to the recruitment of unqualified individuals, such as laboratory attendants, members of the National Youth Service Corps, NCE holders and even undergraduate students, to replace them.

“These actions amount to gross violation of International Labour Law, the Constitution of Nigeria and all known best practices in the university system.”

Describing the crisis in the Kogi State University as a recurring incident, Odimegwu alleged that it was caused by inadequate funding and erosion of university autonomy.

He said, “In July 2017, the governor, who is the Visitor to Kogi State University, Anyigba – announced the proscription of all ASUU activities in the university. This was followed by the sacking of over 150 academic staff members, who were on a lawful struggle to press for the payment of the backlog of their salaries running into several months.

“These lawless actions are clear manifestations of arrogance and very high level of ignorance on the side of Mr. Bello vis-a-vis the limits of his power as the state governor and failure of appreciation of the essence of a university.”

Politics / Uninterrupted Power Supply To Be Witnessed By September- Bayelsa State Govt by Sparklettunes1: 10:06pm On Jan 27, 2018
The government, which blamed recent power outage on cable theft and vandalism, also said that all the local government areas in the state had been connected to the national grid.

The Managing Director, Bayelsa Electricity Company, Mr. Olice Kemenanabo, gave the assurance on Friday while showcasing the activities of the Ministry of Power since the inception of the Seriake Dickson’s administration in 2012.

Kemenanabo said efforts were being put in place towards achieving the target, which include upgrading of existing electricity transmission stations from 40 to 90 megawatts as well as ensuring that the second mobile transformer functions optimally.

He said, “We have upgraded the transmission from 40 megawatts to 90 megawatts. We also want to work on the second mobile transformer to make sure that we have a second transmission station that will serve the eastern part of Bayelsa.

“Thereafter, we will then dedicate the supply from the 90MW for the central and western parts of the state. By so doing, the constraints in the sector would be a thing of the past.”

According to him, the mobile transformer will serve as a second transmission station to service the eastern part of the state while the power generated from the 90 megawatts transmission station will be dedicated to cover the central and western parts of Bayelsa.

Kemenanabo also pointed out that the state government had signed an agreement with a private firm in December last year to provide a 5.26 megawatts power plant to boost power supply.

Business / Lekki And Ikoyi Toll Fares To Increase February 1– LCC by Sparklettunes1: 10:55pm On Jan 26, 2018
Lekki Concession Company Limited has announced that it will increase the toll tariffs being charged at the Admiralty Circle Toll Plaza on Lekki-Epe Expressway and the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge Toll Plaza with effect from Thursday, February 1.

The LCC said in a statement that the upward review followed “extensive consultations held with stakeholders in the Eti-Osa/Lekki-Epe Expressway of Lagos State.

Although details of the new rate were not disclosed in the statement, the firm said N100 would be paid by any driver of a mini commuter bus using the Lekki-Epe toll plaza, which is an increase of N20 over the N80 currently being charged.

This, it said, was the agreement it reached with the drivers’ union during the consultations.

It said the toll fare increase was as a result of current economic and business realities that had adversely affected the cost of operations and maintenance of the company’s loan obligations.

The Managing Director, LCC, Mr. Mohammed Hassan, said the feedback and recommendations received during the series of consultations held in December 2017 with stakeholders in Eti-Osa Local Government Area and its environs considerably influenced the new toll fares to be paid by motorists plying the expressway and the Ikoyi Link Bridge.

Hassan said, “Since the commencement of tolling in December 2011, the toll tariffs had remained the same despite the continuous increase in the cost of operations to ensure that the toll plazas and the road infrastructure are well maintained.

“The toll review has also become necessary to enable the company to meet its loan obligations to its local and foreign lenders, considering the fact that foreign exchange rates have continued to increase astronomically in the last couple of years.

“The LCC cannot continue to operate or provide the services required from us if we do not review the toll tariffs.”

