By Emmanuel Mogbede Senator Shehu Sani has appealed to the national leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to rescue the party from destruction in Kaduna state. The Kaduna Central APC senator told journalists on Monday in Abuja, after a closed-door meeting with National Chairman of APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, that the party needed to be rescued in his state. Sani was in company of some APC members in Kaduna, including Sen. Suleiman Hunkuyi (Kaduna North) to the meeting with the national chairman. He condemned Saturday’s local government elections in the state, saying that it did not hold. Sani alleged that the delegates list for the election was doctored and did not follow due process. ´´They sat down in the palace of their gods to write names and sent it down here for us to accept; that can never happen,´´ he said. He said that such practice contributed to the problems of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and warned that the APC could go the same way if its leadership failed to address the problem. ´´This was the seed of the destruction of the PDP, where individuals considered themselves as gods and any other person a slave; that will never happen in Kaduna state. ´´We are here to present our case and to appeal to the instrument of leadership of this party to intervene in the Kaduna issue before it becomes too late. ´´We are here to also state it to the party´s national leadership that we are under siege in Kaduna ´´The use of thugs and violence by agents and close associates of the state government is one thing we cannot tolerate,´´ Sani said. He decried the recent raiding of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat in Kaduna by thugs during a press briefing after the councils’ election, during which journalists were injured. He said that such was the trait of the APC, and urged its leadership to should set up an investigation panel to bring the perpetrators of the disturbances. The lawmaker alleged that the thugs were acting in concert with the police in the state. ´´If we continue on this part, where one person feels he is a god, I think we are simply repeating the very problem that destroyed the party we ejected out of power,´´ he said. He maintained that there was a need for APC to provide the vehicle for real change for the country to change and tasked members to change the manner they played politics. Sani stressed that those who resolved to the use of violence or thugs to liquidate perceived political opponent were on the wrong side of history. He said that members of his faction of the party in the state were not agents of violence but were loyal and peaceful. He insisted that if the APC must win the 2019 election, it must apart from fulfilling its campaign promises, set an example for discipline, comradeship and a sense of belonging to all members. Sani said that what was happening in the party´s leadership in the state was unbecoming and should be addressed before it became late. He appealed to those in authority to ´´know that the God that brought the APC to power was still alive and will always listen to the cries of the oppressed and marginalised. ´´ We are here in the spirit of that, and we hope that we will get the cooperation of the national party´s leadership to come to the rescue of the party in Kaduna before it is too late,´´ he said. By Joan Nwagwu The National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has threatened to begin a strike in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) over a dispute with Assets Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON). At the end of National Executive Council meeting, Mr Igwe Achese, NUPENG President, said the strike was inevitable because of three billion naira terminal benefits allegedly owed some sacked oil sector workers. Achese said that those affected were former staff of Seawolf Drilling, an oil servicing firm, in Rivers. He said the management of AMCOM was being lackadaisical in meeting its obligation of settling the workers. Achese said more than 300 workers of the oil firm were disengaged unceremoniously in 2013. The retrenchment of the workers followed the company’s indebtedness to a commercial bank to the tune of N25 billion which led to AMCOM taking over the assets and liabilities of Seawolf. The workers, who are affiliate members of NUPENG, have been asking AMCOM to pay their severance package without success, he said. Achese said NUPENG had given two weeks grace to the Federal Government and the Ministry of Labour and Employment to intervene. ‘’For the past four years we have been discussing the issue of redundancy and closure of Seawolf, which AMCON, a federal agency, took over since 2013. “It is very unfortunate to state that workers engaged to a company that AMCON took over; AMCON has refused to pay them their terminal benefits since 2013. “Therefore, the union in a very strong resolution, is requesting the Federal Government to prevail on AMCON to open doors for dialogue to pay these workers of Seawolf which it took over. “Of course, you will agree with me that taking over a company such as the case of AMCON you are taking both liabilities and assets. “As such we have written series of letters to the Ministry of Petroleum, Ministry of Labour and Employment, to the security agencies and all agencies expected to be notified on this issue. “We are aware that AMCON instead of paying these workers and negotiating the terminal benefits of these workers has decided to take the matter to court and we have been faced with series of adjournments since 2013. “We, therefore, have no choice as a union but to write an open letter to Mr President and the acting president to take all necessary steps to address the issues of Seawolf and that of Chevron, ” he said. Achese said the union had notified the Federal Government in a letter that if it failed to address the issues after two weeks, it would call out its members to withdraw their services in the FCT. Achese said that it had also directed its members across the country to, in solidarity with the struggle, dress in red and hoist green leaves on their vehicles for the next two weeks. On restructuring, he said that the campaign for restructuring the country had become necessary. Achese said that the restructuring must take the form of fiscal federalism such that component states or regions might control their own resources. “On our part as a union, we canvass for true federalism to be adopted in the country, each state or region should be allowed to control their resources through fiscal federalism. “This approach, we believe, will reduce the current agitations just the way the regions of old controlled their local resources which made room for healthy competition and development.” (NAN) http://www.splint.com.ng/2017/07/nupeng-threatens-strike-over-dispute.html

