Travel28 Pilgrims Die In Tragic Road Crash by Supersdotng(op): 2:54pm On Aug 21, 2024
No fewer than 28 people were killed and 23 others injured as a bus conveying Pakistani pilgrims to Iraq overturned in the central Iranian province of Yazd on Tuesday night.
Local media reports have it that the incident occurred in Dehshir village, Taft County, at around 9:50 p.m. local time (18:20 GMT) Tuesday night.

The Director-General of the provincial crisis management department, Mohammad-Ali Malekzadeh, said on Wednesday that the bus was en-route to the Iran-Iraq border carrying Pakistani passengers, who sought to attend the Arbaeen ceremonies.

Malekzadeh added that out of those injured, 14 were in critical condition and under treatment in the province’s medical centers, stressing that the provincial authorities were ensuring the necessary coordination with the Iranian Foreign Ministry to transfer those killed and wounded in the incident to Pakistan on board a plane.

While commenting on the cause of the accident, Iran’s Traffic Police Chief Seyyed Teymour Hosseini said initial investigations showed that a technical defect in the bus’ braking system had led to the incident’s occurrence.

He said that the traffic police’s experts were on the scene conducting further investigations.

Supers.ng reported that Mojisola’s lifeless body was discovered at a refuse dump in the Aleniboro area of Ilorin on August 11, 2024.

The disturbing find was reported by Mr. Olorunoje, a resident, who stumbled upon the body while returning from the mosque.

According to a statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, a missing persons report was filed by Miss Blessing O. on August 13, 2024.

Miss Blessing, a resident of Gbomi’s area in Offa, Kwara State, reported that her roommate, Mojisola, had been missing since August 9, 2024.

Mojisola.

Miss Mojisola was last heard from after receiving a phone call from Timileyin, who had introduced her to Mr. Adebayo Happiness, a student from Summit University.

Happiness had reportedly invited Mojisola to a night party under the guise of hiring her as his girlfriend for a fee of fifteen thousand naira (#15,000.00).

Upon arriving in Ilorin, Mojisola expressed her unease about the situation and mentioned that the party did not appear to be taking place as promised.

Shortly thereafter, her phone went silent, and all attempts by Miss Blessing to reach her failed.

PoliticsFood Crisis May Worsen As Flood Hits 10 States by Supersdotng(op): 3:29am On Aug 19, 2024
Following the floods that have ravaged farmlands in the northern part of the country, agricultural experts and big-time players in the agro-allied industry have sounded the alarm over an impending food crisis across the country as agricultural fortunes dip in the North.

The experts insist that unless urgent and very drastic steps are immediately taken, the crisis may worsen as floods continue to ravage farmlands in the northern states.

Ten states, namely Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Nasarawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Zamfara, Yobe, Sokoto and Kebbi are highly affected, following heavy rainfall in the region, The PUNCH learnt.

In an interview with The PUNCH, an agricultural investor in Toro LGA of Bauchi State, Bello Yakazsi, urged the government to declare an emergency in the food sector across the country.

Yakazsi, said, “While the situation we are currently experiencing in the North can be said to be a peculiar one, it is high time that the Federal Government declared a state of emergency in the country’s agricultural sector.

“We have limited powers over the strange and dynamic play of Mother Nature but the little efforts we can muster to save ourselves from hunger and starvation must be put in place by all the government agencies. This is not the time for politics.”

The PUNCH investigation showed that continuous rainfall across the region posed a threat to grains and farmlands, which could lead to a poor harvest and hunger as farmers battle the scourge of drought.

As a result of the effect of the twin threat of flood and drought, some farmers in Kano State, especially those within the 14 LGAs that are at a high risk of flooding as predicted by the National Emergency Management Agency, have continued to express fears about possible flooding in the state and have begun praying against flooding as rainfall persists across the 44 Local Government Areas.

One of the farmers in Rimin Gado, Mallam Musa Sani, told The PUNCH, “Since the beginning of August, we’ve been experiencing heavy rainfall, which lasts for long hours, on a daily basis.

“As you know, too much rainfall does not allow crops to grow speedily. So, we fear that once flood occurs, farmers are at the risk of losing their crops.”

An official of the State Emergency Management Agency, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, confirmed to The PUNCH on Saturday that “even though the agency has yet to receive the comprehensive report on the flood from our assessment team, we are very worried about the situation but, we cannot act without any official report.”

Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Haruna Mairiga, told our correspondent in Dutse that over 2,744 hectares of farmlands had been washed away by flood in Jigawa State. The floods ravaged 12 LGAs, namely Buji, Kafin Hausa, Auyo, Hadejia, Birniwa, Malam Madori, Garki, Taura, Gwaram, Dutse, Kiyawa and Jahun.

“No fewer than 2,744 hectares of farmlands have been washed away by the flood across the 12 affected LGAs. From August 1 to 13, 2024, the state witnessed intermittent downpours leading to several incidences of flood and the death of 21 persons as well as the destruction of farmlands and houses,” Mairiga said.

He added that farmers in the state had lost over N1bn of farm produce and crops to flood.

Mansur Musa, Chairman of Kiyawa LGA, one of the worst-hit LGAs, said many farmlands and villages, as well as the LGA secretariat, have been submerged by water.

In Zamfara State, Shehu Shinkafi, a farmer on the outskirts of Shinkafi LGA told The PUNCH that many farmers were expecting a bumper harvest following the stability of water in their farms.

However, he expressed fears following the emergence of heavy rains in the state in recent times.

The PUNCH reports SEMA as stating that the downpour, which started last Friday and destroyed many farmlands, towns, and villages, lasted for more than 12 hours in all parts of the state. According to a report by NEMA, more heavy rainfall is expected in the state.

The agency had predicted that eight LGAs in the state - Bungudu, Gummi, Gusau, Bakura, Maradun, Talata-Mafara, Shinkafi, and Zurmi – would be affected by flooding during this year’s rainy season.

This was disclosed by the agency’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, in Gusau during the sensitisation programme for the 2024 downscaling of flood early warning strategies for early actions.

Also, the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency predicted that in this year’s annual flooding outlook, 31 states with 148 LGAs would be within the high flood-risk areas, while 35 states, including the FCT and 249 LGAs, were considered within the moderate flood-risk areas. The remaining 377 LGAs were forecasted for the low flood-risk areas.

Last Friday’s downpour destroyed thousands of hectares of farmlands in Zamfara, while properties worth billions of naira were lost.

On August 16, a devastating flood killed 11 people and over 500 houses affected in Gummi town, the headquarters of Gummi LGA of the state.

Ahmed Bala Gusau, who confirmed the incident, said the agency had visited the affected communities.

“It’s really sad and unfortunate as we have on several occasions enlightened the people of the state of the measures they were supposed to take to avoid flooding,” Gusau said.

Gusau pointed out that, some of the reasons for the flooding included dumping refuse on waterways, building on waterways, heavy rainfall and lack of drainages.

Other factors according to him were, poor building structures, poor attitude to refuse disposal, drainage and environmental laws.

One of the affected victims, Sanusi Garba, said, “We are seriously in need of urgent assistance because we are now homeless, we need food and other necessary daily needs. We call on the state government to as a matter of urgency to come to our aid.”

The Secretary, Zamfara State Emergency Management Agency,

Meanwhile, a large-scale farmer in the state, Alhaji Garba Musa, advised farmers to ensure they did not block the major water routes within their farmlands to avoid flooding and destruction of their crops.

“As we still await more rainfall, I am appealing to farmers in the state to avoid blocking waterways within their farmlands so that the water can flow easily whenever it rains. I also urge those whose crops are ready for harvest to quickly do so to avoid losing them to flooding.”

The PUNCH investigation revealed that Yobe State was also grappling with a severe flooding crisis that has left numerous towns and villages submerged, posing a significant threat to the livelihoods of farmers in the state.

Prayer sessions have been organised as residents seek spiritual solutions to the torrential rainfall across the LGAs and Emirates in the state.

Jakusko Local Government Area has been particularly hard hit, with several towns and villages bearing the brunt of the destructive floods.

Rice farms in the riverine areas of the LGA have been completely submerged due to the relentless downpours affecting communities in Matakudkum, Dumbari, Guzumbana, Gwayo, Tasga and Jagondamasa.

Farmers in the region told The PUNCH they were in a dire situation, with many expressing fears of losing their entire season’s harvest.

Musa Dikko, a rice farmer, emphasised the urgent need for “on-the-ground assessments to determine the scale of the devastation and facilitate appropriate relief efforts.”

In light of the escalating crisis, organisations such as the United Nations Development Programme, Food and Agriculture Organisation, NEMA, SEMA and the North-East Development Commission have been implored to intervene swiftly and provide the necessary assistance to rescue the farming communities and the affected populations in the region.