Politics / Ex-sgf Lawal Released By EFCC On Administrative Bail by Sparklettunes1: 10:45pm On Jan 26, 2018
A source in the commission told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Lawal was released on administrative bail on Friday evening. The source, however, did not give further details. Lawal was detained by the EFCC on Wednesday morning after he honored an invitation to the commission’s head office in Abuja.

When NAN contacted the Public Relations Officer of the Commission,  Mr. Samin Amaddin on the issue, he said he was not aware. The development followed Lawal’s sack by President Muhammadu Buhari on Oct. 30. Buhari’s action was based on the recommendation of a presidential panel that probed misuse of funds meant for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North East.

The former SGF is accused of using his company Rholavision Engineering Ltd to corner an N200 million contract for the clearing of “evasive plant species’’ in Yobe.

The theme of the event was “A secure business environment for economic development’’.

The minister was represented by the Ministry’s Director of Finance, Mrs Oladudumi Biosola.

Adeosun urged officers of the NCS to put in more efforts to rise above target in revenue drive.

She said that security of trade environment was central for business to prosper, adding that security aspect of Customs role was as important as its revenue role.

“The theme of this year Customs day coincides with the current ease of doing business initiative of the Federal Government.

“We understand that the initiative is already yielding dividends based on the fact that we have improved by 24 points in the World Bank ranking system,’’ Adeosun said.

She commended the NCS for its remarkable success in ensuring national security in the past years.

Science/Technology / Chinese Scientist Breaks Record For Successfully Cloning Monkeys by Sparklettunes1: 7:01pm On Jan 26, 2018
Chinese scientists have successfully cloned two monkeys, breaking a technical barrier that could open the door to copying humans.

The two identical long-tailed macaques, Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua, were born eight and six weeks ago, making them the first primates to be cloned from a non-embryonic cell.
The two newborns are now being bottle fed and are growing normally. The researchers said they expect more macaque clones to be born over the coming months.
The scientists used the same technique that was used in cloning Dolly the sheep two decades ago.

It was achieved through a process called somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), which involves transferring the nucleus of a cell, which includes its DNA, into an egg which has had its nucleus removed.

Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Neuroscience in Shanghai said their work should be a boon to medical research by making it possible to study diseases in populations of genetically uniform monkeys.

This breakthrough also brings the feasibility of cloning humans.

“Humans are primates. So (for) the cloning of primate species, including humans, the technical barrier is now broken,” Muming Poo, who helped supervise the program at the institute, told reporters in a conference call.

“The reason … we broke this barrier is to produce animal models that are useful for medicine, for human health. There is no intention to apply this method to humans.”

Back in 1999, scientists cloned a rhesus monkey named Tetra using a method called embryo-splitting, which is easier to execute than SCNT but cannot generate as many offspring. Until the most recent experiment, however, all attempts to clone primates with SCNT had failed.

Politics / Buhari To Deliver A Speech On Anti-corruption War At AU Summit by Sparklettunes1: 10:57pm On Jan 25, 2018
Muhammadu Buhari, President of Nigeria, will travel to Ethiopia on Friday January 26, 2018, to take part in the 30th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU).

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, disclosed this in a statement he signed on Thursday.

The highlight of the President’s engagements during the visit will be his statement under the historic theme for the AU Summit, “Winning the Fight against Corruption: A Sustainable Path to Africa’s Transformation.”

This is the first time in the 54-year history of the AU that anti-corruption will be made a theme of the gathering of the regional leaders.

On July 4, 2017, African leaders unanimously endorsed President Buhari to champion the fight against corruption on the continent.

The endorsement, which took place during the 29th Session of the AU, was in recognition of his personal commitment and acclaimed anti-graft drive at the domestic level.

The President Buhari had also accepted his nomination on July 25, 2017, in a letter to President Alpha Conde of Guinea, the out-going AU Chairperson.

While thanking his colleagues for the honour, the Nigerian leader reiterated his “commitment to contributing towards our collective efforts to strengthen good governance and development on the continent.”

Apart from anti-corruption, other issues lined for consideration by African leaders and their delegations include peace and security (transnational terrorism); institutional reforms of the continental body; free movement of persons; climate change; trade; aviation; education; gender and development.

