Proper Hygiene in respect to their feeding equipments, drinking equipments, housing (cages). Poultry farming is not for a lazy man or woman because for the more lazy the farmer is the more expose the birds are to diseases.
Many people don't see poultry hygiene as something important because they are more focus on the poultry productivity forgetting that if the birds are not well kept they won't be productive.
Poultry get dirty through different means. Some of them are:
Through dust
Through feeding (spillage)
Through water leakage
Through birds behavior (some birds are wild)
Insects and rodents

Chickens have pain receptors that give them the ability to feel pain and distress. Put yourself in the shoes, certainly chicken don't have their brain in their bum, they do have a little bit of the brain at the top of their neck, and lots of nerves in their spinal cord which respond to feelings in the skin, and make the muscles move – even when their head has been chopped off!

Treat them right that's when they can be productive
