Governor Mbah commends immigration officer who apprehended runaway suspected ritualist
The Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has commended immigration officer, Prince Orji Ugochukwu for his exemplary conduct in apprehending the prime suspect in the recent gruesome incident that occurred in Umumba, Ezeagu Local Government Area of the state.
The suspect was intercepted by Officer Ugochukwu while attempting to flee the country through a Nigerian border post.
The Governor, who received Ugochukwu at the Government House, Enugu, Monday, praised him for his bravery, integrity, and sense of duty.
Taking to his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, @PNMbah, Governor Mbah shared: “I was delighted to receive Prince Orji Ugochukwu, the immigration officer who apprehended the prime suspect in the gruesome incident that occurred in Ezeagu, while the suspect was attempting to flee across the Nigerian border.”
Governor Mbah lauded the officer’s moral courage and professionalism during a moment that tested his character.
“Ugochukwu has distinguished himself as a man of integrity who, when faced with a test of character, chose duty over personal gain and upheld the honour of his uniform,” the Governor stated.
“His actions reflect the very spirit of service we strive to instil in our institutions.”
Describing Ugochukwu as a role model for both his colleagues and the general public, Governor Mbah emphasized the importance of such conduct in building a society grounded in justice and accountability.
“He is indeed a worthy role model, and we greatly appreciate his effort,” the Governor added.
The Enugu State Government says it has moved Miss Ukamaka Okonkwo, the lucky girl that was rescued from the dungeon of Obi Levi Obieze, the alleged ritualist and kidnapper at Ndiagu Umumba in Ezeagu LGA of the state to a government facility for therapy and rehabilitation.
The Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, who made this known on Sunday, said that this was at the instance of the state governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, given the trauma she must have passed through.
Mrs. Enih said the governor has also awarded a scholarship to Miss Okonkwo that would see her through education from her present class to the university.
“We travelled to Ndiagu Umumba, Ezeagu LGA, today at the governor’s instance to meet with parents of Ukamaka, and to bring her to Enugu where she will undergo the necessary therapy and be fully rehabilitated. You can imagine the level of trauma this young girl must have passed through.
“So, the government wants to ensure that she bounces back fully in the shortest possible time. Therefore, the Ministry of Children,Gender Affairs and Social Development, will be responsible for providing therapies and counselling to her before reintegrating her back into the society.
“The Governor has also graciously awarded a scholarship to her, which is to see her through university education from her current class. This is just a way of reassuring her and her parents that they are not alone and to equally put smiles on their faces. Government wants to ensure that she fulfils her glorious destiny because this is a destined child.
“In addition, a government delegation visited Mr. Theophilus Ezih and Mrs. Chinenye Ezih, parents of the deceased boy, Chimaobi Ezih, at Agba Umana in Ezeagu LGA to commiserate with them over the unfortunate incident. We share their pains,” she stated.
She, however, said that the identity of the pregnant woman also found dead in the Ndiagu Umumba dungeon was yet to be identified to be able to trace her relatives. She assured that the government and the relevant security were working on it, maintaining that all the culprits would be brought to book.
“As you are well aware, this is a government that has zero tolerance for crime. Government has already demolished the property linked to these dastardly acts in line with extant laws of Enugu State.
“The police and other security agencies are working with the government to track down and bring back those still at large to face justice. That is the only way to appease the spirits and souls of the deceased and to get our society rid of such crimes,” she concluded.
Also on the government’s delegation to the affected families were the Deputy Chairman of Ezeagu Local Government Council, Hon. Nkiru Ugwuagu, and the Head, Child Department, Ministry of Children,Gender Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Clementina Ogbu.

… Enugu in the news non-stop for great things happening – FG
… We guarantee most memorable NAFEST experience – Mbah
Enugu State has bagged the hosting rights for the 2025 National Festival of Arts and Culture themed “Connected Culture.”
Handing over the hosting rights to Governor Peter Mbah at the Enugu State Government House, the Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture, Obi Asika, said that the choice of Enugu for the event, which takes place from November 22 to 29, 2025, was based on the city’s rich history, cultural heritage, potentials, and recent developments which he described as 'great things happening' in the state.
