Governor Mbah joined APC to create more opportunities for Enugu people — Enugu SSG
…says his second term non-negotiable
The Secretary to the Enugu State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, has said that the decision of the State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) was driven by the need to create more economic and developmental opportunities for the people of Enugu State through strategic alignment with the Federal Government.
Prof. Onyia also declared that Governor Mbah’s second term in office is non-negotiable, stressing that there is no vacancy in the Lion Building, the seat of government in Enugu State, ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The SSG made the remarks while registering as a member of the APC at Orie-Ani Amechi Ward One in Enugu South Local Government Area during the ongoing statewide electronic membership registration exercise of the party.
According to him, Governor Mbah’s alignment with the ruling party at the centre under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu positions Enugu State to access greater opportunities, partnerships, and development windows for accelerated growth.
“We thank God that our governor led us to the APC because he understands the importance of alignment with the centre, where more opportunities will come to the people of Enugu,” Onyia said.
“Since Enugu is now fully APC, we will continue to support the vision and actions of President Bola Tinubu.”
Reaffirming support for Governor Mbah’s re-election in 2027, Onyia declared that continuity was inevitable given the governor’s performance.
“We don’t have any vacancy in the Lion Building. The culture is that anyone who goes for a first term goes for a second term, talk more of a governor who is delivering outstanding results. Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah is working. His second term is non-negotiable,” he added.
The SSG credited the governor with repositioning Enugu State across critical sectors, including security, road infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic management, despite limited financial resources.
“Governor Mbah has delivered remarkably with minimal resources and has grown the state’s economy astronomically. This is the kind of leadership that inspires confidence. I thank him especially for what he has done for the people of Enugu and Enugu South Local Government,” Onyia stated.
He further expressed confidence that Enugu State would soon emerge as one of the leading states in APC membership nationwide, urging residents to mobilise their families and communities to participate actively in the party’s e-registration exercise.
“Reach out to your family members and explain why this alignment with the centre is necessary. If Governor Mbah has driven us this far without any accident, he will not drive us into any accident in the APC. Everyone, from top to bottom, is in support of the governor. APC is the direction Enugu must go,” he said.
Earlier, the Executive Chairman of Enugu South Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. Caleb Onyema Ani, also endorsed the governor, describing him as a hardworking and visionary leader whose achievements have transformed the state within a short period.
“Enugu State has not witnessed such a quintessential and workaholic governor in recent times. The people of Enugu South are happy with his performance, from the construction of Smart Green Schools and Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres to road infrastructure and human capital development. This is why our people must come out en masse to register in the APC,” Ani stated.
Other speakers at the event included the Commissioner for Local Government, Deacon Okey Ogbodo; former chairmen of Enugu South Local Government Area, Hon. Monday Eneh and Hon. Sam Onyia; and former Chief Whip of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Theresa Egbo.
They commended Governor Mbah’s transformational leadership and developmental strides within two years in office, assuring continued support from the people of/2
Enugu South and calling on residents to actively participate in the ongoing APC e-registration exercise.
Dignitaries present included the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Osinachi Nnajieze; Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Barr. Ugochi Madueke; her Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development counterpart, Mrs. Ngozi Enih;
Executive Chairman of Nkanu West Local Government Area, Chief John Ogbodo; Special Advisers and Senior Special Assistants to the Governor, party leaders, traditional rulers, among several others.

... Emphasises lessons from scars of Nigeria’s history
Governor Peter Mbah has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to continue to partner with the Federal Government to support the Nigerian Armed Forces, fallen heroes, and their families.
Mbah also stressed the need to learn from the scars of division and internal conflicts inherent in the nation’s history in order to build a more united and secure society, saying that “peace and safety must be protected by restraint, dialogue, and shared responsibility.”
Mbah gave the commitment on Thursday during the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day and Wreath-Laying Ceremony at Okpara Square, Enugu, describing January 15 of every year as a solemn day when Nigerians must pause, reflect deeply, and acknowledge the price paid by the nation’s heroes so that other citizens may live in safety.
“As a state government, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting the Armed Forces and their families. This support goes beyond ceremony. It is reflected in practical care, in advocacy, and in partnership with the Federal Government to ensure that those who serve, and those who have served, are treated with respect and care.
“On this day of remembrance, we honour those families who continue to carry their memory. And we recommit ourselves to the values for which they served: unity, discipline, service, and respect for human life.
“The wreaths we lay today remind us of the responsibility to live as citizens worthy of the sacrifices our heroes made for us,” he said.
He, however, emphasised that the sacrifices of the Nigerian Armed Forces transcended an annual ceremony and should always be borne in the hearts of all Nigerians.
“When a soldier falls, the loss does not end at the battlefield. It enters homes. It settles into families. It is borne in the human heart and becomes part of daily life for those left behind.
“Grief does not announce itself outwardly; it is carried for a lifetime by spouses, parents, brothers, sisters, and by children who grow up holding memories instead of hands.
“We recognise the weight you carry. We recognise the lives that were disrupted, the futures altered, the memories that require loving guardianship. Your loss is now ours to help you carry.
“As a society, we must not look away from that responsibility. To remember the fallen is also to care for the living. To honour the cost of human life is to ensure that families are supported with consistency and compassion,” Mbah stated.
Mbah stressed that “above all, peace and security are sustained by a mindset that understands the value of prevention.”
“Our history carries the scars of division. From the Civil War of the late 1960s to later internal conflicts, we have learned, at great human cost, what happens when unity fractures and lives become casualties of discord.
“That history reminds us that progress is never guaranteed, and that peace and safety must be protected by restraint, dialogue, and shared responsibility,” he concluded.
Speaking with reporters, President, Military Widows Association of Nigeria, Enugu State chapter, Mrs Sarah Charles Ugwuabonyi, while commending Governor Mbah for caring for welfare of military widows and their families in the state, called for jobs and skills to further relieve them.
Highpoints of the event were the inspection of a guard of honour by Governor Mbah, as well as the laying of wreaths on the cenotaph of the Unknown Soldier and the release of pigeons by the governor and other dignitaries, including the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uchenna Ugwu, as a mark of peace.
Others who laid wreaths were a representative of military widows, Mrs Fatima Umar; General Officer Commanding, 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General O. A. Fadairo; Commander, Nigerian Navy ship, Madueke, Rear Admiral N. Friday;
Air Officer Commanding, Ground Training Command, Nigerian Air Force Enugu, Air Vice Marshal A. G. Kehinde; Commissioner of Police, Enugu State, CP Bitrus Giwa; Director of the State Security Service, Enugu State Command, Mr. Humphrey Ohikhuare; Chairman, Nigerian Legion, Enugu State Chapter, Dr. Emeka Igweshi and Chairman, Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, HRM Igwe Samuel Asadu.
The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Barr. Victor Udeh; and the Chairman of the Enugu State Chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Hon. Okechukwu Edeh, among other dignitaries.
Earlier today, I visited the Enugu Smart Green School, GTC Enugu Campus, where the distribution of free school uniforms was underway.
The joy and excitement in the air were palpable. You could see it on the faces of the children and their parents, a sense of relief and renewed hope.
For the pupils and many families, this is more than just a uniform; it is a powerful signal that government is present, that education is truly being prioritised, and that every Enugu child matters.
Kudos to Governor Mbah for turning policy into real, felt impact in the lives of our children.
This is how you build confidence in public education and invest in the future of the state. Tomorrow is here!

Gov. Mbah Unveils Modern Waste Management Fleet, Targets Cleaner, Climate-Friendly State
The Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has unveiled a new fleet of modern waste management equipment comprising 10 state-of-the-art refuse compactors, seven automated road sweepers, and 200 large-capacity dumpsters, saying it marked another major step in his administration’s drive to build a clean, climate-investment-friendly, and competitive state.
Conducting the unveiling on Tuesday at the Old Government Lodge, Enugu, the governor said the step further underscored the administration’s commitment to environmental sustainability as a cornerstone of economic growth, public health, and urban development.
