I don't understand this amapiano stuff, is it the beat or the style of music?

Amapiano is a combination of both the beat and the style . It’s conjunctive .

However our adaptation over here is more of the best , infusing the heavy percussions and strings in our instrumentals .

Mavin Star and “ Dumebi “Crooner , Divine Ikubor aka Rema tweeted on the 26th of November , 2021 via his official twitter account @heisrema. In the series of tweets , he accused Renowned Nigerian Dj, Dj Neptune of tampering with his intellectual property and releasing his art without his consent .

The art in question is the Andre vibez produced “ For You “ musical work , which DjNeptune included in his newly released “ Greatness 2.0” album.

Rema also stated that despite the fact that the song was produced by A Mavin Records Affiliate Producer, Andre Vibez, he wasn’t paid , neither did he sign any legal document not consented to the song release before same was included in Dj Neptune ‘s new album “ Greatness 2.0” . The producer of the Track in dispute is Mavins Producer,Andre Vibez. He also produced Feelings for Ladipoe featuring Buju and Too correct for Crayon featuring Rema .

FIVE MAJOR LESSONS THAT CREATIVES AND MUSIC BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS SHOULD LEARN FROM THE EVENT

1. As a Music Artiste with verses and vocal performances on a song , you have a share of the copyright on the composition and sound recording aspects of the song. As such , you or the label you have assigned or license these rights to, have a say in whatever is done with your contributions to the song and nothing should be done to same without your consent .

2. Like Rema Stated , Artistes must ensure they sign legal documents to protect the intellectual property inherent in their creative works . In the case of a song you featured in , split sheets must be signed .Sampling Clearance, image release and other related documents must also be signed as the circumstances may dictate .

3. Creatives must ensure they do proper background check on any work that is being assigned or licensed to them , to ensure that no copyright has been infringed upon before such work is release . This is where due diligence comes in , all neccesary documents should be cross checked and all parties involved must be duly communicated.

4. Creatives must ensure they speak out once they observed their Intellectual Property rights is infringed upon or likely to be infringed upon. However , it is important that consultation is done with their management or team so as to get hold of the proper facts before claiming their intellectual property rights have been infringed upon

5. Get an Intellectual Property/ Entertainment Lawyer on your side . You cant fight for Your Rights if you don’t even know these Rights . To avoid exploitation and After effect approach , Get a lawyer involved in all your contractual dealings and in all aspects of your creative career.

We do hope the dispute is resolved as soon as possible as we await the response from Dj Neptune ‘s Management likewise Andre Vibez , the music producer

A lot of Good Songs have failed to achieve success because of minor mistakes like Errors in their Meta Data or absence of same .Artistes are also losing out on huge chunks of royalties due to this . A lot of Recording Artistes overlook this very important aspect of their songs and bear heavy consequences for it later .

We will quickly examine what meta Data is , Types of Meta Data , The importance of Meta Data and salient features that should be in your song’s meta data.

What is Meta Data ?

Meta Data as it pertains to Music can simply be defined as information about your song that is available stored and made available digitally worldwide . Meta Data is simply all the IMPORTANT information/data about your Song/Songs .

So when you hear the word “ Meta Data “ as an artiste or songwriter or creative involved in Music, the first question that should come to mind is“ All the important and basic information an investor or listener should Know about my songs !!

Types of Meta Data

There are Three Major Types of Meta Data Every Song should Possess

1) Descriptive Meta Data
2) Ownership/ Performing Rights Meta Data
3) Recommendation Meta Data.

We will examine each of the types briefly

The first Type of Meta Data is Descriptive Meta Data

Descriptive meta tags are related to the descriptive text tags of a song like song title , Release date , Performing artiste . genre etc

Every time someone needs to organize or present the music in some way, descriptive metadata is used.Every time someone needs to organize, sort, or present the music in some way, descriptive metadata is used. For example, its used to identify the song on the radio or to build an artist page on Spotify, etc.

The Second Type of Meta Data is Ownership/Performing Rights Meta Data .

This Meta Data deals with the creative persons involved in the song . The Writer , performing artiste , Producer, Engineers and other persons involved in the song are accounted for in this meta data .Ownership meta data is made to ensure everyone involved in the song creation process gets appropriate credit and is duly remunerated .

It is especially important to determine the share of royalties that gets to each creative involved in a song

The third type of meta data is Recommendation Meta Tags.