This was even as Governor Mbah, promised participants a most memorable NAFEST experience.
Asika said, “Enugu has been on the news nonstop for great things. We see what is happening and we are proud of what you are doing and we want to be part of it. My supervising minister – the Honourable Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy - is happy about NAFEST coming to Enugu.
“Enugu is one of the best cities in Nigeria and you have one of the best governors in Nigeria. We have been observing everything you have been doing.
“It will interest you to note that NAFEST was established by the Federal Government as a platform to unite Nigeria after the civil war, and interestingly, the first edition was hosted in Lagos after the civil war and the East Central State won it. Since then, the only time the event was held in Enugu was 2008. That was 17 years ago.
“But it is coming back. We see what Enugu is doing and I want to commend it. We also see especially some of the investment that you are putting in the Awhum Water fall, the Nsude Pyramid Canopy Walkway and other great things.”
The Director-General, said the event, which would bring over 30 states of the federation and over 5,000 competitors and foreign participants to experience Enugu, would contribute to the economic growth of the state and empower the youth.
“Enugu has a lot of limitless possibilities. I watched the Enugu Tech Festival and I love it. Enugu has a lot of schools than many states in Nigeria and NAFEST has a capacity-building side that will empower and upscale the capacity of these young ones to give them opportunities into the future.
“There are opportunities in NAFEST for the creative people, digital people, the content creators, the poetry people. Enugu has a strong background in masquerade and wrestling. These are some of the elements that are part of NAFEST,” he concluded.
Reacting, an elated Governor Mbah, said NAFEST hosting rights furthered his administration’s agenda to bring 3 million visitors to the state, annually, adding that Enugu was purpose built for such events, given the aesthetic, landscape, and the topography, and infrastructural transformations going on.
“Enugu lends itself to arts and culture. So, this is a situation where opportunity meets preparation. I can assure you that you are going to have one of the most memorable NAFEST events because we are ready and we are hungry for it.
“One of the major transformational agenda of this government is to make here one of the top three economies and the premier destination for business, leisure, living and tourism. We have set a target to attract 3 million visitors every year. So, this is already like a marriage made in heaven. We are going to do everything to ensure that the objective of the NAFEST is achieved and we provide you with the environment,” Mbah said.
He equally highlighted the progress and huge investments in the security of lives and property, assuring all participants of their safety.
“Today, I can assure you that we are one of the safest states to live in because we have built infrastructure to ensure that we nip crime in the bud. But we are not resting on our laurels. We will continue to build on that,” he concluded.
…says Enugu moving from consumer-based to production-driven economy
In a groundbreaking move to reposition Enugu State as a premier destination for investment, Governor Peter Mbah has flagged off the Stallion Vehicle Assembly Plant and Automotive Infrastructure, saying the initiative was part of the administration’s effort to transition the state from a consumer-based to a production-driven economy.
Performing the symbolic foundation-laying ceremony on Wednesday in Owo community, alongside the Group Managing Director of Stallion Group, Mr. Mahesh Vaswani, and other dignitaries including Dr. Obi Ozor, Pharm. Chika Ugwuoke, Dr. Malachy Agbo, Mrs. Ngozi Enih and Hon Patrick Ubru, commissioners for transport, labour and employment, poverty eradication, children, gender and social development, and agriculture and agro-industrialization, respectively, Governor Mbah described the investment as a strategic step in the state's journey towards industrialization, innovation, and inclusive economic transformation.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the governor stated that the plant would initially assemble and deliver 2,000 hybrid sedans, with plans to begin bus assembly in the near future.
According to him, “Today’s groundbreaking marks the beginning of a new industrial era. Through our partnership with Stallion MG Automobiles Ltd - globally respected brand with decades of automotive experience - we are launching a state-supported programme to assemble and deliver 2,000 hybrid sedans, with plans to expand into bus production.”
Stressing that the plant would create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, such as engineers, service technicians, administrative staff, logistics providers, and retail partners, the governor said that the vehicles would support clean energy initiatives and serve as part of the youth empowerment taxi scheme for dignified employment.
