In a disturbing trend that has swept through certain social circles, some girls are resorting to a shocking method to achieve the coveted “perfect” body. Pregnancy, once a sacred journey toward motherhood, is being manipulated for vanity—used to gain weight in all the “right” places before being terminated after five months. This exposé by GODFREY GEORGE uncovers the chilling lengths to which some go for the sake of appearance, delving into the pressures of beauty, societal obsession with body image, and the haunting consequences of this dark, open secret Silence. Longer silence, followed by shock. Dr Sina Ajidahun, a physician, looked utterly thunderstruck. “You mean young ladies would get pregnant and abort the pregnancy just so they can put on weight? This is madness!” he blurted out in dismay. Promising our correspondent that he would conduct his own findings, Saturday PUNCH embarked on a deeper investigation to uncover the truth behind this shocking claim. After hours of scouring microblogging sites, X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok, several leads began to surface. These led our correspondent to a quiet town in Delta State, Ukwuani, where many respondents confirmed that the trend was indeed rampant. “This is no news at all. As far back as 2009, when I was in SS2, I heard of this method for gaining weight. We even had a clique in every class set, which would help you with all sorts of tricks on your weight gain journey,” shared a slightly slender woman who gave her name only as Ada. “Please, don’t capture me in your camera,” she begged, guiding our correspondent, who had traveled down to her hometown on this knowledge-seeking mission. “People know me here. If word gets out, I may be in trouble,” she added, nervously waving at an older woman frying garri nearby. The sun hung low in the hazy sky, casting a warm golden hue over the town’s sparse streets, each corner craving a touch of industrialisation. Before long, Ego, another local, led our correspondent to the home of a man named Chiedu, her cousin, who would help further this fact-finding mission. Without any prompting, Chiedu immediately began, “This news na old news now. Even boyfriends get their babes pregnant so that their breasts will develop, and then they’ll remove it (pregnancy). I’ll take you to a woman who will tell you everything.” After several minutes of waiting for transportation, Chiedu offered to drive our correspondent on a ‘ladies’ bike’ to the nearby settlement of Obiaruku, where they were to meet the woman he referred to as Iron Lady. “She’ll explain this thing to you well. She’s a retired nurse,” he added, as the bike sputtered along the dusty roads. When they arrived, Iron Lady looked frail, her skin pale. She sat as though she had used the last of her strength just to remain upright. “Our girls have been doing it. It is not new, but the truth is that many have gone down that path. I am a retired nurse from the Delta State Ministry of Health. I served here in Obiaruku for years before I was transferred. “I first heard of this around 2006 —that girls would intentionally get pregnant if they were ‘too slim,’ and when they noticed they had started adding weight, they would terminate the pregnancy. “Abortion comes with its own complications, but one of the ‘side effects’ of abortion is that it can sometimes cause women to gain weight. However, I must stress that this doesn’t work for everyone, and it’s mostly unsafe in Nigeria because, to some extent, it’s illegal,” she added, her voice trailing off. The sun had begun to set, and the crickets emerged, chirping the night’s song. Chiedu suggested we set out for another location, where Ego had mentioned a woman who lost her child to this dangerous practice was willing to speak. It was nearing 8pm, and the streets were growing emptier and quieter, except for a few children playing with fire and the faint sound of a church service echoing from afar. We soon arrived at the house, but the woman (whose name is withheld) seemed unaware of our visit. “She (Ego) told you people to come here and ask me questions about Prisca, who died over six years ago?” she asked in an Igbo dialect, which only Chiedu could understand. After much pleading, the woman, who said she was trying to move on, asked us to return the next day after she had spoken to her husband. Later, our correspondent learned from Ego that the woman was a single mother who had lost her husband years ago. It was clear that she didn’t want to revisit the tragedy of Prisca. Still, Ego explained that Prisca had gone through the weight-gain process, getting pregnant by a youth corper named Israel, who, according to Ego, had told Prisca she was too slim to be his girlfriend. “The boy confessed in front of the entire community back then. It’s common knowledge. I don’t know why Mama Prisca refused to talk. “Prisca was around 19 or 20 years old when it happened. She bled to death because the abortion was carried out by quacks,” Ego shared, her voice heavy with sorrow. A medical doctor practising in Asaba, who requested anonymity, confirmed that the practice was widespread in the area. “From Warri to Sapele, Benin to Port Harcourt, and other parts of the South-South zone where my job has taken me, we’ve heard such stories in whispers. We’ve treated several complications after multiple abortions. “There’s an obsession with the new body that these ladies achieve, so they’re willing to endure the painful process repeatedly to maintain it,” the internal medicine physician told Saturday PUNCH. “But it’s sheer foolishness because it doesn’t work for everyone—it’s like fetching water with a basket. I can’t even understand why women would subject themselves to such risks,” he added with a heavy sigh. At the lobby of the Port Harcourt International Airport, as our correspondent prepared to depart for Lagos, more leads emerged on X, where several medical professionals were willing to share with our reporter real-life accounts of women who lost their lives due to this risky weight-gain procedure. Scrolling through several posts as far back as 2019, Saturday PUNCH realised the rumours had lingered. It has been a quieter story, whispered in the private spaces shared between women—a story so unspoken, yet so widely known, it lingers in the shadows like a haunting melody. This is a story of bodies—of weight, of curves, of the delicate dance between vanity and vulnerability. In a world where a woman’s worth can often be measured by the contours of her silhouette, where every inch gained or lost is scrutinised like the strokes of an artist’s brush on canvas, some