A male elephant named Boonchuay, that lives in Thailand’s Kaeng Krachan national park, literally crashed through a neighbor’s kitchen Saturday morning in search of a meal, The Guardian reports.

His unwitting host was Ratchadawan Puengprasoppon, who was awakened by her unexpected guest. Boonchuay, who put his head through a wall and used his trunk to toss kitchen drawers and knock cooking equipment onto the floor, reportedly did more than $1,500 in damage during a previous visit.

Park superintendent Itthipon Thaimonkol said elephants like to visit area homes to see what’s cooking when local cuisine may be on the menu.

“They always come when there is the local market because they can smell food,” he told The Guardian.

Hunter College psychology instructor Dr. Joshua Plotnik said there are parts of Thailand, which he studies, where pachyderms go through farmers’ gardens every night in search of corn or sugarcane.

“This is a really difficult issue for both the farmers and the elephants,” he said.