“It will also serve as a training ground for the next generation of automotive engineers, with clear frameworks for technology transfer and skills development. Beyond job creation, we see this plant as a catalyst for something bigger; positioning Enugu as the automotive hub of the South East, Nigeria, and the wider West African region,” he added.
Governor Mbah thanked the Stallion Group for the partnership and trust in the state, reiterating his administration’s vision to transform Enugu, empower its people, strengthen the economy, and promote local productivity with global relevance.
He also encouraged young people in the state to seize the opportunity to acquire skills in the automotive industry and become global players, while expressing appreciation to the host community and stakeholders for their support and collaboration.
Speaking earlier, the commissioners for transportation, as well as the commissioner for children, gender and social development commended the project, noting that it aligns with the state's climate policy and action plan, which aim to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality.
They appreciated the host community for embracing the project, urging them to protect the infrastructure and cooperate with the company.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Nkanu East Local Government Area, Hon. Okechukwu Edeh, praised the governor for the bold reforms undertaken over the past two years, which he said were already attracting local and foreign investors to the state.
He assured that the council would continue to provide an enabling environment for investors and called for more investment opportunities in the local government area.
Describing the assembly plant as more than a launch, the Group Managing Director of Stallion Group said the project reflects a shared vision of innovation, collaboration, and economic growth for both Enugu State and Nigeria.
NEW: Governor Mbah receives EPL trophy, seeks Guinness’ partnership to grow sports in Enugu
...Why we choose Enugu - Guinness
Governor Peter Mbah has expressed his eagerness to partner with Guinness Nigeria PLC to accelerate his administration’s sports development effort, describing the state as the home of sporting legends, who have ruled the world of sports as well as home of abundant talents for the future.
Mbah spoke when a team of Guinness Nigeria’s management showcased the English Premier League, EPL, trophy, to him at Government House, Enugu, today.
It is recalled that Guinness Nigeria and the Premier League partnered to bring the iconic silverware for display in Enugu on Friday, May 16 and in Lagos on Saturday May 17 and Sunday, 18 to give EPL’s teeming fans in Nigeria the rare opportunity to experience the trophy.
Speaking during the presentation of the trophy at the Lion Building, Enugu State Government House, Mbah noted that beside putting in place legislative frameworks for sports development, his administration was also embarking on a massive reconstruction of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and Awgu Games Village preparatory to hosting the 2026 edition of the National Sports Festival.
“Like Guinness, we regard sports as a positive force in Enugu. We are not surprised that the Guinness flagship event is being held here in Enugu. Just like Guinness, we also see sports as a platform to foster social cohesion. We are not just paying lip service to sports; we actually have our skin in the game.
“We believe that the EPL is quite a spectacle with audiences across the world and you couldn't have chosen a better city for the flagship event than Enugu.
“Again, since here is the home of Rangers and since we have also recognised that this is where it all happens, let us begin to think about more collaboration with Guinness to see how we can secure endorsement with the Guinness corporate brand. This should be on the table because Rangers also won the 2023/2024 Nigerian Premier League title.
“We are just about giving the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and Awgu Games Village a new lease of life, making sure they meet FIFA and World Athletics standards ahead of the National Sports Festival. So, we look forward to more strategic collaboration with Guinness. We are quite a business-friendly state,” he stated.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation and the Corporate Relations Director at Guinness Nigeria PLC, Rotimi Odusola, described Enugu State as the spiritual home of sports in Nigeria, noting the exploits of Rangers.
He said it was only natural to choose Enugu for the display of the EPL silverware, given its history and the great job Governor Mbah had done in repositioning the state.
“Some may wonder why Enugu. There is a reason for us to choose Enugu as the first place in Nigeria since this trophy arrived yesterday. It is because we know that Enugu State is the spiritual home of football in Nigeria. As a young football lover, I can't forget all of the stories around Enugu Rangers football team.
“I want to also appreciate you for the work you are doing. The last time I was in Enugu was in 2022 and I have seen remarkable improvements in Enugu State since my last visit.
