A missing Australian’s body could have been found 18 months earlier if searchers had not relied on incorrect Google Maps data, a coroner has said. Darrell Simon, 46, was last seen in November 2014 at his partner’s house about 80km (50 miles) west of Brisbane. Search crews scoured Mr Simon’s nearby rural property at the time, but his remains were not found there until May 2016. His death was ruled a suicide. A printed map used by police showed incorrect boundaries on the property. It meant that search volunteers covered only about half of Mr Simon’s property in Laidley Creek West, said Queensland deputy state coroner John Lock. “The fact the ground search was conducted over only half the property was very regretful and should not have happened,” he said in his report completed last month. https://techupdate.com.ng/2019/01/03/australian-police-google-maps-blunder-missed-location-of-body/ |
A cyber attack caused major printing and delivery disruptions on Saturday at the Los Angeles Times and other major U.S. newspapers, including ones owned by Tribune Publishing Co such as the Chicago Tribune and Baltimore Sun. The cyber attack appeared to originate outside the United States, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing a source with knowledge of the situation. The attack led to distribution delays in the Saturday edition of The Times, Tribune, Sun and other newspapers that share a production platform in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Times reported. Tribune Publishing, whose newspapers also include the New York Daily News and Orlando Sentinel, said it first detected the malware on Friday. The West Coast editions of the Wall Street Journal and New York Times were hit as they are also printed on the shared production platform, the Los Angeles Times said. https://techupdate.com.ng/2018/12/30/cyber-attack-hits-u-s-newspaper-distribution/ |
Washington DC’s top prosecutor is suing Facebook in the first significant US move to punish the firm for its role in the Cambridge Analytica scandal. District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine filed the lawsuit on Wednesday, said the Washington Post. It accused Facebook of allowing the wholesale scraping of personal data on tens of millions of users. The action adds to a number of regulatory investigations, following a year of privacy and security missteps. A Facebook spokesperson told the BBC: “We’re reviewing the complaint and look forward to continuing our discussions with attorneys general in DC and elsewhere.” As well as this lawsuit, Facebook is being probed by the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice. In the UK, the company was fined £500,000 over the Cambridge Analytica scandal, the maximum fine the British data regulator can impose. https://techupdate.com.ng/2018/12/20/facebook-sued-by-top-prosecutor-over-cambridge-analytica/ |