Speaking through the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, Mbah described the acquisition as more than the procurement of equipment, but a clear statement of intent to strengthen the backbone of Enugu State’s environmental infrastructure.
“Today’s event is a demonstration of our administration’s commitment to building the Enugu State of the future. With the introduction of these compactors, automated sweepers, and modern dumpsters, we are advancing a vision that places cleanliness, order, and sustainability at the heart of our development agenda,” the governor said.
He explained that the additional compactors, complementing existing ones, would guarantee faster and more efficient evacuation of waste across the state, while the automated street sweepers would transform Enugu closer to the standards of modern, well-planned cities around the world. The newly deployed dumpsters, he added, would eliminate indiscriminate waste disposal by bringing proper waste collection points closer to residents.
Governor Mbah stressed that environmental reform remained a central pillar of his administration, noting that no city could attract investors, grow tourism, or guarantee public health if it was overwhelmed by waste.
“A clean city is a competitive city. A clean city is a healthy city. A clean city is a city ready for growth,” he declared, adding that the reforms being implemented at the Enugu State Waste Management Authority (ESWAMA) were designed to support the state’s broader ambitions in infrastructure expansion, industrialisation, and investment attraction.
While unveiling the equipment, the governor also called on residents to play their part by embracing responsible waste disposal and environmental discipline, stressing that government efforts could only be sustained with active public cooperation.
He urged citizens to stop littering streets, drains, and open spaces indiscriminately and to make proper use of the dumpsters provided by the administration.
Earlier in his address, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Prof. Sam Ugwu, described the unveiling as an epoch-making event and a significant milestone in the state’s waste management journey.
He recalled that Enugu State won a national award last year as the cleanest state capital in Nigeria, attributing the achievement to the governor’s deep interest in environmental cleanliness and sustainability.
Prof. Ugwu also highlighted key policy interventions under the Mbah administration, including the signing into law of the Enugu State Environmental Protection Law in 2024 and the approval of the Climate Change Policy and Action Plan.
“These vehicles will enhance our operational capacity to keep our streets clean and provide a healthier environment for all residents,” the commissioner said, assuring that trained operators were already on the ground and that the equipment would be deployed immediately.
Also speaking, the Managing Director of ESWAMA, Mr. Richard Onaga, thanked the governor for what he described as a bold and visionary investment in modern waste management.

... Says "We've moved from crossroads of history to shaping history
Governor Peter Mbah has justified the political movement to the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the South East as well as the decision of the South East to endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to continue in office till 2031.
Mbah said that Tinubu’s endorsement and the massive movement to the APC, which now controlled three out of the five South East states were a paradigm shift grounded in pragmatism, noting that the region was already reaping the benefits of aligning with the centre.
The governor spoke at the South East APC Stakeholders meeting, which held at the Presidential Hotel, Enugu, on Saturday, saying, “it means that we are not standing at the crossroads of history; we are shaping history itself.”
On Tinubu’s endorsement, Mbah said, “I am thrilled even more so by the major goal of this meeting, which is to stamp a seal of endorsement on the President’s bold reforms and his candidacy in the 2027 election.
“This is no whimsical decision; it is rooted in facts – and the understanding that success as a region comes from vision that is clear enough to guide action, discipline strong enough to withstand pressure, strategy grounded in reality, and delivery that is relentless.
“Politics is nurtured by partnership; the willingness to trust each other, to align, and to work together even when the path is challenging.
“Enugu State has become a bastion of the APC. Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, Nigeria has begun the difficult work of repositioning itself for long-term strength. Hard choices have been made for sustainability.”
Continuing, he stressed, “The Renewed Hope Agenda is beyond political slogan. This endorsement is a clear decision to stand together and push this momentum further.
“It is about understanding that the ambitions we hold for our people, for our economy, for our future, are best served when vision at the centre aligns with delivery at the states and vice versa.”
Mbah emphasised that for the South East, “there has been a clear recognition from the federal government that national progress cannot be achieved with any region standing at the margins.”
“We are seeing that recognition translate into action as our common aspirations are connected to national opportunities.
“For a region teeming with entrepreneurial zest, it is ironic that energy development and gas prospecting across the South East have long seemed a distant prospect. But this is becoming an active priority, laying the groundwork for industrial growth and jobs.
“The Eastern Rail Line, connecting Port Harcourt through Aba, Umuahia, Enugu and beyond, is back on the national map, restoring the arteries of trade and mobility that once defined this region.
“Equally heartwarming is the approval of the Enugu airport concession. This is a turning point that has positioned Enugu as an international gateway for the South East, given how it opens direct access to Africa and the wider world.
“These are not symbolic gestures. They are strategic decisions in support of our region. And they reflect something deeper: a federal leadership that understands the value of decentralised execution, of strong states delivering strong outcomes, and of partnership as a tool for national renewal,” he stated.
He emphasised that going forward, the South East would pursue unity of purpose, rather than fragmented politics, which he said had undermined progress.
“Our region’s chequered history reminds us how easily progress can be undone when unity gives way to fragmentation. But it also reminds us of what is possible when purpose is shared and direction is clear. What is emerging now is the influence of sustained coordination.
“In collectively affirming an end to decades of fragmented politics in the South East, we’re saying that the South East will no longer stand as a divided political unit.
“This is a moment to think clearly and act strategically, and to remain focused on outcomes. Let us lean into partnership, not retreat into suspicion.
“Let us build, rather than fracture. And let us protect and extend the progress already in motion. That is the work before us. And that is why this endorsement matters,” he concluded.
“I’ll continue to make you proud,” Mbah assures as Nkanu royal fathers endorse him for 2027
Governor Peter Mbah has assured the people of Nkanu land and Enugu State in general that he would continue to make them proud, serving with integrity and the full measure of his capacity.
Mbah gave the assurances on Friday at the 50th coronation anniversary celebration of the traditional rule of Ihuokpara in Nkanu East Local Government Area (LGA) HRM Igwe Fidelis Ogbu Nwatu, who is also the Grand Patron of Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council.
The governor was reacting to his endorsement through the presentation of an ofo staff, the Igbo symbol of authority, truth and justice, by Igwe Nwatu and traditional rulers of Nkanu land, assisted by the Chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Ruler Council, HRM Igwe Samuel Asadu.
“I would like to begin by thanking our elders and our revered royal fathers for the event of today and what has just happened. The weight, import and significance of the ofo I have just received cannot be lost on me as an Nkanu man.
“In our culture, what you see me holding in my left hand is beyond symbols because our traditional rulers are the representatives of our ancestors. I am sure they must have communed with our ancestors for today's event to take place. We have our ancestors speaking through them.
“So, this is not an ordinary honour. This is trust, authority and it has been conferred on me by no other but by my people. It is an honour bestowed on me by my kinsmen that can never be compared to any other honour under the sun.
“I know that this endorsement is for us to continue to serve Ndi Enugu and it comes with responsibility. I understand that clearly. And I want to reassure our elders and traditional rulers that I will continue to serve Ndi Enugu with humility and with all the energy that I have and every fiber of my being, making you proud. You will never regret your action” Mbah stated.
He felicitated the celebrant for his meritorious service to his people and the Igbo land in the past 50 years, saying his longevity on the throne showed that the people, the ancestors and God were pleased with him.
“50 Years of service on the throne cannot be achieved by force. If a man has served his people for 50 years and they gathered so massively as we are seeing here today to celebrate him, then it is a reflection of honour to a man, who has dedicated his time in service to his community. So, we join rejoicing and congratulating him.
“So, on behalf of the Government and good people of Enugu State, I convey our hearty felicitations. May God grant you many more years so that we can continue to benefit from your wealth of experience, wisdom, and knowledge,” he added.
Governor Mbah equally reassured the traditional rulers of a major improvement in their welfare starting from this month.
