Lassa fever is killing people.

True playtheblues, the multimammate was what came to my mind first. But what about the male gender of the host rodent? Do they have breasts as well?

Few minutes ago, While drinking water before I left a garden somewhere in Garki Abuja‎ where I just had lunch. I saw 3 young men holding a huge live rat they just caught in the garden. Out of curiosity, I asked them if they were aware of Lassa fever and to my greatest surprise they knew nothing of such. From a distance, I watched them slaughter the rat, smoke it and proceeded into the kitchen where the food I ate came from. 
This is a clear evidence that the publicity and enlightenment campaign given to the disease is below sufficient. I'm starting to believe what a caller on radio said some days back; that unlike Ebola, the poor are more vulnerable to Lassa fever hence the government won't give it adequate attention.‎

Meanwhile, I just had lunch in this garden, and starting to get worried if I may have contacted the disease, and I'm picking up my daughter from school in another 2 hours. Please guys can one get tested for Lassa fever like you get tested for HIV‎

ABUJA— Police in Abuja are investigating the suspected murder of a female lawyer, Mrs. Ijeoma Micah, whose lifeless body was found mutilated, yesterday, in her chambers in the highbrow Maitama area of Abuja.
Ijeoma, the owner of Micah and Micah Chambers, was found dead in her office three days after she was said to have gone missing. 
Her husband, who it was learnt, arrived from London on Sunday morning, rushed to her office, as it was gathered that he had not heard from her for three days, only to discover her lifeless body. 
He reported the matter to Area Command of the police in Maitama.
Contacted on the development, Commissioner of Police FCT, Femi Ogunbayode, said that from investigations, it was discovered that some men had called Ijeoma to her office for some business, which she went for and afterwards, nothing was heard from her.     
Ogunbayode told Vanguard that as a result of the killing, a security detail that was attached to Ifeoma was arrested and was being interrogated for alleged complicity. 
He said that since the security detail did not report the case to the police until her husband came back from abroad and discovered her body, he was therefore a suspect.
He added that the Forensic Investigation Unit at the FCT Command was already at the office, where she was allegedly killed and had commenced investigation into the matter.
Sympathisers in the area said that the Ifeoma’s husband broke the door of her office and on seeing the lifeless body of his wife, almost killed himself while crying.

The sad thing is that most Nigerians don't appreciate creative and appealing branding, I have found myself in situations where a customer feels I'm being pricy for a design saying "no be odinari lowgow?".

The look on this child's face saddens the heart; a frightened, shocked, traumatized, and innocent look. It makes me wonder what is left of the human race?
I think its wise we beef up security at places where people converge accross the country. And our security outfits should step up their activities because of copy-cat attacks. And Nigerians should not hesitate to whistle-blow any suspicious development. God be with us all and may the souls of the departed rest in peace. Amen.

Three floors of the Westgate mall have collapsed in the final stages of its hostage siege, burying an unknown number of people, including several of the attackers, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has disclosed in a televised speech to the nation.

“The operation is now over,” he said. “As I had vowed earlier, we have ashamed and defeated our attackers.”

Mr. Kenyatta did not explain how the three floors of the mall collapsed, although explosions have been audible in the mall for several days and a huge fire has been burning since Monday.

Nor did he explain the fate of the hostages, believed to number at least 30 at the beginning of the siege. It was unclear whether some of the hostages may be buried in the rubble.

The death toll so far includes 61 civilians, six security officers, and five attackers who were shot dead, along with “several” others who were trapped in the rubble of the mall collapse, Mr. Kenyatta said in the speech on Tuesday.

But the toll is expected to rise sharply in the days to come as bodies are recovered.

Mr. Kenyatta announced three days of national mourning for the victims of the prolonged four-day Westgate siege, which appeared to be largely finished on Tuesday, although security forces were still combing the building for explosives and bodies.

Mr. Kenyatta said 11 suspects were in custody, but this appeared to include 10 people who were detained and questioned at Nairobi’s international airport as they attempted to leave the country. Their role in the Westgate attack, if any, is unclear.

