Noise Trader
Noise trading refers to a style of investing in which decisions to buy and sell are made without the use of fundamental data specific to the company that issued the securities that are being bought or sold. Noise traders generally make short-term trades to profit from various economic trends.

While technical analysis of statistics generated by market activity, such as past prices and volume, provides some insight into patterns that can suggest future market activity and direction, noise traders often have poor timing and overreact to both good and bad news.

Even though that description may not sound very flattering, in reality, most people are considered to be noise traders, as very few make investment decisions solely using fundamental analysis. To put this style in perspective, let’s revisit our earlier analogy about a trip to the mall. Unlike the fundamental analyst, a technical analyst would sit on a bench in the mall and watch people go into the stores. Disregarding the intrinsic value of the products in the store, the technical analyst's decision would be based on the patterns or the activity of people going into each store.

Technical analysis, like other strategies that involve data analysis, can be time-consuming and may require quick reactions to take advantage of perceived opportunities.

Sentiment Trader
Sentiment traders seek to identify and participate in trends. They do not attempt to outguess the market by finding great securities. Instead, they attempt to identify securities that are moving with the momentum of the market.

Sentiment traders combine aspects of both fundamental and technical analysis in an effort to identify and participate in market movements. There are a variety of sentiment trading approaches, including swing traders that seek to catch momentous price movements while avoiding idle times and contrarian traders that try to use indicators of excessive positive or negative sentiment as indications of a potential reversal in sentiment.

Trading costs, market volatility, and difficulty in accurately predicting market sentiment are some of the key challenges facing sentiment traders. While professional traders have more experience, leverage, information, and lower commissions, their trading strategies are restricted by the specific securities they are trading. For this reason, large financial institutions and professional traders may choose to trade currencies or other financial instruments rather than stocks.

Success as a sentiment trader often requires early mornings studying trends and identifying potential securities for purchase or sale. Analysis of this nature can be time-consuming, and trading strategies may require quick timing.
Stock Strategy

Market Timer
Market timers try to guess which direction (up or down) a security will move to profit from that movement. They generally look to technical indicators or economic data to predict the direction of the movement. Some investors, especially academics, do not believe that it is possible to predict the direction of market movements accurately. Others, particularly those engaged in short-term trading, take the exact opposite stance.

The long-term track record of market timers suggests that achieving success is a challenge. Most investors will find that they are not able to dedicate enough time to this endeavor to achieve a reliable level of success. For these investors, long-term strategies are often more satisfying and lucrative.

Of course, day traders would argue that market timing could be a profitable strategy, such as when trading technology shares in a bull market. Investors who purchased and flipped real estate during a market boom would also argue that market timing could be profitable. Just keep in mind that it’s not always easy to tell when to get out of the market, as investors that got burned in the tech-wreck crash and real estate bust can attest. While short-term profits are certainly possible, over the long term, there is little evidence to suggest that this strategy has merit.

You could be more than one type of trader or none of these, depending on your personality.

Arbitrage Trader
Arbitrage traders simultaneously purchase and sell assets in an effort to profit from price differences of identical or similar financial instruments, on different markets or in different forms. Arbitrage exists as a result of market inefficiencies—it provides a mechanism to ensure prices do not deviate substantially from fair value for long periods of time. This type of trading is often associated with hedge funds, and it can be a fairly easy way to make money when it works.

For example, if a security trades on multiple exchanges and is less expensive on one exchange, it can be bought on the first exchange at the lower price and sold on the other exchange at a higher price.

Business / Berkshire Hathaway by stockstr: 10:03pm On Nov 19, 2023
Berkshire Hathaway
Warren Buffett became the controlling shareholder of Berkshire Hathaway in the mid-1960s and began a progressive strategy of diverting cash flows from the core business into other investments. As of May 2023, Berkshire Hathaway had a market capitalization of over $715 billion, making it one of the largest publicly traded companies worldwide.1

Berkshire Hathaway has a long history of operating success and smart investments. The company is the sixth-largest public company in the world in terms of market capitalization as of May 2023.1 Berkshire's stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange in two classes—A shares and B shares. Class A shares have never split and closed above $500,00 per share in May of 2023 (its Class B shares traded at a more modest $325 on the same date).2