“This presentation of the EPL trophy is an opportunity for us to reinforce Guinness Nigeria being a business that has been intricate in the fabric of Nigeria for 75 years. We also want to use this opportunity to create magical moments for our consumers and members of the public through the collaboration between Guinness globally and the English Premier League,” he added.
Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, at the weekend, led other who-is-who in the state to celebrate elder statesman and a former governor of old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo
Speaking during a state event to mark the 85th birthday of Nwobodo at his Amechi Awkunanaw, Enugu, residence, Friday evening, Mbah recalled the octogenarian’s outstanding service to Enugu State, old Anambra State, Nigeria, and humanity in various capacities, describing him as an epitome of excellence.
“It will be difficult to find words that amply capture the true essence of what Dr. Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo represents. Your life is a living proof that the true value of existence is selfless service.
“Nothing endears one to his people than selfless service. That is what you epitomise. The men and women gathered here today to celebrate you is a reflection of that selfless service that you have provided for the people of Enugu State and Nigeria.
“Today, we celebrate an extraordinary journey. We celebrate 85 years of impactful life.
“As Governor at 39 years, you left bold legacies that are still evident today. As a Minister of Youth and Sport, your record remains unbeatable; and it's still a heartwarming reference point in this country. As a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, you were an epitome of courage and patriotism. We are indeed very proud of you.
“You are a priceless gift to humanity and to Enugu State and indeed our dear country. We are so blessed to have you. You have also provided a shoulder on which countless leaders stand on. You are a charismatic, yet unassuming leader; a man of all seasons,” the governor stated.
He wished him many happy returns in sound health and cherished moments so that the new generation of leaders could continue to benefit from his fatherly counsel and wealth of experience.
In his remarks, Nwobodo enjoined leaders to utilise the opportunities God had given to them to work for the people, citing the Mbah example in Enugu State.
“Today, Peter (Mbah) is a success. Whether anybody likes it or not. He is a success because the results speak for him. Whatever he is in Enugu today was God's design from time. God gave it to him. God inspires all that he is doing in Enugu today.
“Governor Mbah also listens. He really does. I suggested something to him not long ago. He reflected on it and told me that he would do it. Today, he is already doing it. That is how your know a leader that would go far,” the elder statesman said.
While thanking the governor for organising a state event to mark his birthday, Nwobodo said that Mbah had underscored the need to celebrate people while they are alive.
“I did not expect an elaborate celebration as this. But the governor insisted on celebrating me so well. He maintained that it was better to celebrate people when they are alive, to say all the beautiful things to their hearing. So, Governor, I thank you for this show of love and thank all of you, who came out in your numbers to celebrate me,” he added. Also, at the event were the former governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi; Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai; members of the Enugu State Executive Council; serving and former federal and state lawmakers, Council Chairmen under the leadership of the Chairman, Enugu State chapter of ALGON, Hon. Okechukwu Edeh, as well as the traditional rulers led by the Chairman, Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, His Majesty, Igwe Samuel Ikechukwu Asadu, among a host of others.
The Enugu Air, CNG Mass Transit Programme, and the ultramodern transport terminals all built from scratch by the Governor Peter Administration are to be launched for operation before the second anniversary of the government.
The government has also approved the development of the state’s tourism industry, while total transformation of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and Awgu Games Village will start in June to get them ready for the National Sports Festival to be hosted by the state in 2026.
These were made known by the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Obi Ozor; Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dame Ugochi Madueke; Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Gerald Otiji; and Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu after the State Executive Council meeting at the Government House, Enugu, at the weekend.
Briefing Government House Correspondents, Ozor said, “We are starting off with the initial three aircraft and two of the aircraft are already on ground. The third one will be on ground by the end of this month. We are hoping to start the commercial operations before the second year anniversary of this administration.
“You have also seen buses for the mass transit programme across the state. 50 of them are already parked at Okpara Square, and an additional 50 will be joining that fleet in the next few weeks. The 100 of them will be going into commercial operations before the end of this month, which is the second year anniversary.