women find themselves on an unexpected, perilous journey. In a world where beauty is often a currency, the burden of being invisible weighs heavily on some women. And so, some turn to the unthinkable, the unspeakable—they turn to life itself. Pregnancy, that sacred act of creation, that miracle woven into the fabric of human existence, is now wielded with strange intent. She conceives, fully aware that the child will never be born. In this interview, Chief Munir Balogun, the father of popular afrobeat star, Ayo Balogun, aka Wizkid, tells AYOOLA OLASUPO the motivation for the family’s generosity, his counsel to his son when attacked by Davido’s fans, among others You are trending online for doling out cash to the people in your former community in Surulere, Lagos. Your son said you go there often to give money to people. Why do you do this? We lived in Somade many years back and we have our house now at Tafawa Balewa. I don’t go to Somade anymore. I only visit Small London in Surulere, and that is where my brother, who is the father of the Surulere Local Government chairman resides. I normally go there to see him and we sit down together and talk. I don’t go to Somade at all and it’s been many years since we left the place. But you still observe your prayers at Oluwaseyi Mosque which is in that neighbourhood even when you’re no longer there. Why do you do that? You know our house is in Tafawa Balewa and it is closer to that mosque. I’ve lived in that area before but I have left the place. My daughter is still there and everything is there. So why should I leave the area? I don’t give it to anybody and we don’t rent it out so that is why I’m constantly there and I also told you that my brother is in Small London. In a post on Twitter, Wizkid said your generosity is also a motivation for his giving back to the people of his childhood community. What can you say to that? That is the truth because one has to give back to his community. There is no need to force anybody before doing that. Children will always do whatever they see their fathers doing. Some people have more than enough money but to spend just a kobo for the people out of the money will be very difficult for them. That is not the case in our family and that is what I will tell you about that. We are ready to assist with whatever we have; we give it out. We are a kind of family that does not like when people are suffering, especially when someone says he or she has not eaten since morning. I don’t like hearing that because that alone always moves me a lot so I will have to give such a person some money at least to eat. That is our nature and that is why we always treat people well. Even when things were not as rosy as now, we were still doing the little we had then. So, that is the only thing I see there. I’m a Muslim and that is what my religion teaches us and one has to learn how to give out to people. Now that Wizkid is big and famous, do you still advise him on certain things? We talk very often. We talk regularly and he is not far from me at all. He is someone that is very close to his family and he doesn’t joke with his family at all. If I have anything to discuss, I call him and he does that too. In fact, he is not far from the family at all; he sees family as number one. Wizkid and Davido have always been having banter for some time now. What do you think about the entire situation? Yes, I’ve read it. I saw it on Facebook or Instagram and I read what everybody was saying. What is your view about the situation and have you advised Wizkid about it? I have done that and I told my son that he shouldn’t look or listen to whatever the boys who are supporters of Davido are saying. The supporters are only looking for what they will say to collect money and all of that. They are just looking for what they are going to eat and I told him not to pay much attention to them. I’ve told my son to take things easy with them and overlook whatever they say because I don’t blame them. You lost your wife recently. What do you miss about her? You know we were husband and wife and I do not have any other wife. When such a thing happens you should know what will be on the mind of the husband or wife as the case may be. What we know is that man proposes, but God disposes. We cannot blame God. How has the family been coping with the loss? We are coping with the situation and we just leave everything to God. The directive was contained in a circular referenced: PSM/DIR/CON/CWO/051/117 and dated September 11, 2024. According to the circular signed by the Director of Payment Services Management Department of the bank, Mr. Oladimeji Taiwo, the CBN took the decision to make PoS transactions more transparent and flexible in the operations and ensure that they play according to the rules. The directive required all PTSPs to submit monthly returns to the CBN, detailing the number of merchants and agents they manage, along with the PTSA services used to route the corresponding transactions. In addition, each PTSA is required to submit monthly returns to the CBN, detailing all transactions processed through their platforms, with the two submission to be made not later than seven days after the end of each month. The apex bank warned that non-compliance would attract sanctions against any player that breaches the directives. The circular reads in full: “In order to achieve the objective of tracking electronic transactions in Nigeria, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in August 2011, granted a Payment Terminal Service Aggregator (PTSA) licence to Nigeria Interbank Settlement System PIc (NIBSS), As part of efforts to mitigate the concerns regarding channeling all Point of Sale (PoS) transactions through a single aggregator, the CBN on April 19, 2024, granted a second PTSA licence to Unified Payment Services Limited (UPSL. “In furtherance of the above, the CBN hereby directs as follows: “Acquirers are henceforth required to route all transactions from Pos terminals at merchant and agent locations, Whether on physical or electronic Pos terminals, through any CBN-licensed Payment Terminal Service Aggregator (PTSA) “PTSAs are required to Lend Pos transactions to only Processors certified by the relevant Payment Scheme, nominated by the Acquirer and licensed by CBN. “All licensed Processors must be integrated with both PTSAs, thereby allowing Acquirers the flexibility to choose which Processors) and PTSA to utilize. “All Payment Terminal Service Providers (PTSPs) must ensure that their PoS devices and applications are configured to route transactions through any PTSA, as directed by the Acquirer. “AIl PTSPs shall submit monthly returns to the CBN, detailing the number of merchants and agents they manage, along with the PTSA services used to route the corresponding transactions “Each PTSA is required to submit monthly returns to the CBN, detailing all transactions processed through their platforms. “The returns mentioned in items (5) and (6) above are expected to be submitted to the Director, Payments System Management Department, not later than seven (7) days after the end of each month. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued an alert to Nigerians regarding the activities of a faith-based organization, Christ Mercy Land Deliverance Ministries, led by Prophet Jeremiah Fufeyin. The agency claims the ministry is using its (NAFDAC) name to mislead and deceive the public. In a statement released on Sunday, NAFDAC’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasised that none of the products being advertised and sold by the organization are registered with the agency. It said, “NAFDAC wishes to alert the public on the activities of a faith-based organization – Christ Mercy Land Delivery Ministries – that uses NAFDAC name to deceive the unsuspecting public. “Recently, NAFDAC has been inundated with petitions from concerned citizens about Senior Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin of Christ Mercy Land Delivery Ministries, Km 5 Effurun, Sapele Road, Delta State, on a Miracle Water and Miracle Soap being advertised with healing and miracle claims and sold to unsuspecting members of the public by the Spiritual Ministry. The Minister showcased the use of Miracle Water and Miracle Soap on social media to heal barrenness. He claimed that the women would carry twins if they used the soap. He openly told his congregation that the Soap is NAFDAC registered. Thus, the public began to visit the office to confirm the claims. “The petitioners also submitted the following products from the Spiritual Ministry to NAFDAC to verify the bogus claims. The products are Miracle & Healing Water, River Jordan Water, the Miracle Water from The Pool of Bethsaida, A New Beginning Mount Camel Miracle Water, Water of Life, Miracle Water from The Pool of Bethsaida (1L), A New Beginning Pool of Bethsaida Water, and Father Smelled Perfume.” The agency stated that upon receipt of the petitions, it contacted the Delta State Coordinator, through the Director Post Marketing Surveillance of the agency, to ascertain the existence or records of any transaction with the Christ Mercy Land Deliverance Ministries and the products in Delta State Office. “The Coordinator was also directed to visit the Ministry to establish the veracity of the claims in the petitions and take necessary regulatory action on the production facility in the Ministry where the Miracle water and other products are produced. The State Coordinator covertly bought the Miracle Water (25cl) for 3000 naira from the Ministries and took the pictures. “On Wednesday, August 14th 2024, the State Coordinator Delta State visited the Mercy Land Ministry and met the Head of Service – Mr. Ogunleye Fufeyin and the Chief Security Officer. The officials denied producing Miracle and Healing Water or Soap even with the evidence of the receipt of purchase. He claimed that only the Logo and address on the label were theirs but not the product. The HOS added that they only have a pool of Bethsaida water, which is spiritual and artificial. The HOS requested time to meet with other staff and returned. He returned after 30 minutes and refused to cooperate, asking them to see the CSO. “On August 27th 2024, a team of Investigation and Enforcement NAFDAC and Federal Task Force on Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods visited the Ministry to commence investigation on the place of purchase or the manufacturing site for possible sample collection, for laboratory analysis, but the officials did not cooperate with the team. Letters of invitation were issued to the officials to report on August 28th, but it was not honoured. The company instead submitted a Legal document at NAFDAC Headquarters Abuja on August 28th, 2024 and asked to come back on September 3rd, 2024, to organise their document before coming. The Agency then gave the Prophet till the 29th to report to the investigation and Enforcement NAFDAC Office Asaba for further necessary investigation. “Investigation and Enforcement Asaba waited for the Christ Mercy Land Delivery Ministries officials based on their earlier request to report for commencement of the investigation, but they still refused to show up. On September 3rd, 2024, they forwarded some documents instead of asking for more time to report,” it explained. It added that in a document made available to the NAFDAC Office on the evening of September 3rd, the faith organisation claimed to have entered into a production contract agreement with Globod Table Water Km 4, DSC Expressway, Otokutu, Delta State, without the knowledge of NAFDAC State Office in Delta State. The agency stated that the act is illegal according to the extant rules and regulations on commercial production. “In continuation of our investigation, NAFDAC Investigation and Enforcement has sealed the Globod Table Water factory to aid and abet the production, sale, and advertisement of unregistered and unwholesome Miracle Water under the pretext of Fake NAFDAC Registration Number. “At this point, it is very clear that Christ Mercy Land Delivery Ministries, KM 5, is not ready to present itself for investigation of production and advertisement of suspected falsified, unwholesome, and unregistered miracle products. “NAFDAC wishes to inform the public that none of these products being advertised and sold are registered with NAFDAC. The public is also being advised to stop patronizing any of these Miracle products. NAFDAC is scientific organization that is guided by verifiable scientific facts before registering any product. “In the meantime, we will continue with our investigation into the activities of this faith organization with regard to products within our mandates that have been reported to be manufactured and sold by them. I want to use this opportunity to warn faith organizations against illegal production of regulated products without requisite regulatory requirements,” it added. Adeyeye, however, assured Nigerians of the agency’s resolve to continue safeguarding their health Read more https://supers.ng/nafdac-pastor-jeremiahs-miracle-water-soap-under-investigation/

