Romance / Re: Love And Royalty: Queen Elizabeth II And Prince Philip by StudentPerfect: 3:54pm On Apr 17, 2021
binarymachine:

...
Most (responsible and reasonable: Added by me) men would’ve told the queen-in-waiting to relinquish her crown if she indeed wanted to get married but, certainly not Prince Philip. He met her as a young royalty, loved and respected all that she stood for and, he still married her. He didn’t mind that he’d be addressed as a Prince and she, a Queen but, he still stood by her side; serving in the designated capacity assigned to his new royal status. He (obviously) didn’t mind that he’d have to take orders from the queen as she’s the supreme leader of the British monarchy; all that mattered to him was loving his wife.

Now, imagine this scenario happening in an African setting…….. the man won’t definitely want to be answerable to his wife because, he’ll term it as demeaning and disrespectful. African men love to be “IN CONTROL” and not the other way round so, anything short of that is a no-brainer for them. It’s therefore no surprise that even in a corporate setting; whether privately or publicly owned, if a man and his wife were to work in same or different establishments, he either won’t subscribe to submitting to his wife as his boss (in the event that happens) or, he won’t even fancy the idea of his wife earning more money than he does. He’ll automatically translate it to mean his woman wants to override him.

Queen Elizabeth II and her husband are a typical example of what joint efforts in a marriage should look like. It doesn’t matter who’s earning more or who’s superior in authority to the other; what matters is the peaceful coexistence between both parties. If Prince Philip had insisted on being addressed as King Philip Mountbatten-Windsor because he’s the man of the house, it would’ve turned to an entirely different case cos, the British royal family will ensure this fantasy doesn’t see the light of the next day. He loved his position and served dutifully. Marriage is amazing when both partners look beyond their differences and hinge more on their similarities so they can find a common ground to build upon.

Nonye! Nonye!! Nonye!!! Haba Maybe you lived in London for 2 weeks should not mean you should not think straight or perhaps you dont know anything about history. As for mr, I think the man is not a real man or he does not value what he has. Now I am an African and a very proud African. So don't expect me to think otherwise. My audience is mostly Africans and therefore I am going to use African examples

How will it sound for the next Sultan of Sokoto to renounce his 'crown' and to come and marry the next queen of Ife? or What will you think of the next Olu of Warri to renounce the throne and come and marry the next queen of Benin. Please let's get things in context. When I say queen, I am not talking as the wife of a king but the real ruler. Both of them were monarchs in waiting

Prince Philip was supposed to be the next king in one other country (I can't really remember) and Princess Elizabeth wass the monarch in waiting. He RENOUNCED his claim to the throne in his country. He 'demoted' himself from being a king> Apart from that, there is what we referred to as heritage. Is being a prince in Britain better than being a king in his country. This is a fact and it could be checked. Wikipedia and Google will come in handy here. If this were to happen in Africa, it is the ilk of Nonye that will scream AFRICANS ARE BARBARIC. Potential king demotes himself to become a 'mere' prince. So the headlines will scream

All things being said, it is his personal choice. . One thing that should be noted is that the laws of ascension to the throne over there is clear. His case of being the next king is his country is not under may be. He was supposed to be the next king just as she was supposed to inherit the throne. For the British system, it used to be that males had superior claim to the throne until it was changed a few years back. All things being equal, after Queen Elizabeth is gone, the Prince of Wales; Prince Charles goes to the throne, after him comes Prince Williams.

What does it mean?
1. We forget things over time. If we learn a new thing and we make no attempt to use or reinforce it, we tend to forget it.
2. The biggest drop in retention is higher in the first few days and tapers off as the days go bye. I like to illustrate this with computer system. The RAM is short-lived. If you don’t save, as soon as power is switched off, everything is gone. If you save, they are stored permanently.
So what techniques do we employed to combat the forgetting curve?
Before delving into the technique, let’s discuss some of the common study methods. We have: passive reading, underlining and some others but we will simply stick to re-reading. The most pervasive of these is reading and re-reading. Here is what some researchers have to say about it:
‘Yet not only was repetitive reading the most frequent listed strategy, it was also the strategy more often listed as students’ number one choice, by a large margin’

I am sure it is what you the reader is using. It was the method I used when I was in school. Nobody is saying you should not read, it is READING and RE-READING or (passive reading) that is bad. The method to be used is active repetition with spaced repetition.
We use spaced repetition to ‘solidify’ our learning. Imagine a builder building a house. After laying some bricks, he would put mortar (cement + water + stone) and put more blocks on them. To effectively build the house, he would purse to make sure it solidifying before continuing. We will need to ‘solidify’ our learning before it crumbles.

