“It’s all bad belle people, they think there may be bad news and when you don’t give them that news they start to create it because bad news sells more than good news. First of all, there was no twitter fight, people go online and use photoshop to create my profile and then they go and create Wizkid’s profile and say he said this and that – even when it never happened. What happened is that we have been working on Wizzy’s project to make it work internationally and when you are getting to that level, things change.” These were said by the EME big shot when he was in Dubai for Tuface Idibia’s wedding. Banky further said that all the tweets about his fight with the young talent were all fabricated. “He has his own idea of what he wants to do and we are in 100% support of that and these were the things we dreamed of back in 2009 when I signed him….Wizkid is still signed to the E.M.E!!!” he said. On Wizkid’s Starboy Entertainment that he just floated, he has this to say, “well you know that is something else he wants to do, he wants to start his record label just like I started mine then and see where I am today. You have a lot of people fabricating stuff and trying to make it feel like there is a battle and you know we don’t believe in that…we are all mature and grown up people…he is absolutely and still part of the family…” When asked “how does it work for him to have star boy entertainment and still be part of E.M.E” he said, “I would give you a fantastic example, Kanye West has GOOD MUSIC and he is still with Rock Nation, ROCKAFELLA…I rest my case” http://247nigerianewsupdate.com/banky-w-finally-clears-the-air-on-his-relationship-with-wizkid/

BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN DESIGNERS AND CLIENTS April 2, 2013 3:01 pm Designers and clients are often at loggerheadswhen it comes to the final presentation of a project; be it the usual logo, banner or web design, the following scenarios could lead to the crop up of varying issues; 1) Little or no involvement from the clients at the initial stage 2) Inadequate research on the designer’s part 3) No information from the clients 4) Poor passing of Information from the designer to the client. 5) Clients not being sure of what they want 6) Designers being typically money-oriented 7) No concept behind the design No two clients are the same.9) No official agreement 10) Middle Man involvement Now I will take time to explain all. We start from the very first Little or no involvement from the clients in the initial stage When it comes to web or logo design, clients don’t want to be involved in the design either at the initial stage or latter. stages; they want to be shown samples to select from. This causes a big headache since the designer can’t know what exactly the client wants hereby leading to a high percentage of rejection of initial designs; this can be very time-consuming. Most times the designer has to “pull a rabbit out the hat“ to get what the client wants. Inadequate research on the designer’s part Most times, designers rely on their creativity only for the execution of the project. Sometimes it is not enough, and instead of doing more research on what he needs to do to get the client satisfied, he complains that the client is merely wasting his time. We live in a world where things are being developed and discovered every day, trends come and go and if we don’t carry out research, we get left behind. No information from the clients Apart from the name of the company, no other information is given to the designer. The color combination, the desired fonts – whether it will be type-phase or with an emblem – for logo creation, or the website transition or animation. When it comes to web design, no picture is made available, or picture description given, and the designer is told to “come up with something” Poor passing of Information from the designer to the client. In the attempt to get a client, some designers promise the world and in the end they mess up;some designers are not familiar with the printing environment and that is why most of the designs that are made can’t be executed properly. So not telling them earlier will alwaysresult to conflicts. Clients not being sure of what they want . Most clients – due to no fault of theirs – have no idea of what they want and it is until he or she is shown something. They just want something “fine”. A reason for this is that clients aren’t mostly novices in the field and they expect the designer (as the expert) to ‘wow’ them. This isn’t meant to be case as it is the designer’s responsibility to ensure that they meet at a neutral ground and ensure the work flows smoothly. Designers being typically money-oriented Designers these days have really destroyed themarket. Most learn how to design only to get money. They don’t care about the quality of their works. Their mentality is that “The amount you pay will determine your design”. Money should never determine the quality of your work. If you are doing it for free or at a cheap price, your designs should speak for you. No concept behind the design Nowadays, you will see some designs and wonder if there is any story behind it. Does it really have anything to do with what the company is about? We have gone past the stage of “just anything” or”something fine”. But some people are still living in the past. No two clients are the same Some designers feel that because he did something similar for the first client that he may be able to get away with tweaking the design a bit for the other client. Most times, things don’t work like we expect. No official agreement This is the main problem. There is no duration stated for the project to be concluded, so most jobs go on and on