PoliticsEdo LG: Probe Report Uncovers Massive Fraud In ALGON Account by State001(op): 6:08pm On Feb 17, 2025
Investigation has uncovered massive financial mismanagement within the Edo State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), implicating several individuals, including the impeached chairman of Orhionmwon Local Government Council and former ALGON Edo chairman, Newman Ugiagbe.

A statement of account (financial statement), covering transactions from September 2023 to September 2024, reveals several transactions involving large, unexplained cash transfers to various entities, including a hotel linked to the former ALGON chairman.

One of the most striking transactions listed on the first page of the statement is a N40 million transfer on March 20, 2024, to one Imasogie Dickson Notiemwenmwan, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain via Skye Bank (now Polaris Bank). The purpose of this transaction remains unclear.

Additionally, a series of payments totaling millions of naira were made to Demarriot Hotel Limited, a hospitality business linked to Newman Ugiagbe. The repeated transactions to this establishment raise concerns about possible money laundering or misappropriation of public funds.

Other large disbursements include:
* N9 million to the National Council for Women Society (March 18, 2024)
* N6 million to an individual named Abadonis Enghonmwanyeke (March 15, 2024)
* N5 million to Imasetoba Johnbull and Company (March 20, 2024)
* N30 million to Nosama Pharmacy and Stores Ltd (March 21, 2024)
* N60 million to Demarriot Hotel Limited (March 22, 2024)

These transactions, coupled with excessive NIBSS Instant Payment (NIP) charges and Value Added Tax (VAT) deductions, suggest a systematic siphoning of public funds by ALGON under Newman Ugiagbe.

Following the suspension and subsequent impeachment of the 18 local government council chairpersons in Edo state, investigators have intensified scrutiny into their tenure. Sources suggest that some of the funds may have been laundered through shell companies. A shell company is an inactive company used as a vehicle for various financial manoeuvres.

Only yesterday, the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, revealed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will prosecute some of the impeached council chairmen indicted for looting the Local Government treasuries, running into over N96 billions.

Governor Okpebholo made this revelation when he received the report of the Administrative Panel of Enquiry set up on the 18th of December, 2024 to investigate the financial dealings of the impeached 18 Local Government Chairmen in Edo State from 4th September, 2023 to November, 2024.

Besides the impeached Local Government Chairmen who were indicted by the report, former governor Godwin Obaseki, leaders of the factional Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), among others, were also fingered, according to a statement by Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Fred Itua.

Expressing satisfaction with the committee for the professionalism with which it carried out its duty, Governor Okpebholo said, the days of financial recklessness and lack of transparency in public office were long over, as “Nigerians need to start demanding accountability from elected public office holders”, stressing that “it was the only way to fight corruption and ensure development.”

Governor Okpebholo, while expressing dismay at the findings of the report that implicated the impeached 18 Local Government Chairmen, vowed to petition the EFCC on the findings of the report for immediate prosecution.

Chairman of the panel, Barr. Solomon Imohiosen, while submitting its report and recommendations to Governor Okpebholo, noted that findings and forensic investigations uncovered that huge sums amounting to N96 billion was either mismanaged and/or diverted to private accounts.

The panel observed that N95 billion (N95,080,676,687.86) was received from the Joint Allocation Account Committee (JAAC) by the 18 Local Government Area Chairmen for the period investigated. It, however, reported that the funds were not judiciously utilized as no meaningful projects were on the ground to justify the amount received.

Confirming fraudulent diversion of Local Government funds to political godfathers in the State, the panel reported that over N10 (10,433 658,452.00) was fraudulently siphoned, using the psudo name, “Security, Environment and Training”, saying that the 18 Local Government Area Chairmen contributed to the account, using it as a conduit pipe to drain government resources, as money were transferred from there to various individuals and companies.

PoliticsShaibu Vs Omobayo: Edo State Takes Over Case, Disengage Lawyers by State001(op): 12:11pm On Jan 29, 2025
The hearing in the impersonation case against Marvellous Godwins Omobayo, immediate-past Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki’s appointed deputy by the immediate-past Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu has again been adjourned to 11th of March, 2025.