“We know that the traditional rulers are the custodians of our values, memory, and culture. As a government, we will provide the structure and the system that work with the soul of this traditional institution, which is why in our budget this year, we placed their welfare as top priority to the government.
“So, when you receive your alerts starting for the month of January this 2026 and going forward, you are going to feel something that is humongous that you will not be able to contain your excitement. We are also going to provide vehicles to all our principal officers of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council,” he added.
Meanwhile, presenting the Ofo staff, the celebrant, who spoke on behalf of other royal fathers cited what he described as Mbah's exceptional governance and landmark projects, noting that Enugu State never had it so good.
He said the Ofo staff was an endorsement to continue his good work.
Other highpoints of the celebration was the unveiling of the book "Leadership as Service: A Portrait of Stewardship, Justice and Peace" authored by Igwe Nwatu and cutting of golden jubilee cake by the celebrant flanked by Mbah and other signatories.
The event was attended by former President of the Senate, Senator Ken Nnamani; wife of former governor of old Anambra State, Chief Patricia Nwobodo, and many political leaders, captains of industry, and lovers of the traditional ruler and Ihuokpara from across Nigeria and beyond.
NEW: Mbah sets 2 million Enugu APC membership Tmtarget, says era of Fmfringe politics over
Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, says the Enugu State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) aims to build a two-million-member base, noting that the era of fragmented politics that denied Enugu State the benefits of the centre was over.
Mbah stated this during the flag-off of the APC e-registration exercise at Owo, Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, on Thursday, describing the exercise as a defining moment to concretise the movement from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC.
“It was just barely two and a half months ago that we chose partnership, progress, and chose to stop being on the sidelines. The time that we played fragmented politics is over. We no longer want to be on the sidelines, but we want to be at the centre and play dominant politics. This requires that we support the politics at the centre.
"It suffices to say that we do have a target. We have the sentiment that we are not going to give 5 per cent and expect the same treatment as those who gave 95 per cent. So, we now have a duty to change that.
“So, we have a target of registering at least a minimum of two million persons here in Enugu because when we had this grand movement, it was not about Peter Mbah, the state government, or a particular arm of government. It was total.
“So, we have work to do to ensure that the banner of our political party is entrenched in our various homes, not just communities. This is to make sure that our people are not confused and know where we stand at the centre, state, and local government levels. We are APC in the morning. We are APC in the day and we are APC in the night,” he asserted.
Mbah explained that the movement from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC in October 2025 was not to displace those already in the house, but to make the house stronger, more viable, and more beneficial to the people of Enugu State going forward.
“So, in conducting the e-registration, we must make sure that everyone is accommodated. We have not come to displace those who were there, but we have come to co-mingle with them and increase our numbers. At the end of the day, it is the people we are going to do this politics with and not woods. It is very important that we are flexible, accommodate the people, and get everybody registered. That means that we are going to be expecting a lot of discipline and transparency from the agents, supervisors, and the coordinators,” he added.
Mbah assured that President Bola Tinubu’s programmes and the benefits of his policies would percolate to the grassroots more in the days ahead.
“If you look at some of the programmes and policies of the government, particularly the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme, it is a programme designed to empower over 8.8 million people directly. Of course, if you talk about the indirect effect, you will be talking about 40 million people that this programme is designed to lift out of the pit of poverty.
“So, if you talk about stabilising the macro indicators and we are worried and concerned about when that will percolate to the micro levels, the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme is the answer because that is going to have a direct effect on our grassroots and lift our people out of poverty,” Mbah assured.
In their remarks, the Deputy National Chairman (South) of the APC, Chief Emma Eneukwu, and the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, Enugu State chapter of the APC, Dr. Ben Nwoye, said the aim of the e-registration was to digitalise the party’s database and bring it up to 21st-century realities and needs.
Eneukwu said, “The party has been doing registration before now. But this time, the party is trying to copy what Governor Mbah is doing, just like there are now Smart Schools and Smart everything in Enugu.
NEW: Citing global tensions, Mbah tasks Enugu MDAs on N870bn IGR target
... Promises renewed vigour
Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has tasked the various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the state government to meet the N870 billion target projected in the state’s 2026 budget, citing the unpredictability of external revenue sources like the Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocation, given the prevailing geo-political tensions around the globe.
Mbah gave the charge on Monday during a Holy Mass at the Government House Chapel to formally kick-start work in all government offices in the new year.
He said that given global developments, the state should not allow itself to be taken unawares.
Recall that Mbah recently signed a record N1.62 trillion 2026 budget, which he explained would be funded through an anticipated N870 billion IGR, N387 billion FAAC allocation, and N329 billion capital receipts.
Speaking at the Holy Mass attended by the heads and members of the three arms of government, political office holders, captains of industry, traditional rulers, among other critical stakeholders, he called on all political appointees and civil servants alike to redouble their efforts, noting that the projected IGR could come from the quality of service they render to businesses and the people of the state.
“Given all the geo-political tensions across the globe, it is not going to be easy, particularly with our revenue projections. We just do not have clarity as to the direction things would go. It is extremely important we ensure that we realise the domestic revenue projection we set for ourselves this year so that we are then able to absorb the shock coming from all these geo-political tensions across the globe.
“To realise that projection comes from doing your own bit. We have ambitious revenue targets across the different MDAs. Our revenue comes based on the speed and quality of services you render. Let us have a renewed vigour to do our own bit and play our own roles,” he stated.
He stressed the need for dedication and team spirit among the state’s civil servants in 2026, describing them as the anvil of whatever the administration achieves or fails to achieve in the new year.
“Importantly, to our workers, we are still going to be counting on your support as civil servants and Permanent Secretaries. We have always said that you are the engine room of whatever success we achieve. We have to double down this year. Those little things we do, getting to work on time, treating documents expeditiously, and making sure that we play our own part in the scheme of things, matter a lot.
“We also have to continue to be champions of teamwork. We have to essentially understand that we are only as good as our weakest link. We need to support one another, knowing that we are working for one common objective; to serve the people,” he said.
While thanking the people of the state and the church for their continued prayers, good counsel, and support, he stressed the need for undiluted and unfettered feedback.
“We do not lay claim to being perfect. What we lay claim to is our resolve to serve the people optimally. That is why undiluted feedback and holding us to account become very important,” he concluded.
In his homily, the Chaplain of the Government House Chapel, Rev. Fr. Anthony Udeh, described Governor Mbah as a servant leader earnestly dedicated to the wellbeing of his people.
The Holy Mass was attended by high-profile government functionaries, including the Deputy Governor, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai; Speaker, House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uchenna Ugwu; State Chief Judge, Justice Afojulu Ozoemena; and the Chairman, Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, HRM Igwe Samuel Ikechukwu Asadu, among a host of others.
As the nation welcomes the year 2026, the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, says there will be no room for complacency on the part of his administration, promising accelerated consolidation of the gains made in the past two and a half years.
Mbah also described 2026 as a year of quantum leap for the people of Enugu State, maintaining that “our optimism is not abstract, but grounded in the concrete work we have done.”
The governor gave the assurances in his New Year broadcast to the people of Enugu State, urging optimism and unity on the part of the people of the state and the nation as a whole.
While recalling his administration’s successes in the revival of moribund assets, transformation of the transport system as well as the water sector, security, road and tourism infrastructure, educational and agricultural sectors, and the surge of investment and visitors to Enugu, Mbah acknowledged that “it is far easier to rise than it is to remain standing.”
“That is why this year demands more of us than the years before. 2026 is not a victory lap. It is a humble continuation of a journey that is nowhere near finished.
“What we have begun is not fleeting – it must now be secured for generations. We have to build well, not quickly for applause, but carefully for posterity.
“And above all, we must resist complacency. Success can seduce us into comfort. Comfort slows our steps. And when steps slow, progress slips away,” he emphasised.
On specific projects and programmes to expect in the New Year, Mbah said, “In 2026, life in Enugu will change in ever more visible and practical ways.
