EducationU.S. Proposes To Allow Drone Operation At Night, Over People by Spymaster2019(op): 1:14pm On Jan 15, 2019
The Trump administration on Monday proposed rules that would allow drones to operate over populated areas and end a requirement for special permits for night use, long-awaited actions that are expected to help speed commercial use of small unmanned aerial vehicles in the United States.

The proposals, drafted by the Federal Aviation Administration of the U.S. Transportation Department, come amid concerns about dangers that drones potentially pose to aircraft and populated areas.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said the department was aware of drone safety issues.

“The department is keenly aware that there are legitimate public concerns about drones, concerning safety, security and privacy,” Chao said at a speech in Washington.

CareerMillions Of Chinese Cvs Exposed On Cloud Server by Spymaster2019(op): 12:24pm On Jan 15, 2019
A database containing resumes of more than 200 million Chinese people has been found exposed online.

Security firm Hackenproof said the “very detailed” information lacked even the most basic security protections.

Names, mobile phone numbers, email addresses, education histories and many other personal details were included in the data trove.

Analysis suggested the information was built up by “scraping” several Chinese job sites.

The data loss is the latest in a series that have exposed information about Chinese people.

EducationGoogle Backed On Limiting Search Results Over Right To Be Forgotten by Spymaster2019(op): 12:03am On Jan 13, 2019
A senior adviser to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) has backed Google’s legal bid to limit individuals’ “right to be forgotten” to searches in Europe.

Google sought to limit the law’s scope, after France asked for it to be extended globally.

The law lets people ask Google to remove information deemed “inaccurate, inadequate, irrelevant or excessive” from its search engine.

ECJ rulings typically follow the adviser’s decision. The court is scheduled to make a decision about which nations were subject to the right later in 2019.

Technology MarketAmazon To Double Down On Gaming With New Streaming Device by Spymaster2019(op): 9:47am On Jan 12, 2019
Amazon is now developing its own streamed gaming service, according to its sources. It’s already talking with publishers to stream their titles on the platform, and it aims to launch it next year.

A streamed gaming service from Amazon not only would complement what Amazon is already offering in streamed media — which today includes video, music, photo storage and more — but it will put Amazon squarely in competition with those that are working on, or have already launched, their own streamed gaming efforts. Players include Sony’s PlayStation Now, Microsoft, Google, Nvidia and Electronic Arts.

To be clear, Amazon already offers streamed gaming in a limited format. Prime subscribers get access to “Twitch Prime,” which provides users with free games every month, along with select free in-game perks. This is separate to Twitch’s mainstay product, a video streaming service that works alongside other games creating a social network of sorts, where users watch each other playing and commenting on playing games.

CareerJeff Bezos Leaves $137 B On The Line Without Prenup In Divorce by Spymaster2019(op): 1:54pm On Jan 11, 2019
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and his wife, MacKenzie, who announced they are divorcing after 25 years of marriage, did not have a prenuptial agreement — meaning they will divide their gargantuan fortune equally, according to a report on Thursday,

Bezos, 54 — who sits at the top of Forbes’ world billionaires ranking with a real-time worth of $137.1 billion — and MacKenzie, 48, an award-winning novelist, live in Washington state, a “community property state,” meaning divorcing couples without a prenup split assets 50-50, according to TMZ, which cited “sources with direct knowledge” of their arrangement.

Since Amazon was founded a year after the Bezoses tied the knot, MacKenzie could fetch as much as $66 billion based on the value of the company today, according to CNBC.

To fund a settlement of that magnitude, Bezos would have sell or pledge shares, which could dilute his ownership and control of the company.

He owns just under 80 million shares, or just under 16 percent of Amazon, CNBC reported, citing regulatory filings.

But divorce lawyers say MacKenzie will very likely want the family fortune to keep growing, so she would probably not push for a settlement that would require him to sell shares, according to the news outlet.

