•UNIBEN, AAU take second and third places; Stakeholders commend initiative, advocate student-led security effortsThe National Institute of Construction Technology and Management (NICTM), Uromi, has emerged winner of the maiden edition of the inter-school quiz competition organized by the Joint Campus Council (JCC) of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Edo State Axis.
The intellectually charged competition, held on Friday at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, brought together top higher institutions across Edo State in a battle of wits, ideas, and academic depth, with the theme: “Safe Campus for Students: Combating Physical and Digital Threats.”
In a thrilling finale that ended in a tie between NICTM and the University of Benin (UNIBEN), the judges invoked a tie-breaker round to determine the winner. NICTM clinched the coveted first place, earning the grand prize of ₦300,000, while UNIBEN took the second position with a prize of ₦200,000. Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, came third and received ₦100,000.
Other participating institutions included Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi; Edo State Polytechnic, Usen; and the Federal College of Education (Technical), Ekiadolor. The event attracted a wide range of dignitaries, government representatives, security agencies, and student leaders from across the country.
The symposium featured a special keynote session delivered by the Acting Zonal Director of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Benin Zonal Directorate, Effa Okim represented by the anti-graft agency’s Head of Public Affairs, Williams Oseghale.
Speaking on the topic, “Use the Cyberspace Positively”, Oseghale, an Assistant Commander of the EFCC, admonished students to harness digital platforms for knowledge, entrepreneurship, and positive influence, rather than as tools for crime or deceit.
“You are the digital generation. Use that power responsibly,” he said. “The internet is not just a playground—it is a powerful tool. Choose to build, not destroy. Choose to enlighten, not exploit.”
Hon. Gani Akokhia, the Member representing Etsako West Constituency II at the Edo State House of Assembly and an alumnus of AAU, also graced the event. Representing the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, Hon. Akokhia applauded the students for their intellectual display, describing the event as a breath of fresh air in student politics.
“This competition is proof that our students are not just making noise—they are making sense. And as an alumnus of this great institution, I am proud to see this intellectual renaissance taking root right here on campus,” he said.
Also speaking, Comrade Jimah Mubarak, the Senior Special Assistant to the Edo State Governor on Student Matters, lauded the initiative, stating that student engagement is pivotal to building safer learning environments.
“Security is not just about gates and guards,” he noted. “It is about awareness, vigilance, and shared responsibility. Students are not mere beneficiaries of security—they are co-creators of it.”
He said Governor Monday Okpebholo remains firmly committed to securing educational spaces in the state. “His Excellency believes that evil must be rooted out from every layer of society, including our campuses,” he said.
“His SHINE agenda places premium value on youth empowerment, education, and security. But government can’t do it alone. Students must carry the torch,” SSA Mubarak concluded.
In his welcome address, Comrade Ojumoola Miracle Timileyin, Chairman of NANS JCC, Edo State Axis, expressed gratitude to all participants and stakeholders for their support in making the event a success.
“This is more than a competition—it is a movement,” he declared. “A movement of students who are ready to lead with their minds, not just their voices. Today, we proved that intellectual excellence can be the new protest.”
Comrade Timileyin explained that the idea behind the quiz competition was to create a platform where academic excellence, critical thinking, and constructive engagement could be celebrated and rewarded among Nigerian students.
“We believe that fostering a culture of scholarship and collaboration among students can combat many of the vices plaguing campuses today. This event was a call to elevate the standard of student unionism in Edo State,” he added.
The event drew praise from attendees, including the Acting Vice Chancellor of AAU, Professor Samuel Olowo, who congratulated the winning teams and encouraged the student leaders to continue pursuing excellence.
The NANS National President, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, represented by the NANS Zone B Coordinator, Comrade Micheal Iwara, also expressed pride in the NANS JCC Edo Axis for raising the bar of student activism.
“What happened in Ekpoma today is what we expect across campuses—smart leadership, meaningful engagement, and youth-driven development. The NANS of today must reflect the solutions Nigeria needs,” Comrade Iwara said.
Other notable attendees included NANS stakeholders from across zones, representatives of the National Association of University Students (NAUS), National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), and the National Association of Nigerian Colleges of Education Students (NANCES).