Insurance subsidiaries represent a large part of Berkshire Hathaway's holdings. However, the company also manages hundreds of diverse businesses all over the world. These include Duracell, International Dairy Queen, Pampered Chef, Fruit of the Loom, NetJets, and GEICO, among others.3 In addition to owning private companies, Berkshire also has a large investment portfolio of stocks in major public companies, such as Apple (AAPL), Bank of America (BAC), and United Parcel Service (UPS).4 As of December 31, 2022, Berkshire's public market equity portfolio was valued at more than $346 billion.5

Early in his career, Buffett came across the novel idea to use the float from his insurance subsidiaries to invest elsewhere. He focused on selecting stocks that would be held for the long term. Buffett has long eschewed a diversified stock portfolio in favor of trusted investments that would be over-weighted in order to leverage the anticipated return. Over time, Buffett’s investing prowess became so renowned that Berkshire Hathaway's annual shareholder meetings are now a mecca for value investing proponents. They're also the target of intense media scrutiny.

The overall return of Berkshire Hathaway’s stock from 1965 to 2021. During this same period, the S&P 500 returned 30,209%.6 In annualized terms, Berkshire’s stock generated an average yearly return of 20.1% over that period, while the S&P 500’s annualized gain was 10.5%.6

Succession and Control
Succession has always been a hot topic for Berkshire. The big question is whether Buffett’s replacement can continue the streak of outperforming the market. This becomes even more pressing when you consider that Buffett turned 91 years old in August of 2021.

In 2010, Buffett announced that he would be succeeded at Berkshire Hathaway by a team comprised of one CEO and two to four investment managers.

In 2011, it was announced that hedge fund managers Todd Combs and Ted Weschler would be two of those managers. In 2018, the company put Ajit Jain in charge of all of the insurance operations and made Greg Abel the manager of all other (noninsurance) operations. Both men seemed likely candidates for Buffett's heir apparent. Buffet has not announced any retirement plans. Still, it's good that the question of succession has been answered, considering the advanced age of the Oracle of Omaha.

On May 1, 2021, vice chair of Berkshire Hathaway, Charlie Munger, unofficially announced that Warren Buffett would be succeeded as CEO by Greg Abel when Buffett eventually steps down. Abel's official title is CEO of Berkshire Hathaway Energy and vice chair in charge of noninsurance operations.

Who Is Warren Buffett?
Warren Buffett is a world famous business owner and investor. He's renowned not only for the jaw-dropping success of Berkshire Hathaway, the holding company of which he's been in charge since 1964. Buffett is also celebrated for his winning approach to investing, which has created great wealth for many shareholders. His frugal lifestyle, despite being one of the world's wealthiest individuals, and his easy-going manner have earned him fans across the globe.

What Is Value Investing?
Value investing refers to investing in a security with an intrinsic value that's greater than its market value. The idea is that the undervalued security's market value should increase to meet its intrinsic value. Warren Buffett is one example of an investor whose focus on value investing has led to incredible success.

What Is a Class A Share?
Class A shares of common stock usually give shareholders a greater amount of voting rights than Class B and other classes of stock. They're often held by a company's executives and some members of management so that those in charge of the company can retain control of it in various situations, such as a hostile takeover attempt.

The Bottom Line

Understanding the Investment Risk Ladder
Here are the major asset classes, in ascending order of risk, on the investment risk ladder.

Cash
A cash bank deposit is the simplest, most easily understandable investment asset—and the safest. It not only gives investors precise knowledge of the interest that they’ll earn but also guarantees that they’ll get their capital back.

On the downside, the interest earned from cash socked away in a savings account seldom beats inflation. Certificates of deposit (CDs) are less liquid instruments, but they typically provide higher interest rates than those in savings accounts. However, the money put into a CD is locked up for a period of time (months to years), and there are potentially early withdrawal penalties involved.

