Davash222:You're smart |
The Kwara State Government on Wednesday named the state university after the late strongman of Kwara politics, Olusola Saraki. The state governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, made the announcement in Ilorin at the inauguration of the Sola Saraki Educational Foundation. Mr. Ahmed, who declared that the Kwara State University, KWASU, would henceforth be called Sola Saraki University, explained that renaming the university was a better way of immortalising the late politician. According to the governor, the late Mr. Saraki was an “outstanding politician, mentor and philanthropist”. The governor said Mr. Saraki, who bore the title of Waziri of Ilorin, had immense love for education as evident in his contributions to the building of several primary and secondary schools across the state. While commending the initiator of the Sola Saraki foundation for complimenting government’s efforts in making education accessible to all, the governor called on individuals and corporate bodies to invest in education as a way of securing the future of the children. Mr. Ahmed donated N15 million for the takeoff of the foundation. Born on May 13, 1933 in Ilorin, Kwara State, the late Mr. Saraki was until his death regarded as the “strongman of Kwara politics”. He first ran in the 1964 parliamentary election for Ilorin as an independent candidate, but lost. After the election, he returned to medical practice in Lagos, only returning to party-politics in 1978/79. In 1977, Mr. Saraki was elected as a member of the Constituent Assembly that produced the 1979 constitution. In 1979 he was elected a Senator of the Second Republic, and became Senate Leader. In 1983 Mr. Saraki was re-elected into the Senate on the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) platform. Mr. Sakari died on Wednesday 14 November 2012 in Lagos at the age of 79 after a battle with cancer. He was laid to rest in Ilorin. His son, Bukola Saraki, is Nigeria’s senate president. source: www.premiumtimesng.comp/regional/north-central/231539-kwara-names-state-varsity-after-saraki.html

Dear University Community, I am writing on two matters, one good news and the other terrible news. The NUC has formally written the Kwara State University approving the University's full mode of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering (B. Eng.) degree program, and I must congratulate all our students and staff in Engineering, especially the department of aeronautical and astronautical engineering for their hard work and patience, that have led to this great success. By this news, KWASU has retained its record as the first-ever Nigerian University to institute a degree program in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering. Our dear students and staff can be proud of their University! We have formally submitted an invitation to NUC for accreditation as we are fully ready for the NUC accreditation. On the sad news was the recent death, on February 22, 2017, of a son of the HOD of the Department of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, Prof. S. Talabi. This is a very terrible story that has shaken the Department, the College and the entire campus, and we pray God Almighty to stand by Prof. Talabi, console him and strengthen him, and forgive the son and make him a child of Paradise. Please feel free all to sympathize with and console Prof. Talabi on this sorrow. It is from God that we all came and to Him we shall all return. Dear University Community, I must seize this opportunity to express my heart-felt gratitude to all from this great community who sent me congratulatory messages on being asked to give the 2017 Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL) lecture, jointly organized by NAL and the National Universities Commission, and which I delivered at the Idris AbdulKadir Hall, National Universities Commission (NUC), Abuja, on February 23, 2017. I thank everyone in KWASU that worked towards the success of the lecture. KWASU Chancellor, His Excellency, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari sent a representative to the lecture and so was the Governing Council of this University. The Kwara State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, KWASU Registrar and his family, Humanities, Management and Social Sciences Provost and Academic Coordinator, Dean, School of Post Graduate Studies, Director, Kwara State University Press and his staff, Protocol Officer Hakeem Alohunmata, VC's PA, AbdulKadir AbdulKareem of the Electrical Unit of the Works Department, KWASU Drivers Coordinator, UR Staff Alawo, and many more from KWASU, all attended. The overwhelming kind messages and solidarity that I continue to receive from you all too numerous to list here are indication of your generosity and love. Without question, the honor for this lecture belongs to our dear University and to all of you! I look forward to seeing you all on campus! Emir Muhammadu Sanusi of Kano has asked governors in the north to start converting mosques to primary schools, especially in the villages. Emir of Kano wants mosques converted to schools Premium Times reports that the topmost traditional ruler said this during the Kano Educational Week programme adding: “I was in Morocco sometimes ago and I asked to see their universities. They took me to mosques where I saw each serving as classrooms teaching Computer Science and other subjects." According to Emir Sanusi, the mosque is not originally meant for prayers alone, but also used for events like marriages, educational activities and leadership trainings. He argued that using the mosques for these other practices would help to save money and energy while adding that if this idea was adopted, funds allocated to building schools could be used for other things including training of teachers. In his remark, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano explained that the government had spent over N30 billion on salaries of teaching and non-teaching staff of schools in the 44 local councils of the state. He added that the state was hoping to produce over 25,000 qualified teachers in Kano through the new initiative by source: http://www.nigeriannewspapers.today/2017/02/07/just-in-emir-sanusi-tells-northern-governors-we-must-convert-mosques-to-schools/ cc seun, mynd44, lalasticlala