“Collaborative efforts are essential to avert further devastation and alleviate the sufferings of those impacted by the floods in Yobe State,” said Muktahr Ahmed, a group coordinator with the state SEMA, said.

Flooding has also affected parts of Nasarawa State, destroying crops and farmlands in the North-Central state.

Although there was no heavy rainfall around most communities between August 2 and 12, torrential rains suddenly resurfaced across the 13 LGAs of the state, including Lafia, the state capital, and washed away several farmlands, The PUNCH learnt.

Heavy rainfalls were witnessed.

The floods ravaged a five-hectare farmland belonging to a former Commissioner of Youth and Sports Development in the state, Amb. Lucky Yargwa, destroyed crops worth millions of naira in his farmland located at the Farin Ruwa Development Area in Wamba LGA.

“About five hectares of my farm was destroyed by the floods. What is remaining now is not up to 20 per cent of what I planted. I will not complain too much because I believe that God knows all things. Though millions of naira have gone, I see it as part of the challenges in the world,” Yargwa said.

Speaking on the development, the state Chairman of All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Isaac Kigbu, said, “The situation calls for concern. I want to call on the government to help us, so, that we can embark on dry-season farming. We (farmers) will appreciate all the assistance that we can get at this moment from the government and other good citizens of the country.”

The PUNCH correspondents in Bauchi, Sokoto and Kebbi states report that there has been consistent rainfall in the past few weeks and almost daily.

However, the worst hit farmlands, it was learnt, were in three LGAs in Sokoto, as farmers in these areas complained that they had been experiencing floods in recent times due to the excessive rainfall.

According to a statement made available to our correspondent by the spokesman of the state SEMA, Abdullahi Ghani, farmlands in Tangaza, Gudu and Gada LGAs are mostly affected.

“In Tangaza Local Government Area, over 73 farmlands were submerged as a result of heavy downpour, which resulted in flooding.

“The affected communities are Sakkwai, Ruwa-wuri, Takkau with affected areas as Tashar Atto and Unguwar -kara area.

“Also in Gudu Local Government Area, over 80 farmlands were also affected as a result of heavy downpours and floods, which resulted in the breakdown of the Earth Dam from Kutufare village.

“The affected communities are Balle, Kurdula, Kutufare, Tungar-Balle, and Ayama with about 3,300 households affected in the process.”

Abdullahi Bello, a farmer from Gudu LGA, said, “The flood has washed away my farms completely. All my hope is gone. Help us appeal to the government and authority concerned to come to our aid on how to come out of this disaster.”

In Kaduna, despite the state government’s efforts to mitigate the effects of the floods, several rice farmers lamented the losses suffered from the heavy rains.

However, Muhammad Umar, Chairman, Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria in Kaduna State, expressed optimism, saying the current rainfall across the state has brought hope for some crops to recover for a bumper harvest.

“All that is needed is for the state government to assist farmers with the necessary farm inputs like fertiliser. Certainly, the yield will be low. Thank God, it has been raining. If the rain continues, I believe some crops can pick up,” he said.

Umar also advocated for the revival of the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, which he believes will guarantee food security and correct past mistakes.

“I think security should be improved, and the government should review the Anchor Borrowers Programme of the last administration on rice production. I think that will help the government and the citizens.”

As Umar noted, the government had disbursed trillions of naira on intervention funds to support the agricultural sector over the years.

One such was the Anchor Borrowers Programme of the Central Bank of Nigeria, which was established in November 2015 to create economic linkages between Small Holder Farmers and Anchors, but has been discontinued with the apex bank currently trying to recover funds.

PoliticsFuel: NNPC Blames Distribution Challenges As Petrol Shortage Enters 6th Week by Supersdotng(op): 12:23am On Aug 19, 2024
As ongoing acute petrol shortage enters the sixth week, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited NNPC has again attributed it to “distribution challenges”.

The current petrol scarcity, the third in 2024, began early July with NNPC attributing it to logistics challenges faced in the transfer of the product from mother vessel to daughter vessels.

The company had said: “The NNPC Ltd wishes to state that the fuel queues seen in the FCT and some parts of the country, were as a result of disruption of ship-to-ship (STS) transfer of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, between Mother Vessels and Daughter Vessels resulting from recent thunderstorm.

“The adverse weather condition has also affected berthing at jetties, truck load-outs and transportation of products to filling stations, causing a disruption in station supply logistics.