CelebritiesCES 2019: ‘award-winning’ intimacy gadget For Women Withdrawn From Show by Spymaster2019(op): 1:01pm On Jan 10, 2019
A intimacy gadget designed for women has been banned from the technology show CES.

Lora DiCarlo said it had been invited to display its robotic Ose vibrator at CES, after winning an innovation award.

CES organiser the Consumer Technology Association, which granted the award, said it had included the device by mistake and could withdraw any immoral or obscene entry at any time.

Lora DiCarlo chief executive Lora Haddock said the CES and CTA had a history of gender bias. In a statement to The Next Web, the CTA said: “The product does not fit into any of our existing product categories and should not have been accepted. We have apologised to the company for our mistake.”

But, in a statement on the Lora DiCarlo website, Ms Haddock cites several examples of other female-oriented products included in the award category the vibrator was in. “Two robotic vacuum cleaners, one robotic skateboard, four children’s toys, one shopping companion robot – looks like all of women’s interests are covered, right?” she said. “Ose clearly fits the robotics and drone category – and CTA’s own expert judges agree.”

The product had been designed in partnership with a robotics laboratory at Oregon State University and had eight patents pending for “robotics, biomimicry, and engineering feats”, Ms Haddock said.

“We firmly believe that women, non-binary, gender non-conforming, and LGBTQI folks should be vocally claiming our space in pleasure and tech,” she said.

EducationZuckerberg Plans Public Tech Discussions by Spymaster2019(op): 12:49pm On Jan 10, 2019
Mark Zuckerberg is to hold a series of public discussions on the subject of technology and its future in society.

The Facebook boss plans to tackle issues such as artificial intelligence (AI) and jobs, free speech on the net and the growth of online communities.

He said he would talk to “leaders, experts, and people in our community”.

Every year Mr Zuckerberg sets himself challenges, which in the past have included running 365 miles, visiting every US state and learning Mandarin.

He admitted that he would find the discussions – his challenge for 2019 – taxing.

“I’m an engineer and I used to just build out my ideas and hope they’d mostly speak for themselves,” he wrote on his Facebook page, where he announced the news.

“But given the importance of what we do, that doesn’t cut it anymore.

“So, I’m going to put myself out there more than I’ve been comfortable with and engage more in some of these debates about the future, the tradeoffs we face and where we want to go.”

He said the discussions would be viewable either on Facebook or Instagram or “other media”.

Technology MarketCES 2019: Ibm’s Hourly Weather Reports Will Cover Entire Earth by Spymaster2019(op): 7:36pm On Jan 09, 2019
A weather forecasting system that can provide hourly updates for any location on the planet has been announced by technology giant IBM.

Currently in many African, Asian and South American countries, weather reports may be available only every six to 12 hours and only for broad patches of land up to 15km (9.3 miles) wide.

But IBM’s new tool provides reports down to more specific, 3km-wide areas.

The company says it can even predict individual thunderstorms.

The tool, announced at the CES tech show in Las Vegas and launched in partnership with The Weather Channel, uses supercomputers to crunch data from hundreds of millions of sensors around the globe.

“The scale is almost incomprehensible to people – from a compute and complexity point of view,” Cameron Clayton, at IBM, told BBC News.

“A farmer in Kansas has really good weather [forecasts] today but a farmer in Kenya only gets a weather forecast once, maybe twice, a day – they’ll now get it hourly.”

Technology MarketSmartphone Users Warned To Be Careful Of The Antichrist by Spymaster2019(op): 5:55pm On Jan 09, 2019
If you are a conspiracy theorist who wants to know how the earth or humanity would end, here’s a little tip for you. The Antichrist is almost here. All you need to do to hasten his journey is to use your phone and other modern technology, and soon enough, he will check into earth.

People’s dependence on smartphones and modern technology could bring about the coming of the Antichrist, the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church has warned. Speaking to Russian state TV, Patriarch Kirill said smartphone users should be careful when using the “worldwide web of gadgets” because it represented “an opportunity to gain global control over mankind.”