On the sidelines of the event, President Buhari would hold bilateral meetings with some of his colleagues on issues of common interests.

He would be accompanied on the trip by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama; Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami; and the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Danbazau.

Others are the Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika; the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno; and Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu.

Crime / Federal Government Gives Approval Of 3 New Police Commands In Oyo by Sparklettunes1: 9:36pm On Jan 25, 2018
The Federal Government has approved three new area commands for the Nigeria Police in Oyo State to complement the existing ones and boost security network.

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abiodun Odude, made the disclosure during a courtesy call on Governor Abiola Ajimobi on Thursday in Ibadan.

The new area commands are located in Eruwa, Iganna and Saki areas of the state.

Odude said that the new commands in Saki would be headed by ACP. Abubakar Baba, Eruwa by ACP. Sola Oketunji, ACP. Dayo Ariyo would be in charge of Iganna Command.

Odude commended the governor for his administration’s continuous support for the state police command, saying that such had assisted the police in maintaining peace, law, and order.

He also thanked the governor and other stakeholders for their combined efforts and cooperation in making policing less cumbersome across the state.

“Oyo State is one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria today and this is not achieved overnight.

“I can easily say it was achieved through continuous support given by the present administration in the state under your able leadership.

“The administration is sparing no expense in providing logistics supports and all other things needed to get the job done and today we are the best for it.

“The people are happy for the reign of peace, which has culminated into good business environment for investors,” he said.

Responding, the governor lauded the Federal Government for acceding to the state’s call for the establishment of more police commands in the state.

Politics / Buhari Values Cattle Than Nigerians- BBOG by Sparklettunes1: 7:10pm On Jan 25, 2018
Members of the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) movement on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, defied the police order and marched from the Unity Fountain and blocked the Ask Rock entrance gate. The protesters demanded an apology from President Mohammadu Buhari over Tuesday’s harassment of their members by security operatives.

The movement said that the manhandling, arrest and detention of its members by the police was unlawful, stressing that no security agency has the right to disrupt any peaceful protest by citizens who are demanding actions on some issues that violate the constitutional rights of citizens.

Maureen Kabrik, one of the leaders of the movement, said the welfare of cattle had taken over the heart of President Muhammadu Buhari, who now “responds more promptly to issues that affect the herdsmen than the human welfare”.

She accessed the President of being insensitive to the huge loss of lives following the herdsmen’s violent campaigns nationwide. Kabrik alleged that the President also “values oil more than human lives, hence he chose to be the Minister of Petroleum Resources,” instead of the Minister of Defence despite the high level of insecurity in the country.

Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili, The Co-convener of the movement, said President Buhari needed to apologise to the group for directing the police to grossly abuse BBOG members who were out on their periodic peaceful protest to raise awareness on the Chibok Girls, the Lassa fever, policewomen and the lecturers of University of Maiduguri who were abducted by Boko Haram in the North-East.

Ezekwesili argued that having gotten a favorable court judgement against the previous government when it tried to ban the BBOG, the police could not be used to disrupt the group’s peaceful demonstration when “the constitution guarantees every citizen the right to hold leaders accountable”.

She said: “The President needs to tell us while our fundamental rights have been abused, because our movement has steadfastly been known as a movement that has never behaved in an unruly manner. We are well organised, disciplined and have never disturbed public peace, so why will the police be sent after the BBOG.

What kind if repressive era we entered into? We will not accept that. The President is the one in control of the police, he needs to say to us that the police harassing us was a big mistake and apologise to us and assure us that it would never happen again. “Having gone to court to challenge the previous administration when it tried to ban our movement and winning in courts, nobody has the right to stop us.

I have also served this nation therefore nobody can shut me down, I will continue to ask for the Chibok Girls.”

In a related development, Concerned Nigerians group and members of Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) otherwise known as the Shiites, also occupied the Unity Fountain in continuation of their protest to demand the release of their leader, Sheikh El-Zakyzaky, his wife and other members of the group still being detained by the Department of the State Services (DSS).

