Crime#endbadgovernance Protest: Four Children Slumps In Court During Trial by Supersdotng(op): 1:30am On Nov 02, 2024
There was a mild drama at a Federal High Court in Abuja, on Friday, as no fewer than four children, among the 76 defendants, billed for arraignment over their involvement in the August #EndBadGovernance protest held across the country, collapsed during their trial.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the protest, which began on Aug. 1 to demand for good governance, ended on Aug. 10.

The Inspector-General (I-G) of Police had, earlier charged 11 of the protesters before Justice Emeka Nwite of a sister court on alleged treason, intent to destabilise Nigeria, conspiracy to commit felony and inciting mutiny, among others, which are punishable under Section 97 of the Penal Code.

The protesters were arrested in Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto and Gombe over the 10-day protest which resulted in violence and killings in parts of the country.

However, when the matter was called on Friday, I-G’s lawyer, Audu Garba, informed the court that the matter was slated for arraignment of the 76 defendants, who had been in detention.

Shortly after they were called into the dock to take their plea, four of the children slumped in the open court.

The four of them were Usman Fatihu (21 years), Muhammed Yahaya (14 years), Muktar Ishak Alhassan (16 years) and Mustapha Ibrahim (18 years).

They are 68th, 74th, 75th, and 76th defendants respectively in the 10-count charge bordering on treason, among other offences.

The trial judge, Obiora Egwuatu, abruptly stood down the trial and rose.

Justice Egwuatu came back after some minutes later to continue with the trial.

CrimeCourt Grants N10m Bail Each To 67 Minors Involved In #endbadgovernance Protest by Supersdotng(op): 1:14am On Nov 02, 2024
There was widespread outrage on Friday when Justice Obiora Egwuatu granted bail to approximately 67 minors, setting the bail amount at N10 million each, out of the 76 individuals who were arraigned for their involvement in the End Bad Governance protests that took place in August 2024.

This decision sparked significant public outcry, with many expressing concern over the implications of such high bail amounts for minors, who were simply exercising their right to protest.

Critics argued that the ruling reflects a troubling trend in the judicial handling of cases involving young Nigerians and raises questions about the fairness and accessibility of the legal system.

Activists and community leaders have called for a reevaluation of the legal processes involved, insisting that the government should prioritize dialogue and reform rather than punitive measures against young citizens advocating for change.

Those granted bail, who are under the age of 15, are required to present one surety, and this surety must be a civil servant.

Meanwhile, another 87 who are adults, are currently being arraigned on the same charges.

Those undergoing arraignment, are majorly from Kaduna State.

They are facing a ten-count charge bordering on alleged treason, and conspiracy to commit a felony with intent to destabilize Nigeria, which is contrary to section 96 and punishable under section 97 of the Penal Code Act.

BusinessSurvival Strategies When Expenses Overshoot Income by Supersdotng(op): 10:46am On Oct 30, 2024
Nigeria, like many other countries, has faced significant economic challenges in the past year, including hyperinflation, currency fluctuations, and an increasing cost of living that has almost reduced earnings to nothing. In this situation, individuals need different strategies to survive the challenges, writes DARE OLAWIN

In the past year, Nigerians have had their incomes eroded as daily expenses rise beyond imagination. People’s situation becomes dire when the cost of living surpasses income, leaving individuals and families struggling to make ends meet.

To survive this economic situation, individuals need to adopt various practical strategies for coping with the rising cost of living in Nigeria.

Before diving into solutions, it is essential to understand the scope of the problem. Nigeria’s inflation rate has been soaring, with prices of basic goods and services increasing exponentially. In the latest report, the National Bureau of Statistics said the inflation rate rose to 32.70 per cent in September, up from 32.15 per cent in August, due to increases in transportation costs and food prices.

The country’s economy has not been encouraging, leading to a widening gap between income and expenses. The rise in the exchange rate and the too much reliance on importation.

The inflation rate escalated for 13 consecutive months due to various factors, including the removal of fuel subsidies, which led to increased transportation and production costs, and the depreciation of the naira against major currencies.