Bonds
A bond is a debt instrument representing a loan made by an investor to a borrower. A typical bond will involve either a corporation or a government agency, where the borrower will issue a fixed interest rate to the lender in exchange for using their capital. Bonds are commonplace in organizations that use them to finance operations, purchases, or other projects.
2

Bond rates are essentially determined by interest rates. Due to this, they are heavily traded during periods of quantitative easing or when the Federal Reserve—or other central banks—raise interest rates.
3

Mutual Funds
A mutual fund is a type of investment where more than one investor pools their money together to purchase securities. Mutual funds are not necessarily passive, as they are managed by portfolio managers who allocate and distribute the pooled investment into stocks, bonds, and other securities.
4
Most mutual funds have a minimum investment of between $500 and $5,000, and many do not have any minimum at all. Even a relatively small investment provides exposure to as many as 100 different stocks contained within a given fund's portfolio.

Mutual funds are sometimes designed to mimic underlying indexes such as the S&P 500 or the Dow Jones Industrial Average. There are also many mutual funds that are actively managed, meaning that they are updated by portfolio managers who carefully track and adjust their allocations within the fund. However, these funds generally have greater costs—such as yearly management fees and front-end charges—that can cut into an investor’s returns.
5

Mutual funds are valued at the end of the trading day, and all buy and sell transactions are likewise executed after the market closes.
6

Many investment specialists advise their clients to diversity into a wide range of securities rather than focusing on just a few stocks.
Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs)
Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have become quite popular since their introduction back in the mid-1990s. ETFs are similar to mutual funds, but they trade throughout the day, on a stock exchange. In this way, they mirror the buy-and-sell behavior of stocks. This also means that their value can change drastically during the course of a trading day.
7

ETFs can track an underlying index such as the S&P 500 or any other basket of stocks with which the ETF issuer wants to underline a specific ETF. This can include anything from emerging markets to commodities, individual business sectors such as biotechnology or agriculture, and more. Due to the ease of trading and broad coverage, ETFs are extremely popular with investors.
8

Stocks
Shares of stock let investors participate in a company’s success via increases in the stock’s price and through dividends. Shareholders have a claim on the company’s assets in the event of liquidation (that is, the company going bankrupt) but do not own the assets.

Holders of common stock enjoy voting rights at shareholders’ meetings. Holders of preferred stock don’t have voting rights but do receive preference over common shareholders in terms of the dividend payments.

Some investments, such as hedge funds, are only permitted to wealthy investors.

Alternative Investments
There is a vast universe of alternative investments, including the following sectors:

Real estate: Investors can acquire real estate by directly buying commercial or residential properties. Alternatively, they can purchase shares in real estate investment trusts (REITs). REITs act like mutual funds wherein a group of investors pool their money together to purchase properties. They trade like stocks on the same exchange.
10
Hedge funds: Hedge funds may invest in a spectrum of assets designed to deliver beyond market returns, called “alpha.” However, performance is not guaranteed, and hedge funds can see incredible shifts in returns, sometimes underperforming the market by a significant margin.
11
Typically only available to accredited investors, these vehicles often require high initial investments of $1 million or more. They also tend to impose net worth requirements. Hedge fund investments may tie up an investor’s money for substantial time periods.
Business / What Are Commodities? by stockstr: 2:31pm On Oct 09, 2023
What Are Commodities?
Do you ever think about what goes into that cup of coffee you reach for every morning? What about the gas that you use to fill up your tank every week? Most of us never realize it, but virtually all of these goods begin with commodities.

Commodities are an extremely important part of the financial market. That's because they are essential for producers and manufacturers. A commodity is essentially a basic product or raw material used to make all the goods and services that we need in our everyday lives.
1

There are a wide array of commodities, including oil, gas, coffee, soybeans, and rice. These commodities are traded on commodity exchanges around the world such as the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME), the London Metals Exchange, and the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE). Investing in commodities provides investors with a way to diversify their portfolios, especially during times of market volatility.

Read on to find out more about the different types of commodities, their price structures, and who sets them on the market.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
Commodities come in many forms, including grains, energy products, and metals.
Prices are determined by fundamental factors and supply & demand, which change as economic events unfold and trigger waves of buying and selling.
Traders generally don't buy and sell physical commodities; rather, they trade in derivatives like futures and options.
Commodities trade in the cash or spot market, and on organized exchanges as futures contracts.
Commodities futures trade on exchanges and are used for speculation and hedging.
Types of Commodities
Since commodities are traded on exchanges, their prices aren't set by a single individual or entity. In fact, there are many economic factors and different catalysts that affect and move their prices each day.
Stock Strategy

Stock trading Strategy

https://stockstrategy.net/

Just like equity securities, commodity prices are primarily determined by the forces of supply and demand in the market.
2
For example, if the supply of oil increases, the price of one barrel decreases. Conversely, if demand for oil increases (which often happens during the summer), the price rises. Gasoline and natural gas fall into the energy commodities category.