Highlight of the event was the decoration of the AAU Acting VC as a Patron of NANS by the Zonal Coordinator in recognition of his excellent relationship with students and in appreciation of his remarkable leadership style. The Edo NANS JCC equally presented a certificate of appreciation to the VC for his support and contribution towards the success of the program.
The event also witnessed presentation of awards and certificates of recognition to deserving guests, dignitaries, NANS stakeholders; and presentation of prizes to the winning institutions — NICTM, UNIBEN and AAU, Ekpoma, including consolation prizes. https://metrowatchonline.com/nans-organises-quiz-competition-for-edo-higher-institutions-as-nictm-emerges-champion/Lala Seun Mynd44

Education › Osasere Osifo Declares For UNIBEN North America Alumni President by State001(op): 12:08pm On Jun 10, 2025 |
By Ogochukwu IsiomaIn a vibrant declaration that has reverberated across the University of Benin alumni community in North America, Comrade Osasere Favour Osifo—the outgoing Vice President of the University of Benin Alumni Association North America (UBAANA)—has formally announced his candidacy for the presidency of the association.
With a proven record of transformative leadership, generous philanthropy, and unwavering commitment to his alma mater and fellow alumni, Osifo’s campaign signals a new era of unity, growth, and sustained impact for UNIBEN graduates in the diaspora.
Osifo’s journey of leadership began during his undergraduate years when he served as President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) at the University of Benin (UNIBEN). There, he championed transparency, academic excellence, and student welfare. Building on that legacy, he was elected Vice President of UBAANA in 2023, where he spearheaded critical initiatives aimed at deepening alumni engagement and strengthening ties between the North American alumni and the university.
Osifo brings with him a wealth of global experience in management and community-building. He pledges to channel this experience into visionary leadership for the entire UNIBEN alumni community. “Let’s build a stronger alumni network together. Vote for unity, vote for growth. Vote Osifo,” he said in a telephone interview with NEWSMAX.
Among his most celebrated initiatives is the Osasere Osifo Prize for Academic Excellence—a scholarship scheme that has awarded millions of naira to outstanding UNIBEN graduates. In its inaugural year, the prize awarded ₦250,000 to the overall Best Graduating Student. During the university’s recent 49th/50th combined convocation ceremonies, Osifo honoured six exceptional graduates with a total of ₦1,000,000 in cash prizes. These included the best graduating students for the 2021/22 and 2022/23 academic sessions, as well as the top performers from his alma mater’s Faculty of Physical Sciences and Department of Physics. This initiative reflects Osifo’s belief that “excellence is never accidental but the result of consistent effort, hard work, and determination.” Through these awards, he has not only celebrated academic brilliance but also inspired countless undergraduates to aim higher—relieving financial burdens and reinforcing a culture of achievement.
As Vice President of UBAANA, Osifo has consistently mobilized alumni resources to enhance UNIBEN’s infrastructure and promote student welfare. He has facilitated mentorship opportunities, expanded professional networks, and offered personal support to UNIBEN alumni across the globe.
He strongly believes that a united and empowered alumni network is essential—not only for personal advancement but also for amplifying UNIBEN’s global reputation.
Why North American Alumni Should Vote Osifo
• Tested and Trusted: Osifo has consistently delivered results—from SUG President to UBAANA VP. His leadership is grounded in experience, diplomacy, and reliability. • Visionary Leadership: He brings a clear, modern strategy to strengthen alumni engagement, ensuring UBAANA stays relevant in a digital era. • Proven Commitment: His philanthropy, alumni outreach, and project management reflect a deep and sustained dedication to UNIBEN and its graduates. • Global Experience: As a U.S. Air Force veteran, cybersecurity expert and trained engineer, Osifo has managed large-scale operations with discipline and precision, earning the trust of colleagues and alumni alike. • Unity and Growth Focus: He pledges to unify the association, deepen inter-chapter collaboration, foster mentoring across generations, and expand opportunities for alumni and students.
As the UBAANA election approaches, Osifo invites every University of Benin alumni in North America to participate in shaping the future of their association. His message is clear and inspiring: “Let’s build a stronger alumni network together. Vote for unity, vote for growth. Vote Osifo.”
With a legacy of academic philanthropy, strategic engagement, and principled leadership, Osifo makes a compelling case for UBAANA’s top office. His vision for the association is bold, inclusive, and focused on tangible progress.