Italian police said on Thursday that seven people who lured Nigerian women to Italy “with voodoo rituals” and then forced them into prostitution have been arrested in Nuoro, Sardinia. In a statement police said the traffickers allegedly performed voodoo rituals on the women to make them swear to repay the cost of the trip to Europe, and warn them that their relatives would die if they did not. “Once in Italy, criminals would help the women escape from migrant centres and take them to the north-western city of Turin, where they would be told that prostitution was the only way in which they could repay their debt. “Some women were asked to pay as much as 30,000 euros (35,200 dollars),’’ the police said. On July 22, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) had issued a report saying that three-quarters of the roughly 11,000 Nigerian women who landed in Italy in 2016 may have been taken there by sex traffickers. The IOM, a UN agency, said it was difficult to make precise estimates because most victims of the sex trade are afraid to speak up and seek assistance because of shame, submission to traffickers accompanying them on migrant boat, or fear of retaliation against their relatives. In a separate incident in the Nuoro area, a local migrant centre was attacked overnight by a powerful makeshift bomb that destroyed one of its side entrances. Two of the 64 migrants hosted there reported light injuries to their legs. NAN http://www.splint.com.ng/2017/07/italian-police-nab-7-for-turning.html

The WhatsApp hardcore will remember when you used to have to pay a 0.99p annual fee to use the service – but watch out if you receive a message about it. Fraudsters are trying to catch long-term users with an email message relating to the old 0.99p charge (which was scrapped by Facebook in 2016). Since then the service has been free for every user. The emails try and trick users into handing over bank details. Experts says ‘The emails claim your “subscription will be ending soon” and are after your banking information. They have been an increasing number of reports about this type of mail in America over the past couple of days and it could spread to Africa soon. Whilst late adopters of the service might look at the email below and simply brush it off, long term users will remember paying and could quite easily think the app has gone back to its subscription model and get caught out. Chelsea are reportedly prepared to miss out on sponsorship revenue in order to keep ‘Stamford Bridge’ as part of the name of their redeveloped stadium. The Premier League champions are currently working on how they will finance the rebuild of their west London home. The club was given the all-clear to begin work on the redevelopment of Stamford Bridge earlier this year, with planning permission given for a new £60,000 arena. Ambitious designs by architects Herzog & de Meuron, who built the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing, were green lit by the Mayor of London in March. An obvious source of revenue to finance the £500million project is to give away naming rights. Arsenal and Man City are among those who have enjoyed financial gains with their respective deals with airlines Emirates and Etihad. Tottenham, who will soon move into a new home, plan to follow this path. However Chelsea are committed to keeping Stamford Bridge as part of the name. The Times report that the preferred formula would be: The X Stadium at Stamford Bridge Such a format would have less impact from a sponsorship perspective and would therefore command a lower price tag. Development is expected to begin in 2020 with the new stadium potentially opening in time for the 2023/24 season metro http://www.splint.com.ng/2017/07/chelsea-prepared-to-lose-potential.html

By Mohammed Lawal Prof. Michael Kwanashie, Vice-Chancellor, Veritas University, Abuja on Tuesday urged Nigerians to stop blaming President Muhammadu Buhari for the current economic recession in the country. He made the remark while speaking as lead paper presenter at a One-Day seminar on “The Viability of Federal Government Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) 2017-2020 held at the main campus, Samaru, Zaria. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the seminar, which was organised by Institute for Development Research and Training (IDR) was held at ABU main campus, Samaru, Zaria. “Let me emphasis that President Buhari did not bring suffering to Nigerians but it is actually the source of Nigeria’s revenue that crashed from $114 a barrel to $48.8. “This has really affected the economy, it doesn’t matter who is the president now, the situation had come and it is global phenomenon. “Of course, Nigerians are suffering, but Buhari cannot do magic to raise the global price of oil, remember, oil went down as low as $30 per barrel before it started coming up,” he said. The Don advocated for diversification of the economy from oil to non-oil sectors to revitalise the country’s economy. Kwanashie observed that the only key thing that would bring Nigeria out of recession was rise in global oil price. “You can bring anybody to rule the country, as long as oil prices remained low, Nigeria cannot come out of recession.” “If you want ERGP to succeed, both state and local governments must start planning on specified projects that are important and have direct impact on the lives of people,” he noted. In his presentation, Prof. Ayo Ra’uf-Dimoye, a political economist from ABU, observed that achieving ERGP was viable. He expressed concern over the delay in passing the budget by the National Assembly and called for a change of attitude to facilitate growth and development. “It is very sad that the executive will prepare and sent the budget to the National Assembly in August but they will not pass it until May next year and pad it to suit their own interest. He called on Nigerian government to overhaul its educational sector so as to address a number of issues in the economy. “It takes Singapore 15 to 20 years to overhaul its education sector, now in Singapore, all Ministers are PhD holders. “Everyone here can attest to the fact that Singapore had recorded tremendous