When you decide to get wed, choosing who to have as your best man can be a tricky decision. You don’t want to piss off your sister but if you don’t choose your best mate, they might not be your best mate for much longer. But when British pair Emma-Leigh and Shane Matthews agreed to tie the knot, they knew immediately who they wanted to be beside them. Their two pets, Niko and Phil, joined their human bridesmaids and groomsmen. ‘The dogs were part of every part of the wedding and didn’t really leave our side,’ says Emma-Leigh. By Prudence Arobani/New York Idara Inokon, Miss Nigeria USA contestant representing Akwa Ibom, has emerged winner of Miss Nigeria USA 2017 beauty pageant held on Saturday night into early Sunday morning in New York. Idara, who was crowned by the out gone holder of the title, Miss Lola Adeoye, beat 13 other contestants to emerge winner. The new Miss Nigeria USA, who was the fourth to be crowned in the pageant, would cart home $10,000 in prizes, according to Ms Joy Fakhoury, the organisers of the annual beauty pageant. She would also embark on a pet project that would impact on the less privileged back home in Nigeria. Each of the contestants represented her culture in the pageant that was meant to promote the richness of Nigerian culture, the diversity of its people, the beauty and intellect of the Nigerian lady and to promote togetherness and unity among Nigerians in the Diaspora. Miss Ondo – Ayoyemi Ajimatanrareje, emerged the First Runner-up, Miss Lagos – Susan Adeyemi, emerged the Second Runner-up, while Miss Rivers, Lucy Edosomwan, emerged Miss Congeniality, in the keenly contested pageant. The contestants were tested in intelligence, carriage, beauty, knowledge about Nigeria, Nigerian culture, and planned contributions to Nigeria through a pet project during their reign. Judges said that they had a hard time determining the winners as all the contestants performed outstandingly. Fourteen contestants made the finals on Saturday, whom were; Miss Abia, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo and Rivers States. The new Miss Nigeria USA, while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) after her crowning, expressed surprise at her emergence, pledging to devote her reign to impacting the lives of the less privileged in Nigeria. “I was very surprised, I felt very shaky in the whole competition, you know how nerves get to you but I just said ‘Idara, whatever the outcome, you did your best and so I went out with a smile’. “I wanted to compete in a different pageant in New York back in April but it happened to be the same weekend as one of my close friend’s. “And so, I said well, let me reconsider and find a pageant here in the U.S. that has good values and is something I want to stand behind. “So, when I found Miss Nigeria USA and I found that the pageant was located in New York, I was extremely excited. “I see it as a moment to share women empowerment and to represent my culture, which is a perfect opportunity. I really want to start to get to work to see how I can serve my community. “My platform is to create awareness on prevention. As a registered nurse, I do health education on a daily basis. “It is something I am very passionate about and I believe that if people are educated about their health, they can live healthier lives. So that would be what I would pursue during my reign,” she said. Inokon, a registered nurse in the U.S., and born to a Nigerian father from Akwa Ibom, graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science and Psychology. She was also attended the Accelerated Nursing Programme at the University of Delaware and graduated in 2014, and currently a Masters Student in Family Nursing. The event was attended by many Nigerians across the U.S., Africans and other nationalities resident in America. Source; NAN http://www.splint.com.ng/2017/08/akwa-iboms-idara-inokon-crowned-miss.html

The world’s oldest man, Yisrael Kristal – a Holocaust survivor, has died at the age of 113. Mr Kristal, who was certified last year by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest man, died today just one month before he was due to turn 114. The 113-year-old, who lived in Haifa, Israel, was the only member of his immediate family to survive the Holocaust. Israeli media Haaretz Daily announced his death this afternoon. Mr Kristal is survived by two children, 9 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. World’s oldest man, Auschwitz survivor Yisrael Kristal, dies aged 113 The World Jewish Congress noted his passing in a brief Twitter statement. It said: ‘Holocaust survivor Yisrael Kristal was the oldest man in the world. Yisrael passed away today. ‘May his memory be a blessing.’ Kristal, originally from Zarnow in what is now Poland, was born on September 15, 1903 – three months before the Wright brothers’ first successful powered airplane flight. In September last year he celebrated his Bar Mitzvah after a century-long delay. Usually marked at 13 for boys and 12 or 13 for girls – a Bat Mitzvah in that case – it marks the transition into someone responsible for his or her actions. Kristal was unable to celebrate his Bar Mitzvah in 1916 because his mother had died three months earlier and his father was a soldier in the Russian army at the time of World War I. His daughter Shula Koperstoch said last year: ‘My father is religious and has prayed every morning for 100 years, but he has never had his Bar Mitzvah.’ After World War I, Kristal moved to Lodz where he worked in the family confectionary factory, married and had two children. But his life was disrupted when the Jewish quarter of the city became a ghetto under Nazi occupation during World War II and Kristal was sent to the infamous Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. Around 1.1 million people, most of them European Jews, perished in the camp between 1940 and 1945 before it was liberated by Soviet forces. His wife and two children died but Kristal survived, weighing just five and a half stone at the end of the war. He then moved to Israel, where he opened a sweet shop Guinness World Records’ website said that on receiving his certificate at his home in the northern Israeli city of Haifa last year Kristal offered no explanation for his longevity. He said: ‘I don’t know the secret for long life. I believe that everything is determined from above and we shall never know the reasons why.’ metro.co.uk http://www.splint.com.ng/2017/08/worlds-oldest-man-auschwitz-survivor.html

A Saudi star has been arrested for ‘dabbing’ during a concert. TV host, actor, and Saudi national Abdallah Al Shahani was performing the dance move that has become a worldwide craze at a music festival in the city of Taif at the weekend. It has been performed around the world by the likes of Prince Harry and Tom Watson as well as a host of sporting stars including Manchester United ace Paul Pogba and NFL quarterback Cam Newton. The dance, which involves a person tucking their head into the their arm, is banned in Saudi Arabia because local authorities in the deeply conservative country say it is a reference to drugs culture. When Al Shahani performed it at the festival at the weekend he was arrested. The video of his controversial performance became popular on social media with thousands tweeting about his moves. The Saudi Interior Ministry’s National Commission for Combating Drugs banned the move because they consider it to refer to marijuana use. A poster published by the ministry depicting dabbing warns of the dangers of the move to young people and society. The origins of the dance are unclear. Some suggest it was born out of the Atlanta hip-hop scene about two years ago with others postulating it debuted in the Disney video game Kingdom Hearts. It’s popularity has soared and is now performed regularly around the world. Other Saudi stars have also been recorded pulling the shape without having been arrested. It is not clear whethre Al Shahani planned to do the move or got swept away in the moment. On Tuesday he posted on Twitter writing: ‘I apologise to our respected government and to my audience for unintentionally and spontaneously making the dance move at Taif festival. Please accept my apology.’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQWx1eKCvtU Source; Metro http://www.splint.com.ng/2017/08/saudi-singer-arrested-for-dabbing-on.html

By Dorcas Jonah National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), has lent its voice to the call by the Army High command for parents in Borno to stop donating their daughters to Boko Haram for suicide missions. A statement signed by Hajiya Binta Ibrahim, the council’s Public Relations Officer, described the act as “unthinkable and despicable.’’ On Tuesday the Nigerian Army disclosed that some parents in Borno state were donating their daughters to Boko Haram to be used as suicide bombers. In the light of this, Ibrahim advised parents and guardians in Borno to stop the practice. She said that it was inhuman to donate children to be sacrificed for whatever reason or motive. She appealed to traditional and community leaders and other well-meaning Nigerians especially in the North-East, to dissuade parents from donating their daughters or wards for indoctrination and suicide bombing missions. “The council frowns at this discovery by the Army that some of these hapless minors were “donated” to the terrorists’ sect by their parents and guardians, as part of their contribution to the perpetuation of Boko Haram terrorists. “We are calling on states and civil society organizations to assist in protecting the large number of children on the streets, by helping them get back to school,’’ she said. The PRO stressed the need to step up social re-awakening of the people of the area through sensitisation of the youths on the dangers of religious indoctrination. She advised parents to desist from this act, stressing that it was destroying the social fabric of the society and the country at large. In a related development, the NCWS has condemned Sunday’s shooting of worshippers at St. Philips Catholic Church, Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra. Ibrahim who described the act as `sacrilegious,’ called for prompt action to bring the culprits to book. NAN http://www.splint.com.ng/2017/08/stop-donating-children-to-boko-haram.html