Recommendation Meta Tags – like the name implies are recommendations or addendums that helps listeners find your music on digital platforms .Genre , Sub Genres , Song Mood , Scores, Comments and other algorithms used ..

Why is Meta Data Important to Your songs and Career

1. Metadata ensures your singles and releases are ready for distribution on digital platforms

2. Meta Data ensures you get all the royalties you are entitled to from streaming platforms . Without proper meta data …You are losing out on a chunk of royalties entitled to you.

3. Meta Data allows your songs to be easily discovered by algorithms on music platforms . The platforms picks up this data to bring your songs before the interested audience .

4. Meta Data allows potential collaborators & investors to find the correct information about you & contact you for potential collaborations and investments.

5. Meta Data ensures you are rightly attributed as the owner of your songs on online platforms and that another brand or entity is not enjoying the moral rights off your creative work

What should be contained in your Meta Data ?

This is another salient thing all artistes should note and the majority of errors in meta data is because artistes/labels do not add the proper tags .

We will examine the top tags that should be in your meta data

1) Artiste Name : The Legal name of the artiste and Stage name should be contained in here e.g Ayomide Fashakin (DBruce ) . This tag is very important and should be in this order (N) (SN) to aid discovery and royalties sharing.

It’s also important not to combine artist names when you feature an artiste . If you have someone else on the song, please make use of the “ featuring “ tag in the meta data to indicate two different artistes e.g Peruzzi ft Davido instead of Peruzzi Davido or Peruzzi and Davido .

2) Featured Artiste
– if any , Their name and their stage names should be in the meta data .

3) Track Title – Endeavor to name the track on the meta data as it appears on the album and all other merchandise or platforms . Don’t add apostrophe or symbols that are not the actual track title e.g Joro should Joro and not “ JORO” on your meta data .

4) Track No – The track no on your album , EP or compilation . Whether it’s track 4 or 5 or 6 .

5) Genre – what’s the genre of your Song ? . This is very important forplaylists and DSP algorithms. Don’t tag an Afrobeats track under hip hop and don’t tag RnB track under Reggae .Know your genre of music . And don’t tag under weird music genres of your own .

We know you are the creator of emoafrobeat , ReggaeBlues and Afroragga but please for the sake of your meta data and your Song success , tag your music under the available , recognized and appropriate genres of music we have in this current dispensation .

6) Composer – The people involved in writing the lyrics of the song . They must be duly credited . Full name and stage /Song writing name .

7) Music Producer – The Music producer (s) of the song must be duly credited in the meta data . Full name and stage name too.

8 ) Explicit Content : indicate whether the track contains explicit content that should not be heard by kids or radio censored lines .

9) Lyrics Language – The language of the lyrics used on the song . English , Yoruba , French etc . If two or more languages are used , state same .

10) Lyrics publisher : The music publisher representing the lyricist/lyrics contributor .

11) Composition Owner: The owner of the composition rights

12) Year of Release: The year the track was released and made available for the public

13) Master Recording Owner: the owner of the sound recording

14) BPM : Beats per minute to determine the tempo of the song .

15) Contact Info : Indicate your social media handles so fans and potential record labels or collaborators can follow up and contact you if need be

16) Artwork : Please make use of a professional and well designed artwork. Your artwork is your number one selling point . Make sure the artwork contains your artiste name , song Title and social media handles. You may add record producer , label name and any other details you deem fit .

17) Lyrics : Ensure the correctly written lyrics to your song are provided in your meta data. This can help when users are trying to find your songs online or when you are trying to get on playlists .

18) ISRC Code — is a fixed point of reference when the recording is used across different services, across borders, or under different licensing deals”. It is also known as the International Standard Recording Code and is assigned to a track that is available for commercial release .

19) ISWC code– stands for International Standard Work Code. This code is assigned to the composition in the sound recordings and music video recordings I.e the music and lyrics. It is usually assigned upon registration to members by Performance rights Society .

20) Groupings – This pertains to the ownership of rights on the song and the percentage due to each individual owner .

Tips to Maximizing Meta Data for Artiste Growth

Here are some tip to maximize the use of meta data for your career growth and to ensure that your metadata doesn’t cause any issues with your release and in getting your royalties .

1. Triple-check your spelling and formatting

Make sure to always spell your track and artist names correctly and exactly the same way each time.Your spelling and formatting must be consistent on every song you release . Don’t put “ AdeyLOVA” as artiste on one song and put “ Adeylova” as artiste on another song . Ensure you are consistent with the format and style of artiste name you use .