Apparently, apart from being a biblical villain, the Antichrist will also be in a high-level management position that gives him the ultimate power. “The Antichrist is the person who will be at the head of the worldwide web, controlling all of humankind,” he said. “Every time you use your gadget, whether you like it or not, whether you turn on your location or not, somebody can find out exactly where you are, exactly what your interests are and exactly what you are scared of.”

“Do you imagine what power will be concentrated in the hands of those who gain knowledge about what is going on in the world?”, warned Patriarch Kirill.

But Kirill doesn’t believe that all “technological progress” will alert the supervillain. Patriarch Kirill said his Church was not against “technological progress”, rather “the development of a system that is aimed at controlling a person’s identity”.

EducationNew Documents Link Huawei To Suspected Front Companies In Iran, Syria by Spymaster2019(op): 5:11pm On Jan 09, 2019
The U.S. case against the chief financial officer of China’s Huawei Technologies, who was arrested in Canada last month, centers on the company’s suspected ties to two obscure companies. One is a telecom equipment seller that operated in Tehran; the other is that firm’s owner, a holding company registered in Mauritius.

U.S. authorities allege CFO Meng Wanzhou deceived international banks into clearing transactions with Iran by claiming the two companies were independent of Huawei, when in fact Huawei controlled them. Huawei has maintained the two are independent: equipment seller Skycom Tech Co Ltd and shell company Canicula Holdings Ltd.

But corporate filings and other documents found by Reuters in Iran and Syria show that Huawei, the world’s largest supplier of telecommunications network equipment, is more closely linked to both firms than previously known.

The documents reveal that a high-level Huawei executive appears to have been appointed Skycom’s Iran manager. They also show that at least three Chinese-named individuals had signing rights for both Huawei and Skycom bank accounts in Iran. Reuters also discovered that a Middle Eastern lawyer said Huawei conducted operations in Syria through Canicula.

The previously unreported ties between Huawei and the two companies could bear on the U.S. case against Meng, who is the daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, by further undermining Huawei’s claims that Skycom was merely an arms-length business partner.

CrimeTurkey To Investigate Whether Google Violated Competition Law by Spymaster2019(op): 1:27pm On Jan 08, 2019
Turkey’s competition authority said on Monday it had launched an investigation into whether internet search engine Google broke competition law with algorithms it uses for searches and to target advertisements.

The probe follows a complaint that Alphabet Inc’s Google unit had “abused its dominant position and made the efforts of other companies difficult”, the authority said.

The investigation will include companies Google Reklamcilik ve Pazarlama, Google International LLC, Google LLC, Google Ireland Limited and Alphabet Inc., it said.

Calls by Reuters to Google Reklamcilik ve Pazarlama, Alphabet’s local unit, were not answered on Monday.

In September, the authority fined Google some 93 million Turkish lira ($17.38 million) for violating competition law with its mobile software sales.

The Trump administration on Monday launched a drive to push U.S. firms to better protect their trade secrets from foreign hackers, following a slew of cases accusing individuals and companies of economic espionage for China.

U.S. companies hit by recent attacks included Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (HPE.N) and International Business Machines Corp

The National Counter-Intelligence and Security Center, which coordinates counter-intelligence efforts within the U.S. government, launched the outreach campaign to address persistent concerns that many companies are not doing enough to guard against cyber theft.

The Center is worried about cyber attacks on U.S. government agencies and the private sector from China, Russia, North Korea and Iran.

BusinessAmazon Just Became The Most Valuable Public Company In The U.S. by Spymaster2019(op): 12:34pm On Jan 08, 2019
Amazon stole Microsoft’s spot as the most valuable publicly traded U.S. company Monday morning with a market capitalization of $790 billion versus its competitor’s $785 billion, CNBC reports.

Microsoft had held the top spot since Nov. 28.