There are a total of 240 dead and injured from the mall siege so far, Mr. Kenyatta said, apparently including 175 people whose injuries were already reported. But the Kenyan Red Cross has registered more than 50 missing people, and local morgues are preparing to receive up to 60 additional bodies, in addition to those already listed as dead, news agencies say.

About 10 to 15 attackers, believed to be from the Somalia-based Islamist radical militia al-Shabab, stormed into the mall on Saturday with guns blazing, shooting dozens of people. The attackers were a “multinational” group, Kenyan officials say.

In his speech, Mr. Kenyatta acknowledged that some of the attackers may have been U.S. or British citizens, but he said forensic experts are still gathering evidence.

His Foreign Minister, Amina Mohamed, had earlier told a U.S. television network that the attackers included “two or three” Americans and a British woman. She hinted that the woman may have been the notorious “white widow” – British citizen Samantha Lewthwaite, 29-year-old widow of London subway suicide bomber Jermaine Lindsay, who is believed to have entered Kenya on a false South African passport. But there is no firm evidence of her involvement, and al-Shabab has denied that any women were involved in the attack.

Most of Mr. Kenyatta’s speech to the nation was a fervent defence of Kenya’s handling of the crisis. “Kenya has stared down evil and triumphed,” he said. “As a nation, our head is bloodied, but unbowed. The criminals found us unafraid, as we ever shall be. We cannot be conquered.”

Kenya has defeated “the monster of terrorism,” he said. “These cowards will meet justice, as will their accomplices and patrons, wherever they are.”

He did not discuss, however, any plans for boosting security to prevent a repeat of the siege. In parliamentary debates on Tuesday, many MPs complained about security lapses and failures by Kenya’s police and intelligence agencies. One MP said the international community was more aware of security threats in Nairobi than the national authorities. Others complained of corruption and incompetence among the police and immigration authorities.

Kenyan authorities have been insisting since Sunday that the hostage siege was almost over. They said that their soldiers are in full control of the Westgate mall and are merely “mopping up” and checking for explosives. But its claims were repeatedly contradicted by evidence of persistent fighting, including a huge blaze at the mall that was still burning on Tuesday afternoon, 24 hours after it began. For much of the day, gunfire and explosions continued to erupt.

Meanwhile, the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Fatou Bensouda, said on Tuesday that she is ready to work with Kenyan and international authorities to ensure that the Westgate attackers are “brought to justice.”

Kenya’s parliament has voted to withdraw from the international court in the wake of the court’s decision to put Kenya’s president and deputy president on trial for alleged crimes against humanity. But the ICC is eager to show that it will not ignore Kenyan injustices, despite the parliamentary vote.

In a separate decision, the court refused to postpone Mr. Kenyatta’s trial. He had sought to delay the trial until January, but the court ruled that the trial should go ahead as scheduled on Nov. 12.

Considering the fact that Nigeria is an active 'player' in African Peace Keeping missions, one begins to wonder if our security operatives are prepared for the kind of attack kenya just witnessed. I think its high time we start educating each other on "Things to do and not to do when you find yourself in a terror situation".

Nairobi, Kenya (CNN) - Kenyan forces assaulted terrorists in Nairobi's Westgate Shopping Mall on Monday afternoon, killing two and claiming to take control of all floors of the building despite sporadic gunfire and the continued presence of the attackers inside.

It was unclear if any hostages remained inside the building, but authorities expect the number to be "very, very minimal," if any remain, Interior Minister Joseph Ole Lenku said at a news briefing.

Most had already been evacuated, he said Monday, the third day of the siege.

The Kenya Red Cross said that 62 people had died since the siege began Saturday. The agency had previously reported 69 deaths. Some bodies been counted twice, it said on Twitter.

Dark smoke that rose from the building after Monday's assault was from fires set by the gunmen to distract forces from the assault, Lenku said.

Terrorists appear to be on the run inside the mall, which Lenku said had been sealed off to prevent their escape.

"We are in charge of the situation, our people are safe," he said.

Before the assault, terrorists from the Somalia-based Al-Shabaab group were believed to have about 10 hostages on one level of the mall, security officials said.