A breakdown of the NBS monthly inflation report by The PUNCH showed that the average price of commodities moved from 22.41 per cent in May to 22.79 per cent in June. In July, the rate increased by 1.29 per cent to 24.08 per cent. August inflation was 25.80 per cent, September (26.72), October (27.33), November (28.20), and December (28.92).

As of late 2023, inflation surged, driven by higher prices for food, energy, and essential goods.

By January 2024, the inflation rate increased further to 29.90 per cent, mainly on the cost of food items.

It was 31.70 per cent in February, 33.20 per cent in March, 33.69 per cent in April, 33.95 per cent in May, and 34.19 per cent in June 2024 before it dropped to 33.40 per cent in July, 32.15 per cent in August and 32.70 per cent in September.

The World Bank recently released the Nigeria Development Update report, stating that over 129 million Nigerians now live below the national poverty line. This represented a sharp rise from 40.1 per cent in 2018 to 56 per cent in 2024.

The World Bank report read, “With growth proving too slow to outpace inflation, poverty has risen sharply. Since 2018, the share of Nigerians living below the national poverty line16 is estimated to have risen sharply from 40.1 per cent to 56.0 per cent.

“Combined with population growth, this means that some 129 million Nigerians are living in poverty. This stark increase partly reflects Nigeria’s beleaguered growth record. Real GDP per capita has not recovered to the level it was at before the oil price-induced recession in 2016.”

The World Bank added, “Multiple shocks in a context of high economic insecurity have deepened and broadened poverty, with over 115 million Nigerians estimated to have been poor in 2023. Since 2018/19, an additional nearly 35 million people have fallen into poverty, so that more than half of Nigerians (51.1 per cent of the population in 2023) are now estimated to live in poverty.”

The PUNCH observed that there was an increase from 115 million in 2023 to 129 million in 2024, which means that 14 million Nigerians have become poorer this year.

The World Bank report is a stark reality of how Nigerians fall into poverty day in and day out. Many have lost their sources of income, as many entrepreneurs run out of business due to the harsh economic conditions. Over the years, employers keep downsizing, sending many back into the hopeless labour market.

Under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the prices of items have skyrocketed. Food prices continue to jump, leaving many Nigerians with extreme hunger.

Energy cost is another challenge. Power and petrol costs have surged astronomically beyond the purchasing power of Nigerians.

Despite promising to bring down the price of petrol during his campaign, Tinubu’s administration had repeatedly increased the price of petrol by about 488 per cent—from N175 in May 2023 to N1,030 in October 2024, inflicting more pain on the already impoverished people.

What is the way out?

Here are some of the survival strategies:

Budgeting and prioritisation

At a time like this, budgeting becomes very important. Everybody needs to become an accountant, planning for their daily, weekly and monthly expenses. Create a budget for essential expenses, such as rent, food, and utilities. If you are married with kids, plan their academic needs. In your budget, prioritise needs over wants to ensure you allocate resources efficiently. There must be a scale of preference. List your needs according to their order of importance. Forgo what is not necessary and pay attention to what you really need.

Cutting expenses

Now that things are getting tough, each person must identify areas where he or she can reduce spending, such as cooking at home instead of eating out, using public transport when necessary, and driving or going out only when it is important.  It is important to stop food waste and adopt energy conservation. You may need to change your children’s school to a good but less expensive one. All these and more are strategies to cut expenses.

Increasing Income

During economic hardships, it is not advisable to have a single stream of income; one needs multiple sources of income to make ends meet. Explore ways to boost your income, such as taking on a side hustle or freelance work. You may consider a weekend job or a remote one.

You can also plan a shop you can retire to in the evening. Similarly, farming is an option to consider for those who have the means.

Aside from seeking other jobs, you can also sell unwanted items to make more money or ask for a raise at work. In short, develop multiple sources of income to reduce dependence on a single salary.

Seeking assistance

When things get tough, there is nothing wrong with seeking financial support. Reach out to family, friends, or non-profit organisations for temporary support. Many out there want to help; reach out to them. Though this is not sustainable, it is a stop-gap measure to reduce hunger.