Religion has long played a crucial role in shaping human societies(cities), providing both unity and division throughout history. The following ten cities have witnessed epic religious events and continue to serve as pilgrimage sites for millions. 1. Mecca, Saudi Arabia Mecca, the holiest city in Islam, attracts millions of Muslims each year for the Hajj pilgrimage, one of the Five Pillars of Islam. This journey is obligatory for every capable Muslim at least once in their lifetime. Non-Muslims, however, are not permitted to enter Mecca. The city’s history dates back to a pre-Islamic legend involving Adam and Eve. More accurately, around 2000 BC, Abraham and his son Ishmael built the Kaaba, Islam’s most sacred site. In 570 AD, the Prophet Muhammad was born here, and later in 630 AD, he declared the city a center for Muslim pilgrimage. 2. Lhasa, Tibet Lhasa, meaning “place of the gods,” was the home of the Dalai Lamas from the 1600s until 1959. Although Tibetans are now a minority, the city remains a hub for Tibetan Buddhism. Notable sites include Jokhang Temple and the Potala Palace, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Many pilgrims come to Lhasa to follow one of the three pathways that lead around Jokhang Temple, seeking spiritual merit. 3. Bethlehem, West Bank Bethlehem is revered as the birthplace of Jesus, making it a major pilgrimage destination for Christians, especially during Christmas and Easter. It is also historically significant as the birthplace of David, the King of Israel. Despite the city’s tumultuous past, including numerous invasions and occupations, it remains a focal point of Christian pilgrimage. The Church of the Nativity, one of the world’s oldest churches, is believed to mark the location of Christ’s birth. 4. Varanasi, India One of India’s most sacred cities, Varanasi holds religious importance for Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains. Legend states that the city was founded by Lord Shiva, while historical records suggest it emerged 3,000 years ago as a center for textiles. Many Hindus come to Varanasi to bathe in the Ganges River, which is believed to cleanse sins. The city is also notable as the place where Buddha delivered his first sermon. 5. Vatican City Situated in Rome, Vatican City is the epicenter of the Roman Catholic Church. The world’s smallest independent state, it holds some of the most significant religious and cultural sites, including St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the Vatican Museums. Once part of the Papal States, it became independent in the 20th century after a treaty signed by Mussolini. 6. Haifa, Israel Haifa, a city on Mount Carmel overlooking the Mediterranean, is a center for the Bahá’í faith. The Bahá’í World Center, with its golden-domed shrine, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bahá’í, a religion founded in 19th-century Iran, emphasizes unity among all religions and the oneness of humanity. 7. Salt Lake City, Utah Salt Lake City was founded in 1847 by Mormon pioneers escaping persecution. Today, it serves as the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). The city’s religious landmarks include the iconic Salt Lake Temple, which took 40 years to complete, and the Family History Library, the largest genealogical library in the world. 8. Jerusalem, Israel Jerusalem is a spiritual hub for Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. It has been a focal point of religious significance for millennia and has faced destruction and invasion multiple times. Sites like the Temple Mount, Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the Western Wall draw millions of pilgrims annually. The Minister of State Petroleum, Heineken Lokpobiri, has assured Nigerians that petrol, otherwise known as fuel will be available by weekend. Lokpobiri stated this on Thursday, moments after he met with the vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima. Speaking to State House correspondents after the meeting with the Vice President, Lokpobiri said “We were summoned by the Vice President who was directed by Mr. President to summon this meeting and we have been with him to brief him about what is going on across the country. “The Vice President summoned us and we’ve been with him to brief him about what is going on across the country. And what is important is for us to convey to Nigerians that the President is empathetic about what is going on in the country. He is concerned about the hardship of Nigerians, and that was why he directed the Vice President to call this meeting, for us to reflect on what is going on in the country. “What is important is that products are available in the country, and we believe that between now and the weekend, there will be availability of products across the length and breadth of the country. “The price could be high in some other areas, much higher in some other locations, and in some locations, much more than you know other areas. “But we believe that by the time there is availability of products across the country, the price itself will stabilized. “But what is important is that government is not fixing prices. This sector is deregulated. And we believe that with the availability of products, the price will find its level. And this is important for Nigeria to know. Amid the controversy surrounding the death of Nigerian singer, Mohbad, social media commentator, Verydarkman reveals evidence allegedly implicating the Nollywood actress, Iyabo Ojo. Recall that Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, and despite police investigations, an autopsy and a series of court sessions, the cause of his death remains unknown. In a recent Instagram post, Verydarkman made claims regarding Iyabo Ojo’s involvement with Mohbad’s wife’s Instagram account. The critic provided proof to support his assertions that placed the actress in an alleged implicating position on Mohbad’s death. According to Verydarkman’s findings, Iyabo had the same I.P. [short for Internet Protocol] as Wunmi; suggesting that the singer’s widow’s Instagram account was logged in on the same phone as the actress. He deduced that Iyabo Ojo was behind the Instagram posts supposedly made by Wunmi since the death of her husband. husband. Evidence released by Verydarkman suggesting that Iyabo Ojo and Wunmi are both signed in on the same smartphone as revealed by their IPs. Additionally, Verydarkman insisted that Wunmi remains a prime suspect in Mohbad’s death while recalling how Iyabo once again implicated herself in an old video; stating that the singer ‘died inside and not outside the house.’ VDM concluded by challenging the actress who recently had an engagement for her daughter to sue him for defamation if she believes his claims were false. Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara, is dead. Ayilara, it was gathered, died in the early hours of Thursday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, The Nation reported. Sources close to the family told The Nation he underwent prostate cancer surgery on Wednesday before he died hours later. “We are very sad to inform you that our friend, brother, and family, the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, Waheed Ayilara, is dead,” the family was quoted as saying. A top police officer in Akwa Ibom State, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, also confirmed the CP’s death. Efforts made by PUNCH Online to independently verify this from the Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, were futile Thursday morning as calls to his line rang out. In November 2023, as a DCP, Ayilara was unveiled as the acting Commissioner of Police in Lagos. Ayilara, a former Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, took over from AIG Idowu Owohunwa. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says it has directed all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to complete the mandatory verification and linkage of SIMs to NINs by Sept. 14, 2024. This was disclosed in a statement signed by Mr Reuben Muoka, Director, Public Affairs at NCC, on Wednesday. The statement said that the directive aimed at ensuring full compliance with the NIN-SIM linkage policy. It said that the NCC was pleased to announce significant progress in the Federal Government’s 2020 policy to link all Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) to National Identity Numbers (NINs). According to the statement, to date, over 153 million SIMs have been successfully linked to their NINs, reflecting an impressive compliance rate of 96 per cent, a substantial increase from 69.7 per cent in January 2024. “As we approach the final phase of this critical process, the NCC seeks the continued cooperation of all Nigerians to achieve 100 per cent compliance. “The complete linkage of all SIM cards to NINs is essential for enhancing the trust and security of our digital economy. “By verifying all mobile users, this policy strengthens confidence in digital transactions, reduces the risk of fraud and cybercrime, and supports greater participation in e-commerce, digital banking, and mobile money services. “This, in turn, promotes financial inclusion and drives economic growth,” it said. According to the commission, through collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the NCC has uncovered alarming cases. It said there were cases, where individuals possessed an unusually high number of SIM cards, some exceeding 100,000. The NCC said that it also remained committed to working with security agencies and other stakeholders to crack down on the sale of pre-registered SIMs. It stressed that this was to safeguard national security and ensure the integrity of mobile numbers in Nigeria. The commission said that, effective from Sept. 15, 2024, it expected that no SIM operating in Nigeria would be without a valid NIN. “We urge all members of the public who have not yet completed their NIN-SIM linkage, or who have faced issues due to verification mismatches, to visit their service providers promptly to update their details before the deadline. “Alternatively, the approved self-service portals are available for this purpose. “The NCC also reminds the public that the sale and purchase of pre-registered SIMs are criminal offences punishable by imprisonment and fines. “We encourage citizens to report any such activities to the Commission via our toll-free line (622) or through our social media platforms,” it said. At least 60 people have died after a dam burst in war-torn Sudan due to heavy rainfall, adding to the growing humanitarian crisis in the region. The Arbat Dam, located in Red Sea State, collapsed under the pressure of torrential rains, leading to catastrophic flooding that swept away farms, villages, and vehicles downstream. The dam, which has a capacity of 25 million cubic meters, was a crucial source of drinking water for Port Sudan, where the military government is headquartered. The collapse has left the city and surrounding areas without a stable water supply, further complicating the lives of residents already battered by 16 months of civil war. Search and rescue operations are currently underway, but authorities fear the death toll may rise as efforts continue to locate missing persons. Local residents have reported harrowing scenes, with people trapped in vehicles and homes being washed away by the floodwaters. Ali Issa, a local resident, described the desperate situation: “People were stuck in seven cars—they tried to get them out but couldn’t.” Another resident, Moussa Mohamad Moussa, reported that entire communities had been wiped out: “All the houses and everything was swept away.” Read more https://supers.ng/60-people-feared-dead-as-dam-bursts/ |
A driver, Afeez Adedigba, who went viral wearing his wife’s dress while driving a popular micra taxi in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, has explained the reasons behind his action. Adedigba, who was seen in a viral clip wearing his spouse’s dress, said it was mainly because the rain drenched his clothes, and the only quick fix available to him was the cloth. In an interview with a media personality, Ayo Adams, on Monday, the driver said that when he took the cloth, he explained to his wife that he wanted to use it in his car, and she consented. “This is not the only cloth of my wife that I have. They are about two. The first time I took the dress, it was raining heavily, and all my clothes were drenched. I had no choice but to take hers since I was still interested in working that day. “So now, I wear the dress when it rains and put on mine when it stops. Many filling stations operated by independent oil marketers have now fixed the pump prices of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, at between N900 and N1,000/litre. Owners of these stations seem not to care about the cost of the product at retail outlets operated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company. Petrol prices at NNPC stations range from N568 to N617/litre. This often leads to queues at the stations. As Nigerians raise concerns about the high cost of the commodity by independent petrol dealers, the Federal Government has also vowed to shut down filling stations that will be caught dispensing PMS at exorbitant rates. It declared this through the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, stressing that