Weather plays an extremely significant role in price changes for crop-related or agricultural commodities, especially in the short term.
2
If the weather affects supplies in a certain region, it has a direct impact on that commodity's price. Commodities that fit into this category include corn, soybeans, and wheat. Cotton, coffee, and rice are referred to as soft commodities.

Gold is one of the most actively traded commodities because it is used to produce jewelry and other goods. But is also considered to be a worthwhile, long-term investment. Silver and copper are other examples of commodities in the metals group.

Livestock is another group of commodities. This category includes live animals, such as hogs, and cattle.

Trading in commodities predates that of stocks and bonds by many centuries as merchants would meet along trade routes like the Silk Road to exchange various agricultural and craft products.

Spot vs. Futures Price
Commodities are traded via futures contracts on exchanges. These contracts obligate the holder to buy or sell a commodity at a predetermined price on a delivery date in the future. Not all futures contracts are the same. In fact, their details differ depending on the commodity being traded.
3

The market price of a commodity that is quoted in the media is often its market futures price. The futures price is different than the spot price or cash price, which is the actual price for the commodity today.
4
For example, if an oil refiner buys 10,000 barrels of oil for $50 per barrel from an oil producer, $50 per barrel is the spot price. The futures price can be more or less than the spot price at any given moment.

Many traders use commodity futures to speculate on future price movements. They generally don't trade the physical commodities themselves. That's because buying barrels of crude or bushels of wheat isn't practical. These investors analyze market activity and chart patterns to speculate on future supply and demand. They subsequently enter long or short futures positions depending on which direction supply and demand move prices.
5
Stock Strategy

Stock trading Strategy

https://stockstrategy.net/

Speculators are distinct from hedgers, who are often the end-users seeking to protect interests in the commodity by selling or purchasing futures contracts. If a soybean farmer thinks prices will fall over the next six months, they can hedge their crops by selling soybean futures today. Hedgers and speculators collectively represent much of the buying and selling interest in commodities futures, making them important parties in determining commodities prices from one day to the next.

Investors can also purchase stocks in companies that deal in commodities, such as energy companies or mining corporations. In addition, several commodity ETFs are available for trading.

Business / How Should We Celebrate The Anniversary by stockstr: 11:46pm On Aug 24, 2023
How Should We Celebrate the Anniversary of the Birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)?

For Muslims, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the best creature ever. He is the last messenger and prophet sent by the Almighty Allah to guide people from the darkness of ignorance to light of Divine guidance. At any human scale, he (PBUH) is a man of extraordinary achievements. This is a fact admitted not only by Muslims, but by non-Muslim thinkers and philosophers also. Having put Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on top of the list of the most 100 most influential people in history in his The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History, Michael H. Hart states, “My choice of Muhammad to lead the list of the world's most influential persons may surprise some readers and may be questioned by others, but he was the only man in history who was supremely successful on both the religious and secular level.”
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) succeeded to be an embodiment of perfect attributes and values. He called upon all people to have good manners and promote higher values of peace, mercy, respect of others, etc. He succeeded to turn an uncivilized nation into a nation of prime civilization that taught the whole world how to get civilized. So, how can we celebrate the birth anniversary of a man of such character and a great prophet?
The fact of the matter is that celebrating the birth of this beloved Prophet (PBUH) cannot be by chanting songs that enumerate his excellent qualities and lib servicing only. Rather, this opportunity should be seized to the full to preach his (PBUH) message and values. Celebration should have different aspects.
https://stockstrategy.net/
Stock Strategy