“Every urban road across our cities will be paved and upgraded with proper drainage and walkways, with many also receiving new streetlights to improve safety.
“Projects like the 9th Mile 24/7 water scheme, the planned Ajali Scheme revamp and Oji River will continue to push clean water directly into more homes across Enugu.
“All 260 Smart Schools will open fully, offering digital learning, science labs, renewable power and a free daily meal to more than 300,000 children.
“In every one of our 260 wards, a fully equipped Primary Healthcare Centre will open, staffed and powered to deliver real care when it is needed most.
“Enugu’s airport operations will expand, with plans to grow Enugu Air’s fleet to 20 aircraft this year, accelerating trade, tourism and investment.
“Strengthened security infrastructure, ongoing industrial revival efforts, growing support for small and medium enterprises, and expanded connectivity will ensure that more families feel economic opportunity through rising incomes, safer streets and a clearer path to a better life.”
The governor promised hell to criminals who still had the appetite to test his administration’s resolve to keep the state safe and secure.
“Let me be clear: no crime committed will go undetected and unresolved. We will track and prosecute everyone who has committed a crime. We will never drop our guard.
“We must protect what we have built, finish what we have started, and refuse complacency in any form.”
He reiterated his government’s commitment to inclusive development and called for the continued support of the citizenry, while also holding government accountable.
“This year calls for focus and commitment. It calls for every one of us to stay engaged, to stay informed, to hold ourselves and our institutions to high standards.
“Our promise remains firm: we are still determined to leave no one out in the cold. Public funds will continue to be channelled solely into projects that uplift lives,” he said.
He wished Ndi Enugu and Nigerians a happy New Year, urging optimism and unity, insisting that “the strength of our state and nation comes from working together.”
Dan Nwomeh Is The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Peter Mbah
I passed the Eke Obiangu Flyover at Emene this afternoon, now ready and completed in record time. One of the earliest gains of Enugu’s connection to the centre through collaboration between Governor Peter Mbah and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Once Governor Mbah took the bold step of dualising the federal road from the Airport Flyover to the Ebonyi State border, President Tinubu promptly approved funding for the Eke Obiangu Flyover to support the road expansion.
The notorious traffic snare that once made the junction a nightmare for motorists has disappeared. It is now a smooth, uninterrupted ride into and out of Enugu.
Kudos to Mr. President. Kudos to the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi. No president before PBAT has executed this scale of federal infrastructure in Enugu State.
Today, the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway is ongoing.
The Enugu - PH Expressway is ongoing.
The New Artisan Twin Bridges have been completed.
The Oji River - 9th Mile - Opi Federal Highway is ongoing.

Governor Peter Mbah has signed the Enugu State 2026 Appropriation Bill into Law, restating his administration’s resolve to redouble the transformations recorded across every sector so far.
Appending his signature to the document at the Executive Chamber, Government House, Enugu, on Wednesday, Mbah thanked Members of the Enugu State House of Assembly for their diligent and expedited consideration of the budget.
He promised to immediately commence implementation of the Appropriation Law tagged "Budget of Renewed Momentum."
Out of the N1.62 trillion budget, the sum of N1,296,092,465,000,b representing 80 per cent of the budget was allocated to Capital Expenditure, while N321,305,000,000, representing 20 per cent of the budget goes to Recurrent Expenditure.
This follows the established budgeting tradition under the Mbah Administration as the 2024 budget comprised 79 per cent Capital Expenditure and 21 per cent Recurrent Expenditure per cent, while the 2025 budget comprised 86 per cent Capital Expenditure and 14 per cent Recurrent Expenditure.
Also, the Economic Sector leads with N825.9 billion, which represents 51 per cent of the total budget. The Social Sector is next with N644.7 billion, representing 40.1 per cent of the budget, while Administration Sector, Justice Sector and Regional Sector follow with N128 billion, N15.8 billion, and N2 billion, respectively.
Education got the lion’s share of 32.27 per cent, with N30 billion earmarked for schools feeding in the 260 Smart Green Schools, thus maintaining the administration’s tradition of over 30 per cent allocation to the sector in 2024 and 2025.
The budget funding comprises N870 billion Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, N387 billion from Federal Account Allocation Committee, FAAC, and N329 billion from Capital Receipts.
Mbah said the 2026 budget was built on the philosophies of inclusivity, accountability, transparency, traceability, and strong institutions that assures that there is value for every kobo spent.
The governor maintained that the projected N870 IGR target was realisable, saying it only required discipline, creativity, and hard work.
He also cited the administration’s turnaround of the state’s IGR from below N30 billion it met in 2023 to over N180 billion in 2024 and N400 billion in 2025.
“We will be ending this year 2025 with an IGR of N400 billion, which is more than 83 per cent of our projected domestic revenue or IGR of N507 billion for this year.
“However, we are confident that we are not only going to achieve the over N800 billion revenue for next year, but we are also even going to overshoot it. We believe that with the unlocking of the different streams of economic potentials in Enugu State, we will realise our domestic revenue projection,” he explained.
Mbah said his dream was to make the state’s FAAC allocations a saving for the future.
“If you also look at the ratio to our expected Federal Allocation, it would be barely 27 to 28 per cent. It means that if we stay the course and realise this projected revenue for 2026, we can effectively govern Enugu State without recourse to our FAAC allocation. FAAC allocation becomes something we may just save for our children and for the rainy days,” he stated.
The governor, however, emphasised that the ambitious IGR projection could not be wished into existence, reminding appointees to perish the idea of yuletide holiday this year.
“We have projected an IGR of over N800bn. It translates to generating over N70 billion every month. And if you push further, it translates to over N18 billion every week. Again, if you drill down even further, it means we have to make over N2.5 billion every day.
“It is something we have to work extremely hard to realise. So, we do not have the luxury of wasting even one day, because it will be our billions that are being wasted. We feel the weight of the expectations on our shoulders and we are committed to it. We are going to suspend the Christmas for this year to ensure that we secure the future of our children,” he concluded
In his remark, the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Uchenna Ugwu, said that Governor Mbah’s involvement of the legislature right from the budget formation made its consideration seamless and people-centric.
“Therefore, Enugu people should expect numerous and earthshaking projects like the roads, the 135.5 rail project, 14 more aircraft, more transport terminals, Smart Secondary Schools, completion of the 260 Farm Estates, among others in 2026,” he added.
Governor Mbah Swears In 2 New Commissioners, Says No Holiday For Appointees
Governor Peter Mbah has inaugurated two new commissioners, saying the move was part of his government’s renewed momentum in delivering good and impactful governance.
The new Commissioners are Barr. Osinachi Nnajieze and Dr. Charles Egumgbe. While Barr. Nnajieze, who was the Special Adviser on Legal Matters to the Governor before his appointment replaces Dr. Kingsley Udeh, current Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, as the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Egumgbe was designated as the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Matters and Rural Development carved out from the now split Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs.
Deacon Okey Ogbodo will continue to head the Ministry of Local Government Affairs.
Speaking during the brief inauguration ceremony in the Executive Chambers, Government House, Enugu, on Wednesday, Mbah declared that there would be no holiday for both the new and old appointees, stressing that there was so much work to be done in order to meet the people’s expectations now raised so high by the administration’s massive achievements in less than three years.
As part of the efforts to strengthen the system, Mbah said all contract payments would henceforth be cleared by the Office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to checkmate observed sharp practices by some unscrupulous contractors.
“All we do in the state and achieve in the state is determined by the effectiveness of the Ministry of Justice. The Ministry of Justice is like an engine room in the true sense of it. This is because we cannot proceed without getting your clearance. If we want to move on contract, investment, project, we must get clearance from the Ministry of Justice,” he stated.
He urged the new Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to brace up for the huge task ahead, especially given the sensitiveness and enormity of responsibilities vested in the Ministry.
“Imagine that we have to spend N1.3 trillion next year on capital projects. You can then begin to imagine the work load you and your team are exposed to. Basically, you are the quality assurance and the quality control of the government. We have started a policy where there will not be any payment to any contractor without clearance from the Attorney General’s office.
