That's what Nigeria needs: an entrepreneur who sees value and opportunities, is prepared to take risks and invest in it.
Not the lazy businessmens who exploit corruption by importing dirty fuel into the country, refuse to invest in production (refineries, petrochemicals, fertilisers)
Can you imagine where Nigeria would be if the country had a Dangote in industries such as steel, aluminium, solar, Lithium, Pharmaceuticals, Biotech, telecom, electronics, healthcare, banking, agriculture, and transportation?
TooMuchStuff: Terrorist Fulanis killed by vigilante but because of backlash from power that be..
..it suddenly became "By mistake"
Why do we continue to have Fulani settlers in Nigeria? The Fulani are already blocking fuel suppliers in Mli, and the wars in the Sahel are driving these troublemakers into Nigeria.
Ilekokonit: Like play like play these Republican Lawmakers in America will embolden Trump to come and invade Nigeria if Nigerian Politicians don't stand up and counter this FALSE NARRATIVE by ignorant American lawmakers of christian genocide in Nigeria.
What is happening in Nigeria is a mix of religious extremism, terrorism, land conflict, and governance failure, rather than a coordinated, state-backed genocide.
Why is Nigerian security always invisible during Islamic extremist attacks on Christain? Why are millions of Nigerians in IDP camps?
The USA's concerns stem from self-interest and the Nigerian government's failure to do its job.
But it's for interest of the Igbos to know that the hatred Yorubas have for them is a thousand times greater than an hurricane
The hatred of those useless Yoruba people on the Twitter post. Focus your accusation on the individual culprits that are xenophobic and bigoted against Igbos, and leave the majority Yoruba out of it, or else you too are a bigot.
Most Yoruba, like other ethnic groups, want to get through the day and survive, and have no time to hate anyone.
nairalanda1: Sharia has always been in the north, what happened was extension to the criminal aspect of the law.
Otherwise , it was always there. The inclusion of sharia in the 1979 constitution led to a big argument at the constitutional drafting level (1978 constituent assembly) which led to several compromises being made. Sharia was for states that wanted it , and it was to be restricted to civil cases only
Family sharia laws were always in the North. Political and judicial Sharia law was implemented only in 1999, during the transition to democracy in Northern.
The introduction of extreme Islamic values is the fundamental reason why Northern Nigeria has completely collapsed as a society or region. Northern Nigeria is more comparable to Northern Sudan, Somalia or Afghanistan, a complete and utter mess.
Sharia law was introduced in the northern Nigerian state of Zamfara in September 1999, initiated by then-Governor Ahmed Sani Yerima following the return to civilian rule. This move was followed by 12 other Muslim-majority states, which also began implementing Sharia as a main body of civil and criminal law, leading to a significant expansion of Islamic legal and penal codes in the region.
Beginning of implementation: The process started in September 1999 in Zamfara State, as detailed by BBC World Service and BBC News. Spread to other states: Other northern states followed, and by late 2002, 12 states had adopted Sharia law.
Legal changes: States established Islamic legal institutions and implemented new laws, such as penal codes that included traditional punishments for certain offenses like theft and fornication.
Political context: The move was part of a broader political and cultural movement in the region to reassert Northern Muslim identity, though it sparked significant controversy and violence.
Constitutional implications: While the Nigerian Constitution promotes secularism and freedom of religion, the federal government did not challenge the states' implementation of Sharia, which was to apply only to Muslims in those states.
The sharia law enshrined in the 12 northern states was an expansion of sharia courts into criminal cases,as defined by Islamic law ( hence the two women who were sentenced to be stoned to death because adultery is a crime under sharia).
This one na civil case or civil sharia which has been on the books for a long time, before 1999. Used to form part of the northern regional penal code since colonial times. Abuja falls under the old northern region
I suspect the man's tenant is a Muslim. The palava is the court not checking who owned the shop. Big mistake
There won't be change in the laws. Both sides find this as a useful bugbear
Sharia law was enshrined in the 12 Northern states, not in Abuja. The root cause of Northern Nigeria's hopelessness was the introduction of political sharia in 1999
Racoon: Of course financial indiscipline and clueless ineffective leadership are worst combo that can never take a country through a good economic tragectory.
