Crime / Lagos Teenage Factory Worker Killed In Industrial Accident On Resumption Day by Sskynet: 9:19am On May 20, 2021
Seventeen-year-old Babatunde Abdulrahmon has succumbed to the injuries he sustained on the day he resumed work as a mixer at a manufacturing company, Mingyi Trading Company Limited, Satellite Town, Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the teenager, who went to the company in search of work, was introduced to the manager, Uchenna Umeanna, who put him under a supervisor.

The supervisor, Abdulrahmon and other members of staff were busy in the factory when a power outage suddenly occurred.

In a bid to continue production, a worker in the company was said to have quickly switched on the generator, and as the mixing machine began working,

Abdulrahmon, who was close to it, was unfortunately sucked into the mixer.

Umeanna told PUNCH Metro that Abdulrahmon sustained severe injuries in his body and legs, adding that efforts by doctors to save him at a nearby hospital proved abortive.

The manager said, “It was an unfortunate incident. Abdulrahmon came looking for a job and I personally took him to the supervisor to teach him the job. After some hours, I suddenly heard screams and I rushed down to the factory.

“When I got there, he was inside the mixer and we had to bring him out. What happened was that the supervisor was teaching him how to scrape the particles of the PVC material on the mixing machine.

“According to the supervisor, a power outage suddenly occurred and another worker switched on the generator, and Abdulrahmon, who was close to the mixing machine, was suddenly sucked into it.

“We quickly switched off the generator and pulled him out, but his legs were injured and when we rushed him to hospital, they said he had internal injuries and was bleeding.”

Umeanna stated that he reported the incident to the police, who detained him and two of the workers, adding that family members of the deceased were also informed about the accident.

He said, “The doctors were trying to resuscitate him and after about 20 minutes, we lost him. I informed the police about the incident and the matter was transferred to another station in Agboju, where two of the workers and I were detained.

“Before then, I had sent someone to search for his family and they also came to the station. The DPO assigned policemen to investigate the case and we all came to the scene of the accident with his family members.

“With the assistance of some of the family members and community leaders, we were able to resolve the issue with the family, who said they didn’t want to press any charge.

“So, Abdulrahmon’s remains were deposited in the morgue and the following day, we had a discussion with the family and he was buried. The firm bore the entire burial expenses. I had to tag the machine as dangerous, because it costs someone’s life.”

When contacted, Abdulrahmon’s brother, Sodeeq Aderonmu, said, “I can’t do anything without the consent of the family members. I have contacted our dad and he said since we have settled the case with the representatives of the company, there is no need for us to say anything on it.

“The case was handled by our lawyer, but the advice we got was that if we proceeded with a case, we would not have buried him, because his corpse would still be in the mortuary. He died young and as a Muslim, he was buried immediately.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, described the circumstances surrounding Abdulrahmon’s death as sudden and unnatural.

He stated, “One Aderonmu Sodeeq reported at the Satellite Division on Wednesday, May 12, 2021, that his younger brother, Babatunde Abdulrahmon, 17, went out the previous day to work at the Mingyi Trading Company Limited as a factory worker.

“He said the manager of the company, Uchenna Umeanna, informed him that his younger brother had a factory accident while working on one of the machines.

“As a result, he sustained severe injuries on his body and he was rushed to the Navy Referral Hospital in Satellite Town for treatment, but he was later pronounced dead by a medical doctor. An investigation is ongoing.”

Travel / NIS Threatens Sanctions Against Officials Over Passport Crisis by Sskynet: 2:36pm On May 19, 2021
The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Muhammed Babandede, on Tuesday said the turnaround time for issuance of passports is now six weeks.

The service’s Public Relations Officer, Sunday James, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists.

James quoted Babandede as saying this at the NIS headquarters in Abuja during a media chat on Innovations and Administration for Ease in Passport Issuance and Processing following the decoration of 87 newly-promoted Assistant Comptrollers-General and Comptrollers of Immigration Service.

The statement was titled, ‘NIS promotes senior officers’.

The statement quoted Bandede as saying that, “With effect from June 1, 2021, the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has directed that the issuance of passports to Nigerians will take a period of six weeks during which applicants must resolve their concerns with the passport office and the office must resolve their concerns with applicants.

“If you submit an incomplete documentation, you will receive a text message asking you to come and rectify the issues. Immediately you correct your documentation, the six weeks starts.

“When you apply, you wait for six weeks and you will get your passport. If you don’t get it, hold us responsible.

“If any passport officer fails to contact an applicant and the passport is not issued after the stipulated time, disciplinary measures will be taken against that officer.”

Speaking on the recent halt in new applications for passports, the Comptroller-General said, “All passport applications all over the country are hereby closed between May 18 and May 31, 2021.”

