Travel / Too Fat To Fly? Stranded Frenchman’s Ordeal by striker99: 5:22pm On Nov 21, 2013 |
He’s been turned down by planes, trains and even a cruise ship in his quest to return home — and his family says it’s because he has been deemed too fat to travel. Now Frenchman Kevin Chenais’ long and fitful journey is coming to an end. Chenais, who weighs 500 pounds (230 kilograms), says he has been repeatedly refused transport over the past two weeks as he sought to get home to France from the United States. P&O Ferries offered to take him in his ambulance aboard the Spirit of Britain on Wednesday, the final hurdle keeping him from his home near the Swiss border. “I am absolutely tired,” the 22-year-old said as he slumped over in his mobility scooter just before being loaded into the ambulance. Chenais’ mother was outraged by the treatment her son allegedly received, saying he was discriminated against because of his weight. “It’s not the fault of my son to be big. He has a genetic illness,” Christina Chenais said. “We are very happy to go home after this long, distressing and traumatic situation.” Kevin Chenais, centre, is assisted by ambulance staff onto an ambulance at St Pancras in London The odyssey began when British Airways refused to honor his return ticket from the United States, where he spent months receiving medical care for a hormone imbalance. “When we talked about this problem with British Airways that Kevin was too fat … (they said) abandon any intention of coming back to France,” Kevin’s father, Rene, told RTL Radio. “From the fact of his incapacity, his obesity, he was not considered to be a normal being, but more like a problem.” BA acknowledges that it refused to let Chenais board the plane, but said confidentiality rules prevent it from saying why. BA insisted that it does not discriminate against customers for any reason and that the airline provides the option of an extra seat to people who contact them with concerns about seat width. “We respect the privacy of the customer so cannot comment on any changes in circumstance between arrival and departure dates,” the company said in a statement. British Airways declined to say what the changes in circumstance had been. Chenais said Carnival Cruises also rejected his request for a cabin on a trans-Atlantic voyage. The company declined to comment. Kevin Chenais puts on his jacket as he sits in his mobility scooter in front of an ambulance at St P Pancras Virgin Atlantic airlines stepped in to fly him to London, where he had planned to take the Eurostar train home. But Eurostar refused to allow him on board because of safety rules governing travel through the Channel Tunnel: The high-speed train that connects England to France and Belgium requires all passengers to have the ability to be safely evacuated — and Chenais’ obesity-caused lack of mobility made that impossible. “This is a terrible situation,” Eurostar said in a statement. “Our heart goes out to Mr. Chenais and his family who are understandably desperate to return home after being stranded in America.” Eurostar paid for the family’s hotel room and worked with P&O to find a solution. “It’s difficult to imagine the frustration that this gentleman has gone through,” P&O spokesman Chris Laming said in a statement. “But for us, it’s very straightforward, as we are set up to carry people who have medical needs.” The ferry company took Chenais and his family across the English Channel to Calais on Wednesday, one of the last obstacles to his homecoming in the French town of Ferney- Voltaire, 740 kilometers (460 miles) to the southeast. Kevin Chenais, centre, is assisted by ambulance staff onto an ambulance at St Pancras in London ___ Ben Jary contributed to this report.Eurostar says it has refused travel on its train to a Frenchman who was earlier stranded in the United States because he was deemed too fat to fly home. The service that connects England to France and Belgium declined to allow Kevin Chenais on board because of safety rules governing travel through the Channel Tunnel. Eurostar says provisions require all passengers to have the ability to be safely evacuated and Chenais’ immobility makes this impossible. The move piles on the woes for Chenais, who has been struggling to get home after being denied travel home on British Airways. He later flew to Britain on another carrier. Eurostar accommodated Chenais in London at the company’s expense and said Wednesday it is trying to help him get home as soon as possible

Sports / Messi Lauds Ronaldo's Goal-scoring Power by striker99: 4:09pm On Nov 21, 2013 |
Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi praised archrival Cristiano Ronaldo's goal-scoring prowess in an interview published on Thursday as speculation mounted that the Portuguese international could be picked as World Player of the Year. A day after picking up a Golden Boot award for scoring 46 league goals last season, more than any other player in Europe, the 26-year-old Messi paid respect to his Real Madrid rival. "I don't know if Cristiano Ronaldo is at his peak but he is always there scoring goals in all the games and taking part in his club and national side," Messi told Spanish sports daily Marca and other European sports journalists. "He has been doing that for many years and whether he is at his peak or a bit less makes no difference." The 28-year-old Ronaldo is emerging as a favourite to pick up this year's Ballon d'Or for the world's best player over four-time winner Messi. Ronaldo scored a hat-trick on Tuesday as Portugal qualified for their fourth straight World Cup finals and he tops the Spanish league scoreboard so far this season with 16 