Sports / When An Unstoppable Object Hits An Immovable Object What Next? by Sportunes: 10:32am On Sep 15, 2013
All roads led to the MGM gardens Arena, Las Vegas to witness the battle of the invincibles. Both boxers American Floyd Mayweather and Mexican Canelo Alvarez have had an unblemished record all through their professional career. Before the showdown, Alvarez had walked into the ring for a professional boxing match 42 times, 42 times he's left with his hand raised high in the air. Mayweather not to be outdone was also on a 44 match winning streak in as many bouts. So when it was announced four months ago that these two raging bulls would be coming head to head for the first time in their history, the boxing world paused a bit and wondered what might possibly happen when an unstoppable object hits an immovable object?

It was a night that lived up to the billing as even top American celebrities like Justin Bieber, Heidi Klum, Jack Nicholson, Denzel Washington, LL Cool J, Sean 'Diddy' Combs and even rapper Lil Wayne who acted as a 'town crier' to herald the grand entry of Mayweather, all graced the occasion.

After all said and done, it was 36 year old Mayweather that dominated throughout the fight. He seemed unfazed by Alvarez's 15 extra pounds, as he constantly hit the target and left his opponent hitting thin air. The American really demonstrated all his defensive mastery in shutting out the 23-year-old Alvarez over 12 rounds.

Mayweather now has a professional record of 45 wins without a single defeat;won this bout with two judges decision of 116-112,117-111,but got a draw on the score card of the third judge with 114-114,which made the whole MGM Grand Arena go all surprised with such a decision as even Mayweather gave a swear word saying :'What the F**k'.

Despite some baleful exchanges in the ring, the 36 year old still had gracious words for Alvarez ‘Canelo is young and strong and great Mexican champion. I take my hat off to him and the people of Mexico. He put up a good fight.’

This bout would make the American pocket a sum of $45m as part of his rolling contract with Showtime Pay Per View (PPV) deal. Alvarez on the other hand would also pocket a sum of $12m, but then would have to come back stronger now that he has suffered a first professional loss in his 8 years boxing carrier.

"I didn't know how to get him, it's extremely simple," Alvarez explained. "He's a great fighter, very intelligent. The frustration was getting in there, but he's a great fighter. We tried to catch him."

Sports / There's Nothing Special About Rooney And Eto, Ozil Is The Special One by Sportunes: 9:03pm On Sep 14, 2013
I don't think its all free kicks that see the back of the net that should be described as superb.. I would have saved Rooney's free kick with my Legs... Without taking anything away from Ramsey, Ozil was definitely Arsenal's man of the match today... with that kinda performance, The Emirates is gonna receive another statue sooner or later. Please who saw the Mancity game, they fielded an attack worth close to 100 million pounds, yet no goal against Stoke!!The team that shocked me the most was Tottenham, If anybody had told me the north London team would actually score from open play this season, I would have called that person a mad man.. But they actually proved me mad, as they scored from open play, not once but twice... Unsurprisingly, Chelsea lost against Everton! Any team that has present day Eto in it's starting 11 is not a serious team and should be counted as mediocres. The Cameroonian struggled to make a name for himself in the Russian league ( a league ranked 8th in the Uefa Ranking), who does he want to threaten in the best league in the world??

Flop of the Day

Theo Walcott

The English man abused the striking profession today as he missed three clear cut chances, hence denying Mesut Ozil Quadruple assists on his debut.

Sports / Relax Gunners!!! Ozil Isn't Winning You Any Trophies. by Sportunes: 7:28pm On Sep 05, 2013
Throughout the summer, Arsenal fans have been irritated and upset with Wenger due to his failure to sign his reported targets. First it was Gonzalo Higuain, then Luiz Suarez and more comically Wayne Rooney. The Frenchman was window shopping as vigorously as an excited teenage girl. It was amusing really. Wenger's only buys were Yaya Sanogo, a relatively unknown striker from France and old player Mathieu Flamini who was released by Milan. Most Arsenal fans had given up, until transfer deadline day. First it was goalkeeper Marc Viviano then Arsenal and Arsene Wenger shocked the entire footballing world by announcing the signing of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid for a club record fee of €47 million. It was a shocker!!! Arsenal fans trooped out to celebrate their marquee signing and some fans would have felt their 'In Wenger we trust' banner was finally justified. The Frenchman must have felt a big signing would have appeased his club's angry fans. He was right. However sorry to burst your bubble gunners but signing Ozil aint winning you trophies.