This suspension of receiving and processing of fresh passport applications, he said, was to allow for clearance of all applications that were received before May 17, 2021, adding that a task force supervised by ACGs, would be sent to passport offices to clear the backlog.

Babandede said, “So, there will be no operations at the passport office from today until May 31. We will use this period to clear the backlogs of passports yet unissued.

“Deputy comptrollers-general have been assigned to take direct charge of some selected passport policies. So, there will be no rush or favouritism.

“Payment portals have been closed locally from midnight today. Payments as from June 1, 2021 will be purely online.

“I have assigned the Provost Marshall to ensure that no cash is paid to the passport office. That office will be used for production only.

“We used the Sallah holidays to do a lot of work. No passport officer went on holidays. We have now sent text messages to Nigerians whose passports are ready.

On the reissuance of passports, Babandede added that, “Applicants can come for the reissuance of their passports from June 1, 2021; six months before their passport validity elapses.

“This means that as soon as your passport has reached six months before it expires, you have the right to come for another one.

“We have improved it from three months to six months. This will solve the challenges we have been facing with reissuing passports. Also, the public must know that we no longer take cash here.

“When you apply you wait for six weeks and you will get your passport. Collection of passports will be based on appointment. You don’t need to call any officer because appointment will be online. It’s our commitment to Nigerians.”

Travel / Aero’s Aircraft Grounded After Bird Strike, Says NCAA by Sskynet: 12:11pm On May 19, 2021
Aero Contractors’ aircraft, Boeing 737-500 with registration number 5N-BKR, has been grounded for repairs in Port Harcourt after a bird strike.

Our correspondent gathered that the Abuja-bound flight returned to Port Harcourt after one of the engines got hit by a bird on Monday, few minutes after take-off.

The Director-General, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Captain Musa Nuhu, confirmed the incident in an interview with our correspondent.

According to him, the pilot followed the due procedures when an airborne aircraft is struck by a bird and landed the plane safely.

He, however, said the aircraft had been grounded for repairs due to the damage caused by the bird strike.

An official of the airline who spoke on condition of anonymity said the bird strike had cost the company a lot of money following the grounding and subsequent maintenance efforts.

The official said the airline had a good flight record and was always ready to comply with the NCAA’s directives.

Business / Bitcoin Tumbles Below $40,000 After China Issues Warning by Sskynet: 9:34am On May 19, 2021
Bitcoin plunged below $40,000 for the first time in more than three months Wednesday after China said cryptocurrencies would not be allowed in transactions and warned investors against speculative trading in them.

The comments sent the unit diving more than 10 per cent and dealt it another blow soon after being battered by comments from tycoon Elon Musk and his Tesla car company.

Trading in cryptocurrencies has been banned in China since 2019 to prevent money laundering as leaders try to stop people from shifting cash overseas. The country had been home to around 90 per cent of the global trade in the sector.

And in a statement, three state-backed industry associations — the National Internet Finance Association of China, the China Banking Association and the Payment and Clearing Association of China — said “cryptocurrency prices have skyrocketed and plummeted, and cryptocurrency trading speculation activities have rebounded”.

The price fluctuations “seriously violate people’s asset safety and disrupt normal economic and financial order”, said the statement, which was posted to social media by the People’s Bank of China.

The notice warned consumers against wild speculation, adding that the “losses caused by investment transactions are borne by the consumers themselves”, since Chinese law offers no protection to them.

It reiterated that providing cryptocurrency services to customers and crypto-based financial products was illegal for Chinese financial institutions and payment providers.

Bitcoin tumbled Wednesday from $45,600 to $39,240, its lowest since early February, and well off the record high of $64,870 seen as recently as last month. Analysts have warned it could go down as far as $30,000.

“This is the latest chapter of China tightening the noose around crypto,” Antoni Trenchev, managing partner and co-founder of London-based crypto lender Nexo, said.

And Adam Reynolds, of Saxo Markets, added: “It’s no surprise to me, as Chinese capital controls can be challenged by cryptocurrency purchases in the country and transfers out of the country.

“So avoiding the use of them in the country is essential to maintaining capital controls.”

Bitcoin has had a torrid few days. It took a heavy hit at the start of the week after Musk appeared to suggest Tesla was planning to sell its huge holdings of the unit. And that came days after the electric car giant said it would halt using it in transactions because of environmental concerns.

China is in the midst of a wide-ranging regulatory crackdown on its fintech sector, whose biggest players — including Alibaba and Tencent — have been hit with big fines after being found guilty of monopolistic practices.

The central bank has also sought to promote its own heavily regulated digital yuan, which it is testing across the country in pilot schemes.

Consumers already widely use mobile and online payments, but the digital yuan could allow the central bank — rather than the big tech giants — greater data and control overpayments.