First of all, we shall take him as our role model, i.e. to follow in his footsteps and have the morals he had. Qatadah reported, “I said to ‘Aisha, ‘O mother of the believers, tell me about the character of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH).’ ‘Aisha said, ‘Have you not read the Quran?’ I said, ‘Of course.’ ʿAisha said, ‘Verily, the character of the Prophet of Allah was the Quran.’” (Sahih Muslim) In another version of the hadith she replied, “He was a walking Qur’an,” i.e. he was an embodiment of the values of the Qur’an. Accordingly, the first manifestation of celebration should be following the Prophet’s (PBUH) message, obeying his legislation, observing good deeds and abstaining from bad deeds and ill manners, and applying his merciful approach when dealing with women, children and any vulnerable group of people.
Another aspect of celebration is to disseminate these good values throughout the world in all means possible in order to introduce the true image of this great prophet extraordinary human being to all humankind. The world in the present time is in dire need for the values of Islam and the character of our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as it goes though continued crises and disasters at all levels. The example of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the way of salvation for humankind in this difficult epoch of history; where the world is void any moral code, where the super powers manipulate weak countries, where some people spoil natural resources and waste food and beverages and some others die out of hunger.

Furthermore, we need to reinvestigate and reread the biography and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in order to come out with new lessons learned and new methods to overcome the challenges facing us today. The month of Rabi I, when the Prophet was born, should be made a month of reviving the character of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in our lives and the lives of the whole mankind. Let it be an opportunity to correct the course of humankind.

Festivals and celebrations are considered one of the distinctive characteristics and key features of societies around the world as they constitute a major part of cultural fabric for people. This means that there is hardly any human society without festivals, whether they are related to religious occasions or non-religious ones. While there are some Islamic festivals like, Eid al-Fiṭr and Eid al-Adha, there are also various celebrations and festivals that distinguish Christians from other religious groups, such as Christmas. Thus, every year, the Christians celebrate the Christmas all over the world, which is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus (PBUH). There are different hypotheses regarding the date of Jesus' birth; however, the Catholic “Western” church has fixed December 25th to be the Christmas date. On the other hand, the Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates the Christmas on January 7th.[1]The present article focuses on the position of Jesus in the Islamic texts and how Islam and Muslims hold great reverence and respect for Jesus and his mother.

Reviewing the Glorious Qur’an, one finds that there is no book on earth that has given Jesus and his mother more reverence and honor than the Qur’an does. We will not be exaggerating if we say that the Qur’an gives more respect and reverence to Jesus more than the current Torah and Gospel do. In the Qur’an, there is a full detailed surah entitled Al-Imran and it refers to the family of Jesus, where Allah says, “Indeed, Allah chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of 'Imran over the worlds. Descendants, some of them from others. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing”.[2] It is known that the aforementioned surah is classified as the second largest Surah in the Qur’an next to al-Baqrah. In addition, there is another surah entitled Maryam, the mother of Jesus. However, there is neither a full detailed surah in the Qur’an about the family of Prophet Muhammad PBUH nor his mother.

Maryam was named six times in Surah Al-Imran and this surah includes precise information concerning the story of the pregnancy of Maryam’s mother, as many scholars explained that Maryam’s mother was a barren old woman, and when Maryam was born, her mother was in deep grief as she had pledged what is in her womb for Allah’s service. The righteous people disputed greatly over who would take care of Maryam, and then it was Zakarīyā who ultimately took good care of her, and she grew up under his patronage as a righteous girl. Every time Zakarīyā entered upon her in the prayer chamber, he found with her provision. He used to ask her about the source of that provision, and she replied, “It is from Allah.”
Maryam’s name was also mentioned twice in surah al-Nisāʼ in the context of dispraising the Jews for their disbelief and their false accusation of Maryam, where Allah, Glory be to Him says, "And [We cursed them] for their disbelief and their saying against Mary a great slander, And [for] their saying, "Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah." And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them" Surah Maryam, her name was also mentioned twice where Maryam brought Jesus to her people carrying him as they accused her of doing something unprecedented. In Suah al-Taḥrīm, she was named once, attributed to her father (Maryam daughter of Imran) in the place of praising her for her deep and unshakable belief. Allah says, “And [the example of] Mary, the daughter of 'Imran, who guarded her chastity, so We blew into [her garment] through Our angel, and she believed in the words of her Lord and His scriptures and was of the devoutly obedient”
In addition to the Glorious Qur’an, there are loads of Aḥādīth referring to the stature of Maryam among Muslims and how they respect and revere her greatly. Abū Hurayrah said, "I heard Allah's Messenger (PBUH) say, “There is no one born among the off-spring of Adam, but Satan touches it. A child therefore, cries loudly at the time of birth because of the touch of Satan, except Mary and her child." Then Abū Hurayrah recited: "And I seek refuge with You for her and for her offspring from the outcast Satan" In addition, Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) said, "Sufficient for you among the women of mankind are Maryam daughter of ʻUmrān, Khadījah bint Khuwaylid, Fāṭimah daughter of Muḥammad and Āsiyah the wife of the Pharaoh”
Regarding Jesus, the son of Maryam, his story was mentioned in many surahs of the Glorious Qur’an such as Maryam, Al-Imranm, al-Māʼidah, al-Nisāʼ, al-Ṣaff, al-Ḥadīd and al-Zukhruf. In surah Maryam, for instance, it included the address to both his mother and Jesus and it seems as if the two stories are only one story. However, at the end of the surah, the verses emphasize the Oneness of Allah and t