“The NNPC Ltd also states that due to flammability of petroleum products and in compliance with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) regulations, it was impossible to load petrol during rainstorms and lightning”.

But with the shortage not showing any sign of improvement, the national oil company in a two paragraph statement on Sunday said it regretted the situation.

NNPC Limited Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Mr Olufemi Soneye said: “The NNPC Ltd regrets the tightness in fuel supply witnessed in some parts of Lagos and the FCT, which is as a result of distribution challenges.

“The Company further urges motorists to shun panic buying as it is working round the clock with relevant stakeholders to restore normalcy”.

Checks around Abuja Central Area yesterday showed that queues remained long at very few stations opened to consumers.

Outside the city centre, the situation remained dire with outlets operated by Independent marketers raising their pump price to N950 per litre against N720 per litre before the shortage began over a month ago.

The Public Relations Officer, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN, Chief Chinedu Ukadike told Vanguard the marketers had not received the product for some time.

Ukadike explained that it might not be unconnected with the impending delivery of premium motor spirit, pms, from the Dangote Refinery.

He noted that marketers were threading softly in order not to incur losses if the petrol price crashes as a result of supply from the refinery.

He said: “Supply has become epileptic again and we have not received adequate supply in recent times, remember we still depend on the importation of products. Once there is any shortage in supply or logistic problem or procrastination, then the impact is almost immediate.

“I also believe that since Dangote announced its petrol supply intention, those supplying NNPC are skeptical of bringing in products because they don’t want to incur the losses which they suffered when Dangote entered the market and slashed the price of AGO (Automated Gas Oil popularly known as diesel).

“These are market indices and someone has to be careful not to plunge itself into unnecessary deficit. For us independent marketers, most of the products come from NNPC Retails but the company has not supplied us with any product. They allocate products to tank farm owners”.

Car Talk20 Budget-friendly Cars With Low Maintenance Costs by Supersdotng(op): 8:09pm On Aug 17, 2024
With the removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria and the frequent challenges of fuel scarcity, vehicle (cars) maintenance and fuel efficiency have become crucial considerations for many Nigerians.

As the cost of fuel soars, the need for cars that offer both low fuel consumption and affordable repair costs is more pressing than ever.

Additionally, the economic climate demands vehicles that can withstand Nigeria’s road conditions while keeping maintenance expenses minimal.

PUNCH Online explores 20 of the cheapest vehicles to maintain in Nigeria, focusing on those that strike the perfect balance between fuel efficiency, durability, and repair affordability amidst the current economic challenges.

The price range estimation could be based on the Nigerian market, where factors like import duties, exchange rates, and vehicle conditions (new or used) can significantly influence the final cost.

New vs Fairly Used?

When considering the best vehicles for Nigeria’s current economic situation, it’s important to weigh the options between new, fairly used, and Tokunbo (foreign used) cars.

New cars offer the advantage of a warranty and the latest technology, but they come with a higher price tag, depending on the model.

Fairly used cars, typically Nigerian-owned and driven, provide a middle ground, offering good-conditioned vehicles at a more affordable price.

Tokunbo cars, often imported from abroad, are popular for their lower prices, depending on make, model, and year.

However, while Tokunbo vehicles are budget-friendly, buyers should carefully inspect them to avoid hidden repair costs, as some may have been subjected to harsher conditions abroad.

Fuel efficiency

Fuel efficiency is like how far your car can go on a certain amount of fuel. If a car has a fuel efficiency of 30–40 miles per gallon (mpg), it means that for every gallon of fuel you put in, the car can travel between 30 and 40 miles.

So, if you imagine pouring a gallon of fuel into your car (about 4 litres), and then driving, the car will keep going for 30 to 40 miles before using up that gallon. A higher mpg number means the car uses fuel more efficiently, letting you drive farther on the same amount of fuel.

In simple terms, a car with good fuel efficiency means you’ll spend less money on fuel because the car doesn’t need as much of it to go the same distance.

Each option has its pros and cons, making it crucial to align your choice with your budget, maintenance capacity, and long-term vehicle needs.

When considering both fuel efficiency and repair costs, here are 20 of the cheapest vehicles to maintain:

Munachimso Brian Nwana, a 22-year-old content developer and culinary consultant, holds the global record for the most fast food establishments visited in a 24-hour period.

Brian broke the previous record of 100 establishments visited, set by American YouTuber Airrack last year, by visiting 150.