Even if you need to enter names multiple times, never abbreviate them or add extra punctuation.

It’s also important not to combine artist names when you feature an artiste . If you have someone else on the song, please make use of the “ featuring “ tag in the meta data to indicate two different artistes e.g Peruzzi ft Davido instead of Peruzzi Davido or Peruzzi and Davido .

2. Enter the correct release language

The release language field indicates the language and character set of your release I.e the language you are writing the meta data in .

Even if the language of the lyrics is different, use this field to enter the language of the metadata you’ve been filling in so it can be read and reflected correctly

3. Don’t try to manipulate the system

Metadata that doesn’t give meaningful information isn’t useful and doesn’t contribute positively to the quality of your release on streaming services.

Don’t misrepresent information about your genre or subgenre for effect. This only makes listeners (and algorithms) confused! Don’t add artistes that didn’t feature on your song to your meta data just because you want to generate clout .

4. Follow instructions of the Digital Streaming Platforms

Each streaming platforms has its own rules . Some may say that they don’t tolerate URLs, social media handles or excessive text in album artwork, please follow and abide by them. Fill in all required columns by the platforms and avoid anything they instruct or advice you to avoid .

. If you want your content to be presented alongside the top names in music while your songs is on their platforms , you must respect their rules to the fullest .

CONCLUSION

Meta Data is an all important aspect of music releases that should never be taken with levity by labels , publishers and independent artistes . It is fundamental to income generation and overall career growth of an artiste . Therefore , artiste should ensure that they make conscious efforts to maximize the impact of accurate meta data on their revenue and career as creatives .

BURNA BOY

Damini Ogulu popularly known as Burna Boy has repeatedly proved to critics and music lovers across Africa and the world as a whole why he deserves the self proclaimed title of “ Africa Giant “by dishing out good music and well coordinated, mesmerizing and sold out shows all over the world .

Burna Boy had a lot of turbulent times in the early days of his career due to several altercations with media houses , fellow celebrities , journalists and many other negative events . These issues were the subject of the intro track on his second album “ On a Spaceship “ where music critic , Osagz , lambasted Burna boy’s attitude and negative energy and also predicted a rapid end to his music career if he continues to tow the path he was then treading .

A lot has changed since 2015 when Burna dropped that album . The year 2018 witnessed an unprecedented rise in Burna boy’s music career, moving him from the “ underrated “ discussions into the “ A listers “ conversations , all thanks to after his well received “ Outside” Album, new deal with Atlantic Records and a subsequent string of Succesful singles like “Gbona”, “Anybody”, “Killing Dem”and “On the Low”.

While there is a lot to say about Burna’s boy epic rise to the top , a particularly distinctive feature of appraisal for Burna boy remains his immense efforts in putting out proper and electrifying performances at his shows and concerts all over the world .

Several artistes and instrumentalists that have worked with the artiste over the years have stated his observation to details and his dedication to ensure he puts up a solid and almost perfect ( if not perfect ) performance whenever he is opportune to do so .Burna’s talent is obviously not in doubt and having proper songs to perform has never been a problem for the 28 year old artiste from Port harcourt city in Nigeria .

In a musical dispensation where most Nigerian artistes are keen on performing for 10 minutes and leaving the stage after getting millions for shows from tickets sales and performance payments , Burna boy has shown that ensuring his fans get the best show experience and ultimate value for their money remains his priority.

Lip Syncing which is the order of the day for most A list artistes in Nigeria appears not to be the forte of the two-time Grammy nominee , most of his shows are live performances with all the drums , snares , guitars and sonorous background vocals .

A recent performance of Burna boy at a show in Paris in November , 2021 has since gone viral on social media platforms .

Ayodeji Balogun popularly known as Wizkid recently hinted on the release of his 4th studio album to be titled “ More Love, Less Ego “ via his Instagram page on the 30th Day of October, 2021. The new album is tentatively titled “ More Love , Less Ego” and we briefly examine some facts and expectations concerning this new album.

The Afropop Artiste whose single “Essence“ featuring Tems has made it to the Top Ten Billboard Charts stated via his Instagram post that his next album is dropping after his last tour date in 2022. By our calculation, the album is expected to drop between January and February 2022 after his Made in Lagos Tour in Canada comes to an end.

Regularization of Employment contracts

After finding out the laws and regulations you need to comply with as a startup , the next thing to do is to build a Team .