This is the horrifying moment a man is gored by a bear after he teased it by dangling food in its jaws. Naiphum Promratee, 36, had been with four friends when he decided to visit the temple in rural Phetchabun province, Thailand, this morning. The monks keep around two dozen wild boars and a number of bears in a small enclosure which they care for and allow guests to feed. Naiphum stood on a surrounding wall and reached into the enclosure to feed the boars and he began playing with them – before teasing the bear with food. Senegalese singer, songwriter and businessman Akon has called on African youth to play an active role in rebuilding the continent and not depend of the governments. The American-born music star was addressing over 2,000 youth from all over Africa in Rwanda’s capital Kigali during the final day of the maiden YouthConnekt Africa Summit organised to shape the future of the continent’s youth. “We have to be the driving force to rebuild Africa. We cannot depend on governments to do it for us. Their job is to lay down the low and make sure that there’s accountability for the things that we do,” he was quoted by local media The New Times. “When I was growing as an entertainer, I said to myself I don’t want to be remembered for just singing and dancing. Ultimately, I had to figure out what I can do that will help create a legacy. It hit me in the middle of the first song when the power just went off,” he said, while making reference to his 1 billion dollar solar project aimed at providing electricity to some 600 million Africans. Akon, real name Aliaume Damala Badara Akon Thiam, is the co-founder of the Akon Lighting Africa project which primarily targets rural communities that are not connected to the electricity and also seeks to find ways to bring costs down to make power supply more affordable. He called on Africans in the diaspora to join hands and change the narrative about the continent while they help fast-track its economic development. “On the internet you will only see historical images and animals, as if Africa was a big jungle. Africans never gets full credit in any way. Entertainers, filmmakers and producers, the press and anyone that creates content should take part in redefining this continent,” he added. The three-day YouthConnekt Africa summit opened on Wednesday under the theme: “Realizing Africa’s Youth Potential.” It focused on establishing a policy, programmes and partnerships to guide the continent to its goals of creating at least 54 million jobs that will absorb the growing labour force. Among the participants are government officials and special guests including Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Jack Ma, Founder and Executive Chairman of Alibaba Group, Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi, Secretary-General of UNCTAD and most importantly successful entrepreneurs, artists and youth opinion leaders from across the continent. The Summit was organised jointly by the Government of Rwanda in collaboration with UNCTAD, UNDP and other YouthConnekt partners. Recently Wale celebrated his baby girl’s first birthday and in true Nigerian style he showered cash on her and the internet did not like it. Instead of getting pissed at his critics he used it as a teachable moment to explain what his cultural custom of ‘spraying’ is actually about. But why should he have to do that in the first place? The Lotus Flower Bomb rapper put down all the criticism he received from the internet to cultural ignorance. ‘I’m not tripping. I’m used to it’, said the Nigerian-Amercian rapper All the noise began when the rapper, real name Olubowale Victor Akintimehin, shared a video on his Instagram where we can see his one-year old daughter, Zyla Moon Oluwakemi, playing around with some cash. The video is so innocent. ‘Spraying’ is something that is done at weddings and birthday parties where the celebrant of the occasion is sprayed with cash delicately as a way to celebrate them. It’s an honour. It’s a sign of love and respect. It’s basically an age-old tradition and very important to Nigerians and many other Africans. In the UK there would be someone at the party who’s sole purpose is to convert your fivers and tenners to American one-dollar notes so that you can spray as much as you want whilst taking advantage of the conversion rates. When Wale was asked what he thought about the criticism he said that people needed to ‘respect other people’s traditions.’ Rightly so. Like many Nigerians, Wale is proud of his heritage and where he comes from. ‘It’s just what we do,’ he said. ‘I never thought for a second that there was anything wrong with it because that’s all I knew when I was growing up.’ http://www.splint.com.ng/2017/08/raining-cash-on-my-daughter-is-part-of.html
