Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aminu Wali, has said talks between Nigeria and terrorist group Boko Haram aimed at securing the release of over 200 abducted girls have not been jeopardized by a surge in violence.

Wali said on Monday that negotiations were continuing this week in Chad to try to free the school girls, who were seized by the Islamic militants in April from Chibok, Borno state.

“There are still negotiations going on and we expect a lot of progress to be made. Soon we will announce exactly where we are,” Wali told journalists after meeting French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius.

Nigeria’s military announced a ceasefire 10 days ago ahead of the negotiations, but since then bombings, killings and kidnappings have continued.

Suspected Boko Haram militants killed at least 17 people and abducted dozens in a series of attacks in the central region of Nigeria’s northeast Borno state over the weekend. At least 25 girls were kidnapped from a remote northeastern town a few days earlier.

However, Nigerian authorities say five years of insurgency have become mixed up with broader criminality, and that Boko Haram itself is highly fragmented.

“Boko Haram are saying that those ones (attacks) were done by other rogues and criminals … Kidnapping has being going on in Nigeria for some time … by miscreants,” Wali said.

He added that the government also suspected “dissidents of the main Boko Haram body” were trying to scupper the ceasefire.

“But certainly this is not something that will threaten the negotiations going on. And we will make an effort also to bring back those that have been kidnapped,” Wali said.

Chadian officials also say they are optimistic about the deal, which could involve a prisoner swap, although Nigerians will be reluctant to release dangerous individuals who could cause more carnage down the line.

Nigerians, weary of a conflict that has killed many thousands since Boko Haram launched its uprising for an Islamic state in 2009, appear skeptical of the alleged truce.

But what counts is ultimately whether the faction with which Nigeria is conversing has direct control over the girls. Parents of the abducted girls say they have doubts, but remain hopeful.

The Presidency has responded to Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s tirade against the government at Saturday’s APC Mega Rally. Amaechi had, at the rally, launched a diatribe in which he berated the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN), the president, and the PDP.

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Johnson Bamidele Olawumi, has appeared before a House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions investigative public hearing to answer questions on the four thousand Naira online registration fee being paid by prospective corps members.

The NYSC was dragged to the House of Representatives by the Uzor Azubuike-led Say No Campaign civil society coalition which protested against the fee.

While responding to the petition, Olawumi, who alluded to the poor welfare of the corp members, disclosed that the federal government has approved N500 as feeding allowance for each corp member per day.

He also disclosed that over N800 million was required to setup the computer registration system the NYSC is presently using for its online registration.

He explained that the fees will service a private sector-driven build, operate and transfer agreement. He said the registration equipment will be installed at NYSC offices nationwide.

He said the process was approved by the Bureau of Public Procurement with a certificate of no objection.

While noting that the N4,000 for the online registration is voluntary, he said rather than request for money to install the infrastructure, he would prefer to canvass for increment of the current N19,800 allowance being paid to prospective Corp members.

In his presentation, Mr. Ezenwa Nwagwu of ‘Say No Campaign’ called for the “reversal of the proposed N4,000 fee payment and where payment has been made, a refund to the prospective Corp members.”

Nwagwu stressed the need to “re-examine the laws establishing the NYSC that seems to have made the Director General of the Corp an exclusive preserve of serving military officers.”

On September 30, federal lawmakers launched an inquest into the controversial N4,000 online registration fee and consequently urged NYSC to suspend the policy.

Hon. Hassan Saleh (Benue/PDP) in lead debates on a motion moved on the matter described the NYSC policy as “insensitive and exploitative”.

The Secretary General of terrorist group Boko Haram, Mallam Danladi Ahmadu, who represented the group and negotiated a ceasefire agreement with the Nigerian government has said that the agreement with the Federal Government is still valid.

Ahmadu disclosed that the final meeting between the group and the Federal Government to finally seal the ceasefire agreement has been scheduled for Monday in Ndjamena, Chad, and to be supervised by the Chadian leader, Idriss Darby.

Danladi Ahmadu, who spoke in the Hausa service of the Voice of America on Friday, affirmed that the Chibok Girls would surely be released on Monday to the Chadian President, Idriss Darby, for onward presentation to the Nigerian government.

He added that an enlarged meeting of the group has been fixed for the weekend to prepare ground for the Monday meeting with the Federal government, affirming that the final ceasefire and the release of the Chibok girls are promises that will surely be fulfilled by the group.

Ahmadu also disclosed to VOA that the group and the Federal government are in close consultations over arrangements for the Monday meeting in Chad.

Commenting on the latest kidnap of over 40 women and girls in the border villages between Adamawa and Borno states, the Secretary General maintained that as far as Boko Haram is concerned it is not aware of the latest kidnap and attacks.

