Politics / Article 19 Of UN Charter & International Convenant On Civil And Political Right by superstar1(m): 7:30pm On Jun 07, 2021
In exercising our right of freedom of speech, we are always quick to cite Article 19 of the UN Charter, forgetting that each right comes with a corresponding responsibility and limitations as clearly stated in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights of 16 December 1966, which became enforceable on 23 March 1976.

In the case of Article 19, the Right goes thus:

1. Everyone shall have the right to hold opinions without interference.

2. Everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression; this right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of his choice.

However, dubious people always hoodwink people with only the Right while deliberately shying away from the Responsibility.

What does the Responsibility of Article 19 says? It goes this in clause 3 as:

3. The exercise of the rights provided for in paragraph 2 of this article carries with it special duties and responsibilities. It may therefore be subject to certain restrictions, but these shall only be such as are provided by law and are necessary:

(a) For respect of the rights or reputations of others;

(b) For the protection of national security or of public order (ordre public), or of public health or morals.

In the suspension of Twitter, 3b was evoked by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

It gets more interesting when you look at Article 20 which was incessantly flouted on Twitter and which gave the Govt every reason to evoke 3b.

What does Article 20 says? It goes thus:

1. Any propaganda for war shall be prohibited by law.

2. Any advocacy of national, racial or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence shall be prohibited by law.

TwitterNG was littered with all sorts of posts from irresponsible users calling for violence against the State, that is undeniable by objective minds.

Twitter and Jack as the owner of the platform have the right to their platform and most importantly they even have the responsibility to ensure the Articles and laws of sovereignties where their platform
is operational are not flouted. It is in the best interest of humanity for Twitter or any responsible Social Media not only to uphold the Right but also live up to the expected responsibility of the Charter.

Federal Govt has a duty to protect the sovereignty of the nation and ensuring the responsibility of the Charter of the UN are enforced, after granting the Rights of the Charter, especially when Article 20 was being flouted repeatedly by users of the Twitter platform with the owner not taking responsibility to put up any reasonable mechanism in place to timely nip the flouting in the bud.

In the face of the repeated flouting of Article 20, it was only a matter of time for Federal Govt to evoke 3b as prescribed by the UN and being an international covenant which most nations are signatories to.

Apart from this, the Supreme Court of Nigeria ruling in the case of the FGN vs Asari Dokubo (2006) as already established the fact that National Security supersedes Freedom and Rights. When the issue of National Security comes in, all rights and freedoms take the back burner.

Perhaps, if some of the users of the platform had been more circumvent and responsible in the usage of the platform to exercise their freedom and right while being conscious of the responsibility it behoves on them wit the corresponding limitation of the Articles they are always quick to cite, maybe Twitter may not have been suspended.

Freedom of speech to threaten some else with death? Is that what freedom of speech is? To rally people to attack the systems that guarantee everybody freedom of expression or to vote is free speech??

U need to understand what free speech entails. It shouldn't attack other people's fundamentals rights. Government must respect people rights. Issues should be addressed inline with the constitution which includes protests and legal action.

Please show me the threat and the person that was threatened.

Was trump not out of line like Buhari? Why do u think all social media banned trump not just Twitter? Tho i supported Trump initially he was aggravating the election situation unnecessarily not using the right channels or accepting the electoral systems. If there were compromises as suspected he should have followed the right processes not inciting arnachy.

Why should Trump be banned when there is Freedom of Speech?

Or freedom of speech only exists when it suits Jack and cease to exist when it also suits him, depending on which side of the bed he woke up from?

The worst is that they were all silent when the US BANNED Tiktok just last year because they were considered a threat to their national security. Insisting they either leave or be purchased by a US company.

They couldn't find their tongue for that one.

The same way they banned Huawei? Where was Huawei’s right when they were doing that in the name of the national security exigencies?

I’m even seeing this twitter banned as a fight against southerners. Because there is a wider margin between south and north when it’s comes to the use of twitter and social media generally.

That’s why their northern youths are not so bothered about it

Politics / FG Gives Condition To Lift Ban On Twitter by superstar1(m): 1:43pm On Jun 07, 2021
The federal government has given a condition to lift its indefinite suspension of Twitter in Nigeria.

Geoffrey Onyeama, minister of foreign affairs, said at a meeting with some envoys that Twitter’s operations in Nigeria will be restored only if the platform can be used “responsibly.”

Asked when the ban will be lifted, Onyeama said there is no definite timeline for that, but added: “The condition would be responsible use of the social media and that really has to be it.”

“We are not saying that Twitter is threatening the country or any such thing; why we have taken this measure is to stop them to be used as platforms for destabilisation and facilitation of criminality or encouragement of criminalities,” he also said.

Strategic partnership you say?

What do you bring to the table? Oil and gas? Oh! Boko Haram and ISWAP?
You are wobbling badly a a country at the moment and everyone around the world knows except you.. Imagine Chad fighting to safeguard your borders... If these western countries desperately want to blow up this country, they can achieve that result in a year because of your stoopid president who has destroyed the country with his rare type of parochialism and nepotism.

All they need to do is to support the powerful figures pushing for the country's break up, since these forces seem to have wide support within their different bases! Nigerias much vaunted international/regional clout was based on her huge population and her massive Oil and gas deposits. Nothing else! We are technically backwards and not optimally productive, so? Now the population is highly disenchanted because of the actions of a rudderless regime and there are proven alternative energy sources for the west. You are a sitting duck, bro...

You have to realize that your bargaining chips here has been whittled down seriously because of your present predicaments as a country...

I am laughing in Mandarin. You need to take up a course in International Relation, Politics and Diplomacy. Maybe when you do, you will have a better understanding.

For now, all what you typed holds no ground!