Getting soft loans

Get a low-interest loan; borrow money to start a business or carry out important tasks. However, make sure you don’t borrow from loan apps, as you don’t want to face the humiliation that comes with it. It is also important to use the loan for something profitable. Do not borrow for parties or other frivolous things.

BusinessAdvantages Of A Weak Naira by Supersdotng(op): 5:45am On Oct 30, 2024
The meddlesome World Bank says that “By August 2024, the Ethiopian birr, the Nigerian naira, and Sundanese pound were among the worst (performing currencies) in the (African) region,” and added that “The naira continued losing value, with a year-to-date depreciation of about 43 per cent as of end-August.”

The acknowledgement by banker Chika Mbonu that the naira got weaker than the currency of many African countries has a counterpoise in the World Bank’s converse report that the Kenyan shilling got stronger by more than 21 per cent during the same period.

Bloomberg ranks the naira among the world’s 10 weakest currencies, three of which –Zambian kwacha, Angolan kwanza, and Nigeria’s naira– are from Africa. Their weakness is attributed to unstable commodity prices, inflationary pressures, and lack of dollar liquidity, a point of view that enables Euro-American metropolitan economies to prey on Third World economies.

But the weak naira needn’t be a disadvantage if President Bola Tinubu’s economic managers can flip things around, and take advantage of economies of large-scale production by getting the real sector, especially, to produce, for export, goods for which Nigeria has a comparative advantage. Investment banker, Dr. Nnaemeka Obiaraeri, says Nigeria has no currency problem but lacks productivity.

After the Naira gains strength from the accumulated foreign reserve therefrom, it should be further devalued– to maintain the weak regime that should earn even more convertible currency to finance the importation, and acquisition of more infrastructural and industrial production capacity that will eventually strengthen the naira.

But strengthening the naira will not be the only intent of this strategy, but is to reverse the current import-oriented trend of the Nigerian economy and tap the ready market for Nigeria’s manufactures in richer economies.

Nigeria’s fiscal, monetary, and macroeconomic policymakers should consider this unorthodox opportunity to strengthen Nigeria’s economy which is suffering from inappropriate economic policies that are imposed by Breton Woods institutions on an unwary political class.

Even non-economists know that consumers from other countries prefer to buy cheaper goods from economies whose currencies are relatively weaker than their own. America and China, countries with the world’s two biggest economies, are masters of this highly profitable game.

One obvious “low-hanging-fruit” place to start to take advantage of the tanking Naira is to encourage the export of petroleum products from the refineries of Dangote, Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited, and others, to countries with stronger currencies than the naira.

Though subsidy has been removed, the depreciation of the naira still makes smuggling of Nigeria’s petrol and other petroleum products relatively profitable in West and Central African countries. Nigeria should take advantage of this ready market and redeem the N132 trillion revenue that the World Bank claims Nigeria lost to the subsidy.

Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, who was with Governor Yemi Cardoso of Central Bank of Nigeria, at the Group of 20 Economies meeting hosted by the World Bank and International Monetary Fund in Washington, DC., gave a rather simplistic submission that all Nigeria needs to do to strengthen its currency is to increase petroleum production.

That is true, but it’s not good enough, for an economy with the capacity to add value to primary commodities. It only feeds the concerns of foreign investors whose interest is how to easily remit their earnings back home. That is why Muhamad Sani Abdullahi, CBN’s Deputy Governor for Economic Policies, cockily disclosed that “Nigeria now has $40.2 billion external reserve.”

Abdullahi boasts that ramping up the foreign reserves is “a significant move, up from a year ago when (Nigeria had) less than $34 billion… to cover at least 14.3 months of import for goods and services, and 15 months for goods only,” neglects the productive capacity of Nigeria’s economy.

Abdullahi should have addressed Arise News TV Rotus Odirri’s inquiry about

plans by the government, if any, to return Nigeria Incorporated to work again. The real sector is key to strengthening the currency of any country.