and on. Some go on for weeks, months. The mode of payment and the terms and conditions should be stated properly and both parties agree Middle Man involvement Dealing with a middle man can be problematic because there are some things the original client might say that the middle man could leave out. Most times, it is advisable to have direct contact with the client as the middle man is probably interested in making money. This brings us to the end of this post. And before I forget, Quadclover will be designing logos – FOR FREE – from now till the end of April for the first set of people that send in theirdetails. <<<He was Interviewed by i2sabi.com, am sure we will all learn something from this>>> Its My pleasure to introduce our new featured column; ‘Sabi People’ .It is designed to feature remarkable and outstanding people who have distinguished themselves through excellence in their craft, skill or profession. To Kick things off, I had an interesting chat with Tola Alabi, one of Naija’s foremost and very talented Brand and Graphic designer. His work shows that he clearly stands head and shoulders above the average Digital artist. He gives us a little insight into his craft and experience in the creative Industry. #Be inspired! i2sabi: Please start by telling us a little about yourself, Describe yourself, Are you a self taught designer or did you go to a school of design? Tola: My name is Adetola Alabi. I am a Nigerian brand and graphic designer. I have always been considered artistic, but I do have formal education in design. I studied Architecture for my undergrad, and Computer Interactive Multimedia for my post-grad. i2sabi: Did you always know you would be a graphic designer or did you have other aspirations? Tola: No, not at all. I never knew graphic design could even be considered a career path till I was 22. I had always seen it as a hobby. Before I discoverd this, I had childhood aspirations of becoming a policeman, at a time, a doctor, and then, an architect. i2sabi: A lot of people believe you to be one of the very best designers in Naija creative industry. How would you describe your design process? Tola: My design process is pretty diverse depending on what I am working on. If I am working on personal art work, the process is: I start out with a message I want to communicate, then source for images and the best words to pass across that message, and lastly, figure out the software to use in executing it digitally. If I am creating a brand identity ,however, I start out meeting with the client and getting as much information as possible from them about the brand values, colour preferences etc. I don’t usually sketch, so most times, I joggle ideas on the computer, then develop one design I consider the best solution. I’m not big on presenting four or five design options, as most designers do. i2sabi: What are your favorite tools in your design arsenal? Tola: My favorite tools are Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Picasa. Well, they are my only tools, so you could say I have a pretty small arsenal. i2sabi: In your own opinion, what would you say is the Key to great design? Tola: A good idea well-executed and beautifully-presented equals great design. i2sabi: What is the most rewarding part of what you do? Tola: The most rewarding part of my job, by far, is having someone say they were inspired or influenced by my work. i2sabi: What challenges did you face when you first started? How did you overcome them? Do they still exist? Tola: I think the biggest challenge lies within the design industry itself. The challenge of professionalism in the Nigerian creative industry is a particularly hard one – as anyone that has a copy of Corel Draw /Photoshop, or goes for a 3-week computer appreciation course can print out a business card as a graphic designer. Hence, the barrage of mediocre jobs floating out there. This poses a challenge on two levels; firstly, people tend to take graphic designers less seriously and under-pay us because it takes little or nothing to get into the industry. Secondly, it has become particularly hard to find inspiration as a designer from your immediate environment, as you don’t get to see too many industry-standard jobs. Even those done by the big Nigerian ad agencies still fall short of world-class standards. i2sabi: What would you say is the most effective way for upcomers in the creative industry to market their skills? What works for you? Tola: I think online marketing is very strong. I personally make use of online resources, such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and my personal site. I would advise creatives to market less on design sites like Behance or Advance Photoshop, and use more open-ended social networking sites where they could connect with potential clients outside the design industry. i2sabi: Which of your designs would you say is your all time favorite? Tola: I created a personal art work about 4 years ago, called ‘Know Yourself and Blossom’. I would say that is my favourite so far. Simply because it addresses the issue of self-discovery as a key path to fulfillment and happiness, which is a topic I am very passionate about. i2sabi: What advice would you give start-ups and individuals when conceiving a visual identity for their brands Tola: Keep the concept simple. Remember your visual identity cannot convey everything about your brand, so do not try to throw in everything into the design. The idea is to say what is most important. i2sabi: If you could go back in time to when you first started, what advice would you give yourself Tola: Enjoy what you do, and don’t get distracted by worries about the future. Everything would work out just fine.