“Also, the bus terminals, two at Holy Ghost, one each at Gariki, Abakpa and Nsukka, will also be commissioned and go into commercial operations before the 29th of May, this year.”
He added that the government planned to bring in the electric and CNG automotive manufacturing plant into Enugu as well as launch in the next 150 days the Enugu Smart Transport Programme, which would see to the injection of over 2,000 electric vehicles.
Also briefing newsmen, Dame Madueke said funds would be invested in the tourism industry in phases.
“We are going to have it in phases. For the first phase, we are having Awhum Waterfall, Nsude Pyramid where we are going to have the first canopy walkway in the South East. It measures about 600 metres, which will actually be the longest in Nigeria.
“We also have Ngwo Pine Forest where we are having the first zipline in Nigeria. The zipline will measure about 300 metres. In the same Ngwo, we will have a big rotunda and a smaller rotunda. We have the Cross of Hope to be located at Okpatu. The Cross of Hope will be sitting 580 metres above sea level and the cross itself will measure about 50 metres, making it a total of about 630 metres above sea level. The cross will have about 15 floors with a lift.
“At Awhum Waterfalls, we are going to have another canopy walkway and a boardwalk to preserve the ecosystem.
“We equally have the Akwuke/Atakkwu Waterpark and Ovu Lake Golf and Resort at Akpawfu,” she stated.
She explained that all the tourist sites would have experience centres, food courts and renewable energy, adding that tour buses would soon arrive to ensure ease of movement of tourists.
Ahead of the 23rd edition of the National Sports Festival, Enugu 2026, Barr. Ekweremadu said the State Executive Council had equally directed the commencement of work both at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and Awgu Games Village not later than June.
“We also briefed the council on the progress made in establishing a Lab for Animation for young people in Enugu State, which His Excellency will be commissioning soon. The lab is ready.
“We are similarly working towards empowering over 2,100 young people across the state, who were trained around December last year. This empowerment will be coming up on the 12th of August, being the International Youth Day’” Ekweremadu concluded.
Governor Peter Mbah has inaugurated the South East zonal office of the National Information Technology DevelopmentAgency, NITDA, saying it would open a new horizon for the youths of the region and move the nation closer to diversifying the economy.
Commissioning the office located at Nigeria Construction and Furniture Company (NCFC) Building at Onitsha Road, GRA, Enugu, Mbah commended the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, and the Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Abdullahi, for the initiative, promising close collaboration with the Ministry and Agency.
“The call to diversify our economy, both at the national and the subnational levels has never been more compelling than now; and there are a few sectors that hold the opportunities for us to accomplish that like the information and technology space.
“But, just having the opportunity without bringing them to fruition won't just cut it for us. The fact that opportunity exists, we must then take steps; and for me, I think that is what this NITDA presence in Enugu represents.
“It is an opportunity for our teeming young people to have the platform to imbue themselves with lifelong skillsets that would prepare them for the dynamic global workplace of today and tomorrow,” he stated.
Speaking earlier, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, expressed delight at what he described as an extraordinary technological revolution in Enugu State, saying the NITDA South East Zonal Office would serve as a permanent bridge between national policy and local potential.
“In just under two years, this state has emerged as one of Nigeria’s most promising frontiers for innovation. What we are witnessing here is not just progress—it is momentum; and I am proud that today, we are adding fuel to that momentum.
“This commissioning of the NITDA Regional Office in Enugu is far more than the opening of a building. It is the establishment of a permanent bridge between national policy and local potential.
“It is a strategic move under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu — a commitment to decentralising opportunity, deepening inclusion, and unlocking the full power of Nigeria’s digital economy across every region.
“By placing NITDA closer to the people, right here in the South East, we are saying clearly: no region should have to wait for innovation to reach them. Innovation must grow with them.
"This new office will serve as an engine room for digital skills development, through programs like the Three Million Technical Talent initiative; support for startups and indigenous tech solutions; regulatory advisory to help businesses thrive within the frameworks that protect Nigerians; and closer partnerships with state governments, academia, and the private sector. And there is no better place to launch this than in Enugu — a state that is not only dreaming of the future, but building it.