The adjournment followed the appearance of the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Samson Osagie who announced the disengagement of all the respondent(Omobayo)s’ counsel, Ken Mozia, SAN and others by the state government.

The AG told the court that since he assumed office for the past two months, nobody briefed him about the case, hence in his capacity as the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of the state, he has to take over the case.

It would be recalled that Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja last year declared null and void the alleged impeachment of Comrade Shaibu in his declarative judgement.

Refused access to his office as deputy governor by the then Governor Obaseki, Shaibu approached the court for contempt against Obaseki’s imposed deputy, Omobayo. First, with form 48 and later, form 49, which is contempt of court and impersonation as deputy governor of the state.

With this latest development, pundits believe that Omobayo may be heading to Kuje prison unless both parties reach for out of court settlement.

However, the case has been adjourned for hearing to 11th March, 2025.

And it begins….
PoliticsEdo Governorship Election Tribunal Relocates To Abuja by State001(op): 7:15pm On Jan 24, 2025
The Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal has announced its relocation from Benin City to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Although no reason was given for the relocation, METROWATCH reports that Tribunal has witnessed escalating security concerns arising from repeated attacks by political thugs.

In a notice dated January 24, 2025, and signed by the Tribunal Secretary, Mu’azu Ibrahim Bagudu, Esq., parties to the case were informed of the relocation.

The notice read in part: “I am directed to notify all parties that the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Benin City, Edo State, has been relocated to Abuja at the National Judicial Institute (NJI), Airport Road, Abuja, effective from Monday, 27th January, 2025.”

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, is challenging the victory of Governor Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the September 21, 2024 gubernatorial election.

Meanwhile, thugs had disrupted tribunal sessions on multiple occasions, creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity inside its High Court premises location.

In one incident, a lone gunman wearing a branded campaign T-shirt and fez cap, stormed a street adjacent to the Court, and chanting provocative slogans in support of the PDP and Ighodalo, firing sporadic shots into the air.

A legal practitioner representing the APC and Governor Okpebholo condemned the attacks as "a brazen attempt to undermine the rule of law and judicial independence."

Speaking under the condition of anonymity, the counsel noted that the intimidation tactics were designed to discourage the Tribunal from delivering an unbiased verdict.

“The PDP and its agents are resorting to violence because they know they have no strong case before the Tribunal. This is an affront to democracy,” he said.

Meanwhile, the PDP has denied any involvement in the attacks.

A spokesperson for the party described the allegations as "baseless and politically motivated," accusing the APC of attempting to divert attention from the substantive issues before the Tribunal.

PoliticsDrama At Edo Election Tribunal As PDP Witness Admits To Error In Statement by State001(op): 7:16pm On Jan 22, 2025
There was mid-drama on Wednesday at the ongoing Edo State 2024 Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Benin City, when one of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) witnesses told the court that he assented to his statement in error.

The witness, Mr. Destiny Enabulele, while under cross examination by the counsel to the respondents(APC, Monday Okpebholo), admitted to having erred in his statement as his claims did not reflect the documents submitted as they had claimed victory at the September 21, 2024 poll.

Contrary to the petition challenging the validity of the governorship election, Enabulele’s testament had appended his signature to the form validating the credibility of the election, thereby punching serious holes to his party’s case at the tribunal.

Similarly, another PDP witness, Moses Agbakur appealed to the Tribunal to disregard paragraph 13 and 14 in his earlier submitted statements, as they were also in error.

Objecting to the appeal, counsel to the 1st and 2nd Respondents, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Governor Monday Okpebholo respectively, prayed the Tribunal to disregard the PDP’s witness appeal to disregard paragraph 13 and 14 of his statements.

Mr. Agbakur under cross examination could not confirm the availability of his party’s agent at the polling units in the area in which he alleged that results were not signed, thereby throwing doubts on his assertion and authority.

In a rather bizarre development, Witness 3 for the petitioners (PDP, Asue Ighodalo), Mr. Babah Idenobenhe, who had also requested the Tribunal to expunge certain paragraphs of his earlier submitted statements as they were made in error, caused a stir in court, when he said on cross determination, that he relied on the documents personally generated by him in writing his statement of evidence.