Prior to it, the late Lynn “Lynja” Davis and Nick DiGiovanni, two popular personalities on TikTok, had owned the record.

While both of those record attempts happened in New York City, Brian’s happened in Abuja, the Nigerian capital.

Since there isn’t much public transport in the city, Brian had to walk the full distance to try this record. No private vehicles are allowed.

According to the reports, Brian opted for a more challenging and daunting experience by breaking the record in Abuja.

He covered a distance of more than 25 km (15 mi) on foot, starting at Chicken Republic in the Gwarinpa residential area and ending at Kilimanjaro, a fast food restaurant, in the city centre.

He set his start and end times at 5 p.m. and slept for nine hours between midnight and 9 a.m.

BusinessEx-youtube CEO, Susan Wojcicki, Dies At 56 by Supersdotng(op): 4:54pm On Aug 10, 2024
Former YouTube Chief Executive Officer, Susan Wojcicki, has died at the age of 56 after battling lung cancer, her husband announced on Friday.

Tech pioneer, who played an instrumental role in the rise of Google, is one of the most prominent women in Silicon Valley.

Wojcicki spent nearly two decades helping transform Google from the search engine startup that was launched in her garage to a global tech behemoth.

At YouTube, which Google acquired in 2006, Wojcicki helmed operations for nearly a decade, before stepping down last year to focus on her family, health and personal projects.

Her husband, Dennis Troper, wrote on Facebook that she had been living with lung cancer for the last two years. She and Troper had five children.

He wrote, “My beloved wife of 26 years and mother to our five children left us today.

“Susan was not just my best friend and partner in life, but a brilliant mind, a loving mother, and a dear friend to many. Her impact on our family and the world was immeasurable.”

Wojcicki was working at Intel when her friends Sergey Brin and Larry Page set up shop in the garage of her Menlo Park, California home in 1998.

A year later, she joined the company as its 16th employee and first marketing manager.

At Google, she played a role in creating image searches and worked on the acquisitions of YouTube and ad platform DoubleClick.

“She is as core to the history of Google as anyone, and it’s hard to imagine the world without her,” Sundar Pichai, Google’s chief executive, wrote on social media platform X.

“She was an incredible person, leader and friend who had a tremendous impact on the world, and I’m one of countless Googlers who is better for knowing her. We will miss her dearly.”

Wojcicki was named the CEO of YouTube in 2014. She introduced new forms of ads and helped steer its growth by launching a streaming television service as viewers increasingly turned to the internet for shows and films.

She also oversaw the company as it navigated concerns over child privacy, hate speech and the spread of misinformation, notably during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Wojcicki, who was four months pregnant when she joined Google, was a vocal advocate for paid parental leave, arguing in a 2014 opinion essay that it was good for businesses to offer generous policies.

TravelVehicles Burnt As Gas Explodes In Lagos Filling Station by Supersdotng(op): 5:41am On Aug 09, 2024
No fewer than nine people have sustained various injuries and many vehicles burnt after a gas explosion triggered a fire at the Mobil Filling Station near the Airport Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos State.

Our correspondent learnt that no casualties were reported at the filling station when the explosion occurred around 10:49 a.m. on Thursday, causing panic and fear among residents and business owners.

Speaking to our correspondent, an attendant who did not want his name in print for personal reasons, said the fire that emanated from the point spread immediately, affecting about nine vehicles parked at the premises.

He said, “I was attending to a customer when I heard a loud noise from the gas point and before I could imagine what was going on, the vehicles parked close to the gas truck were already gutted by fire.

“My colleagues and I, as well as customers who came to buy fuel quickly ran away. A gas truck was refilling the storage tank when it happened.”

An eyewitness who gave his name simply as Tunde said the extent of the damage was due to the fast spread of the fire.

He said, “The fire was so fast that no one could wait to move out of their vehicles from the station. Before the firefighters arrived, we tried our best to see how to reduce its spread but it was too much. It would have been fatal if the place was crowded due to fuel scarcity.”

A fruit seller named Adamu, who was in the area when the explosion occurred, told our correspondent that the fire started while a gas tanker was discharging its content into an above-ground storage tank, which then ignited.

“The fire started when the tanker was inside the station. The explosion was heavy. I saw yellow buses carrying at least three people to the hospital,” he stated.

Adamu’s account was confirmed by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Maintenance Agency, Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, on Thursday. He stated that their investigation revealed damage to the pipe of the eight-ton LPG gas cylinder while its content was being discharged.

