The illusion of free will makes us do things that we might not necessarily have normally done, just to prove that we can. Its not much a matter of the West, as it is of someone trying to express their individuality in a way she sees fit. Now, how you choose to respond it is your own part. Mostly, if I have no responsibility over a person, and I don't pay their bills and I am not interested in distracting myself from a boring journey by ogling them, I simply ignore. Trust me, sermonizing such people only enforces their need to prove that they are sorrowful captives of the freedom of choice. |
Another funny thought that crosses my mind often: were the gorgons so ugly that whoever looked at them turned to stone or was it that they actually had the power to turn men to stone at will. If the latter is the case then they were really a sore bunch of sisters. |
It seems the greek gods could actually die, and were not as immortal as they led the mortals to believe; this being brought about by the ambrosia they ate and the nectar they drank. Its actually true when you consider it, because the gods did on many occassions fight each other with ensuing casualties. It has always led me to question if there is such a thing as a true immortal in mythology in general. Dracula and his wooden stakes and garlic, werewolves and silver and to some extent wolfsbane. I guess a truly immortal boss makes a good story boring. |