success in its economy,” he said. In his speech, the ABU Vice-Chncllor, Prof. Ibrahim Garba assured that the seminar would be packaged and forwarded to appropriate authorities. Garba, who, was represented by Prof. Zubairu Abubakar, Dean School of Post Graduate Studies, said Nigeria as a nation needed a clear roadmap to move out of recession. Earlier, the Convener of the seminar and Director, Institute for Development Research and Training (IDR), Prof. Hudu Abdullahi said the essence of the Programme was to hear from the specialists’ mouth the viability of ERGP. He said when a plan was to be planned all stakeholders must be incorporated, advising that all Nigerians have a stake in the planning as it affects all sectors of the economy. He appealed to the federal government to involve experts from universities in the implementation plan by the federal government. By Emmanuel Mogbede Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno, has advised governors in the country to stop pilfering from the public treasury with the aim of accumulating wealth. Instead, he urged them to focus on enhancing the well-being of the masses. The governor gave the advice on Tuesday in Abuja at the 2017 graduation of Internally Displaced Girls under the Organisation of Female Students Scholarship Scheme. The 73 graduating girls were sponsored by the Girl Child Concern (GCC), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), in collaboration with the Borno Government, and were selected in from secondary schools in five Northern states. ´´The most important yard stick has to do with the quality of governance; there is more to leadership than primitive capital accumulation. ´´No matter how much you accumulate beyond a certain point, it’s just a number,” the governor said. He said that unless something was done fast to address the plight of the common man, ´´what awaits the country will be worse than the Boko Haram insurgency´´. According to him, this is violence that cannot be separated from poverty, and a hopeless, jobless, ill-educated and ill-paid young man is the most dangerous. Shettima stated that it was the responsibility of governors to enthrone good governance by “wearing their thinking caps” and working for the people. He, therefore, stressed the need for governors to create more jobs, invest in education and create work space and work stations for the next generation of youths. He said that there was nothing special about oil as it would soon go into extinction, noting that human resources was the most important and should be developed. The governor, however, said that there was need for Nigerians to unite to fight the country´s common challenges. He noted that women and children bore the brunt of insurgency, adding that the Boko Haram sect had so far created 54,911 widows and 52,311 orphans in the state. This, he said, was according to World Bank, European Union and the Presidency’s official figures. ´´These are official figures, probably the unofficial figure may be twice this number. “The truth is that we either take care of these orphans or 10 years to fifteen years from now, they will be the monsters that will drive us out of this land,” he said. According to the governor, some elite and political bigwigs are already afraid of visiting rural areas to meet with common men for fear of being molested. He added that there was presently a palpable content against the elite glaring on the faces of most common men. He decried the state of public schools in the country, particularly in the North, saying that security and feeding in most of the schools was nothing to write home about. Shettima stressed that unless the country´s leadership began to think toward improving the lot of the common man and working for the people, the situation would deteriorate. Earlier, Dr Mairo Mandara, Executive Director of the GCC, said the girls were another success story of the country´s fight against insurgency. This, she said, was so because the girls dared where others failed and got what others were abducted for. Mandara described the girls as “a cohort of brave, fearless, active and informed girl mentors” empowered with life skills who would encourage others to remain in school. She added that the centre had concluded plans to establish a Girls´ Academy in Borno with learning activities taking off in September, 2017. Mandara said that GCC was also setting up a skills acquisition centre for teaching construction skills in collaboration with King Muhammad VI of Morocco. She said that Borno Government had already provided a land for the project, adding that discussions for the setting up of the centre had reached advanced stage. Most of the girls who spoke to NAN expressed happiness on their freedom and graduation and prayed to God to bless the GCC and Borno Government Source; NAN. http://www.splint.com.ng/2017/07/shettima-to-governors-stop-stealing.html

A recent call by Ghanaian actress turned producer Yvonne Nelson for movie makers, actors and actresses to concentrate on giving life back to the dying movie industry than concentrate on ‘slaying’ on red carpets seemed not to have gone down well with some people. One of such persons who feels hit by the comments of Yvonne Nelson is self-styled slay queen Nana Akua Addo whose presence at almost every red carpet across the world (including the 2017 BET Awards) has been captured and beamed by the media. This has been so because she has over the times endeared herself to the hearts of many for her exotic fashion sense. In a sharp rebuttal on Instagram, the slay queen who was missing at the just ended Golden Movie Awards Africa 2017 due to her studies in America advised Yvonne Nelson to “either reinvent and help the industry grow or become a Commentator” just as she is doing now. According to Nana Akua Addo, red carpets are a part of an industry called fashion and the earlier it is accepted the better. She also stated the industry was for talents and not “long legs” since “long legs” could “get weak with time” Her reference to Yvonne Nelson as long legs seem somehow harsh since Yvonne Nelson has over the years announced how much she is in love with her long legs. “RED CARPET is an industry called Fashion(SLAY) YES!!Either reinvent and help the industry grow or become a Commentator Technology is making video and content the future. The industry is for the TALENT. TALENT will keep you relevant in the industry long LEGS may get weak with time. CHANGE is here if you can’t embrace it,join them “if you can’t beat them !!!!!