“So, you have to hit the ground running; no Christmas break for you or other appointees. We have to sustain the momentum,” he asserted.
On another note, Governor Mbah described the traditional institutions and rural areas as critical centres of administration and development, hence the need to create a ministry specifically dedicated to Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development.
He directed the new Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Dr. Egumgbe, to work to strengthen the traditional institutions.
“We believe that our traditional instituitions are a crtitical part of what we do because the Igwes (traditional rulers) are the eyes and the ears of government in their various communties. This is why people that occupy those thrones are to be people of impeccable character and must be elected by the people.
“Therefore, it is my hope that you strengthen sanity and order in that subsector,” the governor charged him.
In his acceptance speech on behalf of the new commissioners, Barr. Nnajieze said that they understood the weight of expectations on them, assuring that they would add impetus to his humongous vision and unprecedented transformation of Enugu State.
“We thank you very much for the privilege to be at the echelon of this vision. We will drive the vision with you and we will be with you every step of the way,” he assured.
Sea of heads at Okpara Square as Phyno made a powerful homecoming at the Enugu Road Block. From the Coal City to global stages, Enugu is where the journey began, where his identity was shaped, where he honed his skills, and where he found his voice as a proud Igbo rapper at a time when it was far from the industry norm. But the Road Block was not just about Phyno. It is a vibrant platform for budding talents to find expression, share the spotlight, and announce themselves. Kudos to Governor @PNMbah for restoring confidence, energy, and pride to Enugu as a place where culture, talent, and creativity thrive.
*Enugu Govt Debunks Fake News Ceding Border Community to Kogi*
The Enugu State Government has debunked a fake report, which claimed that the National Boundary Commission, NBC, had ceded Ette, a border community in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area to Kogi State.
In a statement issued by the Secretary, Enugu State Boundary Committee, Dr. Solomon Ejim, on Friday, the state government assured the people of Ette as well as Igbo-Eze North LGA and Enugu State in general that the NBC was yet to publish any report or decision on the protracted interstate land dispute.
The statement read, “The attention of the Enugu State Government has been drawn to a fake and misleading online report claiming that the National Boundary Commission (NBC) has made a decision on the age-long interstate boundary dispute between Enugu State and Kogi State to the effect that Ette community in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State has been administratively ceded to Kogi State.
“The Enugu State Government wishes to state categorically that the report is fake. The Director-General of NBC has also been contacted by the government and he vehemently debunked and disowned the report as outrightly false and not emanating from the Commission.
Therefore, the people of Igbo-Eze North LGA and Enugu State in general are by this press statement enjoined to ignore the fake news, which is a clear handiwork of mischief makers. They are further enjoined not to entertain any form of anxiety, but go about their normal businesses, as no such resolution has been reached by the Commission in respect of the Enugu State–Kogi State.According to him, he was legally allocated a parcel of land after making a genuine offer of payment for the establishment of the University of Sports, which he said has since become a beneficial institution in his community.
Enugu Govt Moves to Deregister Unapproved Estates, Bans Their Advertisement
The Enugu State Government has announced that it will commence the deregistration of all unregistered and unapproved estate developments across the state.
This was made known by the Managing Director of the Enugu State Geographic Information System Service (ENGIS), Mr. Chiwetalu Nwatu, during a joint stakeholders’ meeting involving the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN) and the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP).
The meeting was convened to address accumulated challenges in estate development, land administration, and physical planning in Enugu State.
Nwatu stated that the measures formed part of the government’s resolve to sanitise the real estate and land development sector and restore order to land administration in the state.
He emphasised that only properly registered and duly approved developers will be permitted to operate in Enugu State, noting that the decision is aimed at protecting members of the public, eliminating land-related fraud, and enforcing planning and development standards.
The ENGIS Managing Director also disclosed that the state government has directed an immediate halt to the advertisement and promotion of all unregistered and unapproved estates, warning that developers and advertising platforms found promoting unapproved estates would face sanctions.
According to him, the unchecked advertising of unregistered estates has continued to mislead unsuspecting members of the public, exposing them to fraudulent schemes and avoidable losses.
He explained that the stakeholders’ engagement was aimed at harmonising concerns, strengthening compliance, and proposing sustainable solutions to support the development of a comprehensive master plan to guide Enugu State’s growth.
Nwatu commended the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, for his commitment to institutional reforms and orderly urban development, describing the establishment of ENGIS as a critical intervention that has strengthened regulation, transparency, and accountability in the land sector.
He expressed confidence that the collaboration between ENGIS, REDAN, and NITP would deepen professionalism, improve compliance, and deliver a more organised, secure, and investor-friendly real estate environment across Enugu State.

Your honeymoon is over, Gov Mbah tells 13 newly sworn-in Permanent Secretaries
Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has sworn in 13 newly appointed permanent secretaries, charging them to immediately align with his administration’s delivery-oriented governance model, stressing that there would be no honeymoon period for them in office.
The governor gave the directive during the swearing-in ceremony held at the Executive Council Chamber, Government House, Enugu, on Monday.
The new Permanent Secretaries are Chigbogu Sunday Nnaji, Phoebe Nkechinyere Edeh, Philip Anthony Arum, Egbonwonu Jeremiah, Ifeoma Justina Igwe, Ngozi Sylverline Egbo, Nkiru Henrietta Ede-Ogunnaike, Pamela Ikpa, Kennis Ngene, Anyaora I. Okereke, Adaobi Theresa Nwodo, Ikechukwu Ezenwukwa, and Paul Nwabuisi.
This brings to 27 the number of Permanent Secretaries in the State.
Mbah explained that the appointments were strictly merit-based, having emerged from a rigorous and transparent selection process, while also filling existing vacancies in the civil service to promote equality, inclusion and fairness.
Governor Mbah reminded the new Permanent Secretaries that so much responsibility accompanied their elevation, noting that the reward for hard work was more work.
“I believe you worked very hard to get to this level in your career, and you went through a very rigorous process to be selected. So, it is well deserved. But let me also remind you that the honeymoon is over. To whom much is given, much is expected,” he said.
He described Permanent Secretaries as the engine room of government and custodians of institutional memory, stressing that governance under his administration was carrying out far-reaching reforms across all sectors.
Referrimng to the 2026 budget proposal before the Enugu State House of Assembly, Mbah noted that the state had crossed the trillion-naira appropriation threshold for the first time, with over ₦1.3 trillion earmarked for capital projects.
“These reforms are not makeshift. They are meant to be institutionalised and to outlive us. You have a duty to ensure that processes are properly documented and sustained,” he said, adding that the expanded scale of government programmes required an enhanced and more skilled workforce.
Governor Mbah further stressed the importance of ICT competence, noting that all ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) had been integrated into the state’s e-governance platform.
“As leaders and chief accounting officers, you must not be beginners in ICT. We expect at least medium- to advanced-level competence,” he told them.
He highlighted key sectoral reforms, including the smart green schools revolution in education, the construction and ongoing equipping of Type-2 primary healthcare centres across the 260 wards, the transformation of the transportation system with CNG buses and modern terminals as well as the establishment of 260 farm estates to boost agricultural production and exports.
In tourism, the governor reiterated the plans to attract at least three million visitors to the state, supported by massive investments in hospitality infrastructure, tourist sites and access, while the launch of Enugu Air was aimed at improving connectivity and driving economic growth.
He also noted that the administration had exceeded the 35 per cent Affirmative Action benchmark in the appointment of Permanent Secretaries, reflecting its gender sensitivity and commitment to inclusion and fairness.
“The world is watching us. We must hold ourselves to the highest standards of discipline and imbibe our governance philosophy of transparency, accountability, accessibility and collaboration, as clearly outlined in the citizens’ charter,” he added.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Mr. Ikechukwu Ezenwukwa, thanked the governor for the confidence reposed in them and pledged their unwavering commitment to the administration’s vision.