it was not in the interest of Nigerians for marketers to profiteer in the sales of PMS. Independent oil marketers claimed that they’ve been buying petrol from private depot owners for as high as N850/litre since last week and that this was why the pump prices were high. However, the spokesperson of the NMDPRA, George Ene-Ita, argued that the petrol price reports that the regulator gets from its officials at the depots were different. “Our depot people see a different price because we ask them to publish the prices at the depots every day and it is not N850/litre. Our field agents at the depots give us a different figure,” he said. When told that some filling stations operated by independent marketers in Lagos and many other states dispense their products for as high as N900 and N1,000/litre, the NMDPRA official said such outlets would be brought to book if apprehended. “If we get these outlets, all we do is to try and shut them down, because NNPC is the company that brings in the product and they tell us how much they sell as their ex-depot prices to off-takers. And we sit down together and work out the margins and there is no way it should be that high,” Ene-Ita declared. The NMDPRA official further noted that there was no way the agency could reconcile the high cost of petrol sold by independent marketers. “Do you have these stations displaying the high prices on their pumps?” Ene-Ita asked. Our correspondent responded in the affirmative, and the regulatory agency’s official declared again, “Once we get these outlets, we are going to shut them down. NNPC tells us how much they sell and there is no way the pump prices should be that high. We don’t expect it to be higher than N650/litre.” The NMDPRA spokesperson warned marketers involved in profiteering to desist from the act, stressing that the agency would not fold its hands and allow operators to cheat Nigerians. Findings by our correspondents show that marketers are making more profit as the fuel crisis rocking the country has refused to end. The PUNCH reliably gathered that owners of filling stations have seized the opportunity to add to their margins as regulators could not enforce any particular price. Due to the low supply from NNPC, private depot owners were said to have hiked the price of petrol as high as N850/litre The depots sell to independent marketers, who could not get the product directly from the NNPC at about N570/litre like the major marketers. In return, the independent marketers sell a litre of petrol to motorists and other Nigerians at prices ranging from N850 to N900 or even N1,000 in some remote areas. “That is why no marketer is complaining of low margins again. This is the time for them to make money. The only issue is that getting the product is not that easy,” a source told The PUNCH. “The price is high because the supply is low. It is a matter of demand and supply. The price will continue to be up, at least for now. It Is an opportunity for the filling stations to add to their margins. This is an abnormal situation. Normalcy is restored, and the regulatory authority can monitor. Can the regulator monitor anybody now? “Imagine when you pay about N30m to NNPC to order petrol and it takes about one month to get the product. Assuming you take N30m from a bank with this interest rate, is that not a problem?’ a marketer stated. Sources at the Lagos depot informed our correspondent anonymously that the NNPC is still rationing the product despite assurances that normalcy would be restored last Wednesday. It was gathered on Monday that marketers could only get half of whatever metric tonnes they bid for. A depot operator said though the situation had improved a bit, the supply is still far below what is required to ease off the queues and make the product available for all Nigerians. Another source hinted that the Federal Government is now prioritising the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja to reduce the long queues in filling stations. “The queue is easing a little bit in Abuja. Almost 70 per cent of the trucks are going to Abuja. The directive is that they should go to Abuja,” the depot operator confided in The PUNCH. Contrary to claims that the marketers might be hoarding fuel, the manager of a filling station in Ogun State, who identified himself simply as Adeyanju, said no one hoards fuel because it will continue to dry up. “The way PMS is, if you put 33,000 litres in a tank, if you hoard it for too long, by the time you want to haulage it, it may not be more than 31,000 or 32,000 litres. It will be evaporating. No tank operator will ever hoard fuel, not even at this time when people are making money,” the manager disclosed. He added that no miracle could clear off the queues in this new week, asking the NNPC to ramp up supply. On Monday in Osogbo, Osun State, petrol was sold by filling stations owned by independent marketers at prices ranging from N900 to N1000 per litre. However, the few major marketers that dispensed petrol, sold the product for N700 per litre. Many filling stations within the metropolis did not open to customers, as commercial intra-city bus operators increased their charges by 50 per cent due to the high cost of fuel. Petrol was priced between N980 and N1000 at stations owned by independent dealers in Damaturu and its surrounding areas. The same scenario played out in parts of Lagos and Ogun states, where petrol went for as high as N950 and N1,000/litre at independent marketers’ stations. Following the reluctance of many marketers in Kano State to open their filling stations despite having the commodity in stock, black markets continued to thrive. A litre of PMS at filling stations owned by independent marketers still sold for N980 and N1000/litre in Kano. Following this negative development, black marketers have fully returned to the business and are having a field day. PMS at the black market sells for N1200 and N1300. As Nigeria grapples with soaring inflation and economic instability, (Hardship) staples like beef, tomatoes, and bread, once commonplace, have become highly priced luxury items. GODFREY GEORGE writes that families are now making profound adjustments to their eating habits and lifestyles by reverting to traditional, cheaper alternatives For Comfort Soberekon, a 47-year-old mother of six residing in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, chicken and beef have transformed from staples to luxury items, a stark reminder of the growing economic strain on many Nigerian families. As a petty trader trying to navigate the pressures exerted on her by inflation and managing the household with