High-profile YouTubers have been impersonated by scammers sending fake messages to subscribers crafted to look like they were sent by the video stars. The scam messages sent via YouTube’s message system asked recipients to click a link to receive a prize. The names, icons and imagery used by the YouTubers were prominent in the messages to make them look authentic. YouTube said it was looking into ways to spot and stop the impersonation scams. https://techupdate.com.ng/2019/01/27/youtube-stars-warn-of-impersonation-scam/ |

Facebook has said it is “deeply sorry” after it emerged a teenager who took her own life had viewed disturbing content about suicide on social media. Molly Russell, 14, died in 2017. Her father Ian says he believes Instagram “helped kill my daughter”. Facebook, which owns Instagram, said graphic content which sensationalises self-harm and suicide “has no place on our platform”. Advertisers have also raised concerns over ads being next to such posts. According to a BBC investigation, adverts for some UK high street brands are appearing alongside graphic content about self-harm, depression and suicide on the social media app. Instagram says adverts are not targeted to appear next to certain videos or content. Mr Russell earlier told the BBC how after his daughter died, the family began to look at the Instagram accounts she had been following from people who were depressed, self-harming or suicidal. https://techupdate.com.ng/2019/01/25/facebook-sorry-for-distressing-suicide-posts-on-instagram/ |

Sixteen social media stars including singers Ellie Goulding and Rita Ora, models Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Alexa Chung, and vlogger Zoella have agreed to change how they post online. They will have to clearly state if they have been paid or received any gifts or loans of products they endorse. It follows warnings from the Competition and Markets Authority that their posts could break consumer law. Online endorsements can boost brands but can also mislead, said the CMA. The CMA has not made a finding on whether the influencers named breached consumer law, but said all of them volunteered to change their practices following an investigation. However, if they fail to comply with the agreement reached with the CMA, they could be taken to court and face heavy fines or prison sentences of up to two years. https://techupdate.com.ng/2019/01/24/social-media-stars-agree-to-declare-when-they-post-ads/ |
WhatsApp is limiting all its members to forwarding any single message up to five times in an effort to tackle the spread of false information on the platform. The Facebook-owned business had already introduced the policy in India six months ago. The move followed a number of mob lynchings that were blamed on fake reports spread via the service. Until now, users elsewhere could forward messages up to 20 times. The update to the app’s rules was announced at an event in Jakarta, Indonesia. The country is holding its general election in April. The firm told the BBC it had made its decision after “carefully” evaluating the results of its half-year-long test in the country. “The forward limit significantly reduced forwarded messages around the world,” a spokeswoman added. “[This] will help keep WhatsApp focused on private messaging with close contacts. We’ll continue to listen to user feedback about their experience, and over time, look for new ways of addressing viral content.” https://techupdate.com.ng/2019/01/23/whatsapp-restricts-message-sharing-to-fight-fake-news/ |

Shows including Bird Box helped Netflix end 2018 with more than 139 million subscribers, adding 8.8 million members in the last three months of the year. The streaming giant said the growth reflected the success of its original programmes. Netflix-original material now represents the “vast majority” of its most popular shows, executives said. Television viewers in the US also spend an estimated 10% of their time on Netflix, they claimed. The figures accompanied the release of the firm’s quarterly earnings report on Thursday. https://techupdate.com.ng/2019/01/20/netflix-shows-bird-box-drives-subscriber-growth/ |