He added that the group is investigating the latest kidnap and attacks to determine the involvement of its members, admitting that many anti-social groups have infiltrated Boko Haram.

Danladi Ahmadu stated that political thugs, armed robbers, kidnappers, hired assassins and other anti-social groups now parade themselves as members of the sect, but was quick to add that if the ceasefire agreement is sealed all the groups would fizzle out.

It will be recalled that no fewer than 50 women and girls were abducted by unknown gunmen from Gartu in Michika, Adamawa state and Waga Mongoro, a border village between Madagali in Adamawa and Gwoza in Borno state after a ceasefire agreement with the insurgents was announced by Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh.

There are some things that make a résumé look unprofessional, outdated or distracting to hiring managers, who have only moments to scan the document. An objective

Résumé objectives never help and often hurt. Not only do they feel antiquated, but they’re all about what you want, rather than what this stage of the hiring process is all about — what the employer wants. Your résumé should be about showing your experience, skills and accomplishments. If you want to talk about how this particular position is the perfect next step in your career, use the cover letter for that.

Short-term jobs

Short-term jobs raise red flags for hiring managers. They’ll wonder if you were fired, couldn’t do the work or had trouble getting along with co-workers. Plus, it’s unlikely that a few months on a job will show any real accomplishments or advancement. One exception to this rule is if the job was short because it was designed that way, such as contract or political campaign work. Those won’t raise the sorts of questions above, because you’ll have an explanation that doesn’t reflect on you poorly.

A functional format

Many employers hate functional résumés, which list skills and abilities without including a chronological job history. These types of résumés easily mask limited work experience or significant work gaps and make it difficult to understand a candidate’s career progression. For most hiring managers, functional résumés are an immediate red flag that you might be hiding something.

Your photo

Unless you’re applying for a job as a model or actor, photos of yourself have no place on your résumé. Your appearance has nothing to do with your ability to do the job, so including a photo comes across as naive and unprofessional.

A fancy design

Here’s what most hiring managers think upon seeing a résumé with an unusual design or gaudy color scheme: Does this candidate think his or her skills and achievements won’t speak for themselves? Does this person not understand what employers are looking for? Does he or she put an inappropriate emphasis on appearances over substance? (The obvious exception to this rule is if you’re applying for design jobs.)

Subjective descriptions

Your résumé is for experience and accomplishments only. It’s not the place for subjective traits, such as “great leadership skills” or “creative innovator.” Smart employers ignore anything subjective that applicants write about themselves, because so many people’s self-assessments are wildly inaccurate. Your résumé should stick to objective facts.

Any mention of high school

If you’re more than a few years past your high school graduation date, employers don’t care which high school you attended or how much you accomplished while you were there. Keep any mention of high school off your résumé.

Extra pages

If you’re in your 20s, your résumé should only be one page; there’s not enough experience to justify a second one. If you’re older, two pages are fine, but you go over that limit at your own peril. Hiring managers may initially spend only 20 or 30 seconds on your application, so extra pages are either ignored or they dilute the impact of the others. Your résumé should be for highlights, not extensive detail.

Your salary

Résumés don’t typically include a salary history, so candidates who include it come across as naive. And by sharing that information unbidden, you’ll compromise your negotiating power later.

Any mention of references

Yes, that includes “references are available upon request.” You don’t need to say you’ll provide references if asked, because that goes without saying. You’re not causing any harm by including that somewhat-dated statement, but it takes up space you could use for something else.

Mali’s health ministry on Thursday said the country had its first confirmed case of Ebola after a two-year-old girl who had recently been in Guinea tested positive for the virus.

“Today Mali has its first imported case of the Ebola virus,” the ministry said in a statement. The girl was diagnosed after she arrived at a hospital in the western town of Kayes on Wednesday, it added.

The child and those she has come into contact with have been put in isolation.

The identity of the infected girl was not released.

Health ministry spokesman Markatche Daou said that she had travelled to neighbouring Guinea with her grandmother and that the authorities were aware of her itinerary.

The ministry said the girl had visited Kissidougou, a town in the southern part of Guinea where the Ebola outbreak was first identified in December 2013.

“Everyone who had contact with the girl is under medical surveillance,” he said.

The west African nations of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone have borne the brunt of the deadly Ebola virus.

According to World Health Organization figures 10,000 people have been infected and almost 4,900 have died of the disease in west Africa.

Mali’s health ministry said all necessary steps had been taken to avoid the spread of Ebola, and called on residents to remain calm.

However it warned against all unnecessary travel to affected areas and urged hygiene and safety measures to be respected.