He acknowledged the gains recorded by the Mbah Administration in revenue generation and infrastructural development.
“We pledge to add value to these achievements. We assure you that you will not be disappointed in appointing us,” Ezenwukwa concluded.
Enugu Exco Approves Construction, Reconstruction Of 1,022 Urban Roads
The Enugu State Government has approved the construction and reconstruction of 1,022 urban roads in line with Governor Peter Mbah’s administration’s target to pave all the roads in Enugu metropolis before the end of his first term in office.
This was made known at the end of the Enugu State Executive Council meeting at the weekend.
Briefing Government House correspondents, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo; Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Osita Okoh; and Commissioner for Trade, Investment and Industry, Dr. Sam Ogbu-Nwobodo, said that the Executive Council also approved the Business Enabling Reform Action Plan for 2026, as well as a series of events for an unforgettable “Detty December” experience marking the forthcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Throwing more light on the 1,022 roads, Okoh said it was an effort to maximise the dry season window, ensuring that contracts were awarded early and contractors mobilised to the various sites from January 2026.
“We have done the first phase, which was over 90 roads. We have also done phase two, which also exceeded the earlier planned 141 urban roads. So, we are now in phase three. Here, we are going to award contracts that will cover all the roads that are yet to be paved in Enugu metropolis.
“These roads cut across New GRA, Old GRA, Emene Zone, Abakpa Zone, Thinkers Corner, Airport Corner, Upper Meniru in Awkunanaw, Idaw River Layout, Gariki, Maryland, Achara Layout, Uwani, One Day and Upper One Day, Trans Ekulu, Independence Layout, Independence Layout Phase II, Coal Camp Zone, Pocket Layout, as well as Ogui and Asata Zone, among other places. We want to cover the uncovered areas roads in the Enugu metropolis,” he said.
On his part, Dr. Ogbu-Nwobodo explained that the Business Enabling Reform Action Plan for 2026 was aimed at enhancing the Enugu business-friendly ecosystem, having achieved a major leap from 36th position to 6th position in the national ease of doing business survey.
“Three years ago, Enugu was ranked 36th out of 37 (36 states and the FCT). But presently, it has performed well in the ease of doing business rankings. This translates to more robust engagements with the private sector and increased investment inflow into the state. So, as you enhance your environment through processes that are transparent and predictable in land administration, tax administration, permits, and business-to-government interfaces, you get more capital inflow,” he stated.
... Plans to add additional 14 planes to Enugu Air
... Car Assembly, Enugu Airport Concession to get N10bn each
The Enugu State Government says it has earmarked the sum of N10bn in the 2026 budget as the state’s equity contribution to the first phase of the 135.5km standard gauge rail it plans to build in the state.
This was made known during a press briefing by the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Barr. Chris-Roberts Ozongwu at the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre, Enugu, on Thursday.
Recall that Mbah had on December 2, laid a N1.62Trn 2026 budget, christened “Budget of Renewed Momentum” before the Enugu State House of Assembly.
The budget figure, which is a South East record and a 66.5 per cent increase over the N971bn revised 2025 budget, comprises N1.3Trn Capital Expenditure, representing 80 per cent of the total budget and N321.2bn Recurrent Expenditure, representing 20 per cent of the budget.
Breaking it down to journalists, Ozongwu said the rail project was in keeping with Governor Mbah’s campaign promise to evolve a multimodal transport system incorporating rail, tram and inland water services to complement existing road transportation in the state.
The rail project is also designed to terminate at doorsteps of the neighbouring states for easy continuation to enhance connectivity, especially among the South East States.
In the same vein, the government also plans to add additional 14 aircraft to increase the fleet of the state-owned airline, Enugu Air, to 20 planes by the end of 2025.
He explained that Enugu Air, which launched in July 2025 with three aircraft, had been quite lucrative, noting that the government had concluded plans to add three planes to the airline’s current fleet to bring it to six before the end of the year.
Other planned key expenditures in the transport space in the coming year include a N10bn equity contribution to the Akanu Ibiam International Airport concession in line with Governor Mbah’s vision to make Enugu a West African regional aviation and logistics hub.
Ozongwu added that the government had also earmarked another N10bn for vehicle manufacturing programme that would see the state procure and have assembled in Enugu a total of 2,100 taxis for the administration’s youth empowerment scheme and the Distress Response Squad, DRS, the state’s special police unit.
He said the government was confident that the 2026 budget would outperform the 2025 budget, adding that Mbah runs the state with a private sector mentality.
He added that the allocation of 51.1 per cent and 40.1 per cent of the total budget to the economic sector and social sector, respectively, underscored the administration’s commitment to private sector-driven economic growth and human development.
"Human life is one of improvements. We achieved about 85 per cent of our performance and it is almost likely that we will continue in that same trajectory to move this state to 90 per cent performance.
"We have the indices to do that. We have the personnel, the acumen and ready to raise the money to do that. Expect better performance next year.
“So, something is going on in this state. It is a feel-good factor. Come to Enugu and invest because your investment is going to be protected, your returns are going to be wonderful. Join us and be part of this success story,” he said.
His counterpart in the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Engr. Augustine Agu, praised the governor’s achievements, noting: “Governor Mbah has done in two years what others could not do in eight years. His private-sector discipline is evident. We fully support him.” He however urged the government to consider their interest in operating the BRT buses and transport terminals, insisting that they have all it takes to perform creditably.
Comrade Kingsley Edeh, speaking for the Amalgamated Tricycle Riders Association in Enugu State, noted that there are 18,000 Keke riders in the state, and appealed for taxis to be made available as alternatives for riders who may wish to transition.
He welcomed the government’s commitment that no one will be displaced but rather reorganized into a more efficient system.
The Commissioner inaugurated a joint review committee comprising ministry officials and transport union representatives to finalize operational modalities ahead of the full rollout of the BRT buses on the dedicated routes, with the launch date to be announced soon.
NEW: Enugu Govt to Restrict Tricycles, Yellow Buses From Major Highways as BRT Rollout Begins Soon
The Enugu State Government has announced plans to restrict the operation of tricycles (Keke), yellow buses, and minibuses from five major highways across Enugu city, paving the way for the smooth implementation of the state’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
This was made known by the Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Obi Ozor, during a consultative meeting with transport unions and stakeholders at the ministry’s headquarters in Enugu on Monday.
Dr. Ozor listed the affected traffic corridors as Okpara Avenue–Abakaliki Road–New Haven Junction–Naira Triangle–Emene Airport; Ogui Road–Chime Avenue–Naira Triangle; and New Haven Junction–Bisala Road–Rangers Avenue–WAEC–Nkpokiti–Zik’s Avenue.
Others are Ogui Road–Presidential Road–WAEC–Nkpokiti and the entire Agbani Road stretch.
According to the commissioner, these will become dedicated BRT routes in line with Governor Peter Mbah’s vision to reposition Enugu as a modern, multimodal and globally competitive city. He however stresed that taxis will be also allowed to ply the BRT routes.
He noted that tricycles were never designed for high-speed highways, stressing that their presence on such routes disrupts traffic flow and puts lives at risk.
“We must be open to change. This reform is not about taking anyone’s job. It is about reorganizing the system so that BRT buses operate on the primary roads, yellow buses serve the secondary routes, and tricycles provide last-mile connectivity. Everyone has a place in the value chain,” he stated.
Dr. Ozor observed that the government has procured 200 CNG-powered BRT buses, alongside 4,000 electric taxis to be assembled locally at ANAMMCO in Enugu, with the first 1,000 taxis ready within three months.
He said the Mbah administration has also built 84 new bus shelters across the city, forming the backbone of a modern transit network designed around safety, comfort, and affordability.
He stated that Enugu, with an estimated two million daily commuters, requires at least 8,000 buses to meet mobility demands. The new BRT buses, he added, are equipped with padded seats, functional air-conditioning, WiFi, and strict safety features.