Invisible Ekperikpe Ekpo, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), should expand the production of Liquified Petroleum Gas, used for cooking, instead of halting the export. His counterpart in the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, plans to raise daily petroleum production by one million for export.

Nigeria’s Federal and state governments can jointly nudge the private sector to invest in the country’s agriculture and agro-allied sector to cultivate more agricultural produce and as well as turn the commodities into industrial manufactures for export.

If, for instance, Southern Nigerians can turn agricultural crops into industrial raw materials for the pharmaceutical and textile industries, and Northern Nigerians can revive the hides & skins trade, for export, Nigeria can turn the pitiable foreign exchange table around.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has already given an undertaken that if he is re-elected in the November 2024 off-season gubernatorial election, he will promote agriculture and food security. He may just be able to motivate his constituents to supply cheaper food crops to Americans who are currently concerned about the high cost of foodstuffs.

To attract foreign students and their convertible currency to the Nigerian economy, as they used to do in the 1960s and 1970s, the Federal and state governments should invest in the quantum improvement of tertiary educational institutions.

An ancillary to that is to also improve the medical infrastructure to reverse the medical tourism that Nigerians make to other countries and attract patients from countries that hitherto provide medical treatment for Nigeria’s money-miss-road elite.

The revelation by Sule Abdulaziz, Chief Executive Officer of Transmission Company that “(Nigeria supplies) Togo, we supply Benin (Republic) and Niger (Republic)… they get power from Nigeria on a 24-hour basis and they are paying,” is enough motivation for Nigeria to expand the capacity of its electricity sector to be able to further expand supply to the western and central African markets.

The Federal, state, and local governments can agree to divert funds from Excess Crude Account, or from savings made from the removal of petrol subsidy, to invest in electricity, probably the most foundational infrastructure for the success of Nigeria’s industrialisation strategy.

EducationCourt Stops JAMB From Restricting Underage Students by Supersdotng(op): 5:10pm On Oct 27, 2024
The Delta State High Court in Warri has issued an order restraining the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board JAMB from implementing its recent policy requiring a minimum admissible age of 16 years for university admissions in the country pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed against the board.

JAMB, in a statement on October 16, stated that only candidates who will be 16 years old by August 2025 would be admitted to tertiary institutions.

This directive was a follow up to the new policy that the ministry of education introduced which states the adoption of 18 years as the minimum age for admission into tertiary institutions.

JAMB, however, made an exception for students seeking admission in the 2024/2025 session.

Dissatisfied with JAMB’s directive, John Aikpokpo-Martins, a former Nigerian Bar Association chairman, Warri branch, dragged the admission board to court.

The sole applicant, Aikpokpo-Martins (for and on behalf of all candidates born on the 1st of September 2009 to the 31st December, 2009, who wrote and passed JAMB exams in 2024), in a suit marked W/311/FHR/2021, sued JAMB and Edwin Clark University as 1st and 2nd respondents respectively.

In a ruling delivered on Thursday, Justice Anthony Akpovi granted all the reliefs sought by the applicant, as confirmed by a Certified True Copy (CTC) obtained by Sunday PUNCH.

PoliticsBuy Petrol At N1,000 Per Litre; CNG At N200, Tinubu Tells Nigerians by Supersdotng(op): 7:37am On Oct 23, 2024
President Bola Tinubu has told Nigerian motorists to either buy petrol at N1000 or the compressed Natural Gas (CNG) at N200.

The President said this during a meeting with the company’s executive on Tuesday at the State House, Abuja.

He also praised NIPCO’s contributions to the nation’s energy transition efforts, particularly its support for the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI).

During the meeting, President Tinubu acknowledged NIPCO’s role as a critical player in enhancing the adoption of CNG as an alternative fuel.

He noted that such investments aligned with his administration’s energy security and economic diversification strategy.

The President emphasised the importance of public-private partnerships in driving the transition to cleaner and more affordable energy solutions for Nigerians.

Tinubu lauded NIPCO’s efforts in promoting and supporting the “Switch to CNG” campaign, which boosted public awareness and provided affordable CNG conversion kits even before the official kickoff of the Presidential CNG Initiative.

