Politics / The Nigerian Civil War, The Cause And How It Ended by Spynaija: 11:48am On May 23, 2019
The Nigerian Civil War, started on 6th July 1967 and ended on 15th January 1970, the war was an ethnically based oil war fought between the government of Nigeria and the secessionist state of Biafra, which led to millions of lives lost , mostly of starvation.

Biafra represented nationalist aspirations of the Biafran people, whose leadership felt they could no longer coexist with the Northern-dominated nigerian federal government. The war resulted from political, economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions which preceded Britain’s formal decolonization of Nigeria from 1960 to 1963. The UK and the Soviet Union were the main supporters of the Nigerian government, while France, Israel and some other countries supported Biafra.

The Nigerian troops surrounded Biafra within a year, capturing the coastal oil facilities and the city of Port Harcourt. Within the two and half years of the war, there were about 100,000 overall military casualties, while between 500,000 and 2 million Biafran civilians died of starvation.

War
Shortly after extending its blockade to include oil, the Nigerian government launched a “police action” to retake the secessionist territory. The war started on the early hours of 6 July 1967 when the Nigerian troops advanced in two columns into Biafra. The Biafra strategy had succeeded. The Nigerian government started the war, the East defended itself. The Nigerian Army offensive was through the north of Biafra led by Colonel Mohammed Shuwa and the local military units were formed as the 1st Infantry Division. The division was led mostly by northern officers. After facing unexpectedly fierce resistance and high casualties, the right-hand Nigerian column advanced on the town of Nsukka, which fail on 14 July, while the left-hand column made for Garkem, which was captured on 12 July.

Cause of the war
The Immediate causes of the war in 1966 included ethno-religious riots in the Northern Nigeria, a military coup, a counter-coup and the persecution of Igbo’s living in Northern Nigeria. also, Control over the lucrative oil production in the Niger Delta played a vital role, but the primary cause, as reflected in a statement made by the Igbo Eastern Military Governor, Lieutenant Colonel Chukuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, was inter-ethnic domination, as he was quoted to have said “The brutal and planned annihilation of officers of Eastern Nigeria origin had cast serious doubt as to whether they could ever sincerely live together as members of a nation”

End Of The War

With increased British support, the Nigerian federal forces launched their final offensive against the Biafrans once again on 23 December 1969, with a major thrust by the 3rd Marine Commando Division. The division was commanded by Col. Olusegun Obasanjo, which succeeded in splitting the Biafran enclave into two by the end of the year. The final Nigerian offensive, named “Operation Tail-Wind”, was launched on 7 January 1970 with the 3rd Marine Commando Division attacking, and supported by the 1st Infantry division to the north and the 2nd Infantry division to the south. The Biafran towns of Owerri fell on 9 January, and Uli on 11 January. Only a few days earlier, Col. Chuckwuemeka Ojukwu fled into exile by plane to Ivory Coast, leaving his deputy Philip Effiong to handle the details of the surrender to General Yakubu Gowon of the Nigerian Federal Army on 13 January 1970. The surrender paper was signed on 14 January 1970 in Lagos and thus came the end of the civil war and renunciation of secession.
Fighting ended a few days later, with the Nigerian forces advancing into the remaining Biafran-held territories, which was met with little resistance.

When the war ended Gen. Gowon said, “The tragic chapter of violence is just ended. We are at the dawn of national reconciliation. Once again we have an opportunity to build a new nation. My dear compatriots, we must pay homage to the fallen, to the heroes who have made the supreme sacrifice that we may be able to build a nation, great in justice, fair trade, and industry.”

You should expect the company you join to provide these tools as well as some sort of training on how to sell their products. Focus on what you know you are good at first. Once you learn how to promote it on the Internet successfully, then move on to diverse products. Don’t jump around, maintain your standards at all times.

Persistency and Patience
This is very essential for your success. It is offen said that, Rome was not built in one day. Don’t give up too soon. Success never happens over night YES I’m not gonna sugarcoat nothing here. You must understand and master the criteria for marketing. It’s never a make money quick system. Just keep in mind that it may take a while to see profit. You have to do series of promotions, One of the suggestions is that you’ll make it faster if you have your own website for your affiliate business. You just need to walk extra miles cos, success doesn’t come as a surprise rather as a result of series of trials and failures, there is no magical method. If you do not have persistent patience, it is hard to succeed. Trust yourself. You can fight doubt with determination, and fight confusion with concentration. Never quit too soon before success! If you adhere to the above suggestions, you’ll be on your way to success on the internet!