In April there were some suspected Ebola cases in Mali, but these proved to be false alarms.

In August Senegal also registered a confirmed Ebola case, imported from Guinea. That case did not spread and last week Senegal was declared Ebola-free.

A group of South Sudanese women peace activists has suggested that men in the civil war-torn country be denied sex until they stop fighting, AFP reports.

The suggestion emerged after around 90 women, including several members of South Sudan’s parliament, met in the capital Juba this week to come up with ideas on how to “to advance the cause of peace, healing and reconciliation”.

A key suggestion was to “mobilise all women in South Sudan to deny their husbands conjugal rights until they ensure that peace returns,” organisers said in a statement Thursday.

Other proposals included finding ways to meet the wives of President Salva Kiir and his arch-rival, rebel chief Riek Machar, to “ask them to join the search for peace and reconciliation by impressing upon their husbands to stop the war”.

Thousands of people have been killed and almost two million have fled the fighting between government troops, mutinous soldiers and tribal militia forces.

Civilians have been massacred, patients murdered in hospitals and people killed while sheltering in churches.

Almost 100,000 people are sheltering in squalid UN peacekeeping bases fearing they will be killed if they leave.

Tobias Atari Okori, from the government-backed South Sudan Peace and Reconciliation Commission, acknowledged that the idea highlighted that people were desperate for the war to end.

“People are experiencing great suffering, and it is the women, children and the aged who are suffering the worst,” he told AFP.

The UN special envoy on sexual violence Zainab Bangura said this month the levels of rape are the worst she had ever seen.

Political and military leaders have repeatedly broken promises made under intense international pressure, including during visits to South Sudan by UN chief Ban Ki-moon and US Secretary of State John Kerry.

Earlier this month, a group of 19 major aid agencies warned that while massive food drops had helped avert famine for now, the threat remained and would continue to worsen the longer the war continues.

Desmond Elliot 'Olusola'

Ekekeee’s Emmanuel Nwachukwu caught up with actor Desmond Elliot in Surulere where he was scheduled to have an interactive session with young people in the constituency which he seeks to represent at the Lagos State legislature if he wins in 2015. Desmond Elliot is one of the many other Nigerians in the entertainment industry making a foray into politics, a move that has attracted them lots of criticisms on social media. We took him up on this, the sudden appearance of ‘’Olusola’’ as his middle name on his campaign posters, why he chose APC, Boko Haram and other interesting issues.

It’s an exciting read.

So we began by asking him,

Why are you going into politics? You are popular enough. Why politics?

I’ve always been in politics, maybe not participating or campaigning for myself in any political office. But I’ve always been in politics. I’ve worked in governments, different state governments, you know, up to the presidency. So yes, I’ve always been in politics. And, basically, I know it’s time to contribute my own quota. I’ve been on it for many years. So I just thought that this is the right time.

What do you think you can do as a member of state legislature?

There’s a whole lot. First you need fresh ideas, fresh mind. We need to discuss a whole lot of issues. Basically, I’ll always say, if you’ve stayed a number of years and you’ve not done so much or this is the much you’ve done, then give opportunity to others to do theirs. Because this is nation building we’re talking about. A lot of us have grown, been exposed, been informed, have acquired a lot of knowledge, so to speak. And then we need to gain experience of also being able to lead. And then we’ve been leaders in our little framework, in what we do, so we believe it’s time for some of us who are interested. Now, it’s not for everybody, not everybody is interested, not everyone is serious. But, I can only speak for myself. It’s something I’ve been working on for a couple of years. And we’ve been doing things too on the side. Now is time to affect a vast majority of people. So this is why I’m into politics.

Why did Desmond choose APC?

APC is about change. It’s a new party, it’s a merger of parties, and the manifesto is fantastic. It’s a bit of the ideology. And I believe I’m one of those who stand up for the youths. I will represent the youths, represent my industry as an actor. I believe a lot has to be said for the youths and we don’t have it happening now, happening the way it should. So there’s a lot you can put forward on the table. More so, the fact that we need to grow from somewhere, so I’d rather grow with a party that has experienced people, and has come together to share a common ground.

Say one thing you think about the APC that isn’t right

That isn’t right? That they are not in government right now. That’s not right.

What will Desmond do if he doesn’t win?

I believe in the party. I believe in the manifesto of the party. I believe in the electorate. I’m one who speaks my mind. If there’s a derailment, thank God the party gives you opportunity to talk, so you talk. Oh, we are derailing from what we set out to do. The manifesto is incredible. It promises a million jobs in four years. It promises social welfare which we’ve not had since the period of Jakande, where people actually get a minimum amount of N5000. Now do you know that an average Nigerian’s per capita income is N160? Now we are promising that, including that money you’re earning, we are going to be giving you N5000 every month…to over 25 million people. That’s social welfare. Now, it means, for you not to do that, you have to create jobs. Do you understand? In addition we also talking about low-cost houses. I’m not talking about low-cost houses that rich people will take. The houses will be allocated to the poor. So, we have so much. I can go on and on. So that’s what encouraged me. And I said, this is where I want to be.