He highlighted the significance of the initiative in reducing the nation’s reliance on petrol and cutting down fuel costs for consumers.

“CNG, being a cleaner and more affordable fuel, reduces the carbon footprint and saves consumers significant fuel costs.

“Nigeria’s motorists can buy petrol at N1,000 per litre or equivalent gas per Standard Cubic Meter at N200.

“We have also introduced incentives for commercial motorists to convert from petrol to gas ‘free of cost,’” Tinubu said.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to providing a conducive environment for private sector investments and expanding Nigeria’s CNG infrastructure to enhance energy efficiency and economic growth.

PoliticsGrid Collapses 105 Times In 10 Years Despite $1.4bn Loans by Supersdotng(op): 7:06am On Oct 21, 2024
Despite the huge investment in the power sector, the national grid collapsed about 105 times under the administrations of President Bola Tinubu and his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, The PUNCH reports.

Findings on Sunday showed that Nigeria secured about 10 loans worth $4.36bn from the World Bank over the past decade to address key challenges in its power sector.

Although not all 10 World Bank loans have been disbursed completely, the Federal Government and other multilateral agencies have supported the country’s power sector financially.

They have provided billions of naira to revamp the industry but despite these funds, the sector is still struggling, witnessing incessant grid collapses, which has repeatedly plunge the country into widespread blackouts.

Both Buhari and Tinubu, members of the All Progressives Congress, promised to turn things around positively in the power sector.

However, it appears the challenges of the power sector overwhelmed the Buhari administration, which took over former President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Congress.

Data obtained from different sources, including the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, showed that the grid collapsed approximately 93 times during the eight-year rule of Buhari, from June 2015 to May 2023.

The national power grid, according to NERC, is a vast network of electrical transmission lines that link power stations to end-use customers across the country and it is designed to function within specific stability boundaries, including voltage (330kV ± 5.0 per cent) and frequency (50Hz ± 0.5 per cent).

“Any deviation from these stability ranges can result in decreased power quality and, in severe cases, cause widespread power outages ranging from a partial collapse of a section of the grid to a full system collapse.

“When the electricity demand is higher than the supply, the grid frequency drops. Conversely, if supply surpasses demand, the frequency increases. In reaction to the grid operating at a frequency outside of the normal operation range (especially when the frequency is too low), safety settings on generation units may cause the units to shut down.

“This often exacerbates the frequency imbalance on the grid thereby causing more generation units to shut down resulting in a full or partial system collapse,” the regulator explained.

The PUNCH reports that anytime the grid collapses, the majority of electricity consumers are thrown into darkness, affecting businesses and social activities.

Industry data showed that under Buhari, the grid collapsed three times in 2015, 28 times in 2016, 24 times in 2017, 13 times in 2018, and 11 times in 2019.

The grid frequency appeared to improve from 2020 to 2023 as the grid collapsed 14 times within this period until Buhari vacated office on May 29, 2023.

It was observed that the Tinubu administration carried on with the grid collapse cases, with three of such incidents occurring between June and December 2023.

Nigerians endured more nationwide blackouts on September 14, 2023 when the grid collapsed due to a fire on a major transmission line.

On September 20, 2023, The PUNCH reported that Nigeria witnessed another round of widespread blackouts across the country the preceding day as the national power grid collapsed again, making it the third grid collapse in about five days during that period.

Since January 2024 till date, the grid has collapsed about nine times. Last week, the grid collapsed three times with its attendant blackouts, sparking reactions from Nigerians. As of now, the Tinubu administration has recorded no fewer than 12 collapses in 16 months.

On Saturday, the national grid collapsed – third in the week – as power generation went off around 8:16am. This was after the grid tripped off on Monday. It went off again on Tuesday when it was being restored.

World Bank loans

Nigeria secured about 10 loans worth $4.36bn from the World Bank over the past decade to address the power sector challenges.

The loans, which are aimed at supporting infrastructural development, distribution reforms, and renewable energy initiatives, are at different stages of progress.