It is a fact of our health that only the common cold strikes more than chronic back pain. For many of us back pain is caused by simple mechanics of our spine such as a muscle or a joint. While it might be quiet painful, most backproblems are not serious and very easily treatable. Sometimes our pain occurs in all age groups, but as we grow older we become less active and pain becomes more evident. Here are some things you can do to prevent recurring pain or sometimes called chronic backpain. Stay Active: In our bodies, the spine was meant for motion. In fact movement of the spine is required by our bodies for healthy disks. Remember our disks are the so-called "shock absorbers of our vertebrae". Because our spinal disks have no blood supply, movement is required to lubricatethese disks. Movement promotes strength and keeps our spine healthy. Eat Healthy: Stay away from processed foods, mainly fatty foods. These foods cause inflammation in our bodies which can lead to pain. Eat fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to promote a healthy back and overall health. Keep Positive: If chronic back pain occurs, remain positive. Prevent depression and don't think you need to spend days in bed. Inactivity, will only make it worse, you need to move. Lift Properly: You need to take the weight off your back whenlifting, especially heavy items. Lift with your knees and legs, bend and cradle the item you are lifting, and listen, don't be afraid to ask for help when lifting a heavy object. Many macho men have hurt their back lifting wrong. See a Chiropractor: Sometimes another condition could be causing your chronic pain. If you experience reoccurring pain then you might need to see a chiropractor. He can readjust your spine and also offer treatment plans to help prevent further problems associated with your back problems. share with friends and family

A technique to implant donor DNA from a third party into in vitro embryos has been approved by the British Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA). The technique is a form of “germline” alteration that involves modification of the person’s mitochondrial DNA(MDNA) to create genetic changes that will be carried on throughout subsequent generations. The recommendation to allow the technique follows a public consultation ordered by the government in which the HFEA said they found “broad support”. The report said that the potential benefits outweighed the risks and that there is no evidence that the procedure is unsafe. The HFEA report said that it should onlybe used to avoid “serious diseases” and that clinics offering the technique must be licensed. It also recommended that the children created using this genetic alteration technique be monitored. The HFEA has already granted individual researchers licenses to conduct human cloning experiments that would create embryos from three parents . In 2005, the body allowed an experiment in which embryos were created from the combined ova of two women with the sperm from a single father, also in an attempt to treat mitochondrial genetic diseases. The report has been passed on to ministers who will consider whether to bring forward legislation. The HFEA is known to be among the most permissive national regulatorybodies in the world, having been the first to approve human/animal hybrid cloning experiments, eugenic screening procedures, sexselection and the creation of designer “ saviour sibling ” embryos to be used as tissue sources for gene therapy for existing children. Under existing HFEA licenses, embryos in Britain can be “screened” for cosmetic traits such as eye colour. In a letter to the Times a group of ethicists raised concerns about the proposal to allow the technique, and over the legal implications for future proposals. “We believe the benefits to a small number of parents are heavily outweighed by the risks to the child and to society,” they wrote. “This would be the first instance of regulatory approval for modification of the human germ line. There is a long-standing international consensus that we should not cross this ethical line, since it is likely to lead to a future of genetically modified ‘designer’ babies.” In a separate letter, to the Guardian newspaper, 13 physicians warned that such rules “risk dehumanising and commodifying relationships between children and their parents.” “It would be the first time such intentional genetic modifications of children and their descendantswere expressly permitted and would open the door to further genetic alterations of human beings with unforeseeable consequences.” Andrea Williams, CEO of the legal campaign group Christian Concern, said, “The possibility of having children with same-sex biological parents carries serious ethical implications and emotional risks for children which have not been adequately considered by the HFEA. “These proposals ultimately encourage a eugenic attitude and pave the way for the genetic modification of children, with all its resultant consequences. Any alterations to the human genome will be permanent, and unexpected genetics problems will be passed down to future generations.” http://www.lifesitenews.com/mobile/news/uk-govt-given-go-ahead-for-three-parent-genetically-altered-embryos |