The World Meteorological Organization

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for promoting international cooperation on atmospheric science, climatology, hydrology and geophysics.
What we do

As a specialized agency of the United Nations, WMO is dedicated to international cooperation and coordination on the state and behaviour of the Earth’s atmosphere, its interaction with the land and oceans, the weather and climate it produces, and the resulting distribution of water resources.

National Meteorological and Hydrological Services work around the clock to monitor Earth Systems and provide vital weather and climate information worldwide. Their early and reliable warnings of severe weather and fluctuations in air quality as well as of climate variability and change allow decision-makers, communities and individuals to be better prepared for weather and climate events. Their warnings help save life and property, protect resources and the environment and support socio-economic growth. WMO supports National Meteorological and Hydrological Services with this work and in meeting their international commitments in the areas of disaster risk reduction, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and sustainable development.

WMO facilitates and promotes:

the establishment of an integrated Earth System observation network to provide weather, climate and water-related data
the establishment and maintenance of data management centres and telecommunication systems for the provision and rapid exchange of weather, climate and water-related data
the creation of standards for observation and monitoring in order to ensure adequate uniformity in the practices and procedures employed worldwide and, thereby, ascertain the homogeneity of data and statistics
the provision of weather, climate and water-related services - through the application of science and technology in operational meteorology and hydrology - to reduce disaster risks and contribute to climate change adaptation, as well as for sectors such as transport (aviation, maritime and land-based), water resource management, agriculture, health, energy and other areas
activities in operational hydrology as well as closer cooperation between National Meteorological and Hydrological Services in states and territories where they are separate
the coordination of research and training in meteorology and related fields.
Through its Technical Commissions, Programmes, Projects and Regional Offices, as well as its synergistic and public-private partnerships, WMO facilitates and coordinates an Earth system approach to the gathering and free exchange of observations, promotion and integration of research and the development and delivery of services in the areas of weather, climate and water.

The activities of WMO facilitate the maintenance and expansion of its Members' atmospheric, oceanographic and land-based observational networks; the free unrestricted exchange of the resulting data and information; and related capacity development and research in order to optimize the production of weather, climate and water-related services worldwide.

Psychology Around the World

In the dark days of China's Cultural Revolution, the government closed the nation's psychology departments and research institutes. It banished psychologists to remote areas of the countryside to work the land. It dismissed psychology itself as a bourgeois pseudo-science promoting a false ideology of individual differences.

In the 25 years since the Cultural Revolution ended, China's attitude toward psychology has changed dramatically. Today the government recognizes that psychology has an important role to play in the country's development, whether that means helping citizens cope with rapid economic change or helping employers choose the most suitable employees.

In fact, a recent government report listed psychology as one of half a dozen disciplines that deserve high priority when it comes to government funding over the next few decades.

"In order to achieve all-around modernization, China is to draw on the achievements of civilization the world over, and to assimilate any advanced scientific and technological achievements from other countries," says Qicheng Jing, a past president of the Chinese Psychological Society and a professor at the Institute of Psychology at the Chinese Academy of Science in Beijing. "Chinese psychology, a discipline strongly affected by national policy and social environment, is going to seize this opportunity to develop itself."