While some are still disbursing, others have been signed but are yet to begin disbursement. However, one loan approved in 2014 has been terminated.

Findings by The PUNCH from data sourced from the global financial institution revealed that four loans, amounting to $2bn, have been signed but are yet to disburse any funds.

These include the Sustainable Power and Irrigation Project, valued at $500m, which was signed in September 2024, and three components under the Nigeria Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up Project, totalling $750m, approved in December 2023.

Five loans are actively disbursing funds, though large portions of their allocations remain undrawn.

These include the Power Sector Recovery Performance-Based Operation, the North Core Regional Power Interconnector, the Nigeria Electrification Project, and the NG-Electricity Transmission Project.

Together, these projects represent $2.06bn, or 47.25 per cent of the total loan portfolio.

Out of the five loans currently under disbursement, Nigeria is already making repayments on three of them.

One example is the Nigeria Electrification Project, which has disbursed $269.67m from a total allocation of $350m.

Similarly, the North Core Regional Power Interconnector has released $15.74m from a $27.4m facility. The NG-Electricity Transmission Project, with two components worth $486m, is also disbursing funds while repayments are ongoing.

These projects reflect the country’s efforts to balance loan repayments with the need for critical infrastructure investment.

One project has been terminated. The Nigeria Power Sector Guarantees Project, initially valued at $125m, was cancelled on May 1, 2014, without any funds being disbursed.

The terminated project was aimed at improving electricity supply for consumers by supporting private sector-led investments in power generation and distribution.

It was designed to back key reforms in Nigeria’s power sector through a series of partial risk guarantees.

These guarantees were intended to support three key areas: greenfield Independent Power Producers’ projects, the privatisation of Generation Companies, and the turnaround of distribution companies.

However, this project was terminated, and nothing was disbursed by the World Bank. There was no available information on the reason for the termination.

The PUNCH learnt that World Bank loans were usually tied to targets, and failure to meet such targets would either lead to a delay in disbursement or outright cancellation of the loan.

Despite the World Bank’s funding support over the years, delays in disbursement remain a significant concern, as $2.96bn of the total $4.36bn are still undisbursed.

The largest disbursement so far has been recorded under the Nigeria Electrification Project, which focuses on improving rural and off-grid energy access. So far, $269.67m has been released from the $350m earmarked for the project.

Notably, a substantial portion of the loans was secured under President Tinubu’s administration, highlighting the government’s renewed push to revitalise the country’s energy sector.

Since Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, the World Bank has approved new electricity loans over $1.901bn, representing 44 per cent of the total loan portfolio over the decade.

In December 2023, Tinubu’s government secured $750m for the Nigeria Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up Project, a move aligned with the administration’s focus on expanding renewable energy.

Also, the Sustainable Power and Irrigation Project, valued at $500m, was signed in September 2024 to enhance power generation and agricultural irrigation.

While the loans reflect a strategic commitment to addressing Nigeria’s energy deficit through renewable energy and infrastructure development, the slow pace of disbursements raises questions about project implementation and the government’s ability to unlock the full potential of these funds.

Despite the loans, the Nigerian power sector still suffers incessant blackouts, metering gaps, and low access to electricity, especially in rural areas.

Many industries, small businesses, and companies, among others, have collapsed as a result of the poor supply of electricity in Nigeria. This is despite the privatisation of the successor power generation and distribution companies in November 2013.

Nigeria’s power firms generate and supply between 3,500 megawatts and 5,500MW of electricity to over 200 million citizens across the country.

There is the issue of low power supply. For instance, the grid delivers only 1,000MW to a city of 25 million people. By contrast, Shanghai, with roughly the same population, supplies more than 30,000MW at peak demand.

Consumers kick

In an interview with one of our correspondents, the Convener of the Electricity Consumer Protection Advocacy Centre, Princewill Okorie, expressed worry that electricity customers, especially those on estimated billing, continued to pay for darkness as the grid kept collapsing.

Okorie alleged that substandard equipment must have been used for power infrastructure.

According to him, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Ministry of Power pay more attention to the distribution companies and their revenue, ignoring the rights of the consumers, especially in the area of metering.