Adding insult to injury, this shift in rankings came the same day that Microsoft announced a new partnership with Kroger to create futuristic, digitally savvy grocery stores. This is a direct challenge to Amazon, which acquired Whole Foods in 2017 and has been rolling out brick-and-mortar, cashierless retail stores across the country.

In recent months, Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon have been battling to be the world’s most valuable public company after years of dominance by Apple. November marked the first time that Microsoft had surpassed Apple in eight years amid concerns by investors about Apple’s growth.

Technology MarketThe All-electric Polestar 2 Will Be The 1st Car With Google’s Native Android Aut by Spymaster2019(op): 5:27pm On Jan 07, 2019
Volvo’s futuristic performance brand Polestar released the first teaser image of its second car this week (seen above). The aptly named Polestar 2 will be Volvo’s first all-electric car, and has specs (on paper, at least) that match up with some of the best EVs that are about to hit the road. It will also be the first car to run Google’s native version of Android Auto — something the tech conglomerate has spent the last few years working on.

At the I/O, in 2018, Google showed off a working version of this on a Volvo XC40. While it looked a lot like Volvo’s own Sensus infotainment system, the SUV’s screen was really powered by Android P. It also had a dedicated Google Assistant button on the steering wheel, which could be used to play music, get directions, or even change the cabin temperature. Here’s what The Verge’s tech editor Natt Garun said at the time:

It features an updated UI with four menu bars that you can slide to reveal more control modules. The tiles on the updated UI are big and colorful — app icons stand out more clearly, and overall it feels like there’s an Android tablet strapped to the center of the car, down to the center home button. You can also drag down from the top like you would on a smartphone to see notifications. In the new system, there’s now a Google Play button that lets you browse and install Android Auto-approved apps, such as Deezer, Pocketcasts, or Telegram. The goal is not to be distracted on the road, so video apps like YouTube will specifically be left out.

Google has lent help to automakers in developing infotainment systems before — like combining Fiat Chrysler’s Uconnect with Android Nougat — but the partnership with Volvo is the most fully baked attempt at using Android to power the screens inside a car.

Technology MarketHuawei Unveils New Chipset Using ARM Design For Server Push by Spymaster2019(op): 2:23pm On Jan 07, 2019
Huawei Technologies Co. unveiled a new processor chip for servers as the Chinese telecommunications gear giant pushes ahead with expansion despite closer scrutiny from abroad.

The Kunpeng 920 is built using the cutting edge 7-nanometer process and uses the semiconductor architecture of ARM Holdings, Shenzhen-based Huawei said in a statement on Monday. The new chips would compete with the dominant x86 server architecture used by U.S. giants Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

Huawei is showing no signs of tempering its ambitions even after a number of setbacks on the international stage. Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou was arrested last year on allegations of violating sanctions on Iran, the U.S. and its allies are questioning its security and some wireless customers have resisted using its technology. The company has long rejected suggestions its gear poses a risk.

Technology MarketApple Inks Deal With Samsung To Distribute Itunes Shows On Tvs by Spymaster2019(op): 9:57am On Jan 07, 2019
Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said Sunday that it will add an app to its smart televisions in the coming months to let owners watch content bought on Apple Inc’s iTunes service, a possible first sign Apple is looking to distribute its forthcoming television service on devices made by others.

The deal is part of an ongoing strategy shift for Apple, which is facing weak hardware sales in China and a saturated global smart phone market where users are hanging on to their old iPhones longer than ever, hammering its biggest business.

As a result, Apple is increasingly leaning on its services segment, which includes businesses such as iCloud storage in addition to its music, television and movie content businesses.

CareerHuawei Staff Punished After Official Tweet Posted ‘via Iphone’ by Spymaster2019(op): 10:14am On Jan 06, 2019
Two Huawei employees who sent a message from the Chinese telecom firm’s Twitter account using an iPhone device have been punished, a memo says.

The tweet, posted on New Year’s Day, wished followers a “Happy 2019” while displaying “via Twitter for iPhone”.

Chinese companies have been trying to steer employees toward Huawei products and away from US rival Apple.