A team of two to six is advised as it is not necessary you have a full team in place to kick start . Having people who can handle certain fields and aspects of your startup in relation to their wealth of experience and knowledge in such fields is very important to a new start up .

A solid team makes a startup scale faster . However in building the team and getting people to come on board , the startup needs to ensure that those coming on board are free from any encumbrances from their current employer that Can prevent them from working on the startup.

The startup needs to be fully convinced that the interest of anybody will not conflict with any previous or current employer.

As such , New startups are advised to Do a thorough background check on anyone coming in to the team and be certain that there are no restrictions or issues before and while these persons were employed elsewhere.

It is also at this stage that Memorandum of Understanding and other pre incorporation contracts are drafted and executed .

Major benefits of Registration of your business or company

bilities, and contract agreements

1) Monopoly to Your Business Name

One of the advantages of registering your business name is to give you a certain uniqueness, and also a monopoly. Apart from that, when you register your business with CAC it provides you with legal and exclusive rights to your business name. That means you have to register your business with a name that no one has, and will ever use; as a certificate of incorporation will be issued to you, which will serve as a legal document that will enable you to operate with your business name.

2) Gives you Credibility with Your Customers

There is a lack of trust for most businesses by many Nigerians, because of the high rate of fraud. But when you register your business name, it gives you credibility with your potential customers as well as with the existing ones. Suppose you are willing to register your company name. In that case, it is usually perceived as strong signs of responsibility and trustworthiness as your prospective clients know that they can sue or take up matters arising with the law.

3) Brand and Reputation Upgrade : Also, registering your company enhances your business’s image, credibility and overall perception of your business. This can play a part in improving your future business dealings with third parties, as many businesses will only hire or engage with registered companies rather than with individuals.

It is a great way to build your business’s reputation, being on the Government’s records confirms your legal existence, which may make your client more comfortable transacting with your business.

5) Gaining Access to Loans

Registering your business gives you credibility with banks and financial institutions because when you apply for business loans, you’re going to have to prove that you’re a business. And documentation needed from these banks and investors before you are granted access to a loan will include seeing your business registration certificate along with other application requirements.

Your business registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission would serve as a condition precedent for extending credit to your business.

6) Attract Investors to Your Business

As a business owner, you would like to expand your business reach, and your ability to attract investors and raise money for your business will revolve around how legal your business is.

Investors are likely to invest in a registered company that is recognised with the government rather than an unregistered business that has no formal structure in place. If your business is registered, you can raise money by equity financing, which involves selling shares in your business to prospective shareholders, angel investors or venture capitalists.

7) Ensures Business Continuity

When your business has its own legal identity, it affords its perpetual succession and enables continuity of such business. This is because a registered business will continue to be in existence especially when the business has a well laid out structure; even when the owner is dead or may not be able to run the business anymore. This means your business has an unlimited life span; the business’s existence will only cease if it is formally wound up by order of the court.

8 ) Run a Customized Bank Account

A business with a CAC Registration can run a customised bank account portal with any bank of your choice. Anyone who wishes to transact any business with you will be certain of your genuineness. Operating a business bank account can also be a way you can separate personal activities from business activities. And, it is more professional to give your clients a corporate bank name for payment instead of your personal name.

9) Can Hire Employees Legally

When your business is registered, affords you the ability to employ staff legally. You gain access to hire and recruit quality and skilled employees easily from job recruitment agencies and other online platforms. You can even request for NYSC members to work at your company when registered.

10) Tax Benefits

As a registered business won’t have to pay companies tax, instead you will be accustomed to paying Personal Income Tax. The implication of this in a Federal State like Nigeria is that if you have a Director of a company, you pay your company income tax to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), and you pay your personal income tax to the relevant State Inland Revenue Service (in Lagos this is the LIRS).

Most benefits and expenses are taxable, but in a registered company in Nigeria, you could legally offset certain costs that would have been taxable as benefits in kind under personal income tax.

11) Limited Liability Protection

A business that is incorporated is deemed a separate entity. You are protected, and you are not personally held for certain liabilities.

12) Gain Benefits Deemed Fit for SMEs

When you register your business name, your business gets the opportunity of expansion. These come through the various business incentives made only available to registered Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) by the Federal Government.

The importance of registering your business can’t be overemphasized. Not only does it grant your business legitimacy, but the law also protects you. You can also enjoy the maximum operational business benefits and gain access to funding.
