Next year is an election year, with lots of implications for funds. Stay ahead of the curve. |
Strangely I am not a fan of FDI. Domestic investment should be the main driver of economic growth in any country. Unfortunately our lending environment is very turgid, and is not helped by high CBN lending rates. |
A month forward, and the naira on the anonymous market is now at 169 naira. careful observation seems to indicate that there is a strong push somewhere to further devalue the naira in the wake of a strengthening dollar. Many currencies have already taken this step. Nigeria is surrounded by french speaking countries, which use the CFA franc. this currency is tied to the euro which has been devalued in comparison to the dollar. What does this mean? If your business sees you dealing with clients in neighboring countries, a propped up naira will make your goods expensive for these clients |

Looking at some of the indices: Inflation has risen for over 4 months now, and coupled with the fact that we are about to enter a election year, I don't think it is subsiding any time soon. It might be better to move into more stable currencies. The US fed is likely to raise interest rates soon. This should make the dollar stable and a good option - at least in the short term. Also to note is that oil prices have been dropping. This can be linked to the increase in US shale oil production. US production capacity is only going to increase in the future. They have made significant investments in their efforts to reduce dependence on international oil. In summary what am I saying? Watch any investments in naira as the naira is likely to lose value In the short term, the dollar is likely to strengthen. |