Zimbabwe has blocked Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp messaging app amid a crackdown on days of violent protests. A coalition of local human rights groups says at least 12 people have been killed and many more beaten and tortured by security forces this week. The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum accused the authorities of cutting off the internet “to mask the massive human rights violations”. The protests were sparked on Monday by a sharp rise in the price of fuel. The government has blamed the opposition and political rights groups for the protests, which has seen riot police clashing with protesters in the capital, Harare, and the southern city of Bulawayo after they lit fires and blocked roads using rocks. https://techupdate.com.ng/2019/01/20/zimbabwe-blocks-facebook-whatsapp-and-twitter-amid-crackdown/ |
Private tweets sent by users of Twitter’s Android app could have been exposed publicly for years. Twitter said it had discovered a security flaw which meant “protected” tweets became public when some changes were made to accounts. Anyone who updated the email address linked to their account between November 2014 and January 2019 could have had messages exposed, it said. Twitter said it had started to let affected users know about the bug. It added that it had turned the protections back on for Android users who had inadvertently switched them off. Twitter said it was also issuing a public notice about the error because it could not confirm the exact number of accounts that had been affected and wanted to reach those it could not identify by an internal investigation. “We’re very sorry this happened and we’re conducting a full review to help prevent this from happening again,” it said. It encouraged users to check their privacy settings to make sure they reflected their preferences. Twitter said it fixed the flaw on 14 January and would share more information if it became available. https://techupdate.com.ng/2019/01/20/twitter-warns-that-private-tweets-were-public-for-years/ |
U.S. regulators have met to discuss imposing a fine against Facebook Inc for violating a legally binding agreement with the government to protect the privacy of personal data, the Washington Post reported on Friday, citing three people familiar with the discussions. The Federal Trade Commission has been investigating Facebook since last year. It has not finalized its findings in the probe or the total amount of the penalty, according to the newspaper. Facebook has talked with FTC staff about the investigation, one of the people familiar with the matter told the Post. However, it is unclear if the company would settle with the FTC by accepting a significant financial penalty, which is expected to be much larger than the $22.5 million fine the agency imposed on Alphabet Inc’s Google in 2012, the report said. https://techupdate.com.ng/2019/01/20/u-s-regulators-discuss-fining-facebook-for-privacy-violations-report/ |
Facebook has removed 500 pages and accounts allegedly involved in peddling fake news in Central Europe, Ukraine and other Eastern European nations. The action ends efforts by two separate groups to “manipulate people”, said Facebook in a blog. The accounts had more than 900,000 followers and between them spent more than $160,000 (£124,000) on adverts. Facebook said the accounts were loosely connected to Russian state groups known to push fake news. The shutdowns hit two separate campaigns that were “engaging in co-ordinated inauthentic behaviour”, it said. The largest group of pages and accounts was located in Russia but targeted its misleading content across most nations and regions in Eastern Europe. https://techupdate.com.ng/2019/01/18/facebook-tackles-russians-making-fake-news-stories/ |

Federal prosecutors are investigating Huawei Technologies[HWT.UL], the world’s largest telecommunications equipment maker, for allegedly stealing trade secrets from U.S. businesses and could soon issue an indictment, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. Citing people familiar with the matter, the Journal said that one area of investigation is the technology behind a device that T-Mobile U.S. Inc (TMUS.O) used for testing smartphones. Reuters could not immediately confirm the report. The action is the latest in a long list taken to fight what some in the Trump administration call China’s cheating through intellectual property theft, illegal corporate subsidies and rules hampering U.S. corporations that want to sell their goods in China. https://techupdate.com.ng/2019/01/17/u-s-investigating-huawei-for-alleged-trade-secret-theft/ |
YouTube clips that depict dangerous or emotionally distressing “pranks” have been banned from the platform. The move comes in response to so-called “challenges” that have sometimes resulted in death or injury. The Google-owned video sharing site said such material had “no place on YouTube”. However, the firm appears to be failing to enforce its existing rules on harmful content. A Buzzfeed report detailed how images depicting, or alluding to, bestiality were still appearing on the site – despite a pledge last April to remove the material. Some of the videos had attracted many millions of views. YouTube said it “worked to aggressively enforce our monetisation policies to eliminate the incentive for this abuse”. https://techupdate.com.ng/2019/01/17/youtube-bans-dangerous-or-harmful-pranks/ |
Niantic, The Company Behind Pokemon Go, Has Raised a New $245 Million Funding Round Augmented reality developer Niantic said Wednesday it has raised $245 million in a Series C funding round led by venture capital firm IVP. In 2015, Niantic spun out of Alphabet as an independent, private company with $35 million in Series A funding from The Pokemon Company Group, Google and Nintendo. Following the launch of Pokemon Go, the company raised $200 million in Series B funding, led by Spark Capital and included additional investors such as NetEase. This latest round will bring the company’s valuation to nearly $4 billion. “IVP is excited to support Niantic in building the future of AR,” IVP’s Sandy Miller said in a statement. “It delivers the magic of AR through highly popular games, but ultimately by delivering an operating system for applications that unite the digital world with the physical world.” The Series C funding will go toward advancing users’ AR experiences by investing in advanced capabilities, machine learning and the Niantic Real World Platform, the company’s operating system that bridges the real and digital world. https://techupdate.com.ng/2019/01/17/niantic-the-company-behind-pokemon-go-has-raised-a-new-245-million-funding-round/ |