Don't get me wrong. The German is definitely a world class player with bags of talent. As you must have read on this blog, I had compared Ozil with both Iniesta and Xavi and concluded that Mesut was better than the two (HERE). Statistically that is. Arsenal can do with the German in terms of his pure play making ability and his impressive goal assist ratio. He created over 90 goals while at Madrid and notched up 27 goals. Madrid however won only three trophies with such impressive numbers.

Arsenal's problems are deeper than signing Ozil. Wenger sold or released about 15 players in the off season and didn't recruit any notable replacements. The backline is as suspect as ever with Thomas Vermaelen as injury prone as ever and Laurent Koscielny a tackle away from a red card. Per Metersacker seems like Wenger's most stable defender but even him gets caught out. The Aston Villa match was a warning shot.

The defensive midfield also needed an enforcer and Wenger failed to bring in one. Flamini is more like a stop gap and doesn't offer a long term solution. Frankly he is past his prime. Luiz Gustavo was a potential target but a more serious minded Wolfsburg snapped him up. The wide areas also needed fresh legs. Theo Walcott has improved but can be inconsistent while Lukas Podolski looks awkward in wide areas. Chamberlain is coming good but can't be trusted in the big games. The biggest mistake was not signing another striker to compliment Oliver Giroud. The Frenchman has finally found his scoring boots but an injury means only Yaya Sanogo and a match rusty Nicklas Bendtner are the only backups. Not good.

For a league as long and brutal as the Premier League, Arsenal don't have the squad to compete for the long haul and another 4th place finish seems in order. That is not even guaranteed with cross town rivals Tottenham spending furiously and Liverpool looking solid this start to the season. Ozil doesn't solve all these problems.

Back to the German. Even though I'm a big fan, Ozil has many flaws that sometimes shadow his abilities. Though he has impressive stats, he tends to drift off in the big games and becomes a bystander. He gets tired way too quickly and hardly finished a game at Madrid. To me he was the 70 minute man. His work rate is poor, a reason Madrid sold him. His failure to track back infuriated Ancellotti in the first game of the season against Betis. He can also be wasteful in front of goal, missing glorious chances that should be tucked away. Also he gets dispossed off the ball too easily. That's was all in the Spanish League, a league known to be slow paced. How he will cope in the fast and furious Premier League remains to be seen. One things for sure, 90 mins games aren't visible for the playmaker.

Its been a brillaint transfer widow, one that was interesting to the last second. Arsenal must be credited as the club that made the most sensational move. Their fans thinks so as well, jubilating on the streets and boasting on Twitter. Its unfortunate all the euphoria won't land a trophy. Even with Mesut Ozil.

Sports / Maradona Threatens To Shut Down Nightclub If They Don’t Play More Music For Him by Sportunes: 10:27am On Sep 05, 2013
At 7:00 am, the only thing Maradona wanted to do was keep dancing.

Sadly, the Buenos Aires nightclub hosting his party session was closing up since normal people have things to do around that time of day.

But Maradona - whose night out was reportedly linked to a business conference - does not stand for those types of shenanigans, so he pleaded with the owner to keep the beat alive.

Accompanied by his 22-year-old fiancee, Rocio Olivera, Maradona asked the club owner for another half hour of tunes.

When the owner declined, Maradona said: "If you do not play more music, I'll have (Argentina secretary of commerce Guillermo) Moreno close this place because Moreno is with me and you'll suck ****."

Unbeknown to Maradona at the time, he was being 'paparazzid' while he made the threats.

Sports / Arsenal's Win Over Fenerbache Was An Excercise In Futility by Sportunes: 10:29am On Aug 30, 2013
Its no more news that Arsenal beat Fenerbache to qualify for the Champions league proper, in fact the north London club have been drawn in a group which pundits all over the world have tagged 'group of death'.

