One Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP Popoola Kayode, leader of Taskforce team operating around Lekki Ajah area of Lagos State and his team members have been arrested for collecting N100,000 bribe.

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit (Taskforce), Head, Public Affairs Unit, Adebayo Taofiq said this in a statement on Sunday made available to newsmen in Lagos State.

Taofiq said that the bribe was paid by one Didi Ekanem, the owner of a Toyota Venza with registration number: APP 775 GJ who was caught driving against traffic (one-way) around Lekki Ajah Expressway.

According to him, the statement was necessitated in response to a story published on page 31 of the Sunday Punch Newspaper, dated Nov.22, 2020 with caption “Taskforce Commander Made Sexual Advances At Me – Didi Ekanem”.

“The leader of the team, Kayode is not the Commander of the Agency as quoted in the report which said that the money (N100,000) was collected via bank transfer to his (Kayode) account.

“After the transfer, the vehicle was then released to Ekanem,” Taofiq said.

He said that the Chairman of the Agency, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi upon investigation of the incident which happened on Wednesday, Nov.18 immediately arrested Kayode and his team members.

“They will be sent back to the Lagos State Police Command for further disciplinary actions,” the unit head said.

Taofiq said that Egbeyemi thereby warned motorists, particularly private car owners and motorcycle operators to desist from driving against traffic (one-way).

He said that anyone caught would be charged to the Lagos State Mobile Court for prosecution.

“Members of the public should stop inducing our officers with money and be reminded that both the giver and receiver are liable in Law.

“It is only Court that pronounces traffic fines and money that will be paid into government purse,” Taofiq quoted Egbeyemi as saying.

Taofiq, however, urged members of the public to always report any corrupt officer who engaged in shady deals thereby spoiling the image of the Agency for disciplinary actions.

#EndSARS: British MPs to deliberate on request for sanction against Nigeria Monday

The British Parliament will begin deliberations on Monday on a petition filed by some groups and individuals requesting sanctions against the Nigerian government and officials for alleged human rights violations during the #EndSARS protests.

Members of the British Parliament had last month decried the violence that trailed the shooting of the protesters by the military in the Lekki area of Lagos.

The MPs said in a report following the incident they will for the outcome of investigations by the Federal and state governments into reports of police brutality and extra-judicial killings in Nigeria before taking a position on the matter.

The said petition was signed by over 220,118 individuals in the United Kingdom, requesting the UK government to sanction Nigeria for alleged violations of human rights.

In a reply to the petition signed by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the Parliament said the UK government “is deeply concerned by violence during recent protests in Nigeria, which tragically claimed lives. Our thoughts are with the families of all those affected.”

The reply read: “Parliament will debate this petition on November 23, 2020. You will be able to watch online on the UK Parliament YouTube channel.

“On July 6, the British Government established the Global Human Rights sanctions regime by laying regulations in Parliament under the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2018.

“The Foreign Secretary set out in full, the scope of the UK’s new Global Human Rights sanctions regime. He announced the first tranche of designations, as well as the government’s approach to future designations.

“This sanctions regime will give the UK a powerful new tool to hold to account those involved in serious human rights violations or abuses. The sanctions regime is not intended to target individual countries.

“It will allow for sanctions to be imposed on individuals and entities involved in serious human rights violations or abuses around the world.

“We will continue to consider potential designations under the Global Human Rights sanctions regime. It is a longstanding practice not to speculate on future sanctions designations as to do so could reduce the impact of the designations. The UK government will keep all evidence and potential listings under close review.”

Dreaded Terror Sect, Boko haram has yet again attacked the Convoy of Borno State governor, Babagana Zulum, this time killing 7 soldiers and two civilian JTF officers on Saturday.

Zulum and his entourage were attacked along Gajiram to Monguno Road.The convoy was on its way to Baga in Kukawa Local Government Area as a security detail to Zulum, who is spending two days with other government officials in the town to distribute relief items to newly settled IDPs.

The governor had earlier flown into the town with a Helicopter.

“We were attacked by the gunmen who came with about six trucks and seven motorcycles. We engaged them but they have already destabilised.”

“We had no option than to abort the trip and returned back to Maiduguri with corpses of the deceased. About seven people died immediately but two of my colleagues (soldiers) died from gunshot injuries when we got back to Maiduguri,” a source revealed.

In all, nine security men were killed in the attack.

We have too many grads....but not enough jobs

A United States of America-based medical doctor aspiring to be governor of Anambra State next year, Dr Godwin Maduka, at the weekend, said that he plans to build 21 universities in the state if given the opportunity to serve.



Maduka, who is aspiring for the top job on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said that if elected governor, he was going to establish higher institutions of learning so that Ndi Anambra could have greater access to university education.



The governorship hopeful stated this in his Umuchukwu country home in Orumba South LGA during a programme he organized for the youths of the state.



“If given the opportunity, I will build one university each in all the 21 Local Government Areas of the state. Education is key all over the world. We shouldn’t have a few scattered universities here. It is not that hard to set it up.



“In other places of the earth, some towns have up to six universities. It should be as easy as ABC. We will start with only 21; one per local government.



Asked how was going to fund them if that were to be, he queried: “Do you ever know what comes to the governor’s house in terms of funding? Any frugal governor can take care of that. There are some things that we can let go.



“And there are some things that we can bring in. It is a matter of priorities. There should be a new negotiation about funding education. After all, that’s why I am here now.”