“Passengers do not stand in these buses, and every vehicle is tracked and monitored from our central command and control centre. The BRT fare now comes with a 47 percent discount to cushion transportation costs for citizens,” he said.
Dr. Ozor also announced some key resolutions reached at the meeting. He said that transport unions interested in participating in BRT bus or terminal operations are to submit proposals, including financial models, for government evaluation.
He further explained that the Ije Card, the state’s electronic fare payment system designed to make commuting faster, cashless, and more convenient, will be decentralized so that sales points reach five million residents within 90 days.
He added that the government regrets delays in allocating loading bays at the new transport terminals, noting that proposals are under review and would be finalized soon.
He encouraged the transport unions to access financial facilities to procure their own buses or to participate in the BRT operations space.
“There are enormous investment opportunities as Enugu expands its connectivity to other cities,” he said.
Stakeholders across the transport unions expressed their support for the state’s transport transformation agenda, saying they recognized the long-term benefits for commuters, operators, and the economy of the state.
The Enugu State Chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Comrade Chidiebere Aniagu, stated that the union was not opposed to the reforms and shares the government’s vision for a safer and more efficient transportation ecosystem. He appealed to the government to address the concerns of their members.

Across Enugu State, we are demonstrating what these values mean in practice - modernising institutions, expanding infrastructure, transforming education through our Smart Schools, strengthening security, growing the economy, and delivering real improvements to the daily lives of our people. It is reassuring to see these shared ideals reflected in the conversations and commitments of colleagues from across the federation.
I extend my sincere gratitude to our host, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu (@jidesanwoolu) for his warmth and hospitality. ENUGU STATE generated ₦180.50 billion in Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) in 2024. ENUGU STATE budget for 2025 was ₦971.08 billion, of which ₦133.14 billion is for Recurrent Expenditure. If Enugu State were to fund its 2025 Recurrent Expenditure using its 2024 IGR, it would cover 135.60% of it.
This means Enugu is fairly and comfortably able to fund its current Recurrent Expenditure budget with its previous year's IGR

Enugu, EU Strengthen Partnership, As Governor Mbah Receives EU Delegation
The Enugu State Government and the European Union, EU, have committed to strengthening their partnerships across various sectors of the economy.
This was made known during a courtesy visit to the Enugu State governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, by a delegation of the EU at Government House, Enugu, at the weekend.
The delegation, led by the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, Mr. Gautier Mignot, also comprised the Ambassador of Belgium to Nigeria, Mr. Pieter Leenknegt, and his Portuguese counterpart, Mr. Paulos Martins dos Santos, among other senior diplomats.
Mignot said the EU was eager to strengthen partnerships with Enugu State in ways that meet the administration’s expectations and align with its vision.
“The purpose of the visit is to meet you, pay you a courtesy visit, to talk about the partnership between the European Union and Enugu State, its potential, and your vision about the future.
“Here in Enugu State in particular, we have been partnering in two sectors, which are education and energy. On energy, we have several projects ongoing. One is Solar for Health, which is implemented by NTU International.
“Enugu is one of the seven states benefiting from this project and under it we will provide technical assistance and funding for the construction of 20 solar microgrids to power 20 primary health centers and 124 small- and medium-size enterprises.
“We also have the Small Hydro Power for Agro-industrial Sectors Project implemented by UNIDO. Finally, we have the Nigeria Energy Support Programme, which is implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation, GIZ,” he stated.
This, according to the envoy, included electrification and investment support, training and capacity building, and the funding of three interconnected minigrids up to the capacity of 1 MW to electrify 1,000 beneficiaries.
He also said that Enugu State was one of the states selected from the six geopolitical zones for the ‘Education and Youth Empowerment in Nigeria, Expand, Integrate, and Strengthen Systems (EISS) to Build Teachers’ Capacity and Resilience’, which is being implemented by UNESCO.
Mignot explained that the programme would see to the training of teachers in the Smart Green Schools till June 2028.
He highlighted the partnership between the EU and the Eastern Nigeria International Film Festival, an annual event in Enugu, noting that the event, whose 2025 edition held in Enugu, saw “teachings by aspiring filmmakers with the grant awarded to the best to implement his project of short films as well as the presentation of some movies.”
Ambassador Leenknegt, on his part, highlighted Belgium’s various economic interests in Enugu State and Nigeria, including Emenite Limited, a joint Nigerian-Belgium venture.
“They have existed here for as long as since 1961. They are definitely delivering high-quality products. It is a company with more than 300 employees from the region and I think it will be good to keep fostering this relationship between Belgium and Nigeria,” he stated.
Speaking, the Ambassador of Portugal emphasised the European country’s interests and exploits in the energy, infrastructure, and agricultural sectors of the Nigerian economy, noting also that “the footprint of the European Union in this country is so huge and multidimensional.”
Mbah, in his remarks, appreciated the EU for its partnership and alignment of its programmes with those of his administration in education, health, and various other sectors.
“I have seen a huge alliance between our vision and projects and the aims and objectives of what the EU is doing, particularly as regards your programmes and projects across Africa.
“It has become necessary to equip Enugu children with knowledge and skills to compete in the global economy; hence, we are investing over 33 per cent of our total budget in education. It is a radical move. We know that if we fail to spend that money and equip these kids, we will pay 10 times the money in future,” Mbah stated.
He invited the EU and its member states to be part of the opportunities in the aviation and energy sectors of Enugu State’s economy, noting that his administration would do everything possible to ensure that investments and businesses succeed in Enugu State.
“We have launched Enugu Air. The international wing of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport will soon become operational. That means that we will have more international carriers that will fly from Enugu. We urge you to begin to talk to your home carriers to also begin to think about Enugu.
“We also have opportunities in the gas sector. We are working with the Federal Government to add the gas pipeline, so we are going to unlock the economic potential we have in the subsector gas. We are open for business.”
ADE BURAIMO’s Alpha Morgan Bank Thrust Into Crisis as Alleged System Glitch Triggers N230m Financial Breach
Leadership at Alpha Morgan Capital (often referred to informally as “Alpha Morgan Bank”), led by Managing Director Ade Buraimo, has come under public scrutiny following a wave of online complaints alleging that a system glitch resulted in the loss or unauthorized movement of approximately N230 million from customer accounts.
The bank and the affected customers have taken the matter to court, jointly suing 19 financial institutions in an attempt to recover the allegedly stolen funds.
A total of N230,978,536 was allegedly stolen from the accounts of NEM Insurance Plc and Extension Publications Limited at Alpha Morgan Bank through unauthorized transfers to multiple accounts across 19 financial institutions during what the bank described as a system glitch.
According to multiple customers who shared their experiences on social platforms and consumer-complaint channels, the alleged incident involved unexpected debits and a prolonged lack of official communication from the institution. Some account holders reported that their attempts to seek clarification or restitution were met with silence or delayed responses, increasing frustration and fueling speculation about internal lapses.
The suit, filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos, seeks urgent orders to block multiple bank accounts across the financial sector and recover the allegedly diverted funds.
According to an affidavit sworn to by Dayo Abe, a litigation officer at the law firm of Babafemi Akinsete & Co., the technical malfunction in Alpha Morgan Bank’s system was exploited by certain service-merchant agents operating as digital financial-services providers.
These agents, the affidavit states, “took advantage of the glitch and unlawfully initiated multiple transfers” from the customers’ accounts into accounts domiciled in the 19 financial institutions now listed as defendants.
Further investigation by Alpha Morgan Bank reportedly revealed that the total amount illegally moved from the accounts of NEM Insurance Plc and Extension Publications Limited was N230,978,536, spread across multiple bank accounts linked to several BVNs.
Following the bank’s complaint, the 19 financial institutions were said to have placed temporary post-no-debit restrictions on the suspicious accounts.
However, the plaintiffs warn that unless all accounts connected to the perpetrators’ BVNs—including accounts not yet identified—are frozen, the funds may be irretrievably lost.