Meanwhile, the same IMF goaded the same failed govt with its many neck-constricting unfeasible economic policies. Imagine telling govt to remove subsidy on electricity fuel and increase taxation. God save Nigeria from the jackals feeding on it's dying carcass.
Those IMF policies were necessary to stop Nigeria from falling off a cliff. Had Nigeria continued to protect the naira or fund fuel subsidies, the country would have been bankrupt by now, and the Naira would have been N10000 to $1 in the parallel market. Nigerians forget that the parallel value of the Naira under the Buhari government was close to N900.
Tinubu's failure is that he has failed to transition from macroeconomic discipline to microeconomic discipline. Peter OBi is correct when he said that. “Our economy continues to suffer from poor policy choices, corruption, and waste,”. Tinubu is wasting resources on corrupt welfare solutions, building a coastal highway the country cannot afford, has failed to address electricity issues, and has been a complete failure in food and security.
My issue with Peter Obi is that he said he would not have floated the Naira immediately, when it is now seen as the best solution for Nigeria, given Argentina's stage currency flotation, which has now been seen as a failure.
Peter Obi is also politically very weak; he has no control over the political party (LP) that he represents, and his attempt to forge a coalition with Atiku has completely failed. The North will never accept him as the leading presidential candidate; hence, Peter Obi will repeat the success he had in 2023.
Smartcitizen: Anytime this people from the west hears this news, they are always happy and that's why Tinubu is not ready to do anything about it.
How did the north offended Tinubu and his people?
Nawaoo!
🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱
Tinubu didn't introduce Sharia law. Tinubu did tell Northern Nigeria not to send their children to school, and Tinubu didn't tell Northern Nigerians not to develop their mines, farms, and industries.
The North is directly responsible for the violence; they should stop rehabilitating terrorists and be prepared to fight back.
Softmirror: The trucks on our roads was a ploy by the military back then to make their friends super rich by allocating so much for them to import trucks and tankers to transport petroleum products and others. Ask the likes of Chachangi.
It was delibrate to kill the railway system.
The military was more interested in consolidated power to the centre rather then economic development.
I suggest you read "Why Nations Fail" by Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson; you will appreciate why it is virtually impossible to develop Nigeria.
Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty
nairalanda1: Mining cannot meet any country's needs. Because as I said, they don't control the price
It's basically also.why we don't earn enough revenue from oil too.
Hence industrialized economy is best
Australia and Chile have both industrialised through their agriculture, mining and service industries. Industrialised doesn't just mean manufacturing; it means having an organised and educated society that can manage the country effectively, from healthcare and education to transportation and the central government.
In the 1980s, manufacturing made up 44% of Nigeria's GDP. The country had a textile industry valued at $12 billion. Nigeria assembled 150,000 automobiles and was on the threshold of becoming a developing industrialising nation with steel, aluminium, and petrochemical companies under development to support the mature manufacturing industry.
So what happened? The country didn't have an effective supply chain to support the process industries; t
nairalanda1: Ivory coast(the 2002-6 war) and senegal(the Zinguchor issue) have had the same issues between Muslim North and christian south, with secular constitution, just like Nigeria...
Plus mining don't mean anything in today's world. I mean, Niger has been mining Uranium for decades, yet they use the revenue to import, and don't have a nuclear power station. And ye think the other countries won't do the same? Sell their minerals and use revenue to import? At prices they don't set.., and never favour them? Na so we end up in debt before now.
You just made my point, the Nigerien mining industry generates revenue to import its needs. Northern Nigeria doesn't even try to generate anything. Instead every 4 years a fulani man that has not contributed anything want to be president
we will end up with at least 4 mini Nigerias, or even as many as 13 mini nigerias...because the problem is most of you guys idea of development is that we sell resources, share the money and import.
Also, many of those countries that come out of nigeria will need money (and splitting nigeria does not mean the end of your IMF obligations re debt)...and it will come from tax. And most of you don't like taxes....palava 2
Low money means you won't have the means to fight insecurity, provide jobs etc...palava 3.
