Politics23 Killed As Vehicles Crash Into Collapsed Bridge In Katsina by steg0miah(op): 5:51pm On Sep 10, 2013
Katsina  – No fewer than 23 persons were feared killed in multiple crashes, when their vehicles plunged into a collapsed bridge at Yar’randa village in Charanchi Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The first crash involved a bus conveying 24 passengers which plunged into the bridge few minutes after its collapse on Monday night.

According to the witness, the bridge collapsed at about 9.30p.m. due to heavy downpour and moments after the bus with registration number XA 328 KZR, conveying passengers from Kano to Katsina, fell into the bridge.

The villagers said efforts made to alert the bus driver was to no avail as he was on high speed.

The bus and the passengers were swept by the heavy current and some of the dead bodies were recovered miles away in Ajiwa area, the villagers and officials told NAN.

NAN also gathered that only two of the passengers in the bus, including a student of Federal College of Education, Bichi in Kano state, survived the incident.

The student, Jamilu Aminu-Elder, who was seen at the scene, could not speak to NAN as he was still in shock.

The police said 10 bodies had been recovered and deposited at the mortuary of General Hospital, Kankia while the search for 12 others was ongoing.

Similarly, another person was reported dead when the vehicle he was in, a Mitsubishi truck, fell into the water at about 5.00a.m. on Tuesday.

Two other persons in the vehicle however survived, while a motorcycle rider with a passenger, who also plunged into the collapsed bridge were rescued alive.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Bala Senchi, who visited the scene, confirmed the story, but said the police were not clear on the number of death as the search for the missing passengers was still on.

He said policemen had been deployed to the area to control traffic and prevent further accident at the scene.

Malam Rabi’u Ibrahim, the Permanent Secretary, sttae Ministry for Works and Housing and an official of Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) had visited the scene to assess the damage.

Ibrahim said a report would be forwarded to the Katsina State Government for prompt intervention.

He condoled with the families of the deceased persons and prayed for the repose of the souls of those who died. (NAN)

Jobs/VacanciesU.s.-based NGO Plans To Create 10m Jobs In Nigeria by steg0miah(op): 12:17pm On Sep 09, 2013
U.S.-based United African Diasporan States (UADS) says it plans to create 10 million jobs in Nigeria within 10 years.

The Executive President of the organisation, Prof. Brimmy Olaghere, announced this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday.

UADS was established in 2001 by Africans based in the U.S. to partner with New Economic Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) in the area of job creation.

The organisation is also to assist African states in the area of socio-economic growth, development projects and programmes, among others.

He said that when operational, the scheme would engage Nigerians, especially youths in meaningful sources of livelihood.

According to him, UADS will establish many industries and mechanised farms, where many Nigerian youths will be engaged in various jobs.

Olaghere added that it would reduce poverty, stop youths from roaming the streets and stem the tide of insecurity to the barest minimum.

He said unemployment and poverty were some of the factors responsible for the high rate of insecurity in the country.

“As Nigerians, we are all aware of the unprecedented violence plaguing our country in recent time.”

He, however, urged Nigerians not to allow poverty to push them into terrorism, adding that such act was capable of plunging the country into jeopardy.

He said it was unfortunate that Nigerians were not willing to cooperate with the government to end insecurity and other challenges.

According to him, security is a collective responsibility, therefore, it should not be left in the hands of governments alone.

Olaghere said without peace, security of lives and property, no nation could achieve any meaningful development.

He urged the Federal Government to create environment conducive for investors, especially foreign ones, to tap the rich natural and human resources of Nigeria for its mutual benefit.

He also advised Nigerians to take community policing seriously, adding that it would go a long way to reduce the rate of crime, criminality and insurgency.

“Government on its part must also be sincere and honest in its quest to salvage the situation of insecurity in the country.

“Government must ensure that it arrests criminals and deals with them in accordance with the law of the land to deter potential criminals.

Olaghere also urged the government to give priority attention to agriculture, to boost food production and provide employment to Nigerians.

He also called on the government to empower women and create job opportunities for the teeming population, especially the youths to avoid restiveness.

Olaghere commended the State Security Service (SSS) for its “professional and patriotic” service on intelligence gathering.

He expressed optimism that the effort would boost the fight against terrorism and other form of criminality in any part of the country.

“The nation’s security agencies also need to be more proactive in order to reduce the spate of kidnappings and other anti social vices.

“ Our security agencies should apply more intelligence sharing and also network effectively as quick response to threats, and to intervene at potential flash points.” (NAN)

PoliticsPDP Remains Intact, Says Jonathan by steg0miah(op): 11:23am On Sep 09, 2013
President Goodluck Jonathan has said that despite the major disagreement in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has led to the formation of a parallel body,  the party remains intact.Speaking at a special post convention dinner for the Peoples Democratic Party  at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa Sunday Night, President Jonathan said the concerns of the aggrieved  members which he described as minor would soon be resolved.Though the post convention conference recorded an impressive attendance of pro-Jonathan party chieftains including state governors, prominent stakeholders of the party including the former president, Olusegun Obasanjo and seven of its governors who have broken rank with the party were conspicuously absent. But Chief Tony Anenih, the chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees while admonishing party faithful to remain united in order to go into election in 2015 enjoined President Jonathan to make his intention of whether to contest or not known by the end of September.

President Jonathan who received high dose of praise from party chieftains in attendance at the dinner said the dinner was a partial fulfilment of the party’s decision to encourage periodic meeting to interact with party members across the states.

While assuring the elected officials of the party of his support, President Jonathan played down the crisis in the party saying “In any human institutions there must be disagreements. What happened (the factional PDP) is a minor disagreements that can be solved.

“For those who have issues, we thank the elders and governors who have been meeting and listening to them, we are committed to resolving our differences”.