goals in 13 matches. Messi has 11 goals from eight games in the league this season but has been sidelined for up to eight weeks with a muscle tear in his left hamstring muscle, his third leg injury this season. Messi brushed off comments in the media about his injuries, following some criticism that he should have paced himself better. "What they say about the injury did not worry me and does not worry me because I am used to people talking and saying many things not only about the injury but about pretty much everything," he said. "I am sorry I cannot help my teammates now but it is an injury that heals normally and I will be back next year keen to get started." The Argentine international said there was no chance of his leaving Barcelona despite suggestions that some clubs would be ready to write a blank cheque to sign him. "My intention is to stay with Barcelona for good," Messi said. "I am grateful if what they say is true and there are people interested. It makes you proud that they say such things. But my life is with Barcelona." Despite picking up four World Player of the Year awards, three Golden Boots, and with Barcelona a string of Liga, King's Cup and Champions League victories, Messi said he still dreamed of winning the World Cup with Argentina. "I have had the fortune of winning all the individual and club awards. Getting the World Cup would be a dream for me, for my teammates and for a whole country that has not won in a long time," he said. Argentina have big hopes, Messi said. "We aim to arrive in top form to win the World Cup, which is the dream for the whole of Argentina," he said. Asked about Argentina's biggest rivals, Messi said Brazil, Germany and Spain were widely seen as World Cup favourites, "and then there is always a surprise team that appears". For the Champions League, Messi said he saw Real Madrid and Bayern Munich as Barcelona's most serious challengers. mobi.supersport.com/football/spain/news/131121/Messi_lauds_Ronaldos_goalscoring_power |

Politics / Update On Adaobi: Man Suspected Of Killing Her Was Her Roommate by striker99: 2:48pm On Nov 21, 2013 |
Found more details about 26 year old Adaobi Michella Obih who was found dead on Tuesday Nov. 19th at an apartment in Columbus, Indiana. The man suspected of killing her, 36 year old Ryan Allen Klug, was her roommate. Adaobi was stabbed multiple times and her throat cut. From Fox59.com Police were alerted to Obih’s death after she missed work Monday and Tuesday without notifying anyone. Concerned coworkers contacted her apartment complex to ask about her. Police also contacted the property manager to request a welfare check, according to the arrest affidavit. A maintenance worked went to check on the woman and said, “It’s not good, there is blood everywhere” after going to Obih’s apartment. A neighbor said he noticed that the door to Obih’s garage spot was open and had been open for at least 24 hours. Klug, who police described as Obih’s roommate, parked his vehicle there. The maintenance worker told police there were no signs of forced entry at the apartment and that only two people would’ve had keys: Obih and Klug. The maintenance worker told police he found Obih with a “large amount of blood around her head” and said it appeared clear that she was dead. Police talked to Obih’s boyfriend, who revealed that he’d texted and called her multiple times but never heard back. The last message he received from her was at 12:17 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17. When she failed to respond, he went to her apartment, saw her car in the parking lot and knocked on the door. Obih didn’t answer. A neighbor who lives in the apartment below Obih’s said it sounded like someone was moving furniture during Sunday afternoon. “It went on for more than three minutes,” the neighbor said, adding that it happened shortly before tornado warnings went off for Sunday’s storms. Police said Klug had texted a pastor asking him to call. When the pastor did so, Klug answered and said he couldn’t talk at the time. Further investigation found that Obih had been stabbed multiple times and her throat cut. A blood trail went from the woman’s bedroom to Klug’s, and police said it appeared “the assailant attempted to clean up in the bathroom area belonging to Mr. Klug.” They also found a bloody towel in Klug’s sink. Police located a plastic bag containing a bloody sock and other clothes stained with blood, including blue jeans, boxers and a shirt. Police said the “amount of blood on these items was significant.” Police found a trail of small blood drops leading from the apartment to the garage where Klug parked his vehicle. His 2008 silver Subaru Legacy was not parked in the garage. Klug works for the Indiana Department of Transportation, and police contacted his supervisor, who told them Klug’s behavior had been “off” lately. He sent a text message Sunday saying, “sick tomorrow, then vacation next two weeks.” His supervisor said the message was out of character and also violated the department’s vacation time policy. Klug did not return texts or phone calls, his supervisor said. He didn’t show up at work Monday or Tuesday. Klug’s stepmother and father said they hadn’t heard from him for several days. His brother told police he’d spoken with Klug about two weeks ago. Klug wanted to get back with a girl he’d dated. The relationship ended about a year ago. His brother told Klug to call her; he said Klug discovered she was dating someone else and told him, “I’m losing control.” lindaikeji..com/2013/11/update-on-adaobi-man-suspected-of.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+/OqshX+(Welcome+to+Linda+Ikeji's+Blog)&m=1 |
