Religion / ‘279-year-old’ Nigerian - is God able to , I am whom i am , true or false by surued: 9:50am On Dec 20, 2009
Written by Habeeb I. Pindiga
Saturday, 19 December 2009 23:07  sunday Trust

I dont believed the man knows when he was born, do you thinks is true or false, read on

Alh.Abdul karim
A 279-year-old man with a rather sharp recollection of events and spiritual healing powers. This was what residents woke up to find among them in early September at Tudun Wada, a suburb of Pindiga, Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State. At least this was what the slender, fair-skinned, blind Alhaji Abdulkarim (the only name he provided) told them—and most people there believe him.

He came alone, with a small sack containing bags of medicinal trees, apparently to stay for a few days. But after dazzling the people in the area with history and stories, as well as claims of powers to heal, Abdulkarim settled there. He bought and moved into a three-room mud house and established a base for practising sorcery. He also brought in his wife.

Abdulkarim was invited by locals for a specific purpose: to identify the specific cause of perennial water scarcity in the area and also to help set up a weekly market that could attract traders from all over the region. He has not done any of those yet, for no clear reason.

Yet, he won the confidence of the people. He claimed to have  lived with octogenarians, who died several decades ago, when they were toddlers. He told of how Tudun Wada itself was founded over a century ago by people of Kano origin. He also related the history of Pindiga, and claimed to have stayed there during the reign of Sarki Hassan, who ruled more than a hundred years ago.

Soon, Alhaji Abdulkarim started giving herbal medicine and rendering ‘spiritual healing’ to people. He charges N50 or N100 for his services, and at first attracted customers from neighbouring towns and villages. Now, clients troop from neighboring Borno and Bauchi states to Pindiga to see this mystery man and, many of them, to receive ‘cure’.

By his own rather disjointed, incredible account of his life, Alhaji Abdulkarim was born 279 years ago at Mayafa in present-day Zamfara State. He grew up at Jada, near Alkaleri in Bauchi State, and later moved to Timbuktu in Mali from where he went to Saudi Arabia and stayed for many decades. He returned to Nigeria around the time when Head of State General Murtala Mohammed was assassinated. Since then, he had stayed in a number of places: Garin Dadi, near Gombi, Adamawa State; Jada, Bauchi State; across several villages in Gombe State; and Kuran Mota, near Futuk, Bauchi State, from where he moved to Pindiga. He had siblings, all of them dead now, one having lived 303 years old. He also married several women over time, all but one are dead, and none had a child for him.

‘I will soon be 280 years old’

I walk into the courtyard of Abdulkarim’s mud house, led by a local. Around a dozen sheep and goats are tied to stakes at a corner, and some chicken are moving around. Apparently, these animals were brought for sacrifice by people seeking spiritual help.

I step into his dimly-lit room that reeks of concoctions. He appears a normal, Hausa old man, sitting on a tattered mat, dressed in traditional jumper and trousers with a not-so-matching cap. He has grey-haired moustache and beard, but the hair on his head is more of black than grey. As he throws a piece of kola into his mouth, I can see that he has a number of teeth still hanging onto the gums. He has a fully wrinkled face, yet he did not look to me like he is more than 90 years old.

But for the small sacks of herbs behind him, the room is virtually empty.

“I will be 280 years old by next year,” he confidently tells me.

FROM THE FOLLOWING REPORT OUR MALLAM IS IN FOR A LONG TERM OR WANT THE NEW OWNER TO CARRY CBN SIGNATURE FOR ANOTHER 18MONTH

PUNCH TODAY

The chief executive officers and executive directors appointed in August and October by the Central Bank of Nigeria to run the eight rescued banks will serve for two years in the first instance.

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Lamido Sanusi, who announced this after the Bankers‘ Committee‘s national retreat in Enugu on Sunday, added that the owners of the banks could decide if they wanted the CEOs to continue or not after the banks might have been recapitalised.

The bank chiefs are Mr. Lai Alabi of Intercontinental bank; Mr. John Aboh of Oceanic bank; Mrs. Funke Osibodu of Union Bank; Mrs. Suzame Iroche of Finbank, and Mr. Nebolisu Arah of Afribank.

Others are, Mr. Cyril Chukwumma of BankPHB; Mrs. Sola Ayodele of Spring Bank and Mr. Gbolahan Folayan of Equitorial Trust Bank.