But the news on everybody's lips now is the suspension of Fenerbache from European competetions. The Turkish club were expelled by UEFA in June after judging that club officials helped fix matches to win the 2011 Turkish league title. UEFA rules bar clubs which are implicated in fixing matches played since April 2007. But the Turks tendered an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) which hence allowed them participate in the Champs Lge qualifiers, CAS have however confirmed the dismissal of Fener's appeal against the two-year competition ban imposed by UEFA.

The ruling immediately removes Fenerbahce from the group stage of the Europa League as they were due to join the second-tier competition and have been replaced by Cyprus club APOEL after a mini-draw of sides who missed out.

What this means is that Arsenal's win against the Turks was an exercise in futility. Arsene Wenger who fielded a strong side to send them on a 5-0 aggregate win at the cost of injuries to Lukas Podolski, Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey.

The Arsenal manager revealed yesterday that Podolski who was stretched out of the match due an hamstring injury, could be out for up to ten weeks. However there's been some encouraging news for the Arsenal faithfuls as reports coming out of Emirates this morning, claim Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey have been passed fit to face Tottenham on Sunday.

Arsenal could have just sit back, chillax at home and find themselves in the Group stages of the UEFA Champs Lge for the 16th year in a row.

Sports / Goal Line Technology Has No Place In Football by Sportunes: 3:42pm On Aug 28, 2013
Micheal Platini is the most important man In European football and he’s the lone ranger blocking Goal line technology from coming into Europe. The French man has reiterated many times his insubordination for the technology, with critics dubbing him as Techno-phobic.

"It is not a question of goal-line technology, it is a question of technology. Where do you begin with the technology and where do you end with the technology? Technology is helpful but we have to draw the lines on certain things," the UEFA president told reporters.

For the 52 year old, it might be deeper than just being a Technophobe;

"To put goal-line technology in our competitions would cost €50 million in five years. I prefer to give €50m to the grassroots and development in football rather than to put €50m into technology for perhaps one or two goals per year. That's a lot of money per goal.

"We supported the additional referees which are now accepted by the international board, and with the referee one metre from the line I think if he has good glasses he can see if the ball is inside the goal or outside."

But you all can call him whatever name you like, in my own opinion Goal line technology should have no place in our beautiful game.

Poco a Poco, the GLT is carving a niche for itself in football, its been used in a couple of FIFA organized tournaments most especially the 2012 FIFA world club cup and the 2013 FIFA confederations cup.

It must be highlighted that in the two glamorous tourneys, there was no such moment that would have left fans pondering if the round leather crossed the line or not. So therefore the technology used in Japan and Brazil was a waste.

Despite the fact that i feel the technology would undermine the referees’ authority, i'm also convinced it will cause more delays — Albeit, lengthy stoppages around bookings and after fouls already, and such delays would in any case add to rather than subtract from the drama.

This technology would impact on the human element of the game and remove the enjoyment of debating mistakes. Let's take Tennis for instance, My favorite Grand Slam of the year is the French Open, why? It's the only slam that doesnt make use of the hawk - eye. Hence the clay-slam leaves us with an ocean of memories to sail on, But talk about Wimbledon, Aussie open and the US open.. We remember absolutely nothing about them.

FIFA Boss Joseph Sepp Blatter used to share my opinion when he was still in the light:

“I am in favour of putting the whole thing on ice. We have to live with errors. Football has to keep its human face.”

I’m deeply suspicious of corporate involvement in the laws of football. As expected the English Premier league has adopted the Hawk - Eye system and it has cost each EPL club £250,000 to install the necessary cameras and the clubs must dish out thousands of pounds to operate the system every game. While I accept that it is entirely likely that future injustices 'will be prevented' thanks to Hawk-Eye I can’t shake the feeling that the real winners are Sony, who own Hawk-Eye.

The financial implications should also be emphasized on. Earlier, I talked about GLT being introduced in the world club cup and confed cup, Well, FIFA spent close to a million dollars on the wasteful system.... that’s about 150 million Naira down the drain. If that money was poured into Pepsi Academy here in Lagos, may be proprietor Kashimawo Laloko would have given us more Mikel Obi's.