His points were punctured by the respondent’s counsel, leaving the case watery and lacking substance.

The Tribunal, thereafter, adjourned until Thursday, January 23, 2025.

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has signed two significant bills into law, marking a new phase in the State’s Judiciary and oil sector governance.

The first bill raises the retirement age for magistrates in the State from 60 to 65 years, according to a statement on Wednesday by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor.

“This legislative move aims to enhance the efficiency and experience of the judiciary by allowing seasoned magistrates to serve longer, thereby improving the administration of justice in the State,” he said.

In another development, the Governor has assented to a bill that increases the number of members of the State’s oil agency.

“The expansion is expected to improve governance, representation, and operational efficiency within the agency, ensuring better management of the State’s oil resources and fostering economic growth,” Itua added.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening institutions that drive justice and economic development.

He emphasized that these legislative actions align with the State’s vision of enhancing judicial integrity and optimizing the benefits of its natural resources for the people of Edo State.

The newly-signed bills are expected to take immediate effect, with relevant stakeholders expressing optimism about their potential impacts on governance and service delivery in the State.

PoliticsEdo: Shaibu Griefs As Fire Razes Market In Jattu Hometown, Rallies Support by State001(op): 11:01am On Jan 22, 2025
Immediate-past Deputy Governor of Edo State, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, has expressed deep sorrow over the devastating fire that ravaged the Jattu Community Market in Etsako West Local Government Area, on Tuesday.

In a heartfelt post on his official Facebook page, Shaibu extended his sympathies to the traders and residents affected by the tragic incident, which has left the community reeling from significant losses.

The fire, which occurred on Tuesday night, came in the wake of another recent disaster—a windstorm that claimed lives and uprooted century-old trees in the Jattu-Uzairue Kingdom. The combination of these events has plunged the community into a state of mourning and devastation.

Describing the market as more than just a commercial hub, Shaibu, who hails from Jattu, acknowledged its cultural and economic importance, describing it “a symbol of our unity, hard work, and heritage.”

He acknowledged the unimaginable pain of the traders who lost their livelihoods and properties but commended their resilience amidst the repeated tragedies.

“As one of your own, I feel your sorrow deeply, and I am committed to standing with you in this difficult time,” Shaibu said. “This is not just a loss for the affected traders but for the entire Jattu-Uzairue Kingdom.”

The former Deputy Governor also called on well-meaning individuals, organizations, and leaders within and beyond the community to join hands in providing relief to the victims and supporting the rebuilding process.

He stressed the need for unity and solidarity to restore hope and rebuild what was lost. “Together, we can overcome this tragedy and emerge stronger,” he stated.

Shaibu prayed for comfort and strength for the grieving Jattu community while reaffirming his commitment to support the victims and efforts to rebuild the market.

PoliticsDrama As PDP, Ighodalo Witnesses Flounder At Edo Governorship Election Tribunal by State001(op): 6:40pm On Jan 21, 2025
The Edo State Governorship Election Tribunal witnessed a mild drama on Tuesday during the resumed hearing, when the first two petitioners’ witnesses in the case, EPT/ED/GOV/02/2024; Ighodalo Asuerinme & Anor flopped under examination.

The first petitioner’s witness (PW1), from Ikpoba okha local government area, had stunned the court when he testified that he was neither an agent at any of the polling units or wards nor directly involved in the election process.

Instead, he revealed that his role was limited to merely observing and personally examining the results in a “situation room”, raising serious questions about the accuracy and credibility of the evidence he presented.

The situation grew more dramatic with the testimony of the second petitioner’s witness (PW2) from Akoko-Edo local government area. PW2 claimed he was not a polling unit or ward agent but managed to coordinate all the results from 241 polling units and 10 wards in a single day.

His admission that he was not involved in the actual collation but only supervised and compiled reports from agents left many in the courtroom bewildered, raising doubts about the veracity of the evidence on which the petitioners were relying.

In a session led by the petitioners’ legal team, PW1 confirmed signing two statements on oath, dated October 11, 2024, and November 16, 2024, respectively. The witness further clarified that his involvement was limited to overseeing results at the situation room, which was not located at the collation center.

