Microsoft founder Bill Gates: Ctrl-Alt- Del could have been done with just ONE button BILL Gates has admitted that the Ctrl- Alt-Del function for Windows PCs was a mistake and that it could have been done with just a SINGLE button The Microsoft co-founder said the three button shortcut, designed originally to re- boot a computer, was an error that stuck throughout the years. Mr Gates, 57, said he had originally favoured the Ctrl-Alt-Esc combination but later preferred accessing the function at the press of just one button. The shortcut, used to log onto PCs and shut down programs, was invented by computer engineer David Bradley who worked on the original IBM PC. Speaking in an interview at Harvard University, Mr Gates said: "We could have had a single button but the guy who did the IBM keyboard design didn't want to give us our single button - it was a mistake." The Microsoft co-founder said he was in favour of a single button for the function [REUTERS] It was a mistake Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates Mr Bradley previously said during IBM's 20th anniversary that he may have invented the function but Mr Gates "made it famous". The engineer said he had devised the function because it was difficult to press those three keys together accidentally. Mr Gates added: "We did some very clever things- the IBM PC character set, usually you have 128 characters like the lower case and upper case but we took the upper ones and put like suit symbols in- we were able to experiment with a lot of stuff but more on the software side and not the hardware." As the Benue state university Makurdi ASUU chapter meets today over the order by the Benue state governor Mr Gabriel Suswam for them to return back to class or risk being sacked, one point should be made clear to the governor and his supporters that this is dictatorial approach that should be condemned by all. I am made to understand that the university will benefit 900 million naira from the 130 billion naira intervention fund by the federal government. And already the governor and his supporters are already claiming that it was their effort that this money will be granted to the university.I must make this point clear to everyone that, it was the bold action of the lecturers that the university is benefiting from the intervention fund from the federal government and not Suswam's individual effort. The money is not from the Benue state coffers so the governor should not use this as a cheap propaganda for achievement in his ineffective administration. The lecturers should not be intimidated by his utterances and should continue with the struggle. The struggle so far has produced 900 million naira and this will go a long way in lifting the school infrastructure for better learning environment. They should make their position clear to the governor today that we are not in a military administration but in a democratic dispensation. After all you all are intellectuals.I also know that those that got employed the wrong way may want to go the side of the governor but majority carries the vote.Benue state university Makurdi is part of ASUU and what the national body is fighting for is the fight for all. |
Benue State GOVERNOR orders the re- opening of BSU,Threatens To Sack Lecturers Benue State governor, Mr Gabriel Suswam, yesterday directed the management of the Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi to reopen the institution and announced the decisions of the state government to suspend payment of salaries to lecturers and sack lecturers that failed to comply. The BSU lecturers joined their counterparts across the country to observe the nationwide strike action declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) which commenced since July, 2013. They have refused to go back to work despite several pleas by the governor. However, Suswam said that members of the union in the BSU have deliberately refused to call off the strike even as the state government has made several appeals for the lecturers to consider the interest of the students. He directed the management of the university to reopen the institution with immediate effect or risk being sacked. Suswam made this declaration at Government House, Makurdi during an urgent meeting with the management of the university led by the vice chancellor, Prof. Charity Angya. The VC was represented by the deputy vice chancellor, administration, Prof Nicholas Ada. According to Suswam, “it is important that you as management come because you have refused to reopen the university. I am going to call the Governing Council and insist that they open the university but the first thing I am going to do is that you will not have your salaries paid beginning from this month and any staff who refuses to come back to work would have his or her appointment terminated and nobody is going to collect salary arrears. And so I needed you people to know before you hear it announced on the radio”. “I am also aware that there was a court case that was instituted against the university by the state government over strike and we are going to take that case up and make you face it because we have completely run out of patience and there is no basis while the children will continue to be on strike,” Suswam said |