limited resources, Comfort has had to make significant changes to how she provides for her family. In a conversation with our correspondent on Tuesday, Comfort’s words were a blend of resignation and humour. “Ponmo is the way o,” she said with a lighthearted chuckle, referring to cow skin, which has become her family’s primary source of protein, substituting beef and chicken. This just masks a deeper truth—the escalating costs of traditional protein options have forced her to adjust her food budget in ways she never anticipated. Comfort’s family dynamic has shifted dramatically. With her eldest son, a budding fashion designer, recently moving out to pursue his career, and her eldest daughter settling into a job she secured with a hospitality outfit in Delta State, the burden of caring for the remaining four children, without a husband to share financial responsibilities, weighs heavily on her lean income. Tomato stew, once a staple in her Sunday morning meals, has vanished from the menu. The soaring prices of tomatoes have rendered this once-cherished dish nearly out of reach. Previously, she could purchase nearly 10 tomatoes for N500. Now, however, the price has skyrocketed to N1000 for just four tomatoes. “My regular customer even tries to set aside the slightly broken ones for me, but it’s still not the same. I often end up discarding them because some might be so bad that they could potentially be harmful, no matter how much we cook them,” Comfort explained with a note of frustration. With the high cost of tomatoes, Comfort has become inventive in her kitchen. Her new cuisine is what she refers to as a ‘special palm oil sauce’—a hearty blend of fresh peppers, onions, and garden eggs. “If I’m feeling a bit generous, I’ll add crayfish and some seasoning cubes, and it turns out really nice,” she said. This adaptation, though born out of necessity, has become a testament to her resourcefulness and resilience. Comfort’s story is not just about adjusting to higher food prices; it is about the broader struggle faced by many Nigerian families as they grapple with economic hardship. In the face of such adversity, Comfort remains hopeful and determined. Her ability to adapt and find joy in new culinary creations speaks to the strength and ingenuity that many Nigerians now exhibit in their daily lives. Despite the hardships, she continues to find ways to nourish and resourcefully manage her household. “My son normally sends me N15,000 monthly. My daughter only supports with N5,000 here and N2,000 there. It is not really regular. Before now, there was a way I could manage the money. Not anymore. Now, I can’t even manage anything. It is out of my hands. It can be frustrating sometimes,” she shrugged, sighing. In the Agbara area of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, Ogun State, Mama Amala, a well-known food seller, had to rethink her business strategies as rising costs kept reshaping her customers’ preferences. Known for her savoury dishes, the woman now finds herself adjusting her menu to reflect the prevailing economic realities. With the skyrocketing prices of beef and goat meat, Mama Amala has shifted her focus to more affordable ingredients. “Ponmo is what many people can afford now because it’s relatively cheap. Beef has become too costly for most of my customers, so using it in large quantities would mean that my family might end up eating it instead of my customers,” she explained. Her pragmatic shift highlights a broader trend among food vendors grappling with the impact of inflation on their businesses. This adjustment is not unique to Mama Amala. Across Ogun State, food sellers are also making significant changes in response to soaring prices. Suleiman Ibrahim, a vendor at Magboro Market, has seen a dramatic shift in the demand for his goods. Of late, tomatoes have become a rare sight in his stall. “I’ve had to cut back on buying tomatoes in bulk because the prices have become too expensive,” Ibrahim quipped. Instead, he has turned to selling cucumbers and garden eggs, which have gained popularity as substitutes for the increasingly expensive tomatoes. Similarly, Musa Yusuf, another vendor, has found his tomato business struggling. “Sometimes, I sell my tomatoes below cost price just to prevent them from spoiling,” he lamented. “It’s a tough situation.” The impact of these rising costs is evident in the changing landscape of local markets, where traditional staples are being replaced by more affordable alternatives. Return to charcoal Amidst these shifts, a different trend emerges—charcoal use. The increasing cost of gas and electricity has led many Nigerians to revert to using charcoal stoves. Charcoal, while less convenient and more labour-intensive to use, offers a more affordable cooking method and is widely available in both rural and urban areas. Charcoal sellers, like the ones operating under the Arepo bridge in Ogun State, are experiencing a surge in demand. “The way people are buying charcoal these days, you’d think there’s something unusual going on,” one of them remarked when approached by our correspondent. “Previously, my customers were mainly those involved in roasting and grilling, but now, households are buying from me.” The increase in charcoal sales underscores a broader shift in how people are adapting to the rising cost of cooking gas. Our correspondent gathered that charcoal is packaged and sold for N500, N300, and even N200, depending on the quantity and needs of the buyers. Mrs Victoria Segun, a mother of one, has embraced this change. “When the price of cooking gas jumped from N700 per kilogram to N1200—and some places were selling for N1500—I decided to switch to a charcoal stove,” she revealed. “I got one from my elder sister, and I now use it for most of my cooking. It’s easier and more economical. I only use gas for quick breakfasts like eggs.” Another woman, who preferred to remain anonymous, shared her family’s decision to switch back to charcoal as well. “We saw how things were going and decided to return to using charcoal,” she said with a soft chuckle. “It’s cheaper, and meals cooked with it taste even better.” Her experience and that of Victoria, also revealed how people have found charcoal to be a cost-effective alternative to gas and also appreciate the culinary benefits of traditional cooking methods. These adjustments—ranging from changes in food staples to shifts in cooking methods—indicate the resilience and adaptability of individuals and businesses in the face of economic challenges. As prices continue to rise and inflation exerts its toll, the ability to find new solutions