Hello folks! Sorry for taking forever to update this. I have been terribly busy. From the look of things, I am still going too be busy for some time to come, but I promise to push this on top of the list.
We have several goals in mind. To have great grades in our exams: as many A1’ as possible, to score as high as 350 and above in JAMB and make our loved ones proud of us and have great future. No doubt, these are lofty aspirations. Certainly, these are achievable. You only need to believe in yourself and forget about your past ideas and willingness to try out new things. I believe we are on the same page.

Every student has to face exams. And what is the purpose of examination? To see how well we REMEMBER things we were taught. And one funny thing about our brain is that it loves to FORGET, that is it loves NOT to REMEMBER. So we need to coerce our brain to remember things. The trick to achieving this is what is commonly referred to as spaced repetition or spaced retrieval.

Our brain is really fickle. Have you been in a situation where you read something, really understood it and about three days or a week later, you’ve forgotten more than half of what you read. This is called the ‘Ebbinghaus’ forgetting curve or more simply the Forgetting curve’. Hermann Ebbinghaus in 1885 published his findings. He made 3-syllable nonsensical words, learnt them and see how much he forgot over time.. here is the forgetting curve

Do we really need to split hairs over this? As you rightly said, the calendar created then was kind of faulty but then it was done for historical and to lesser purposr time-accounting purpose. To be able to accurately reference events a particular event has to be taken as baseline.

That is the reason why Anno Mundial (the Year of the World) was created by the Jews. They used the events in Genesis to the accounting. That was far from being perfect. It was in quest for a more perfect one that a new calendar was devised.
Before the epoch of birth of Jesus Christ was adopted, there was the idea of using the founding of Rome and the birth of Julius Ceasar as dates. As you rightly mentioned, there we errors in calculating the birth of Jesus Christ. It was done by human being and there was nothing divine about it.
Two sources of error occurred. First, it was off by 4 years. The calculation done by a human being is in error by 4 years. People also pointed out another thing. The numbering system in vogue then was not Arabic numerals but Romans numerals. The concept of figure 0 (zero) was strange to Romans. Or when you were in Primary school you were taught (I, ii, iii, iv, vi, vii etc) corresponding to (1, 2,3 ,4 ,5, 6,7 etc). if you are born this year, you will celebrate 1 year birthday next year. So Jesus ‘celebrated’ his birthday (technically speaking) the year he was born. That is a bit understandable because Romans don’t have concept of zero.

Things became complicated as times go on. There were many calendars that are used by different countries all over the world. In those days, Julian calendar was the de-facto but it had problems and now we (most countries) now use Gregorian calendar system. If the OP is splitting hairs on this, I wonder what he would have done if s\he were alive in 1752 in England. To synchronise its calendar with the rest of Europee, 11 days ‘were lost’ in history.

Ordinarily, you would have expected Wednesday 2nd September 1752 to be followed by Thursday 3rd September, 1752. No! Thursday 14th September 1752 followed Wednesday 2nd September 1752. 11 days Thusday, Thursday 3rd September, 1752 through Tuesday, 1st of September never exited in British calendar. It is needless bothering about this

I feel excited writing this. This is a bright new day, bright new month and bright new year. Happy new year to everyone. I admit, I can be very (and at times foolishly) sentimental and that is the real reason why I have delayed creating this post till now. You will agree with me, I hope, that Jan 1st is a very important day. As George Orwell wrote a long time ago: All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others. Yes it is true that it contains 24 hours like other days, yet we humans make it very important. So I have created this important post today. This post, I hope, will be a great help to somebody out there. If it helps just a single person, then I have achieved my goal. Do you really want outstanding success in your exams: straight A’s in your internal exams, straight A’s in WASCE\NECO, 350 and above in UTME and high grade in post UTME? Then read on
2021 will be for the bold. I invite you to be bold. Don’t take No for answer. You need to have that burning zeal to excel. You may think having outstanding success is not possible, but I assure you, it is do-able. Once again, welcome to the year of academic excellence. Remember, you need that zeal, the passion to succeed.
We will use Applied Science, specifically Psychology. We will apply findings and experiments done in Psychology to help. There are some reading techniques that we will introduce. For starters, most people reading this post are using passive reading to study.
Passive reading is just very inefficient. I will introduce another reading technique. This method is guaranteed to help you immensely. We will also employed technology as well, specifically ICT or computer technology. I hope and pray that when the results are out I will be able to celebrate you.
This is what I have for you. Once again, welcome to the new exciting world.
Please note: I will be out of town for a couple of days, and as soon as I come back, we will continue.

I have been watching this thread for some time. It is not moving at all. This is the period when people should their hands 'really dirty' (hope you understand what I mean?) with hard work. I guess ASSU strike is taking its toll and the general uncertainty in the land. These are tough times to live in Nigeria.
I have carefully gone through the posts made. Don’t let anybody discourage you this is the time to start the preparation. Actually, preparation ought to have started much earlier. However it is not too late.
