Commentor: From Quora:
If a hurricane destroys / damages your house you’re pretty much SOL. After Hurricane Katrina the insurance companies almost universally found reasons to exclude coverage and if they couldn’t exclude coverage they limited coverage. Many people had to sue their insurance companies to get any semblance of coverage. There was little government help either from the state or the feds for the vast majority of people. The state of Louisiana did create the road home program to help people rebuild and with housing costs but I did not qualify. Unfortunately for a lot of recipients the program has sued them to recover costs that the government claims should not have been paid out. After Katrina I spent my own money to repair my house but I did get a little bit of money from my insurance company to replace the fence. Of course they tried to depreciate the fence almost down to zero but fortunately I had receipts from when I had the fence installed two years prior.
Yet another from Quora:
It depends on your insurance. Flood damage is not generally covered by standard home owners and auto policies, but wind damage is, so, after a hurricane, you often see fights between insurers and insurees about whether the damage came from the water or the winder. There are flood and hurricane-specific policies, many of which are provided or subsidized by states that get a lot of hurricanes (or else no one could afford insurance). There are often hurricane relief bills passed after big hurricanes passed by the US Congress, but these deal with immediate necessities and some form of relief. I knew a woman who got $5k from FEMA after a hurricane hit her area and destroyed her home. She gambled it away at the Marriott Casino nearby. She lives with family (much to her son-in-law’s chagrin). While programs like the NFIP exist, they don't guarantee widespread coverage. Many homeowners in flood-prone areas like Texas either aren’t aware of NFIP, can’t afford the premiums, or assume their standard insurance covers flooding which it doesn’t. As a result, a significant number remain uninsured and receive little to no compensation after disasters. So, despite federal options, access and awareness gaps mean many still go uncompensated. That said, at least the U.S. has an insurance system that’s far more functional and accessible than Nigeria’s. |

Commentor: I know you meant insurance but you are wrong.
Many states that endure natural disasters are often avoided by insurance companies.
So, many would get no compensation. While it’s true that some insurance companies may limit coverage in high-risk areas, many homeowners in states like Texas still obtain protection through government-backed programs such as the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Though private insurers may hesitate, federal support helps ensure compensation is available. So, it's not entirely accurate to say most people receive no compensation many do, especially those with proper flood insurance in place. |

One thing I am just loving about it all is that, prior to elections, some people thought they will be excluded from the wrath of Trump, but now, EVERYONE is getting impacted 🤣🤣🤣🤣.
FEMA now useless! Hurricane ravaged areas are helpless
Mass layoffs irrespective of your political beliefs
Big cut to Medicaid, Medicare and Snap benefit in new big bill 🤣🤣🤣
Ministry of education stabbed and handed off to the state, who will now deliver education to the private sector.
Consumer protection gutted! Financial institutions having their best years.

dequir: Lost Lagos with only 6000 votes, is that any big loss?
Do you believe he will lose the same Lagos in the coming election?
Have you ever heard of landslide electoral victory? With the rate of defection of politicians, who have seen the sign, from LP and PDP to APC, that one should tell you that APC is going to win in 2027 with a landslide votes.
Even Wabara himself may decamp before that time to APC. So prepare your mind for anything when it comes to Nigeria politics. He will lose Lagos again and some northern states Remember 2023 Tinubu presented himself to the north as a Muslim Muslim candidate.. 2027 he is boldly coming out as a Southern candidates So what do you expect? Peter Obi will still win SE and will definitely get the majority votes in SS... Tinubu will definitely lose some NW and NE states .. The only problem now is INEC, if they will be free and fair like 2015.. |