becomes crucial, especially for consumers. Environmental concerns Charcoal stoves present a practical solution for households struggling with high energy costs. They provide a reliable cooking method, especially in areas with frequent power outages or unreliable electricity supply. However, the use of charcoal also comes with its own set of challenges, including environmental and health concerns. Charcoal stoves are associated with indoor air pollution and environmental degradation. An environmentalist and energy expert, Dr Ahmed Suleiman, warns that the use of charcoal contributes to indoor air pollution and deforestation. “While it’s a temporary fix, it’s essential to consider the long-term health and environmental impacts,” he added. Food inflation Nigeria’s headline inflation rate eased to 33.4 per cent in July 2024, slowing for the first time in almost two years, down from a 28-year high of 34.19 per cent in the previous month, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. This, according to experts, is due to the removal of the fuel subsidy and a weakening local currency. In recent years, food prices have risen across Nigeria, with the situation worsening due to government policies—the removal of fuel subsidies, among other factors. The upward trend in the prices of these staples and other products has weakened the purchasing power of many citizens, making it difficult for several households in the country to afford daily meals. At the March Monetary Policy Committee meeting, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, stated that the substantial purchase of foodstuffs by the government as palliatives is contributing to the soaring food inflation in the country. The CBN governor noted that inflationary pressure had not abated despite the interest rate hike in February. He said, “Staff reports show that the principal drivers of inflation acceleration are hikes in food and energy prices, which are associated with structural factors. “Further, new dimensions of inflationary pressure are emerging. First, ‘seller inflation’ arising from the oligopolistic structure of commodity markets, as seen in the prices of local commodities, is gaining significance. In addition, substantial purchases by the government for distribution as palliatives to vulnerable citizens are adding another dimension to food price inflation, with seasonal factors during religious fasting and festive periods contributing to price cyclicality.” When cucumber replaces tomato Due to unmitigated inflation, tomatoes, integral to many Nigerian dishes, have become prohibitively expensive. Households known to relish tomato stew are turning to cucumber and garden egg (aubergine) as viable substitutes. Cucumber, typically used in salads, has found a new role in Nigerian kitchens and is used in stews and soups, providing a refreshing twist to traditional dishes. Garden egg, a long-standing component of Nigerian cuisine, is increasingly being used as a substitute for tomatoes. This ingredient, often found in dishes like “egusi” soup, offers a similar texture and flavour profile. It was learnt that the versatility of garden egg allows it to absorb spices and seasonings effectively, making it a valuable addition to many recipes. When ponmo unseats beef The skyrocketing cost of meat has led many Nigerians to embrace ponmo (cow skin) as a more affordable alternative. Ponmo, though less nutritionally dense than traditional meat, provides economic relief while maintaining some traditional culinary elements. Ponmo’s affordability makes it an attractive option for families facing financial strain. In addition to its lower cost, it offers a different texture and flavour, which can enhance the diversity of food. Dishes like “pepper soup” and “stew” now commonly feature ponmo, reflecting its growing acceptance. Despite its economic benefits, ponmo lacks the protein and nutrient density of meat. Dr Ifeoma Nwosu, a nutritionist in Enugu State, noted that while ponmo is rich in collagen, which can be beneficial for joint health, it does not offer the same range of nutrients as meat. “It’s important for families to ensure they’re getting a balanced diet despite these substitutions,” she advised. Preference for eggs over chicken Despite a crate of eggs now going for as much as N5,000, many people still choose it over chicken, which costs the same rate per kilogramme. Eggs provide essential proteins and vitamins, making them a practical choice for many households. However, eggs are now being used in various traditional dishes previously made with chicken. From breakfast omelettes to “egg sauce” and “stew,” eggs offer a versatile and cost-effective alternative. Their lower price compared to chicken allows families to manage their food budgets more effectively. Balanced diet essential – Nutritionist Nwosu, the nutritionist, emphasised the need for balanced nutrition despite economic constraints. She said, “Substituting tomatoes with cucumber and garden egg can help manage food costs, but it’s crucial to ensure that these changes don’t compromise nutritional quality. Ponmo is a more affordable protein source but lacks some of the nutrients found in meat. Eggs are a good substitute for chicken but should be part of a varied diet to prevent deficiencies.” NSN president speaks Professor Wasiu Afolabi, the President of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, emphasised that despite economic hardships, individuals need to consume a diverse range of foods to meet their nutritional needs. He stated, “Regardless of economic conditions, individuals require a certain level of nutrients from their food. To achieve this, one must eat a variety of foods in sufficient quantities to fulfil the minimum nutritional requirements for healthy living.” Afolabi warned that failing to do so can lead to malnutrition, particularly undernutrition, which severely impacts health. He noted that poverty was a significant underlying cause of the development, stating, “Without financial resources or access to sufficient food, it becomes impossible to consume the necessary nutrients required for health.” ‘No substitutes for fruits and vegetables’ Afolabi stressed that there is no substitute for fruits and vegetables, adding, “You must get them from their natural environment and consume them. However, exotic fruits like apples, pears, grapes, and certain oranges are now expensive. Even those of us who work used to buy these fruits regularly, but can we still afford to buy them as much as we used to?” Read more https://supers.ng/hardship-families-embrace-charcoal-stoves-make-stew-with-garden-eggs/