That's why we are underdeveloped in the first place. That's why Nigeria cannot work, nor can the countries that come out it too work. Most Nigerians think that the world owes them a living. Your state wants to charge tax, you cry oppressor, your local disco wants to charge cost reflective tarrif, you cry oppressor. You want free stuff, and then you wonder why the debt is balloning. You support the corrupt, and wonder why leaders no dey rule us well.
IN short, you go cry we are too poor. Well, country made of people that are too poor to pay market tarrif for power, tolls for roads, income tax, higher tax to gdp , set up industrial development....etc....and want someone to share money to them, are broke countries. That is why nigeria is not working.
But I think you want tribal related anarchy , so enjoy.
Unfortunately, Nigeria must either split or decentralise. There is a reason why the Ivory Coast and Senegal(secular) are more successful than Mali and Burkina Faso.
Northern Sharia (Islamic) culture is not compatible with the modern secular culture that has been adopted in Southern Nigeria.
The fact that the majority of Northern Nigeria's sources of funding come from oil and taxes from the south is an indication that the North cannot develop on its own, which means that Nigeria will never fully develop.
Even Mali, B Faso and Niger are now developing their mining industry while the North waits for handout.
They are becoming so annoying these days, they suddenly forgot they also stole from us .
They should go to hell please!!
What did they steal from Nigeria? Nigeria has been independent for over 65 years, blessed with oil, gold, arable land and a young population, yet this man continues to blame the White man.
Nigeria need to evolve, stop asking for help and blaming others, it will get us nowhere. A Nigerian, Dangote, built the biggest refinery in black Africa using loans from the UK, yet the same Nigerians are trying to destroy his business.
kettykin: I knew it must be onye igbo . My sincere prayer is that every igbo person will find themselves in countries, businesses , industries where there hard work will be better appreciated and rewarded
Typical tribalist. Why can the Igbo be as successful in Nigeria
zero8zero: This is after getting $20 billion loan from the world bank earlier. The finishing specialists/Bitter Obidients said Nigeria should go to Milei and study Argentina economy 😂
Peter Obi also stated that he would gradually float the Naira currency, like Argentina is currently doing. What Tinubu did in 2023 is what Goodluck should have done in 2012; GEJ should have listened to his economic advisors and not the useless opposition(Tinubu/Buhari/Atiku) and useless labour union.
Jokerman: But honestly who decided to lump various tribes together into a single country?
No shared language, Culture, Ideas, beliefs, unity.
If there's no unity, the country can't get to where it is supposed to be.
Every tribe in Nigeria shoulda have their own country
The truth is that very few tribes have the capacity to be successful on their. The North was a mess before colonisation and is still is today, because of the feudal nature of Fulani domination over the conquesred majority ethnic groups.
But why is Dangote refinery always in the news? He is just one out of supposedly many.
What is NNPC doing?
What about Port Harcourt refinery? What about kanuna refinery?
What about all the so-called modular refineries setup by past administration too?
Why always just calling out a private refinery developed by a business man? Why can't the government just be responsible?
Nigerians are a hopeless people; they know that their government is ineffective, so they are looking for a saviour to solve the problems, instead of calling out the unions and IPMAN, who claim the refineries are operational.
Nigeria has two senior staff unions, PENGASSAN, and one junior staff union, NUPENG.
federal9: This is what happens when tribalism and politics take over people's mind.
Let's keep hating on Peter Obi, tribalism, and other stuff while we get taken by Bandicts
I pray we all survive to see how Nigeria will turn out to be after bad politicians have been eradicated legally.
Peter Obi is a useless politician and would have been a total failure, worse than Tinubu. Didn't Peter Obi say that he would remove currency control gradually, similarly to what Javier Gerardo Milei (Argentine President) did, and now see how the Argentine economy is tanking?
The North wanted political Sharia Law in 2001, and now they have got full Sharia, as the Sultan of Sokoto stated that J/ihad means a good deed. I'm tired of Northern Nigerians complaining about a system that they supported .