He explained that the damage to the cylinder led to a rapid gas leak, which then ignited and caused the explosion. He added that further investigation would provide answers regarding the cause of the incident.

Oke-Osanyintolu noted that the explosion resulted in severe burns for two adult males, while around seven other people sustained minor injuries.

He added that about 10 vehicles, both commercial and private, were damaged, including parts of a nearby two-storey building.

He said, “All injured parties were promptly rescued and provided with immediate medical attention by the agency’s pre-hospital care team, in collaboration with LASAMBUS. They were later transferred to LASUTH for further treatment.

“The fire was successfully contained by the combined efforts of the agency’s LRT and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, preventing it from spreading to surrounding areas.

“The site is being cordoned off to ensure safety and to return the environment to normalcy as quickly as possible.”

Oke-Osanyintolu revealed that two LPG gas cylinders, one weighing about 12 tons and the other eight tons, had been secured at the premises to prevent further explosions.

Similarly, in response to the incident via its X.com handle, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service stated that its crew found a gas truck discharging its content into an above-ground storage tank when it ignited.

The fire service stated that the raging inferno engulfed “eight vehicles, including the tanker itself, and affected parts of the uppermost floor of a nearby two-storey building.”

The statement explained that the numbers of the victims could not be ascertained, adding that the injured victims had been taken to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja for treatment.

A similar explosion occurred in late April, injuring nine people, including a pregnant woman, in the Ajegunle-Apapa area of Lagos State.

The explosion was reportedly caused by a gas leak that ignited a high-tension cable, sparking a fire in the area, which is known for its gas cylinder trading activities.

BusinessTrends And Growth Of Cryptocurrency Adoption In Africa by Supersdotng(op): 9:36pm On Aug 07, 2024
Cryptocurrency is gradually becoming increasingly popular in Africa due to factors such as economic pressure, advancement in technology and the presence of the youth.

The socio-economic system of the continent is quite complex and poses both risks and rewards for the world’s crypto market. This article aims to discuss the trends and development of cryptocurrency usage in Africa, the factors that contributed to its increase and possible outcomes of this tendency.

The adoption of Cryptocurrencies in Africa
It has been seen in the recent past that the interest of the African continent in cryptocurrencies has been rapidly increasing with Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Ghana and other countries showing their keen interest. As revealed by Chainalysis, the African continent registered a 1,200% increase in crypto transactions in the period of July 2020 – June 2021, which ranks the African continent among the quickest-growing regions for cryptocurrencies. The availability of the Live Bitcoin Market Price and other information has also helped in attracting more and more people and users because users can check where to invest and how to do it at the moment.

Economic Necessity and Financial Inclusion
Another key factor that has been contributing to the rise of cryptocurrencies in Africa is the need for better financial solutions. Most African countries are characterized by Economic instability and high rates of inflation and devaluation of their currencies thus making the conventional financial systems untrustworthy. Some of them can be considered as an alternative to fiat money stores and a tool for protection from the depreciation of local currency.

Also, financial inclusion is still a major issue in Africa with many individuals and small businesses unbanked or underbanked. As of 2017, 43 percent of the adults in sub-Saharan Africa were financially included as stated by the World Bank. Cryptocurrencies, whose operations are free from the meddlesomeness of governmental and financial institutions, give a means of financial freedom to the unbanked population.

Technological advancement and Mobile Phone Penetration
Another factor that has boosted the use of cryptocurrencies in Africa is the fast growth of mobile phone usage. Since over 500 million people in the continent own a mobile phone, it is best placed to embrace digital financial services. Other advanced examples of such services include mobile money services such as M-Pesa in Kenya which have already paved the way for mobile financial transactions thus preparing the ground for cryptocurrencies.

Cryptocurrencies as a new form of mixed innovations provide a more efficient and secure means of transacting, remitting money and availing other financial services. The core of cryptocurrencies, blockchain, guarantees the anonymity of transactions, their confidentiality and reduced fees, which attracts the users of the African market.

Young and Tech-Savvy Population
As of now, Africa has the youngest population in the world with an average age of 19. This demographic is also more receptive to technology and tends to use new digital tools more frequently. Young people’s understanding of mobile gadgets and their business-like attitude have made them willing users of cryptocurrencies, for business, investments and savings, shopping and transfer of funds.