Last year, Huawei overtook Apple in the number of handsets shipped worldwide, making it second only to Samsung.

On Friday, a report by Reuters news agency – citing an internal company memo – said that the Huawei staff involved in the Twitter blunder had been demoted and would be receiving reduced salaries.

The new year message was quickly removed from Huawei’s official Twitter feed but was shared by users of the social media site.

Technology MarketGoogle Shifted $23 Billion To Tax Haven Bermuda In 2017: Filing by Spymaster2019(op):
Google moved 19.9 billion euros ($22.7 billion) through a Dutch shell company to Bermuda in 2017, as part of an arrangement that allows it to reduce its foreign tax bill, according to documents filed at the Dutch Chamber of Commerce.

The amount channeled through Google Netherlands Holdings BV was around 4 billion euros more than in 2016, the documents, filed on Dec. 21, showed.

“We pay all of the taxes due and comply with the tax laws in every country we operate in around the world,” Google said in a statement.

“Google, like other multinational companies, pays the vast majority of its corporate income tax in its home country, and we have paid a global effective tax rate of 26 percent over the last ten years.”

For more than a decade the arrangement has allowed Google owner Alphabet (GOOGL.O) to enjoy an effective tax rate in the single digits on its non-U.S. profits, around a quarter the average tax rate in its overseas markets.

The subsidiary in the Netherlands is used to shift revenue from royalties earned outside the United States to Google Ireland Holdings, an affiliate based in Bermuda, where companies pay no income tax.

Technology MarketApple Ordered To Pull Iphones From 15 Stores In Germany by Spymaster2019(op): 9:12am On Jan 05, 2019
Apple has been ordered to remove some iPhone models from its 15 stores in Germany over a patent dispute with chip giant Qualcomm.

A court ruling in Munich on 20 December found Apple had infringed patents on power-saving technology.

On Thursday Qualcomm paid a €1.3bn (£1.2bn) bond, allowing the ban on iPhone 7 and 8 models to go ahead.

The bond will fund damages awarded to Apple if the iPhone maker wins its appeal against the ban.

The two companies disagree on whether the injunction also covers the sale of iPhones in mobile phone operator shops and other third party retailers.

The iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR models will still be available at Apple stores in the country.

When the judgement was announced in December, Apple said that it planned to appeal the decision.

“Qualcomm’s campaign is a desperate attempt to distract from the real issues between our companies,” said an Apple spokesman at the time.

“Qualcomm insists on charging exorbitant fees based on work they didn’t do and they are being investigated by governments all around the world for their behaviour.”

Under German law, judgements become enforceable once the winner of the patent dispute posts bonds covering potential damages incurred by the losing party, in case the judgment is overturned or amended on appeal.

GamingGaming Worth More Than Video And Music Combined by Spymaster2019(op): 1:25pm On Jan 04, 2019
The video games sector now accounts for more than half of the UK’s entire entertainment market, according to a new report.

The industry is worth £3.86bn ($4.85bn) – more than double its value in 2007 – said the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA).

That makes it more lucrative than video and music combined.

The success is largely down to three games: Fifa 19, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.

The games market has grown, despite the fact that the physical console and PC games market shrank slightly in 2018, and digital also had a modest 12.5% growth.

Chief executive of ERA, Kim Bayley said: “The games industry has been incredibly effective in taking advantage of the potential of digital technology to offer new and compelling forms of entertainment. Despite being the youngest of our three sectors, it is now by far the biggest.”

Alphabet Inc’s Google unit won approval from U.S. regulators to deploy a radar-based motion sensing device known as Project Soli.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said in an order late on Monday that it would grant Google a waiver to operate the Soli sensors at higher power levels than currently allowed. The FCC said the sensors can also be operated aboard aircraft.

The FCC said the decision “will serve the public interest by providing for innovative device control features using touchless hand gesture technology.”

A Google spokeswoman did not immediately comment on Wednesday.