From Georgia to Texas, California to the DMV, and beyond, alumni across the continent are encouraged to rally behind a leader whose actions match his words. Osifo offers more than ambition—he brings results, consistency, and a transformative agenda.
His candidacy represents not just continuity, but elevation. A vote for Osifo is a vote for a stronger, more united UBAANA. A vote for Osifo is a vote for impact.
Committed to mentoring younger alumni and fostering intergenerational collaboration, Osifo envisions an association where every chapter functions in harmony, and every voice is heard. He is running on the mantra: “Leadership That Connects. Vision That Delivers.”
When elected, Osifo pledges to sustain UBAANA’s success while ushering in a new era of transparent governance, expanded programs, organizational growth and enhanced member welfare.
Under Osifo’s leadership, UBAANA is poised to flourish: with expanded programs, a louder global voice for UNIBEN, and stronger solidarity among its members. His presidency will reward excellence, foster engagement, and deliver results that benefit alumni and alma mater alike.
UBAANA’s strength lies in its unity. With Osasere Osifo at the helm, that unity will not only be preserved—but transformed into an unstoppable force for good.

Politics › Edo: Okpebholo Offers Political Amnesty To Asue Ighodalo, Asks Him To Join APC by State001(op): 8:57am On May 30, 2025 |
By Ogochukwu Isioma In a significant show of political magnanimity, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has offered an unconditional political amnesty to the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the September 21, 2024 Edo governorship election, Barr. Asue Ighodalo.
The Governor, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua on Friday, in Benin City, explained that his offer of political amnesty to Ighodalo, whom he said has been sidelined by his political benefactors, is a show of true sportsmanship.
Governor Okpebholo who described Ighodalo's “discomforting situation” since he was defeated during the election as troubling, urged him to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) and contribute meaningfully to the ongoing development efforts across Edo State.
"I want to publicly invite Mr. Asue Ighodalo to join us in the APC so that, together, we can advance the cause of development in our dear State. Since his vision aligns with what we are already doing through God’s help, we believe he still has a role to play.
"Godwin Obaseki, who lured Asue Ighodalo to come and run for elections, is hiding in the United States of America. Half of Obaseki’s cabinet members who regarded Ighodalo as their own personal vending machine have all deserted him and are hiding abroad.
"As a brother who truly cares for Ighodalo's wellbeing, I believe that this political amnesty will save him from this humiliation and loneliness. As a people, we have a task of ensuring that we continue to develop Edo State, protect our people, and work hard to re-elect President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027. Asue Ighodalo can be useful in these key areas," Governor Okpebholo stated.
Emphasizing the need for unity and reconciliation beyond political divides, Governor Okpebholo assured Ighodalo that any past political differences would be set aside if he chooses to accept the unconditional political amnesty.
“We are ready to forgive and move forward. What matters now is putting Edo State first. The time for politics is over. This is the time to work for the people and ensure that the dividends of democracy reach every corner of the State,” he declared.
Governor Okpebholo’s offer to Ighodalo is coming barely 24 hours after the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja affirmed him as the winner of the last governorship election in Edo State, dismissing the PDP candidate’s appeal.
Meanwhile, the gesture has been described by his Chief Press Secretary as a deliberate move to foster peace and heal the divisions that emerged during the last governorship election in Edo State.
Itua said the Okpebholo-led administration has continued to prioritize peace, security, and sustainable development, and this latest call for unity is another strategic step towards deepening those efforts. https://metrowatchxtra.com/2025/05/30/gov-okpebholo-offers-political-amnesty-to-asue-ighodalo-asks-him-to-join-apc/

Politics › Edo: PEM Urges Collective Action Against Cultism, Police Brutality, Insecurity by State001(op): 5:55pm On May 24, 2025 |
By Ogochukwu Isioma The Peaceful Edo Initiative, under the banner of the Movement for a Peaceful Edo (PEM), has launched a statewide campaign aimed at promoting sustainable peace and tackling insecurity, cultism, and unprofessional conduct by some security personnel in Edo State.
The convener of the movement, Comrade Aghedo Gifted, at a world press conference on Friday, in Benin City, said the initiative was born out of growing concerns over the recent wave of violence and unrest plaguing communities across the state.
