STANDARD BIOSECRITY MEASURES As a farmer, there are certain biosecurity that must be observed regularly if maximum productivity and less mortality rate is to be recorded in the journey of the poultry farm business. These include the following; 1. Remove litter, empty drinkers and clean dry with all visible dirt. 2. Wash down with a cleansing agent and allow for enough contact time (20 minutes) and clean drinker lines (and flush them afterwards). 3. Rinse and let dry. 4. Disinfect ( by spray or foam; foaming will visualize better where the product has been applied and stays longer on vertical surfaces and ceilings, allowing for a longer residual action). 5. Install new litter, re-install and fill the feeders and drinkers. 6. Do a terminal disinfection by thermo (thermo) fogging. Do a continuous disinfection of trucks (wheel dips), people (hand hygiene, foot dips) and drinking water. 7. I some countries, like the USA, the reality is far away from this concept and Litter is used time and time again, sometimes called “dirt floors”. But then, again, the University of Georgia writes, “Because most US broiler houses have dirt floors, clostridium perfringens has the opportunity to flourish and cause physiological problems to the birds, high flock mortality rate and financial losses for the farmer and the poultry company.” 8. A clean out and disinfection of the feed silos is equally advised. 9. With foot dips, regular placement of the disinfectant of the disinfectant is important and washing of the boots friends. 5 WAYS TO KNOW A GOOD LAYING BIRD The aim of every business is increased productivity. In egg production, a good laying bird is a major factor in the success of the business, provided other resources surrounding the business are well managed and in good condition. The success of a poultry business, especially egg production, depends on many factors; but the prominent factor is the bird itself. The type of birds reared should be ones with good production potential. Before choosing any bird, it is imperative you study the bird decisively to ensure it suits and meets the production requirements. At times, an unproductive laying bird is very difficult to identify but with further scientific research, some features have been noticed and recommended for farmers. Such features should be traced and present in birds. They are; 1. A bright red comb and wattle The comb and wattle are the superficial parts of the laying birds. These two parts indicate the health status of poultry birds. Before any disease condition manifests, the clinical signs are first noticed on the comb and wattle. A good laying bird has a bright red comb and wattle; this shows that the bird is in a good condition, and can produce optimally. A laying bird with a pale or dark comb and wattle is not a in a good condition, such birds have poor production potential. When buying your point of lay birds, opt for birds with bright red comb and wattle. 2. Alert eyes One of the important parts of a laying bird is the eye. The eyes of a good laying bird are always alert and not depressed. Laying birds with weepy and dull eye are not good for egg production; they are sick birds that require medical attention. Rearing such birds will greatly increase the cost of production as the cost of medication and utilized feeds accrue. Go for laying birds with bright and alerted eyes. 3. The cloaca must be moist The cloaca is the posterior orifice or outlet that allows the removal of digestive wastes and egg after it is completely formed. This part must always be moist and not dry; if it is dry, it means the bird is not in good condition. Take the pain to examine this part to ensure it’s moist before purchasing the birds. 4. The width between the pelvic bone should measure about 3-4 fingers The pelvic bone is the bone around the cloaca, place your fingers around this area to measure it. If it accommodates more than two fingers; the bird is a good laying bird, but if it accommodates just two fingers, the bird is not good. Try to check this out before purchasing the birds. 5. The beak and claws should be bleached This is another feature you should look out for in your birds. The beaks and claws should be bleached. This should as well be considered and observed in any earmarked laying birds. Conclusion These are the features that determine the productivity of your laying bird. If these features are matched, the birds will produce up to their genetic potential. These are naturally modified features of a laying bird to achieve high productivity, try to observe all these before stocking your point of lay birds.
