Investment / MMM Membership Grows Despite Reps Order To Security Agents by SundayOmeje(m): 8:31pm On Nov 25, 2016 |
Some Abuja residents on Thursday said that they have benefited immensely from the popular financial programme, MMM Nigeria Scheme, and have no intention of leaving the scheme anytime soon. The Mavrodi Mondial Movement popularly known as MMM has gained popularity among Nigerians as the programme promises a monthly payment of 30 per cent interest on loans provided by participants. This is against the backdrop of the House of Representatives order in November that operators of the scheme should be arrested to protect Nigerians from financial devastation. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in spite of the order, MMM’s membership had continued to grow. Some residents who spoke to NAN said that MMM was very beneficial to Nigerians. Ebube osakwe, a civil servant told NAN that she doesn’t see the programme as a Ponzi scheme and believed it could help many Nigerians. “When I heard about it, I was skeptical at first, but I decided to test the system by putting in N20,000 to see if I would get the money they claimed. “To my surprise, a month later, I got my N20,000 with my 30 per cent interest and an extra bonus. “I was amazed by the success so I put more money into the system and have benefitted from it. “This programme has helped many Nigerians deal with this recession so I don’t see the wrong in it.” Godwin Dickson, a mechanic said that the scheme had helped him with his finances, adding that it had assisted him immensely in paying his debts. “I don’t care what anyone has to say about MMM because as far as I am concerned, it has saved my life. “I have paid off my debts and I have been able to generate extra change to take care of my household. “I owed someone a large sum of money and someone introduced me to MMM and loaned me N500,000 to put into the scheme. “The money I got back was able to clear all my debts at once and I was able to finally breathe again. “I am aware of the risks of this programme, but it is also a lifesaver and I will advise more Nigerians to get involved at least for now that it seems safe,” he said. Joyce Okoh, an entrepreneur, said that she was certain the business would crash at a point, but she would take advantage of it while it lasts. “I know that this programme has failed before in some countries and I admit it is a sort of Ponzi scheme but why should I complain when I am benefitting from it? “MMM is bound to fail whether the government bans it or not, because the process is supported by new members funding the profits to be made by older members which will crash at some point. “However, I have made a large sum of money from this programme and I am willing to continue reaping the benefits it is offering for now. “I just have to ensure I don’t get greedy and invest my whole savings or sell my property like many people have done because when it crashes, people will become suicidal. “I think the key thing here is to know your limit and know when to bow out of the programme,” she said. Politics / Alleged Hate Speech: ICC Considering APC Petition Against Patience Jonathan by SundayOmeje(m): 3:54pm On Nov 20, 2016 |
The International Criminal Court, ICC, has confirmed that it received a petition against former First Lady, Patience Jonathan, over alleged hate speech. The All Progressives Congress, APC, had before the general elections in 2015, sent a petition against Jonathan to the ICC headquarters, accusing her of making inciting comments. ICC said though no investigation had been opened in Nigeria, it was considering the petition. The ICC said, “To clarify, no investigations have been opened in Nigeria yet. The office is very much committed to this file, which is still at a preliminary examination stage.“The purpose of the preliminary examination is to determine whether legal criteria for opening investigations are met in Nigeria”, the court told The Punch. Meanwhile, Niger Delta militants have vowed to resume attacks on more oil installations if the federal government does not stop its prosecution of Patience Jonathan and a former militant http://dailypost.ng/2016/11/20/alleged-hate-speech-icc-considering-apc-petition-patience-jonathan/ 1 Like

Politics / DSS Lies, Blackmail Will Not Lessen Their Crime Against Judiciary – Wike by SundayOmeje(m): 5:40pm On Oct 09, 2016 |
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has berated the Department of State Services (DSS ) for resorting to deliberate misinformation and concocted stories to justify their unconstitutional assault on the nation’s judiciary. The governor stressed that the DSS lacks the constitutional powers to be involved in the legal process to discipline a serving judicial official, pointing out that there is a legal process that must be followed. Addressing the people of Rivers State on Saturday night during a special dinner for the management and players of Rivers United at the Government House, Port Harcourt, Governor Wike said the weak blackmail of the DSS will not lessen the crime they have committed against the Nigerian State by assaulting the judiciary. He noted that nobody is deceived by the concocted figures being circulated by the DSS. He said: “Their blackmail stories will not move me. They will concoct all kinds of stories to justify this undemocratic illegality perpetrated against the judiciary. “It is really unfortunate that DSS would concoct a false defence that $2million USD , (that is N900million) was found in the house of the judge. It is unfortunate that the DSS is coming up with flimsy excuses. ” It will be recalled that the governor and the DSS Operatives had their encounter outside the gate of the residence. It is therefore ridiculous that the DSS remained outside to decare thar N900million was found in the residence. The governor noted that while he does not condone corruption , he will never support any process that is targeted at ruining the nation’s judiciary. He stated that the National Judicial Council has the responsibility to discipline erring and corrupt judges, after which indicted judicial officers are handed over to the relevant law enforcement agency for prosecution. The governor said that the Police, Army and other para- military agencies have their respective processes for the discipline of erring and corrupt officers. “In the police, erring and corrupt policemen are first given orderly room trial, sacked and then appropriately prosecuted. For Judicial Officers, the DSS has no role”, he said. Governor Wike added: “This impunity must stop.I am not in support of any judicial support being involved in corruption. What we are saying is that the right things must be done. We must not do things that will jeopardise our hard earned democracy. “If they had abducted the judge, they may go ahead to kill the judge and they will say that Rivers State is insecure.” The governor added that he resorted to offering the explanation because of the propensity of the DSS and other agencies to use newspapers and the media to manipulate information. He said: “The way things are going nobody should relax. Freedom comes with sacrifice. Independence comes with sacrifice. Liberty comes with sacrifice. He said: “We must resist this injustice. Nobody can intimidate Rivers people. If you use to do that, not now. I am informing you before you will read whatever lies they wiĺl circulate in newspapers.” The governor noted that contrary to false statement issued by the DSS he was with senior Rivers indigenes at the time of stopping the DSS unconstitutional act. He said: “I was there with our State and National Assembly members, Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Austin Opara , the PDP Chairman, Bro Felix Obuah and some caretaker chairmen. When they said I was with thugs I just laughed.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/10/dss-lies-blackmail-will-not-lessen-their-crime-against-judiciary-wike/ 6 Likes |