“Over the years, Edo people have lived in peace and harmony,” Aghedo stated. “But in recent times, we have lost our peaceful coexistence to cult-related activities, police brutality, and other retrogressive actions that have cost us dearly.”
PEM decried the devastating impact of cultism on young people and families across Edo, describing it as a menace that has delivered “unrest and sorrow” to the state.
“We have lost so much and gained nothing from cultism,” Aghedo lamented. “Great talents have been buried, families have lost breadwinners, and communities are living in fear. Cultism has done no good but harm.”
The group, therefore, urged residents to reflect deeply on the consequences of cult-related violence. “Let’s ask ourselves, ‘of what benefit is cultism to me?’ ‘Would I love my child to take part in cultism?’.”
Drawing from scripture, the movement warned that the path of cultism may seem appealing to some but ultimately leads to destruction.
PEM also raised alarm over rising cases of misconduct and harassment by some officers of the Nigerian Police Force in Edo State.
“The excessive harassment of youths by men of the Nigerian Police Force has gone over the roof and calls for urgent review. We are not ignorant of the numerous complaints from citizens—many backed with video evidence.”
According to PEM, the erosion of trust between the police and the public must be addressed through urgent reforms.
“We cannot become the criminals we are fighting against,” Aghedo stressed. “We cannot create tension in a society where we are meant to ease tension.”
While commending the efforts of professional and ethical officers who remain committed to safeguarding lives, PEM condemned the actions of rogue officers whose behavior threatens peace and stability.
The movement called on Governor Monday Okpebholo and the Edo State Commissioner of Police to urgently review the operations and conduct of law enforcement officers across the state.
“The people have lost trust and confidence in the police. We must rebuild this trust,” Aghedo said.
The Peaceful Edo Movement extended an open invitation to all stakeholders—Edo indigenes at home and abroad, residents, community leaders, and security agencies—to join hands in reclaiming the state’s legacy of peace.
“With our collective effort, we will achieve sustainable peace in Edo State,” Aghedo noted. “Edo State belongs to all of us. Let’s protect it together.”

Politics › Cultism: Okpebholo Orders Arrest Of NBM President For Alleged Forgery by State001(op): 9:31pm On May 12, 2025 |
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Ajayi, to arrest and initiate the immediate prosecution of the President of the (NBM) of Africa, Olorogun Ese Kakor, over alleged forgery of official state government documents.
In a petition, the Governor accused Kakor of forging government documents, which falsely claimed to authorize him to provide assistance to schools in Edo South Senatorial District. The act, he said, was not only fraudulent but a direct assault on the integrity of the state's administrative processes.
The Governor, who described the act as criminal and deceitful, said the alleged forgery was carried out in connivance with certain low-level civil servants within the state bureaucracy.
He noted that those civil servants implicated in the forgery have already been identified and taken into custody and a police investigation is currently underway to determine their level of culpability.
In a statement on Monday by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo vowed that all those found culpable will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He insisted that the land title on which the NBM headquarter was erected in Edo State has been revoked, citing the organization’s alleged involvement in violent crimes and unlawful activities within the state.
The Governor urged both the Nigeria Police Force and the DSS to intensify their efforts in curbing the operations of groups allegedly involved in criminality and to ensure that those responsible for these acts are brought to justice. https://metrowatchxtra.com/2025/05/12/cultism-gov-okpebholo-orders-arrest-of-neo-black-movement-president-for-alleged-forgery/

He noted that beating Rwanda in Kigali is a boost for the Nigerian players and Nigerians all over the world ahead of Tuesday match against Zimbabwe in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Shaibu, therefore, called on Nigerians to pray for the Super Eagles players, NFF, NSC saying that with collective prayers and support Nigeria will achieve the desire goal of qualifying for the 2026 world Cup.
The Super Eagles’ 2-0 win over Amavubi in Kigali on Friday did not take them to the top of group C of the African series, but it placed them back as one of the contenders in a pool in which they inexplicably fluffed nine of a possible 12 in their previous four matches.
Turkish-based 2023 Africa Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen played no part in any of those matches, for reasons of injury. Now, they have gone to six points, only four away from top-placed South Africa, who defeated Lesotho in a game played simultaneously as the one in Kigali.