Moving on from the Confed cup, FIFA has retained the services of German system GoalControl-4D for next year's world cup. GoalControl costs $267,000 per stadium to install, and $4,000 per match to operate. Twelve stadiums are to host the one month festivities and if my mathematics is correct, that's over $3 million to be wasted!!!!... I rest my case

FIFA should stop casting pearls before swines, they need to get their priorities right, go back to the drawing board and really ask them selves if this Goal Line Technology is really worth it.

I believe that the consequences of the occasional mistakes made by referees and their assistants, while frustrating at the time, are over exaggerated by a broadcast media especially the English media.

Fifa dropped its long-standing opposition to the introduction of GLT in 2010 following Frank Lampard's disallowed goal against Germany at the World Cup in South Africa. His shot hit the bar and bounced down over the line, but a goal was not given by officials. The way the English press painted the picture, one would think that was the world cup winning goal in a GLT era.

Sepp Blatter apologised to the English Football Association (FA) after the incident and hence the birth of Goal Line Technology:

"For me as Fifa president it became evident the moment what happened in South Africa in 2010. I have to say 'thank you, Lampard'. I was completely down in South Africa when I saw that it really shocked me, it took me a day to react."

So if tomorrow, Wayne Rooney or any of the 3 Lions score a legit goal, only to be wrongly ruled out for offside, Guess what, Offside line technology.

Michel Platini says: “It’s not goal-line technology in itself, I am against technology coming into force to actually make decisions.”

“If tomorrow someone handballs it on the line and the referee doesn’t see it, what then?. We can’t just have goal-line technology. We also need sensors to see if someone has handballed it.”

Imagine a terrifying scenario where a game of football gets stopped at every turn, I cant deal!!

But, The head of the World football governing body Blatter has insisted, however, that there would be no move to introduce any video replays or other technology to rule on decisions such as offsides, fouls or diving. He said: "Other than the goalline technology, football must preserve its human face."

Many of you may think my opinion on the hi-tech will change after i get my own share of Goal line injustice. Well, February 13 2000 still lingers in my memory. Just like many of you, I was routing for a Victor Ikpeba goal in that infamous shoot out against Cameroon. But when Referee Mouraad Dammie blew No Goal after the ball had clearly crossed the line, Me and other sixty thousand Patriotic Lagosians present at the National stadium Surulere on that Dark Sunday felt the whole earth quaking on our heads.

Trust me, I'm just like any of you, I am an absolute fan of justice. I don't think its okay for an athlete to have worked hard all year just to get to the spotlight, only to be denied by human error.

But Human error should have Human solutions, FIFA can draw a Plan A from UEFA competitions, where additional referees are stationed at each side of the goal. Fortunately and unfortunately for FIFA, If plan A doesn't meet up to standard, they still have 25 other alphabets to work with... If after all said and done, a valid goal still wont be spotted, then C'est La Vie.

Sports / Papiss Cisse Opens His Doors To Newcastle United Fans As He Throws BBQ Party by Sportunes: 6:55pm On Aug 27, 2013
Papiss Cisse's misdemeanor for the better part of the summer has been well documented by Sportunes, It was tension galore between the Senegalese striker and his club Newcastle after he initially refused to wear the new Wonga kit based on religious grounds (http://sportunes91..com/2013/07/papiss-cisse-forced-to-train-alone-as.html). The forward has since turned a new leaf as he's been donning the jersey since the start of the season, and it seems the 28 year old is trying to win back the hearts of the toons too.

Over the weekend, he invited a small gaggle of Newcastle fans around for a BBQ in his back garden, though his guests were also given a tour of his house while the younger members of the group also played a bit of pool and FIFA 13 with their No.9 before he surprised them with personalised replica shirts and a kickabout on his lawn.

Cisse told the Chronicle:

“I’ve liked it here from day one. I feel very much at home. I like the area and the supporters and the city. For me now it is all about making them happy.

“For me, [engaging with the fans] is an obligation, a duty if you like. To me, when I pull on the shirt it is for the fans.