Western-style psychology arrived in China at the beginning of the 20th century, brought by Chinese scientists who had studied in the West. For a few decades, the discipline flourished. By the early 1920s, these psychologists had established the country's first psychology laboratory and department, first psychology journal and the Chinese Psychological Society. But with the outbreak of war against Japan in 1937 and the world war that followed, further development of the discipline ground to a halt.

With the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, psychology rebounded, but with a Soviet twist. According to a Chinese Psychological Society report, Pavlov's theory of conditioned reflexes dominated in this period. The end of Mao's decade-long Cultural Revolution in 1976 brought renewed interest in Western psychology.

Until recently, most Chinese psychologists focused on teacher training. Although about half of the nation's psychologists still work in education, new needs have emerged. According to Jing and other Chinese psychologists, psychologists' top priorities include the following:

Counseling. The introduction of a free-market economy has brought China increasing prosperity. But with that prosperity have come soaring rates of anxiety and depression, says Houcan Zhang, a psychology professor at Beijing Normal University and incoming vice president of the International Union of Psychological Science. "People can't adjust to such rapid economic development and social change," she says, noting that most schools and universities now have counseling centers. Although psychotherapy is catching on in the big cities, those in rural areas have little access to psychological services. Those unmet needs can be deadly. A 1997 report by the World Bank, the World Health Organization and Harvard University estimated that China accounts for a whopping 44 percent of the world's suicides each year despite having only 22 percent of the world's population. Female farmers represent a disproportionate number of the victims.Human resources. The shift from a planned economy has also prompted psychologists to get involved in the field of human resources. In the old days, Zhang explains, the government assigned everyone to their jobs and expected them to keep their posts for life. Nowadays, people are free to find jobs that suit their interests and abilities. Both the public and private sector are using psychologists to find the best candidates for jobs, says Zhang.Health psychology. Helping China's immense population stay healthy is another emerging priority for psychologists. Especially critical is halting a rising HIV/AIDS epidemic. The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS estimates that a million Chinese are already infected. "Stopping the epidemic of AIDS in China has mainly been a governmental issue," says Yongming Chen, president of the Chinese Psychological Society. "However, Chinese psychologists have started to pay attention to this problem."
A shortage of psychologists

Achieving these goals will require many more well-trained psychologists than China currently has. Thanks to psychology's rocky history in China and a bad case of "brain drain," there are only 10,000 psychologists in a country of more than a billion.

the Functions of a Stock Market?
The stock market ensures price transparency, liquidity, price discovery, and fair dealings in trading activities.

The stock market guarantees all interested market participants have access to data for all buy and sell orders, thereby helping in the fair and transparent pricing of securities. The market also ensures efficient matching of appropriate buy and sell orders.

Stock markets need to support price discovery where the price of any stock is determined collectively by all of its buyers and sellers. Those qualified and willing to trade should get instant access to place orders and the market ensures that the orders are executed at a fair price.

Traders on the stock market include market makers, investors, traders, speculators, and hedgers. An investor may buy stocks and hold them for the long term, while a trader may enter and exit a position within seconds. A market maker provides necessary liquidity in the market, while a hedger may trade in derivatives.

How Stock Markets Are Regulated
Most nations have a stock market, and each is regulated by a local financial regulator or monetary authority, or institute. The SEC is the regulatory body charged with overseeing the U.S. stock market.

The SEC is a federal agency that works independently of the government and without political pressure. The mission of the SEC is stated as “protecting investors, maintaining fair, orderly, and efficient markets, and facilitating capital formation.”

Companies listed on the stock market exchanges are regulated, and their dealings are monitored by the SEC. In addition, the exchanges set certain requirements such as mandating timely filing of quarterly financial reports and instant reporting of relevant corporate developments, to ensure that all market participants are equally informed.

What Is the Significance of the Stock Market?
The stock market is a component of a free-market economy. The stock market works as a platform through which savings and investments of individuals are efficiently channeled into productive investment opportunities and add to the capital formation and economic growth of the country.

What Is an Alternate Trading System?