Jobs/Vacancies / 27,000 Teachers Shortlisted For Interview In Kaduna by Sparklettunes1: 12:25pm On Jan 23, 2018
The Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has shortlisted and invited 27,000 applicants out of the 43,000 that applied for a teaching job for an interview on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, Governor Nasir El-Rufai has said.

El-Rufai who spoke through the State Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Jaafaru Sani said that having marked the examination scripts, SUBEB last Saturday sent invitation to the shortlisted applicants.

He added that the board is working hard to ensure that the first batch of teachers who met the required competence, qualification and professional standard are deployed to schools by February 2018.

According to him, 12,000 out of the 21,780 teachers that were disengaged for failing the recent competency test conducted by the state government have re-applied in the ongoing recruitment exercise.

While he noted that disengaged teachers who have put in five to nine years of service would be paid their gratuities, he explained that those who have put in 10years and above would be paid pension.

He also mentioned that the state government is working on improved welfare package for teachers in the state to enhance improved service delivery.

"The state government is committed to reforming the education sector. Public schools will no longer be a dumping ground for people who don't have the requisite knowledge and qualification. The children of the poor deserve a quality education. Therefore, no vested interest would stand between our children and the desire to train them well,"

"The state government did not hold any meeting with neither the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) or the National Union of Teachers (NUT) before the calling off of strike but over 12,000 out of the 21,780 that failed the competency test and were disengaged have reapplied among the 43,000 applicants. The recruitment is a continuous thing and there is an opportunity for any of the disengaged teachers to reapply," he added.

Politics / FG Distribute Motorcycle To Extension Workers by Sparklettunes1: 8:33pm On Jan 20, 2018
The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on Saturday distributed 370 motorcycles to extension agents to further enhance service delivery to Nigerian farmers.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the motorcycles were given to the agents as a soft loan at 50 percent discount.

NAN also reports that the minister, Chief Audu Ogbeh, had earlier commissioned a “National Farmer Help Line (NFHL) Centre”, meant to provide a linkage between extension workers and farmers across Nigeria.

Ogbeh, flagging-off the distribution exercise at the National Agricultural Extension Research and Liaisons Services (NAERLS), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, said the motorcycles were to improve efficiency.

“It is a great privilege for me to launch and flag-off the distribution of these motorcycles to the frontline agricultural extension workers in the Agricultural Development Projects (ADPs) in various states.

“It has become imperative and indeed compelling for Nigeria to diversify its economy, having been virtually dependent on petroleum for four decades.

“The country has realized that the most apparent sector to achieve this is the agriculture sector, which presents the greatest potential for sustainable economic development of Nigeria in terms of resource-based approach to growth,” he said.

Ogbeh said that the country must, therefore, transit from oil-dependency to a more diversified economy, as the domestic economy is always susceptible to external revenue shocks when oil prices fall.

According to him, that informs the imperativeness of the economic diversification from oil as a depleting asset, since the country is too richly endowed with abundant natural assets for it to concentrate on tapping just one.

He said the country needed an economic diversification model that would help absorb fiscal shocks, fend-off monetary instability and provide employment opportunities for the teeming energetic work-force.

The minister said it was in realization of this that President Muhammadu Buhari directed the setting up of four special committees, one of which is on “Revitalisation of Agricultural Extension Services in Nigeria”.

Ogbeh lamented that extension service delivery in the country fell on hard times since the closure of the World Bank loans in early 2000.

“In an effort to re-engineer extension service delivery in the country, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has decided to tackle the issue from the foundation.

“One of such fundamental issues is the provision of mobility to the extension agents in the State’s Agricultural Development Programmes in all states of the federation,” he noted.

The minister said it was necessary to provide the extension agents left in the service of ADPs with the appropriate form of mobility.

He said that over the years, motorcycles have been found to be the most efficient means of mobility for agricultural extension agents.

NAN reports that the minister was in Zaria for an inspection tour of agricultural institutes comprising IAR and NAERLS.