Government Policies and Regulation
Policies and regulations put in place by governments greatly influence the use of cryptocurrencies. Some African countries have warmly received cryptocurrencies while others have either hesitated or are completely against it. For instance, Nigeria had prohibited banks from transacting in cryptocurrencies in February 2021 but in October 2021, the country introduced its digital currency called eNaira.

On the other hand, countries such as South Africa and Kenya are more receptive to the regulatory authorities striving to establish policies that would accommodate innovation while protecting consumers. The South African Reserve Bank has set up a fintech unit to investigate the application of cryptocurrencies and the blockchain, at the same time, the Capital Markets Authority of Kenya is examining rules concerning digital currencies.

PoliticsNaira Deadline: Banks, Fuel Stations Reject Old Notes, Ignore S’court Order by Supersdotng(op): 3:21am On Feb 14, 2023
Some commercial banks and filling stations have stopped collecting the old naira notes from customers, contrary to the ruling of the Supreme Court restraining the Federal Government from enforcing the February 10 time limit earlier fixed by the apex bank for the currency swap.

Findings by The PUNCH on Monday indicated that the banks refused to accept the old N1,000, N500 and N200 notes from depositors and point-of-service agents who flooded the bank to lodge their cash.

Point of service operators and other bank customers whose old naira notes were rejected, panicked as bank officials, who said they were acting on the Central Bank of Nigeria’s directive, remained adamant.

Also, lawyers and litigants at high courts in Lagos State were unable to file their court processes using the old naira notes for payment.

As the naira crisis worsened,  the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, again met with the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), at the Presidential Villa on Monday.

Emefiele, who had met with the President about six times since the naira crisis started, failed to address correspondents as he reportedly left the villa through a side entrance.

The governments of Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara states on February 8 secured the order of the apex court extending the deadline beyond last Friday stipulated by the CBN for the use of the old notes.

A seven-member panel of the apex court, led by Justice John Okoro directed that the deadline be suspended till Wednesday when the proceedings would continue even as other states had applied to join the suit.

But our correspondent who visited the Mobil filling station at First Gate bus stop along Lagos-Badagry Expressway observed that the attendants refused to accept the old naira notes on Monday.

Checks also showed that banks in the Ikeja area of Lagos State refused to collect the old notes from customers.

Some frustrated and desperate customers were seen making frantic calls to their friends and loved ones intimating them of the development.

Speaking to The PUNCH on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the latest development, a staff member of First Bank Plc said that they were instructed not to collect the old naira notes.

Our correspondent noticed that only customers who had new naira notes were allowed into the banking hall.

Also in the Badagry area of Lagos, several bank customers and PoS agents who visited banks on Monday were shocked to learn that the banks were not accepting the old notes.

A resident, who identified himself simply as Mr Julius said the branches of Access Bank and UBA in the town refused to accept the old currencies from depositors.

Speaking to our correspondent on the phone, he said, “What is happening in his country? My wife visited UBA only to be informed that the bank was no longer accepting the old notes. Some PoS agents who visited Access Bank were also informed that the bank was no longer accepting the old notes based on a directive from the CBN. I thought the Supreme Court ruled that the notes are still legal tender.’’

Ogun banks

A Sterling Bank official said banks in the Magboro area of Ogun State had shut down as a result of the scarcity of cash.

Findings also indicate that some banks in Abuja, the capital city, have stopped accepting the old notes.

Officials who spoke to our correspondent said the policy was in line with a directive from the apex bank, noting that they did not know anything about the Supreme Court order.

At a Zenith bank branch located in the Central Business District, customers who had the old notes could not deposit them as officials blatantly refused to accept them.

A bank official stated, “We are not collecting old notes again, the deadline was on Friday. The memo I saw yesterday (Sunday) directed that we should not collect N1,000 and N500 old notes anymore.

“We even had to dispatch all our old currency on Friday to the Central Bank. We obey our regulators, not the Supreme Court.”

At the GtBank close to the Ministry of Transport, our correspondent got the same response.

“We are no longer receiving the old notes, we are working with the CBN and anything they say is what we do,’’ a female cashier declared.

When reminded about the seven-day grace period announced by the CBN governor, she noted, “We don’t know anything about it, the deadline has elapsed, and we are working with the CBN.”
However, a UBA branch at the CBD, Abuja, allowed some customers to deposit their old notes.

A customer confessed that he had to call a senior official before he was allowed to deposit his old naira notes.

But the GTB and First Bank branches in the Jabi district flatly refused to accept the old notes.