On his first run-out in the campaign, it took Osimhen only 10 minutes to make a mark. Nigeria were awarded a free-kick on the left side of Rwanda’s area, and Ademola Lookman heaved it into the box where three white shirts were lurking. The best-placed of them, Osimhen, connected brilliantly and there was no attempt from goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari. https://metrowatchxtra.com/2025/03/21/wcq-shaibu-congratulates-super-eagles-nff-over-rwandan-win/

Politics › Fubara: Shaibu Disowns Viral Video Condemning Emergency Rule In Rivers by State001(op): 7:26pm On Mar 21, 2025 |
Immediate-past Deputy Governor of Edo State, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, has dismissed a viral video report alleging that he criticized President Bola Tinubu over the suspension of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the state House of Assembly.
A viral video surfaced on Thursday showing Shaibu sitting next to an unidentified man dressed in white, where he seemingly dismissed Tinubu’s suspension of Fubara as unconstitutional, following the president’s declaration of emergency rule in the oil-rich state.
However, in a press statement issued by his media team on Wednesday, Shaibu described the report as “false, misleading, and a product of mischief,” labeling it a desperate attempt by political detractors to drag him into non-existent controversies.
“We categorically state that at no time did His Excellency grant any interview, make any statement, or participate in any discussion concerning the current political developments in Rivers State,” the statement said, dismissing the video as “doctored.”
The former deputy governor, known for his forthrightness on national issues, emphasized that he only expresses his views through “reputable television stations, established newspapers, and other credible media platforms.” He dismissed the viral report as a fabricated narrative pushed by “desperate bloggers seeking to revive their failing careers.”
Shaibu further alleged that certain political figures, including immediate-past Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki and former Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Osarodion Ogie, have been orchestrating a smear campaign against him.
He accused them of stalking his activities since his exit from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and resorting to digital propaganda after failing to infiltrate his political and personal affairs.
“These same elements are now using technology, including AI, to doctor videos and manufacture falsehoods to tarnish his image or sell their agenda,” the statement added.
Refuting claims of any rift with the presidency, Shaibu reiterated his respect for President Tinubu and commended his efforts in ensuring national stability.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu holds President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the highest regard and has deep respect for his leadership,” the statement read.
“His Excellency believes that the President has, so far, been taking necessary steps within the limits of the law to protect the stability and unity of the federation.
“As a democrat and firm believer in constitutional governance, Shaibu remains committed to the rule of law and the principles of justice.”
Shaibu, therefore, urged the public to disregard the “concocted report”, dismissing it as a “figment of the imagination of those behind it.”
The former deputy governor reiterated that he remain focused and declared that he would not be distracted by “desperate politicians who have lost relevance.” https://punchng.com/shaibu-denies-viral-video-condemning-emergency-rule-in-rivers/Lala Seun Mynd44

Politics › Death Of Child: Okpebholo Orders Indefinite Suspension Of PSRT Operations In Edo by State001(op): 4:17pm On Mar 14, 2025 |
The Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo has ordered the indefinite suspension of operations of the Public Safety Response Team (PSRT) headed by Mr. Kelly Okungbowa, alias Ebo Stone, in the state.
In a statement on Friday issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, Esq., he said the decision is occasioned by several complaints received by the State Government on allegations of extortion, harassment and unruly behaviour by members of the Team.
“The Government remains committed to upholding law and order and will not tolerate any deviation from the original purpose for which the Team was set up, which is to help maintain public order, assist in protecting public infrastructure and curb illegal activities like street trading and illegal parking in our communities,” he said.
“A thorough review of the Team’s structure and operations, particularly recruitment processes and training of its personnel will be conducted to ensure that all government-sanctioned activities in the State reflect the highest standard of professionalism, fairness, orderliness and respect for human dignity,” the SSG added.
The suspension of the PSRT operations in Edo came barely 48 hours after a fatal motor accident on Wednesday at the Ring Road area of Benin involving a commercial bus ramming into some pedestrian, ostensibly to evade arrest by members of the PSRT, which led to the death of a two-year-old child. https://metrowatchxtra.com/2025/03/14/aftermath-of-a-childs-death-okpebholo-orders-indefinite-suspension-of-psr-operations/
