As far as i am concern, all that he's experiencing is an attack,

(1) we have very few reliable anti-virus softwares. note that the virus or worm on your system are deadlier than you think and this is wat they consider INTRO.
(2) backing up your files is a fantastic move but have you thought of it that those files are already infected and backin them up could be you "keeping a copy of a virus that is presently in your system.
And when you later format your hard drive, you'll put back those files- i assume.
then you'll put the virus back on your system

i'm not trying to contradict what you've said so far, but based on research we've discovered that 90-95% of the anti-virus softwares we have are not capable of removing recently discovered worms & viruses,