He challenged the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, asking what it had been doing to protect electricity consumers.

FamilyMan Discovers Pastor Who Officiated His Wedding Is The Father Of His Two Kids by Supersdotng(op): 6:55am On Oct 21, 2024
A man has recently been left shocked after a paternity test revealed that the pastor who officiated his wedding is the father of his two children.

A puzzling revelation,, which occured in Zimbabwe, has emerged involving a pastor from End Time Messages church in Chiredzi, who has been ordered to pay child support.

Man.

DNA tests confirmed that the pastor, Vhetu, is the biological father of two children born to Eunice Mururi, whose wedding to Farai Hatirarami he had officiated.

After the truth came to light, Mururi’s marriage to Hatirarami collapsed.

Mururi has now taken Pastor Vhetu to court, seeking $700 monthly child support for their 8-year-old and 4-year-old children.

Pastor Vhetu made a stunning admission in court, acknowledging he’s the father of two children with a woman whose wedding he officiated.

However, he’s now seeking a reduced child maintenance payment, citing irregular income from tithes and offerings, mostly received as food hampers rather than cash.

His lawyer, Farai Chauke, argued that Vhetu lacks a regular salary, limiting his ability to pay more than 150 ZiG per child.

Pastor Vhetu’s child support case has left the community reeling in shock.

Magistrate Diana Musiiwa deemed his offer of 150 ZiG per child as “insincere” and ordered him to pay $175 per month for both children instead.

This ruling came after DNA tests confirmed Vhetu’s paternity of the two children born to Eunice Mururi, whose wedding to Farai Hatirarami he had officiated.

BusinessMinimum Wage Deadline: No Action In 26 States As Labour Blows Hot by Supersdotng(op): 12:35pm On Oct 20, 2024
Nearly two months after President Bola Tinubu signed the new minimum wage into law, findings revealed that only two states, Edo and Adamawa, have commenced payment of N70,000 to the least-paid workers in their various states.

Eight states, Lagos, Rivers, Ondo Ogun, Kogi, Gombe and Bauchi said they would be paying a different amount.

This came as Organised Labour gave all governors an October deadline to implement the new wage or face industrial unrest.

Of note is that while Edo State started paying its workers N70,000 in June, two months before it was signed into law, Adamawa State started implementing the N70,000 new minimum wage in August.
States where wages have been announced

Lagos
Among states that have displayed preparedness to pay the new wage is Lagos.

Recall that Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on October 16, said his administration was ready to pay N85,000 as minimum wage.

The decision was said to have been made unilaterally without negotiations or agreement with Organised Labour in the state.

However, Sunday Vanguard learnt the leadership of Labour in the state would begin negotiation with government on October 21, 2024.

Meanwhile, Sanwo-Olu, in an interview, said: “I just want to let you know that the minimum wage in Lagos as we discussed with our workers’ union is N85,000 as of today. It is not a competition. I’m not saying that we are paying more than other states. It is a function of affordability and the function of capacity.

“I would like to come back in January to say that I have been able to increase the minimum wage of Lagos’ public workers to N100,000, not because I want to make anybody look bad, but because I want my people to have a living wage.”

However, a statement jointly signed by the Chairman and Secretary of Lagos State Public Service Joint Negotiating Council, NJIC, Olusegun Balogun and Toba Odumosu, confirmed the planned negotiation meeting with government.

BusinessFG Plans 5% Tax On Telecoms Services, Others by Supersdotng(op): 7:39am On Oct 20, 2024
The Federal Government FG has proposed a five per cent excise duty on telecommunications services, gaming, and betting activities as part of a new bill to overhaul Nigeria’s tax framework.

The bill, titled, “A Bill for an Act to Repeal Certain Acts on Taxation and Consolidate the Legal Frameworks relating to Taxation and Enact the Nigeria Tax Act to Provide for Taxation of Income, Transactions, and Instruments, and Related Matters,” was dated October 4, 2024, and obtained from the National Assembly.