Godriddens, there is nothing Tinubu can do, Northern Nigerians refused education and secular law and cannot complain
Princedapace: I am actually in support of this move. This does not make me ass licker of whites. I support them for loving them selves unlike us here where we hate, fight, and disregard each other becus of tribe. So, is there any difference between racism and tribalism? None.
LagosOrigin: I wish him quick recovery. But why are APC tinubu covering up his sickness?
In sane clime, the health status of political appointees are made public . From the president to his political appointees . But here in Nigeria under tinubu, the health status of political appointees and their principal is kept away from public.
In a sane country. The minister of finance would be replaced immediately. Nigeria has been captured from corrupt unions to a corrupt presidency.
Lanruze: This new investment is a birth of the PIA initiated by President Muhammed Buhari.
The credit goes to late PMB and not PBAT.
The unbundling of roles, responsibilities and tasks of the Upstream (Exploration), Midstream (Refining) and Downstream (Distribution) has made investments more attractive in the Upstream sector.
Shell had announced this investment since last year with a total of $5B but has just concluded the first tranche of the $2B. This investment has been captured as an FDI inflow since last year.
Them go whine you (Propagandist) but please no panic.
The OBJ government created PIA; GEJ sat on it, but credit goes to Buhari for putting it into law. However, it was the Tinubu government that enabled the law to work, with the removal of oil subsidies and generous packages for investors. The reason Shell is investing in gas is that it will acquire a majority stake of 51%.
Scorpio99: Crypto is too volatile bla bla bla. That is only a line you will use for those who don't know about crypto. As the volatility leads to losses, so does it lead to gain as well.
About 3 years ago, the same crypto went down to 18k dollars, it rebounded to 60k and above and just before the recent careless statement was sitting above 120k dollars. That is almost a 600% increase in just a little over 3 years.
The last time Nvidia was valued at 300 billion dollars was in 2021. Today it is a 4 trillion dollars company. That translates to a 1300% increase in value.
In the same 2021, bitcoin was valued at a little below 4000 dollars. Today, it is currently at 110,000 dollars. That translates to almost 2500% increase in value. That is almost double folds of the profit of Nvidia.
Despite the volatility of the crypto market, do your maths and tell me which one of the two has been a better investment since 2021 that you bought your Nvidia stocks!!!!
Despite all the current brouhaha, only those who sell are the losers. It is never a loss until you sell!!!
The best investment is one with less exposure to wide volatility. You can make a fortune in crypto or lose everything.
If you have an appetite for high risk and volatility, crypto is the best market for you. Just ensure that you inform any potential investors of the risks they will be exposed to.
Scorpio99: The same Nvidia that lost around 229 billion dollars? 🤣🤣 When you finish deceiving yourself, we are here
I bought Nvidia when it was a $300 billion company, and now it's a $4 trillion company. Please do your financial analysis. If I sold my shares last week, how much do you think I would have made?
Scorpio99: Be lying to yourself there. Those who know the truth are aware that stocks (Forex) was the market that last 1.6 trillion dollars. Crypto lost 19 billion dollars.
silverlinen: Make your research well brr. Stocks and forex are two different things entirely. And I'll advise you to go into one.
You are wasting your time with him; he is headstrong, always looking for easy and quick returns that require extensive research and risk management.
Scorpio99: You keep saying nonsense. The stocks you claimed you invested in was the market that lost 1.6 trillion dollars. Crypto lost 19 billion dollars!!!
I have made a fortune on gold, buying the product when it was 1800 and selling it last week at 4000. I have sold my position in the Mag 7 stocks (Nvidia, Meta). I use trading platforms such as Trading 212, eToro, CMC and IG Index.
Continue exposing yourself to a volatile market that is no different from a Ponzi scheme.
Scorpio99: Those who paid your school fees will be turning in their graves right now ☹️☹️
Those who paid my school fees have benefited from their investment. Instead of buying crypto, I invested in stocks, shares, and gold, and the returns have significantly transformed my wealth. No crazy and stupid volatile swings that have wiped out many people's crypto assets