The affidavit explains that the suspects had already begun transferring the money from the first-level beneficiary accounts into other banks to “continue to unlawfully dissipate the said funds.”
The plaintiffs argue that the bank and its affected customers have suffered “humongous fraud” resulting from the system glitch, and that failure to immediately block the linked accounts will cause “untoward hardship and dire financial loss” to both the bank and its shareholders.
They are therefore asking the Federal High Court to issue an order compelling the 19 banks to reverse and refund all “wrongfully, illegally, and illicitly debited” sums back into Alpha Morgan Bank’s settlement and collection account.
The court has not yet fixed a date for the hearing.
Several individuals affected by the incident claim they have been left without clear explanations regarding when the alleged “massive glitch” occurred, how the reported N230 million outflow happened, and what remediation steps the institution is taking.
A few customers described the experience as “distressing,” stating that they had received no direct updates other than automated acknowledgements.
While the complaints do not provide evidence of intentional wrongdoing, the situation has raised questions about internal controls, technical safeguards, and executive oversight under Ade Buraimo’s leadership. Industry analysts note that even unintentional system failures can severely impact customer confidence if not communicated promptly and transparently.
Financial-sector observers emphasize that regulatory guidelines require firms to promptly notify clients of significant service disruptions and to maintain strong protections against erroneous or unauthorized transactions.
… announces retirement of iconic jersey number 5, welfare plan for ex-Rangers players
Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah has pledged to immortalise the late Nigerian football legend, Chairman Christian Chukwu, describing him as a national treasure whose life and career transcended sport and spoke directly to the soul of the nation.
Speaking at the Night of Tributes in honour of the former Green Eagles captain at the Enugu International Conference Centre, Wednesday, Governor Mbah said Chukwu’s legacy would be preserved through concrete actions, including the retirement of the iconic Number 5 jersey he wore throughout his Rangers International FC career.
“As a fitting tribute to his exploits as a central defender, we will be retiring the Number 5 that Chairman Chukwu proudly wore,” Mbah announced to applause from guests.
The governor also declared that the Enugu State Government would take responsibility for the welfare of 109 ex-Rangers players, working with the Federal Government to further immortalise Chukwu’s name and achievements.
“When I learned of his death, it felt as though a part of our collective spirit had left us,” Mbah said. “He was more than a defender, more than a captain – he was a unifying beacon at a time our nation sought symbols of pride. He united us, inspired us, and carried our hopes with quiet dignity.”
“He was a proud son of Enugu, an icon of Igboland, and a symbol of what it means to serve with humility and courage,” the governor added. “His life teaches us that leadership is not about titles, but about sacrifice, discipline, and the ability to inspire others.
“To the family he leaves behind, your loss is deeply felt by all of us,” Mbah told the gathering. “May the legacy he built bring you comfort and pride, knowing that his name will live on not only in Enugu but in the hearts of football lovers around the world.
“Let us keep the flame of ‘Chairman’ burning brightly, not just in our memories, but in our everyday pursuit of excellence, unity, and resilience. That is the greatest honour we can give him”, he added.
Chairman Chukwu, widely regarded as one of Africa’s greatest footballers, captained both the Enugu Rangers and the Nigerian national team, then known as the Green Eagles, leading them to historic victories. Beyond his playing days, he was revered for his leadership, humility, and discipline, qualities Mbah said “will illuminate the paths of future generations.”
Tributes also poured in from his daughter, Barr. Adaora Ndibe, who eulogised him as a loving and exemplary husband and father, and from his sister, Mrs. Stella Onwe, who described him as the pillar of the family. Renowned former Rangers and Green Eagles goalkeeper, Emmanuel Okala, praised his exceptional leadership abilities, humility, discipline and commitment to his family and friends.
Other speakers included former Governor of old Anambra State and former Minister of Works, Senator Jim Nwobodo, represented by Deacon Okey Ogbodo, Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Matters and Rural Development; former Inspector General of Police, Chief Ogbonnaya Onovo; General Manager of Rangers International FC, Barr. Amobi Ezeaku, represented by the Secretary, Barr. Alexander Egbo; and former Chairman of Enugu Sports Club, Barr. Emeka Etiaba.
Other dignitaries at the event included former Governor of Anambra State, Dame Virginia Etiaba; past and current members of the Enugu State Executive Council; former member of the House of Representatives, Barr. Chijioke Edeoga; Dr. Ibenaku Onoh and Chief John Ogbodo, council chairmen of Enugu North and Nkanu West LGAs, respectively; members of the Rangers International FC management, and several current and ex-Rangers players.
Chukwu, fondly called “Chairman” by fans and teammates, passed away on April 12, 2025, at the age of 74. The Enugu State Government thereafter undertook to sponsor his burial and constituted a burial committee chaired by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Barr. Lloyd Ike Ekweremadu Jr.
His final journey commenced on Sunday, August 10, 2025, with a Service of Songs at St. Andrew’s Basilica Anglican Church, Trans Ekulu, Enugu, and a colloquium on “The Life and Times of Christian Chukwu, the Chairman”, on Thursday, August 14, at the Enugu Sports Club.
On Friday, August 15, there will be a novelty match in his honour at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, at 4:00 p.m.
On Saturday, August 16, 2025, his remains will lie in state at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, at 7:30 a.m. The funeral mass will follow at St. Philip’s Anglican Church, Obe, at 11:00 a.m., after which he will be laid to rest at his country home in Obe, Nkanu West LGA.
Globally celebrated novelist and one of the most influential contemporary writers, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has praised the positive turnaround in Enugu under the Peter Mbah Administration, saying the state’s dark times were over.
Speaking during a courtesy call to Governor Mbah at the Government House, Enugu, on Sunday, she stated:
“Arriving in Enugu, there is a feeling of calm and very welcoming. This is the city that I have always loved. I think, in the past, it had some dark times. It seems to me that the light is back,” she said.
The literary icon also told Government House correspondents that she left the meeting with Mbah feeling very inspired by his long-term vision, people-oriented policies and programmes, and the impressive representation of women in his government.
“I have left this meeting feeling very inspired. Surprisingly inspired because I wasn't sure what to expect. But I have to say that I am so inspired. I am filled with a lot of admiration for the governor's vision; for his ability to think long term, which is something that I think we need more of in this country. And also for what seems to me very humane point and a kind of outlook that I think is borne from the desire to do well.
“By doing well, I mean to do things that touch the lives of the ordinary people in Enugu State. That's for me very inspiring. It's also inspiring to hear and see that the women are very well represented in his cabinet,” she stated.
She hailed the ongoing construction of Smart Green Schools in each of the 260 political wards in Enugu and the allocation of well over 33 per cent in the state’s 2024 and 2025 annual budgets to education.
“I have always felt very strongly that education has to be at the centre of any kind of forward-looking vision for any state in Nigeria. I was very impressed to hear about the Smart Green Schools. Of course, to value something, you have to invest in it. So, that the governor of Enugu State is investing bigger portion of the budget, more than UNESCO recommends, I think is something very powerful.
“So, the idea of trying to reach children in rural areas, who might not have the opportunity to get really very good elementary education, is again, a very inspiring example of the ability to think long-term about the problem that we have. I think it is a shining example of the way forward,” Adichie concluded.
Meanwhile, receiving the multiple awards winning author, who also gifted him an autographed copy of her latest work, "Dream Count," Governor Mbah described her as a literary giant, inspiration to the younger generation, and an ambassador of Igbo and African cultures.
"Chimamanda is a proud ambassador of Igbo culture, who continues to elevate African narratives on the global stage," he stated.
He said his government was investing heavily in education to be able to produce many more of her type and others, who would paint Enugu State, Nigeria, and Africa in glowing colours in various fields of human endeavors across the world.
Odeluwa, as Adiche is also called, was in Enugu for the Things Fall Apart Festival 2025, which was held at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, at the weekend.