Nigerians direct all their criticisms to the executive arm of government. Little is said about the legislature. Is the legislative arm of government really powerful or is it weak?

It is not weak. But you see, because we are very concerned about the basic simple things of life, food, clothes to wear, a roof over our head. Those are things that they look up to people doing administrative work. But the legislative is equally as strong because we have to talk about bills. We have so much. Maybe not as strong as the executive, but then they are just as important.

Why do people like me want to be in the legislative arm? Because there’s a lot of lobbying, a lot interfacing, so you need people like me there. You need people like me there because at the end of the day, it’s the little you can give to your people, to make them happy.

We’ve witnessed a huge turnout of Nollywood stars and Nigerian musicians into politics recently, and there’s this impression that music isn’t selling for them, movies aren’t working for them any longer, hence the rush into politics where the money is. What’s your view on this?

I’ll ask a very simple question: How are they running their campaign? Where is the money? So it’s one thing to say, I want to run for this. The other thing is, how do you sponsor yourself? So if music and films like they say is not moving any more, here’s what I think, here’s what I know. I lot of us have interpersonal relationships via social media, and films and the way we behave. We have interpersonal relationships with the grassroots. So we know how they feel. Now all people from the grassroots can’t come out, some have to come out. And do not forget, entertainment contributed immensely to the growth of the economy by way of employment. We brought in billions of naira in terms of employment, taking people off the streets by giving them jobs.

So tell me why we can’t have one two three four five six, out of the millions of people in that industry, representing that industry, representing people. There’s nothing wrong with it. All I want to say is, which is why this meeting is important, let’s stop criticizing the young people who want to come out. Let’s look at what the people have done before that hasn’t worked and let’s ask those who are coming out, ‘what can you do that’ll be different’? Ask them what can they do that’ll be different. That is one of the reasons why I’m having this interactive session. Because our progress is so derailed, and it’s because our leaders have failed even in giving orientation to the people. Do you understand? Corruption has gone so deep and it’s crazy. That’s why a lot of us now rely on entertainment. Let’s have entertainment, let’s enjoy music, let’s watch films, to just cool ourselves. Meanwhile, you’ve forgotten the fact that you have children who will grow.

Ok. Let’s go national. News broke about two days ago that the government has had a ceasefire deal with Boko Haram. What’s your take on this?

Good news. But let’s see what happens in the next couple of weeks.

That sounds like you don’t believe it?

No no no! It happened the first time, and we waited. We are waiting. But we have to see when there’s peace in the country. We love peace. So let the government do what it takes to make it happen. For me, I’m for our progress. So let’s see how it goes.

So for you it’s not about the political party? It’s about the common good of the nation?

Common good and who can deliver it. If you stay 15 years and you haven’t done it, let someone else try.

We’ve watched you in movies since many years ago, and then just recently, we learnt your name is Olusola. How did that happen?

In all my interviews… all my interviews, when they ask me what my names are, I’ve always mentioned Olusola. But I don’t want to go into the politics of why I had to use Desmond. Because all through my primary school years till I got to the university, I was always known as…I was called Sola. I was called Sola in primary school. Yes. I have my credit card, everything has Sola in my name. Firstly is the fact that I wanted to be seen as a Nigerian, which is why I did Yoruba films, I did Akwa Ibom films, I featured in Igbo films, I speak Hausa. So it was first to decolonize myself. And make everybody see me as a Nigerian, first and foremost. Secondly is, where I was working at, my chosen profession, and where I was getting my work from. I just didn’t want to put any tribalistic thing, so I decided to use my English name. Now, coming to politics, I’m coming back home. A lot of people still know me as Sola. Okay, so I include it. It’s not an adoption just because I’m running in Lagos state. I am a true son of the soil, I’m from Lagos Island and my house is there in Surulere. Anybody can go there to verify. But it still doesn’t change the fact that I am a Nigerian. And then I’m eligible to vote and be voted for.

At least five persons have been reported dead after a bomb went off at the popular Azare Motor Park in Bauchi on Wednesday night.

An unconfirmed number of people are also reported to have been injured and cars damaged. The bomb reportedly went off at about 10pm by the exit gate of the park, killing five persons and injuring many others.

The police are yet to confirm the incident at the time of filing this report.