Education / How To Criticize Constructively And Nicely by Spynaija: 1:45pm On May 03, 2019

Merriam Webster Dictionary defines “criticism” as “a critical observation or remark, the act of criticizing usually unfavourably”. Have you ever had an experience when someone told you how fat you’ve suddenly become? Or Maybe your boss had commented on how bad your work turned out to be?. Maybe you’ve heard from other folks how people view you as proud and unapproachable type?

It Hurts, doesn’t it?

Believe it or not, some people can be so undiplomatic that they are not even aware when they’ve hurt anyone’s feelings, that’s the receiving parties, especially the sensitive ones, they’ll be offended by their remarks, of which can eventually result in conflicts and arguments.

Your primary thoughts might be to help them maybe keep their lifestyle or health on check, but would they realize your good intentions instead of feeling hurt by your blunt comments or remark?

They might probably think you’re impolite. But what can you do if you really need to profess an honest criticism, but you’re afraid of hurting others’ feelings?

Now Here’s the secret

All you have to do is sandwich your negative comment between two positive remarks.
For example, your best friend Bassey is going on his very first date. He’s all excited and desirous to go. You know Bassey doesn’t have any fashion sense. He’s wearing a bland shirt with an old jeans. You know quite well how he hates to admit faults. So what will you do to save Bassey from an embarrassing first date?

Would you say out-rightly to him that the outfit he’s wearing is appalling? That would hurt his ego.

Well, you can first commend him on the things you like in his overall appearance. Comment on his well-groomed hair. Ask him where he bought his perfume because it can literally attract women like bees to honey. Be very sincere and honest.

Then, insert in a nice and suave approach your point of view and advice. You can tell him something like:

“Your shirt looks very nice Bassey, Since this is your very first date, I think Beky (his date) will be much more impressed if you would wear something like the outfit that you wore on my birthday. You look irresistible when you put on clothes like that.”

Afterwards, make another positive statement. You could say something like:

“You would definitely portray a big impression on Beky. She would fall heads over heels over your nice appearance and cheery personality. Have a great time on your date, Bassey.”

Do you think Bassey would be offended by such a nice comments? You have wittingly inserted a slightly negative feedback into a plethora of acceptable and ego-boosting remarks.

Generally, People love compliments, They believe they’ve got the caliber. They want other people to magnify the abilities they believe to possess. People like to hear others talk about their greatness and qualities, and they’ll be very glad if other people would know about it.

So if you intend to criticize anybody, remember to laud him/her first. It will leave a positive impression that you’re a nice guy. Then say what you have to say, but in a nice and non-offensive approach. Finalize with another positive remark to set a pace for amity.

Family / 7 Ways To Boost Your Child's Self Esteem by Spynaija: 2:00am On Apr 21, 2019

For all children, self-esteem is an essential attribute to have. As a parent, you can help improve the self-esteem of your child by following the steps below:

Be a Good Example: convey that you respect yourself by your acts and words. Kids are amazing at imitating what they see and hear. Note, you are the best role model for your kids.

Build positive habits: To help them feel comfortable and competent, young children need habits. Try to develop a good bedtime routine, rest/naps, meals, etc. If / when they arise, keep deviations to the routine to a minimum and clarify any required adjustments.

Assign Roles: Give your ward a job/chore for the family that only he/she does. Even a small job can have a lasting positive effect on the self-esteem of your child.

Positivity Talk at all times: While there is negativity in the world, with your children, don't dwell on it. Be sure to point out the many good things in the world while with your kids.

Spend time with your kids: It's more important to consider quality than quantity. Even if you spend just 30 minutes on one with your kids, playing sports, walking, having long talks at bedtime, or just snuggling in front of the TV, spending time with your kids shows them that you appreciate their company.

Offer your child choices: Offering your child choices that are already predetermined by a fine collection of options can help them feel motivated.

Don't try to force things on your children: Yes, this is important, even though our parents are responsible for this, when growing up in the 80s and 90s, they forced things on us. Children of this era are born smart to know what they want to wear, eat, the toys they would like, etc., enabling them to go after what they want to boast of their self-esteem. We're in an era where modernization has overrun the world.