The same situation was observed in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital as many residents were frustrated by the banks and filling stations which refused to collect the old notes.

Ironically, some filling stations also rejected cash transfers even though they did not provide PoS as they insisted on the new notes.

A bank customer, Tope Adeitan, said, “It was a hell of a day for me today. I was at a bank along Bank Road to make withdrawals, but I was told I could only withdraw N5,000 across the counter, which I did because I had no option. I could not say whether the bank was collecting old notes or not, but I did not see a single note of the old N200, N500 and N1000 with anybody throughout my stay in the bank.

“And at a petrol station, I had thought I would use my ATM card or my bank app to pay for fuel only to be told I would have to pay with the new notes. So, I had to use the money I collected from the bank. The petrol dealers are just interested in selling the new naira notes to PoS operators for a quick profit. I am confused, will I have to cough out N150 or N200 on every N1,000 I collect through PoS?”

Another bank customer, who identified herself simply as Ayomide, said she had gone to a bank branch in the Okeyinmi area to make a withdrawal but was surprised by the sea of people at the ATM points and under the makeshift tents who wanted to carry out transactions in the bank, adding, “I had to return home empty-handed.

Customers lament

Some people said that the bank and some others in the state capital rejected their old notes. So, I can tell you the banks are not accepting the old notes. The Federal Government needs to speak to Nigerians on this issue. This suffering is unbearable,” she said.

In Kwara State, checks by our correspondent revealed that several banks, including UBA, FCMB and Access bank refused to take the old notes from their customers on Monday while the Zenith Bank, First Bank and UBA at Unity Road did not load money into their ATM points.

BusinessBanks Reject Old Naira Notes, Oil Marketers Threaten Strike by Supersdotng(op): 2:25am On Feb 12, 2023
Oil marketers have threatened to close their filling stations in protest against the rejection of old naira notes by deposit money banks across the country.

It was gathered that the banks issued circulars to some of the filling stations, urging them to stop accepting the old bills, as the DMBs would not collect them from marketers.

This followed the controversy about whether the Central Bank of Nigeria would phase out the old naira notes on February 10, as traders and other retailers also rejected the old currencies.

Punch gathered that many traders in the Federal Capital Territory, Ogun, and Lagos states had started rejecting the old N1,000, N500, and N200 notes. The traders claimed that old notes collected from sales made were rejected by banks on Friday morning.

The development left many residents stranded with many having to find means to do bank transfers.

Explaining why some of the stations were rejecting the notes, the Secretary of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Abuja-Suleja, Mohammed Shuaibu, said, “There is a serious crisis now; bankers are not helping the system.

“They are passing circulars around now, asking filling stations not to collect old naira notes again. The bankers are saying filling stations should stop collecting old notes. And now, many of these filling stations are closing because where they make their deposits, the old notes are no longer permitted there.

“If this should continue, it is going to lead to a serious problem. They are asking us not to accept old notes because they won’t collect them from us. This is what is happening. So many of our members are now closing sales.”

He said some of these banks closed operations for the day before the expected time, stressing that Nigerians should not blame the filling stations for not selling products whenever they noticed the closure of retail outlets.

When reminded about the directive by the Federal Government that marketers should use point-of-sales machines and accept bank transfers, the IPMAN official said his members were willing to comply.

“Some of these bank transfers are usually reversed, while at times, the transferred money will not get to the receiver. These are the problems we face with the network providers.

“However, we’ve been taking the pains to see that we help the government in alleviating the plights of the masses. But if these banks are now telling filling stations that they are not going to collect the old notes, it is going to be a problem.

“So, it is better for the authorities to call these banks to order immediately, otherwise, by the time we shut down, it is going to create a massive problem nationwide,” Shuaibu added.

The spokesperson for the Association of Corporate Affairs Managers of Banks, Rasheed Bolarinwa, promised to reveal the position of the banks when he was contacted but had yet to do so as of the time of filing the interview.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, has said the  Federal Government has taken bold actions to stop the ongoing petrol crises across the country.

Sylva, who gave the assurance after his tour of some selected petroleum dispensing outlets in Lagos on Friday, also assured Nigerians of massive distribution of the product.

“Fuel is everywhere, both in Lagos and Abuja. I visited many stations in Ikeja and on the mainland. From every indication, there are products everywhere and I want to assure you that the queues will disappear in a matter of days,” the News Agency of Nigeria quoted him as saying.