Other research institutes to be visited by the minister are the National Animal Production and Research Institute (NAPRI) as well as Division of Agricultural Colleges (DAC).

In his address, the Director, NAERLS, Prof. Mohammed Othman-Khalid identified some challenges hindering the growth of research to include the untimely release of the money and obsolete research facilities.

He said the institute had trained about 30,000 youths under the N-Power scheme and it aided farmers to source credit facilities worth N100 million in 2016/2017, which was fully repaid.

Earlier, the Director, Extension Services, Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Hajiya Karima Babangida, lamented that the extension worker-farmer ratio stood at 1:10,000 and 1:25,000 in some states.

She said the motorcycle distribution was a demonstration of passion the minister had for extension services.

Babangida said that each ADP would receive 10 motorcycles for onward distribution to extension agents in its state.

She said the ministry would provide facilities in all the zonal centres in the six geo-political zones, to assist farmers through the National Farmer Help Line.

Babangida said the motorcycles distribution was being done in all the six geo-political zones of the country and urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of them to improve productivity.

Education / JAMB Orders All Institutions To End 2017 Admissions January 25 by Sparklettunes1: 10:44pm On Jan 18, 2018
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Thursday directed all tertiary institutions to end their 2017 admission by January 25.

The Board’s Head of Media, Dr Fabian Benjamin said the board’s decision came at a meeting where all issues and ones bordering on the admission process were taken into consideration.

He said it was resolved that the academic calendar must be adhered to.

According to him, the directive becomes necessary as the board intends to meet up with the academic calendar as earlier agreed.

“By implication, candidates who have gained admissions into various institutions and are yet to register or do not have admissions by January 25 should begin to make preparations for the 2018 UTME.

“The public must also note that the UTME results are valid for only one year and not three years as widely speculated.

“If changes are made to the validity, I assure you the board would communicate appropriately to the public.”

The board had recently said that the UTME examinations would take place between March 9 and 17, while the mock exams would take place in the first week of February.

Benjamin also noted that the sale of Direct Entry forms is ongoing while urging candidates who intend to apply to do so immediately as the sale of the DE forms ends on the same date with the UTME’s.

“It has come to our knowledge that a lot of candidates are not aware of the sale of the Direct Entry forms, which we have advertised.

“We are calling on desirous candidates to please register their profile and obtain the pins from the vending platforms.

“Candidates who want to apply to institutions through DE must note that the sale of the forms started the same date as the UTME’s and would end on the same date which is on February 6.

“This form can be obtained through the same process as the UTME forms.

“It could be purchased through vending commercial banks, Mobile Money Operators (MMO’s), Interswitch, NIPOST, and Remita,” he said.

Benjamin, however, noted that candidates should ensure that they disclose at the point of obtaining e-pins the exact pins they are paying for, that is, Direct Entry or UTME as some unknowingly purchase Direct Entry instead of UTME and vice-versa.

Nigeria’s singer, Davido is set for a collaboration with South Africa’s sensational dancer, Zodwa Wabantu, who normally dances on stage, without wearing a pant.

According to reports by Zimbabwe’s Herald, the collaboration between Davido and Zodwa, who is known as Queen of Vosso, is being arranged by Afrotainment boss, DJ Tira.

The report said Davido had sought Tira’s help to get Wabantu to feature in his upcoming music video.

“Hello, @DjTira I wanna ft Zodwa Wabantu on my upcoming music video. How can I get hold of her? “(sic), he tweeted.

No date has been announced yet for the shooting of the video.

According to TimesLive, Zodwa, a Durban-based dancer has been grabbing headlines for her racy outfits and habit of not wearing panties.

“Zodwa is a wonderful person, who is a born entertainer. After we were booked by the same client in the UK, we developed a working relationship where Afrotainment now handles her bookings, which start from R25k. She gets bookings from all over, places like Botswana and Swaziland,” Tira told TimesLive.

The dancer was banned from appearing at the Harare International Carnival in Zimbabwe last year because the organizers wanted her to wear panties.