Under cross-examination, PW1 admitted that the sensitive Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) materials were not available for inspection in the situation room, casting further doubt on the integrity of the process he observed.

The drama continued as the respondents’ legal team vigorously cross-examined both witnesses, challenging the credibility of their testimonies and questioning the methods used to compile the election results.

In particular, PW1’s knowledge of the voter accreditation process was found to be lacking, and his failure to mention key documents like the IREV (Independent Results Viewing Portal) raised serious concerns.

Meanwhile, PW2’s testimony added to the uncertainty, as he revealed that although he coordinated results from all polling units and wards in his local government, he did not directly oversee the creation of the forms nor receive reports from agents.

His inability to distinguish between his own observations and those of the agents created doubts about the reliability of the evidence.

The tribunal proceedings are expected to continue as the legal teams for both petitioners and respondents prepare to examine more witnesses.

Politics2027 Presidency: Okpebholo Promises Tinubu 100% Votes In Edo by State001(op): 11:51pm On Jan 20, 2025
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his love for Edo people, assuring him of continued support ahead of the 2027 Presidential polls.

Governor Okpebholo gave the assurance in his goodwill message during a food outreach by the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), through its Social Investment Programme.

At the event which held at the New Festival Hall of Government House, Benin City, Edo State, Governor Okpebholo said the electorate in Edo State will give the President 100 percent of their votes in the 2027 presidential election for remembering the vulnerable in the State.

The RHI food outreach began on the 8th of March, 2024, and about seven States, including Edo, have benefited from the initiative so far. The other States include Kano, Benue, Nasarawa, Ekiti, Cross River, and Gombe, while States like Kwara, Kogi, and Abia are next in line.

Governor Okpebholo commended the First Lady of Nigeria and Chairperson of RHI, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her love and motherly role in ensuring that the people of Nigeria enjoy the dividends of democracy.

He noted that the initiative of the First Lady would not have been successful without the support of President Tinubu, assuring him that the people of Edo State will support him for a second term if and when he decides to run.

“The entire people of Edo State are very appreciative of this kind gesture of food outreach and donations of different food items to the vulnerable in Edo State.

“We are happy in Edo State, and the people are beginning to see and enjoy a new dawn. Look at food items all over the place in this hall, all thanks to the president and his wife for this great initiative that Edo people are benefitting from today.

“We are assuring you, Mr. President of our 100 percent votes in the State come 2027 presidential election, and if possible, we will give you more than 100 percent,” he declared.

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, recalled that the food outreach commenced in March 2024.

Represented by the wife of the Vice President, Hajia Nana Shettima, the First Lady said the initiative has made significant progress in supporting women and youths for the betterment of their lives.

She advised beneficiaries not to sell the food items but to make good use of them for the benefit of their families.

“This food outreach began last year in March 2024 in Abuja to provide vulnerable households with food to support their families. We have been able to distribute food items to seven states across Nigeria.

“The RHI has made significant progress in efforts to support our people, particularly women and youths, for a better life. Under this initiative, there will be more activities this year that cover Education, Health, Economic Empowerment, Social Investments and Agriculture. This programme aims to further compliment the renewed hope agenda of the President Tinubu administration,” she said.

Coordinator of the office of the First Lady of Edo State, Mrs Edesili Anani Okpebholo, thanked the First Lady for the initiative which in less than two years has touched the lives of millions of Nigerians, assuring that the vulnerable in the State will get the food items.

She also appreciated Governor Okpebholo for his developmental strides in less than three months in office. She noted that his support for the RHI programmes in the State has recorded great success. Items distributed included noodles, semovita, and pasta, among others.

Other guests at the food outreach included the Secretary to Edo State Government Musa Ikhilor; Deputy Chief of Staff, Pius Alile; Wife of former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Mrs Maryann Philip-Shaibu; leaders of market women; serving commissioners; political women leaders across the state; heads of security agencies in the state, Permanent Secretaries, several widows, among others.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State has condemned in the strongest possible terms Wednesday’s reported shooting incident within the venue of the Edo Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal in Benin City.

In a statement by Acting State Chairman of the APC, Emperor Jarret Tenebe, he described the incident reportedly involving members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as “a deeply disturbing and unacceptable act of violence.”