Sanusi stressed that the CBN had a well-laid out process for recapitalisation, saying that mergers, acquisitions and capital market activities were being encouraged to ”move the banks to the next level.”

He said that the over N1.5tn losses posted by six of the rescued banks last week was not surprising but insisted that the banks were not worse off as a result of the huge write-offs.

As at today, loan losses arising from provisioning for toxic assets in the banking system has hit N1.83bn.

He said, ”Citibank, the American and British banks, are still taking further losses after the initial losses declared. If the market depreciates and you are marking to market, every time the market depreciates, you make additional losses.

“Having deterioration in a period of sectoral downturn is not strange or unique to Nigeria. For most of the banks we intervened in, there were governance issues, there were fraud and corruption issues.

”As we discovered those issues, we had to take all the steps to ensure that if money has been taken out, you have to provide for it. As for the other banks, I will assure you that if we had found any fraud or corporate governance issues, we would have removed the CEOs.

“So, the fact that they are there means that we have confidence in the way they have been managing the banks.”

The CBN governor, however, said he could not confirm whether the December common year-end results for the banks would be better than the third quarter results, but added that the figures would not be substantially different from those declared in September for most of the institutions.

”Will December figures be better than September figures? It depends. Some banks took a very conservative position in September, cleaned out, so that they can have an upside by December. I imagine some will go up, some will go down, but I don‘t think December figures will be substantially different from September figures for most of the institutions,” he said.

The CBN governor stressed that government was in a position to keep the banks afloat, pointing out that every country that had been confronted with a banking crisis had handled it with fiscal support. He said that the Nigerian government had the fiscal flexibility to continue to support the banking system.

He said, ”We are running a fiscal stimulus. N1tn is less than two per cent of Gross Domestic Product. In terms of fiscal flexibility and the ability of the government to continue to support the financial system, there is no lack of fiscal flexibility at all. Therefore, the problem looks big, but the solution is nowhere beyond the capabilities of the government.”

On whether the CBN under-estimated the rot in the banking sector when it injected N620bn into the troubled banks, the CBN governor explained that the funds were not to cover the losses of the banks, but were believed to be sufficient to ensure that the banks would continue in business and meet their obligations to depositors and creditors.

He said, “So far, the funds have achieved results. No bank has not met its obligations to customers; no bank has run to the CBN for money. And we will also be ready to provide liquidity support in foreign currency obligations if the need arises. But for naira obligations, we put in all that was required to meet their obligations.”

Sanusi said by telling the banks to publish their accounts, investors, shareholders and analysts would have an idea of the true financial position of Nigerian banks, adding that the banks were not in anyway worse than before because of the poor figures published.

He added, ”We have made a lot of progress in terms of the resolution of the situation of the banks. We have the AMC Bill with the National Assembly. Once that bill is approved, it will serve as a vehicle of resolution. Once toxic assets are purchased, that is recovery of capital.”

The Group Managing Director of Intercontinental Bank Plc, Mr. Lai Alabi, said the bank had made full provisions for the toxic assets that reflected the bad decision made by the previous management of the bank and that ”we are looking towards a return to profitability going forward.”

Speaking in the same vein, Group Managing Director of Oceanic Bank Plc, Mr. John Aboh, said the bank had also made full provisions for toxic assets as at September 30, 2009, adding that further provisions could be made if some accounts went bad.

He said, however, that the bank had made significant recovery of bad debts and the management anticipated a return to profitability by the first quarter of 2010.

Aboh, however, insisted that the value of the institution was a function of earning capacity, which he said had not been depleted in spite of the recent developments.

Meanwhile, the Bankers‘ Committee after their retreat agreed with the CBN to embark on a regulator-led collaborative process to enable operators within the financial system to partner with government at the federal and state levels to transform the Nigerian economy.

The Bankers‘ Committee said in a communiqué read at the end of the retreat that the CBN governor had ”clearly articulated his vision for a Nigerian financial sector that plays a dual role of enabler as well as engine of real sector growth.”

The bankers identified three key sectors - power, transportation and agriculture - where the funding need was most urgent in the quest for the nation‘s development.

Funding to these sectors, according to the bankers, will be boosted for sustainable growth with the necessary support of government.

Sanusi also said Nigerian banks were now committed more than ever before to growth-inducing projects, adding that ”the current structure of lending to the Nigerian economy is such that the bulk of aggregate credit is channeled mainly to financial market operators and traders to the neglect of key aspects of the real economy.”