“When I first came here I didn’t realise so many kids and so many fans would feel the way they do about me. Now my duty is to make them happy for as long as I can do it.”

Sports / Bored Couple Caught Havin Sex On D Pitch Afta Brondbys 0-0 Draw Against Randers by Sportunes: 6:45pm On Aug 27, 2013
I cant count how many times I yawned while watching that yesterday's boring goaless match at Old Trafford, the only thing that kept me glued to the screen was because I had to keep you guyz posted. Yes the Elclasico of England was that boring! Now imagine how less entertaining a 0-0 snoregasm between Brondby and Randers in the Danish Superliga would have played out?

The match played on Sunday was so dull that one particularly bored couple decided they had no other option than to have sex in the middle of the pitch immediately after the final whistle in the desperate hope of livening up their night a bit.

Apparently, the exhibitionists snuck out onto the turf after the rest of the fans had left the stadium, whipped off their clothes and began copulating in the middle of the pitch in full view of Brondby’s press officer Mikkel Davidsen – who dutifully a photo and posted it straight onto Twitter before the club’s security officer interrupted the post-game show and threw the pair out of the stadium.

Sports / What's The Mata? Mourinho 's Loss If He Sells The Spaniard. by Sportunes: 12:54pm On Aug 27, 2013
One thing is clear about Jose Mourinho. He is a meticulous manager with an eye for details. Even the smallest. While he was scribbling away on his notepad in the dugout at the Bernabeu, he was probably drawing up how he wanted his new look Chelsea side to look and clearly, Juan Mata was not one of the players he had in mind. A baffling question that only Jose can answer is; Why bench Chelsea's best player and even want to sell him? Mourinho never ceases to amaze me!!!

Juan Mata has been something of statistical anomaly for the Blues. Since his £23.5 million pound move from Valencia in August 2011, Mata has done nothing but to score or create for Chelsea. He has scored a total of 32 goals and assisting 59. He not only helps with numbers but is deadly at set- pieces so much so that corners from Mata has a very good chance of being converted. He is the ideal playmaker and can operate as a winger or even a false nine if required. He was nominated for the PFA player of the year for 2012\2013 and awarded Chelsea's player of the year award after a fantastic season. He was clearly Chelsea's best player and has been for quite some time. So what has changed? Mourinho.

The Portuguese either likes you or doesn't as a player. He is wrong in this case. Mata makes Chelsea much better and if they sell him or frustrate him on the bench, it will be rather unfortunate. Jose should for once be open minded and give honor to whom honor is due. Mata has proven himself on a weekly basis and many clubs will die for his signature. Chelsea's pursuit of Willian seems to have sealed Mata'a fate and the Jose I know will kill Mata softly on the bench( Remember Kaka?) The bench is no place for Mata and is far better than those that Mourinho is starting. What's Frank Lampard doing in the XI? Same old biased Mourinho.

To be realistic, a move away from Stamford Bridge seems ideal especially with the World Cup around the corner and a place in the 23 man Spanish squad definitely not guaranteed. Manchester United are a decent club and Mata is exactly the kind of player United need to boss their suffering midfield. Ater all one man's poison is another man's food. A delicious one at that.

Sports / From Daniel Stupid To Daniel Fantastic: Sturridge Is Reborn At Liverpool. by Sportunes: 7:09pm On Aug 26, 2013
While Daniel Sturridge was at Chelsea, it was not unusual to hear curses rained on the 23 year old. At match centres in my area, you could hear anguished fans shouting; Oloshi( Useless one), Oloriburuku (Cursed one) and so on after countless mistakes and missed chances. He was conceited and selfish and would even applaud himself after a shocking miss.

With an arrogant air around him, he truly believed he could do no wrong and Chelsea frustrated with his attitude, loaned him to Bolton in 2011 where he performed well, scoring 8 goals in 12 appearances. When he returned to Chelsea, people expected the best from Sturridge but alas he dissapointed once again with numerous erratic displays and a penchant for being the Lone Ranger( One Man Mopol). Chelsea finally lost patience with him and sold him to Liverpool in January 2013. What a move it has turned out to be... Thank God Its Friday!! Ordinarily all workers should call it a week, but that's not so for most of our professional athletes as this is actually the beginning of their week. All through weekends they are found running up and down the length of fields, Swinging golf balls, Dunking those baskets, going on some tennis rallies, Driving all over the race circuits.... After the final whistle blows, they go to the Bank to cash their cheques and they start doing things ordinary men dont do.