Noting the central place of the party in the heart of Nigerians, President Jonathan said even those who are not members of the party do not want it to disintegrate.

“Even those that are aggrieved call themselves the new PDP meaning they know without PDP they are nothing.
PDP is intact, that we have some disagreements is normal. PDP is intact and will remain intact. We will make sure that the party remains one, those who left will rejoin us.  It is only PDP that has not change name or form. We will do out best to keep PDP one, to keep Nigeria one” the president promised.

Vice President Namadi Sambo, who spoke on the future of the party , said the PDP has always provided leadership for the country and cannot afford to shirk that responsibility at this critical time.

PoliticsSuntai, Deputy Claim Taraba Governorship Seat by steg0miah(op): 10:03am On Aug 29, 2013
Taraba state drifted further Wednesday without a clear decision on who was in charge after its acting governor, Garba Umar, dismissed the dissolution of the state cabinet by ailing governor, Danbaba Suntai, insisting that he would continue to act as governor until the state assembly decided otherwise.

Mr. Umar said he was however willing to revert to his position as deputy governor if the House of Assembly, which had insisted on determining Mr. Suntai’s true health condition, asked him to do so.

“I am waiting to hear from them. As I speak to you, if the assembly tells me to revert to the position of deputy, I will comply,” Mr. Umar was quoted as saying Wednesday as the state appeared to inch towards a full-blown political crisis.

The acting governor had earlier dismissed Mr. Suntai’s decision on Wednesday to dissolve the state council and appoint a new secretary, insisting that he was in charge since the state assembly was yet to notify him that the governor, who returned on Sunday from a 10-month medical trip abroad, had resumed work.

In a reaction to an enquiry by PREMIUM TIMES, a spokesperson said the steps purportedly taken by Mr. Suntai so far were null and void.

“Before he assumed office as acting governor, a letter was conveyed to him by the state House of Assembly confirming him. Up till this moment, there is no communication from the House to say that confirmation has been reversed,” the spokesperson, Kefas Sule, said.

“To the best of our knowledge there are no two governments in Taraba and all members of the State Executive Council remain in office.”

Mr. Suntai, who appeared apparently ill during his arrival on Sunday, has made no public appearance or given an address since his arrival, fuelling speculation about the state of his mind and capacity to lead the state.

The House said on Tuesday it would insist on meeting with the governor before taking a decision.

But after what seemed a decisive effort to meet the governor on Wednesday, the lawmakers declined to state the details of their findings, or whether they were allowed access to the governor or not.

The House said it would speak on the visit Thursday (today).

Still, the tension that had built up in the state for the most part of Wednesday appeared to have lowered late evening after Mr. Suntai reportedly appeared briefly on television and swore in new cabinet appointees.

“I thank the people of Taraba State for standing by me and my family. I also thank the commissioners for holding the fort while I was away. Also enjoin all of you to continue to live in peace,” he reportedly said in a recorded remark.

Critics have accused the governor’s family and associates of attempting to foist a critically ill governor on the state so they can usurp his powers.

“Whereas we sympathize with the Suntais and the entire people of Taraba State over this unfortunate incident and sincerely wish the ailing Governor full recovery, we however condemn unequivocally the attempt by some political vultures within and outside the State who are bent on holding a whole State to ransom and make effective governance once again unrealistic,” a network of civil society groups said on Tuesday.

“These charlatans have desperately kept trying to cling to political power and by extension the resources of Taraba State through series of craftily woven plots of deceits, meant to hoodwink the Nigeria public in a manner similar to the unfortunate Turai-Yar’adua saga.”

Events since Monday appeared to give strength to that concern as the critically ill governor issued an immediate notification to the House of Assembly signaling his preparedness to resume work.

Then, while lawmakers insisted he addressed them before approving his letter, the governor, on Wednesday, announced the dissolution of the cabinet and named a new secretary to the state government.

The governor named the outgoing commissioner for Justice, Timothy Kataps, as the news SSG, and Aminu Jika as the new Chief of Staff.

But the acting governor, Mr. Umar, dismissed the order as null and void, and laid claim to the office hours later.

The declaration heightened the political tension in the state that has endured months of uncertainty as both sides jostled for authority and sought to outplay the other long before Mr. Suntai returned to Nigeria.

PoliticsNavy Killed Six Pirates, Injured One In Calabar by steg0miah(op): 8:03pm On Aug 27, 2013
The joint patrol teams of Nigerian Navy - NNS Jubilee and NNS Victory, Calabar killed six pirates and injured one on Tuesday, the Commander, NNS Jubilee, Akwa Ibom, Commodore Isaac Ogbole said.

He said that local fishermen in Ibaka, Mbo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom, briefed the naval officers about the operations of the pirates in the area.

The commander said the pirates, who were operating in two boats, pretended as if the boats were passenger boats.

He said that the naval boats had encircled the pirate boats to check if actually the boats were passenger boats.

Ogbole said that when the officers got to the location as briefed by the fishermen, the pirates were taken by surprise as their efforts to engage the men of the Nigerian Navy in gun battle ended in their waterloo.

He said that, as the naval officers tried to examine the boats, the pirates quickly brought out arms to shoot at the patrol teams.

"Today, our men - NNS Jubilee, Akwa Ibom and NNS Victory, Calabar, Cross River, killed six pirates and seriously injured one.

"The naval officers behaved as if they did not have any information about them. They decided to go past them by encircling them.

"But the pirates, who pretended as if their boats were passenger boats, suddenly brought out arms to engage the naval operatives.

"It was at that instance that the operatives were convinced that the people were pirates and not what they pretended to be," he said.

Ogbole revealed that the NNS Jubilee had, in the last three months, raided illegal bunker hideouts to seize drums of locally-refined fuel running into millions of Naira.