An analysis of the proposed legislation on Friday showed that it seeks to introduce excise duties on services such as telecoms, gaming, gambling, lotteries, and betting provided in Nigeria.

A section of the bill read, “The amount of an excisable transaction is the amount chargeable for the service by the service provider, both in money or money’s worth.

“Services, including telecommunications, gaming, gambling, betting, and lotteries however described, provided in Nigeria shall be charged with duties of excise at the rates specified under the Tenth Schedule to this Act in a manner as may be prescribed by the Service.”

A breakdown of the excise duty structure in the bill indicates that telecoms services, including postpaid and prepaid services regulated by the Nigerian Communications Commission, will attract a five per cent duty.

The same rate will apply to gaming, gambling, betting, and lottery services.

The bill also introduces guidelines on currency transactions, specifying that any difference between the prevailing Central Bank of Nigeria exchange rate and the actual transaction rate will be subject to excise duty.

The National Chairperson of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Ajuri Ahmed, has hinted at the possibility of a coalition among major political parties to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s expected re-election campaign in the 2027 elections.

According to reports, President Tinubu is a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Ahmed made the remarks during the NNPP’s campaign launch in Akure, Ondo State, ahead of the state’s upcoming governorship election on November 16.

He disclosed that discussions were ongoing to prevent the APC from remaining in power beyond 2027 and cautioned other political parties to stay alert and resist attempts by the APC to create divisions within their ranks.

However, the NNPP chieftain did not disclose which other political parties were involved in the coalition talks.

Ahmed added that if the coalition discussions fail, the NNPP is prepared to go it alone.

“Our door is open for any coalition ahead of the 2027 election. And if it doesn’t work, our party is capable of standing on its own,” he stated.

Additionally, he expressed concern over the possibility of election manipulation by the APC in the upcoming governorship election in Ondo State, emphasizing the importance of NNPP supporters voting and safeguarding their votes.

“There is widespread fear that the ruling party may attempt to manipulate the election in their favor because they do not want strong opposition,” Mr. Ahmed said.

He stressed the need for credible party agents to protect the votes before, during, and after the election.

CelebritiesVerydarkman, EFCC: Falanas Demand Public Apology From Bobrisky by Supersdotng(op): 6:03pm On Oct 16, 2024
Popular human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) and his son, the popular musician and activist Folarin Falana, widely known as Falz, have jointly called for a public apology and a retraction of the defamatory statements made by crossdresser Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky.

In a recent statement, the Falana duo expressed their concern over the impact of Bobrisky’s remarks, which they believe have unjustly tarnished their reputations.

The demands for a public apology and retraction come in response to the circulation of audio recordings online, in which Bobrisky made several unverified claims about the Falanas.

These recordings have raised significant concerns regarding the accuracy and intent behind the statements, prompting the Falana family to take a stand.

They argue that the unfounded allegations not only damage their personal and professional reputations but also contribute to a culture of misinformation that can have far-reaching consequences.

The Falanas are seeking to address this issue not just for themselves, but to uphold the principle of truthfulness in public discourse.

The controversy began when Bobrisky, in an audio clip shared by controversial social media critic Martin Otse, alias VeryDarkMan, alleged that he or she contacted Falz to solicit his help in persuading his father, Femi Falana, to secure a presidential pardon. According to Bobrisky, this supposed favor cost N10 million. She or he further claimed that he or she requested N3 million from Falz to ensure preferential treatment at Kirikiri Correctional Centre.

In a second audio clip also shared by VeryDarkMan, Bobrisky alleged that she or he had paid N5 million upfront to a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) to facilitate a Federal Government pardon concerning charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In response to these allegations, Falana’s legal team, through Olorunfemi Akinyemi and Taiwo E. Olawanle, issued a strongly worded letter dated October 14, 2024. The letter categorically refuted Bobrisky’s claims, describing them as baseless and harmful to the reputations of both Femi Falana and his son, Falz.

The legal representatives demanded a full public retraction of the defamatory statements and a formal apology to be published on all platforms where the audios were circulated. The letter stressed that failure to comply could result in further legal action.