Our jaiye jaiye athlete of the week goes to Emmanuel Adebayor.. Join us as we take a tour on The Togolese's hang out joints, his hip hop friends, his babes and ofcourse his toyz... http://sportunes91..com/2013/08/jaiye-jaiye-athletes-emmanuel-adebayor.html

Part of our mandate in Sportunes is to let y'all know about the delectable WAGS (Wives And Girlfriends) of your favorite Athletes... Sportunes will be a breeding ground for WAGS as these beautiful women are often scooped up by some of the worlds finest athletes.

Many vault from being previously unknown to becoming household names as we have seen in Andy Roddick and Brooklyn Decker. While some probably made the athletes household names like we saw in Kim n Kris. Some 'equally' shine bright like diamonds alongside their athletic spouses like Mr n Mrs Beckham.

The lifestyle of a professional athlete is stunning already so when these guys get to go home to some of the worlds most beautiful models, forgive us if we don't shed a tear for them.

Our WAG of the week goes to;

Sports / How Real Madrid Fell For Tottenham's Scam by Sportunes: 8:53am On Aug 23, 2013
It has to be a joke. A real good joke coming out of Madrid. Gareth Bale has joined Real Madrid for a reported fee of £93 million from Tottenham Hotspurs, a new world record fee to smash that of Cristiano Ronaldo's £80 million move from Man Utd to the Spanish capital. For all intents and purposes, I think Florentino Perez has finally lost it.

Don't get me wrong. Bale is definitely a talented player who has the ability to turn a game single- handedly to his teams favour. When Spurs competed in their maiden season in the Champions League, we all saw what he was capable of, scoring a hat- trick against Inter Milan and disgraced Maicon who at the time was the best right back in the world. The former Southampton man who started as a left full back was converted to a left winger under Harry Redknapp and Harry Houdini as he is fondly called waved his magic wand to great effect.

The Wolverine look alike since then has developed into a world class winger who defenders are terrified of and surely Bale's best season was the 2012\2013 campaign where he scored a total of 26 goals, 21 in the league. He was the main propeller for Tottenham's push for a top four finish and even though they finished 5th, Bale certainly proved himself and the FA thought so as well awarding him the PFA player of the year and PFA young player of the year. What a player eh? Still not worth £50 million in my opinion.

One thing is clear. Madrid need to make a Galatico signing to rival that of Barcelona's which arrived in the frame of Neymar. The Brazilian joined from Santos for €57 ( a rather high fee) Carlo Ancellotti demanded Bale as his No1 target and Florentino Perez promised him the Welshman. When Cristiano moved for £80million in 2009, it seemed crazy at the time, Not so crazy as the Portuguese recouped the money for Madrid instantly and hasn't stopped scoring since the word GO!. His goal scoring record reads 201 goals in 199 appearances.

He is well on his way to become a Madrid Legend and has justified his hefty transfer fee. Ronaldo was a tested and trusted player at the time he moved from United. He had won the league and champions league with United scoring goals for fun along the way. Bale has not won a single trophy since he was born. Why spend so much on a player that hasn't had a huge role in a title winning team?

The Gareth Bale I know has the tendency to switch off in big games and playing for Madrid is not the same as playing for Spurs. It is a completely different atmosphere, a much more demnading one where the fans are impatient and a bad game is seen as a taboo.

Can he live with that? Can he perform at the highest level week in week out? I don't think so. A good season is not enough for him to command such an insane price on the market. Daniel Levy must be praised for getting fantastic deals for his players and even he must think Madrid must be insane for coughing up such an amount. I'm afraid Madrid signed Bale for the wrong reasons and even though he is good, I'm sorry but no player is worth €105 million. Its just insane!!!