But, in a swift reaction, the PDP dissociated itself from the shooting incident, describing the “shameful incident” as “yet another in the series of clandestine efforts by the APC to frustrate the legal process and tarnish the image of our party.”

The PDP accused the ruling party of resorting to deploying thugs disguised in PDP-branded attire to disrupt the legal process, while pointing accusing fingers at the opposition party.

However, the APC insisted that: “The Tribunal is a sacred space where justice is meant to be administered impartially. Any act of violence within its walls undermines the very foundation of our legal system and threatens the safety of all involved.

“Regardless of political affiliation, resorting to violence to resolve disputes is never justifiable. We must all condemn such actions in the strongest possible terms.”

The APC noted that violence has no place in a civilized society, while calling for those responsible for the heinous to be brought to justice swiftly and without exception.

PoliticsNo Amount Of Gang-up Can Stop My Support For Okpebholo, Mayaki Replies Edo Govt by State001(op): 3:10pm On Jan 14, 2025
Previous thread >>> https://www.nairaland.com/8316576/john-mayaki-does-not-speak

A former Chief Press Secretary to former Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, Mr. John Mayaki, has reaffirmed his unflinching support for Governor Monday Okpebholo, saying, “no amount of scheming, opposition, or unfounded accusations will deter me”.

He said he has written opinion articles, authored news stories and written feature analysis on Edo state politics, the governor and the government and have never claimed to have been doing so on behalf of the governor.

Mayaki was responding to a statement on Tuesday by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Mr. Fred Itua, distancing the governor from Mayaki where he informed the public that Mayaki does not speak for Okpebholo.

Reacting, however, Mayaki said: “All my publications are done with my name on them, as either a farmer, a former CPS or any other title as I wish to bear and not as a government official”.

He added: “I quite understand the desperation fueling the gang-up from the crying Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who suffered a resounding defeat at the hands of Senator Monday Okpebholo. Their inability to accept the will of the people is understandable just as I also understand that when you beat a child, you cannot stop him or her from crying. The PDP can cry from now till eternity, but let me make one thing clear, there is no mandate for them to recover. None.

“As for those running from pillar to post, trembling at my support for the governor, thinking I have come to take food off their plates, you have missed the point entirely. My allegiance is rooted in a higher purpose and that is to see Edo state flourish under Governor Monday Okpebholo’s leadership – not a personal gain. I do not suport for rewards; I support for progress.

“And to those with a sense of entitlement to government appointments, here is my advice; disabuse yourselves of such delusions. Leadership is not an all-comer affairs, and not everyone will be appointed into government just as am not expecting any. Fighting against me or attempting to dissuade my support won’t secure you a spot. Governance is about service, not handouts.

“My commitment to Edo state saw me in the trenches for the last 8 years checkmating Governor Obaseki to ensure he does the right thing. It’s all about patriotism, not politics. Elections have come and gone, and it’s time for governance. Whether or not I cast my vote for the governor, my priority is to contribute to the growth of my state and add value to its leadership. What I stand for is simple: what can I do for Edo, not what can Edo do for me.

“Therefore, no amount of petty scheming or baseless attacks can sway me. My resolve is unshakable, my focus is also unyielding, and my dedication to Governor Monday Okpebholo’s leadership remains absolute. Let the PDP and their enablers brace themselves for more disappointment because nothing, absolutely nothing, will stop me”, Mayaki declared.

The Office of the Governor of Edo State says its attention has been drawn to “unauthorized statements” being issued by Mr. John Mayaki, a former Chief Press Secretary to the immediate-past Governor of the state, Mr. Godwin Obaseki.

According to Mr. Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to incumbent Governor Monday Okpebholo, “these unauthorized statements do not reflect the official position of the Governor’s Office on any matter and should be disregarded.”

“Mr. Mayaki, as a citizen of Nigeria, has the right to express his views on any matter. However, his personal views should not be attributed to Governor Okpebholo.”

“The Governor’s official spokespersons have been duly appointed and announced by Senator Monday
Okpebholo. They can be reached through their verified contact information,” Itua noted.

The statement advised members of the public to verify any information attributed to the Governor through official channels only.
