Abia’s VAT figure can be low despite hosting many companies because hosting a company’s factory, branch or outlet does not necessarily mean the VAT is recorded in Abia.
The main reasons are:


Many companies operating in Abia have their headquarters elsewhere.
Historically, companies often filed and remitted VAT centrally from their head offices. Therefore, a company producing or selling goods in Aba might remit its VAT through its Lagos, Abuja or Rivers headquarters. This creates what tax experts call the “headquarters effect.”

So, the ₦8.77 billion figure does not necessarily mean Abia has little commercial activity. It more likely shows that much of Abia’s economy is informal, dominated by smaller enterprises, or that VAT from businesses operating there was attributed to headquarters and sales locations outside the state.

Under Nigeria’s tax reforms effective from 2026, VAT distribution is supposed to give greater recognition to the place of consumption, which may eventually provide a more realistic picture than relying heavily on the location where companies remit their VAT.