Politics / Wike Threatened, As He Resists Police, DSS Attempt To Abduct Judge by SundayOmeje(m): 7:07am On Oct 08, 2016 |
PORT HARCOURT : Governor Nyesom Wike in the early hours of (Saturday) today mobilised to stop alleged attempt by men of the Department of State Security, DSS and the Police to abduct a Judge at his number 35/84 B residence, Forces Avenue, Port Harcourt. The governor who fielded questions from newsmen in front of the Judge’s residence said he was manhandled by men of the DSS and the Police who came to whisk the judge away. “What has happened this night is unfortunate. Even in military government it has never happened like this , you listen to people. This is why we are here. I said not under my watch will I allow this type of activity take place. “The DSS, Police they cocked their guns and said they will shoot me. And I told them I have never heard this type of thing happen before. Again this is to show that more of this will come. Wondering why the security men will choose 1 am to storm the residence of the judge the governor said their action portend danger for the nation’s democracy. He said all he expected the security men to have done was to invite the judge, adding that if he had ignored the invitation then other legal steps should have been taken. Continuing, he said he did not bother to know the name of the judge but he only had to come out to stop the attempted abduction of the judge because as Chief Security of the state he would not allow such lawlessness take place in his state. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/10/breaking-news-wike-resists-police-as-dss-attempt-to-abduct-judge-manhandled/

Nairaland / General / 5 Major Causes Of Pot-belly And How To Reduce It by SundayOmeje(m): 6:22am On Oct 08, 2016 |
There are pills in the market today that claim to erase belly fat
effortlessly. However, changes in a person's lifestyle are a
more direct and more effective approach to eliminating the
problem.
Having a pot-belly has become very rampant among men in the
Nigerian society. Apart from affecting smart dressing in men, it
poses health hazards. Even the women folks strongly frown at
this odd development.
There are pills in the market today and numerous exercise
routines that claim to rid belly fat. However, changes in a
person’s lifestyle are a more direct and more effective approach
to eliminating the problem.
Excessive belly fat is said to increases the risk of diabetes,
heart disease, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and even
Alzheimer’s disease.
Here are 5 of the most common causes of belly fat:
1. Drinking Too Much Alcohol
“Beer belly” is the common term for excess fat that has
accumulated due to drinking a lot of alcohol on a regular basis.
Beer isn’t the only culprit, though. Contrary to the specific term,
drinking an excessive amount of any alcoholic beverage can
cause beer belly. (Except wine, according to research.) Alcohol
contains nothing but empty calories that are stored in the
stomach area.
2. Eating Too Many Bad Carbohydrates
There are good carbs and there are bad carbs. Eating unrefined
carbs like fruit, legumes, vegetables and whole grains is good
for you, and helps in weight control. Eating biscuits, cakes,
donuts, white bread and other refined carbs does the opposite.
Eat too many of these carbs and a person’s insulin level will
rise. Their metabolism will slow down, and the excess sugar the
body can’t use will be stored as belly fat.
3. Stress Overload
Too much stress has many negative impacts on the body.
Stress causes the body to switch into survival mode. One way
the body ensures its survival is by storing more fat so
starvation doesn’t occur if there’s no food eaten. Stress also
causes the body to produce excessive amounts of Cortisol. This
hormone moves stored fat to the abdomen area and creates
belly fat. According to a study by the Psychology Department at
Yale University, women (in particular) who had a higher amount
of belly fat were more negative, and lived with higher levels of
stress.
4. Genetics
This cause of belly fat may be the toughest one to hear,
because it entails not really being able to do all that much to
prevent it. Genetics play a role in deciding where the fat
distribution goes in your body, and it practically relates to two
different body types. Either you are apple- shaped or pear-
shaped. If you are pear-shaped, then the fat generally
accumulates in your lower areas like your fanny. If you are
apple-shaped, then your body has the tendency of storing fat
around your midsection, thus leading to belly fat.
5. Sedentary Lifestyle
A sedentary lifestyle is defined as one in which a person fails to
exercise regularly, or fails to get any exercise at all. The biggest
problem with a sedentary lifestyle is that it can increase your
chances of developing serious health conditions, which are all
somewhat preventable. If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, you are
raising your chances of dying younger, yet you can easily avoid
this by simply moving more and exercising regularly. It
commonly consists of the practice of sitting on the couch and
watching too much TV. Such a lifestyle is not limited just to TV
watching; it also involves reading too much or using the
computer too much. Basically, if you are not moving enough, it
is sedentary.