“I want to commend Governor Peter Mbah for proving what determined, technology-focused governance can achieve in such a short time. We are not just here to witness Enugu’s transformation. We are here to amplify it,” he said.
Tijani enjoined the young people of the South East region to grab the opportunities presented by the new office.
“To our young innovators, developers, and entrepreneurs - you now have a home in NITDA. Use it. Grow through it; and let it become the platform from which your ideas reach the world.
“Together, we will ensure that the story of Nigeria’s digital economy is not written from one place — it will be co-authored in every corner of this nation, and Enugu is leading the way,” he added.
The commissioning was also witnessed by the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, among other dignitaries.
… Governor Mbah: We’re driven by the knowledge that the future is technology
The 2025 Enugu Tech Festival being organised by the Enugu State Government kicked off on Wednesday with the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, describing it as the biggest technology conference that has ever happened in Nigeria.
Tijani said the Tech Festival, which attracted thousands of youths from within and outside the state, was a major leap for Nigeria’s determination to build a robust digital economy, noting that Enugu State under Governor Peter Mbah, had moved from policy to progress to lead the tech revolution in Nigeria.
This was even as Governor Peter Mbah urged the youths to embrace technology, insisting that the future is technology.
Speaking, the Minister said that the Tech Festival, tagged Coal to Code, fitted into the agenda and activities of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, having recognised that the future of digital economy in Nigeria would not only be built in Abuja, but would instead be co-created across all states.
“Enugu is showing how this should and will be done. I have never, never been to a conference on technology in Nigeria that is this big. I founded the first technology hub in Nigeria, the very first in Nigeria. So, I know a thing or two when technology people gather. I can assure you that today, you are part of history because we have never seen anything this big in Nigeria before.
“There is something powerful about your state: the energy, the ambition, the possibilities. Just two years ago, only a few people could imagine this kind of tech momentum. But today, Enugu has not just imagined, Enugu is building it. Under two years, we have seen investment in digital infrastructure, and the innovation ecosystem of the state.
“What is happening today in Enugu is part of something bigger. We are now witnessing a generational rise, not one where people complain and protest, but one where creativity is used to shape the future. Not just with passion, but with precision,” he stated.
While commending the participants for rising to “create the kind of Nigeria the world will pay attention to,” Tijani called for collaboration, commitment, and hard work by all stakeholders to make it happen.
“Progress is not automatic, but needs all of us. It needs the government to continue to be brave. It needs the private sector to invest deeper. It needs mentors, builders, teachers, and it needs leaders,” he concluded.
Speaking, Governor Mbah, while highlighting how his administration had invested in technology to dramatically revolutionise security, land administration, education, among others, noted that the Enugu Tech Festival was part of his government’s wider efforts to build the youth of the state into wealth creators and highly sought-after workforce of tomorrow’s workplace.
“The power of technology and innovation and what we can accomplish is something that I want the youths to be mindful of. If you look at the way things are being done in the world today, we are now talking about an era where people just sit down with great ideas, create platforms where they begin to essentially benefit from that platform.
“An example is the Uber that came and disrupted the city taxi without owning a key. Today, they provide by far the largest traffic just by creating a platform. You can extend that to Airbnb. Without owning a key, these guys have disrupted the business of those who own several brick and mortar houses. You can also extend that to Tesla. That is the power of technology. This shows essentially that technology is where the future is,” he emphasised.
… as Gen. Nwachukwu, Anyaoku renew call for true federal constitution
Former Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, has described Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State as an epitome of good governance, noting that the governor was genuinely and quietly transforming the state.
Anyaoku, however, stressed that visionary leadership and speedy development, such as being witnessed in Enugu State under Mbah, would become a mere routine with a genuine federal constitution.
The diplomat spoke at the 14th Chief Emeka Anyaoku Lecture Series on Good Governance, themed “The Imperative of Good Governance: Nigeria in a Global Comparative perspective” and organised by the board of Youth Affairs International Foundation at the Enugu International Conference Centre on Tuesday.
“Allow me the privilege of describing him (Mbah) as a truly performing governor. Yesterday, I was given glimpses of projects that have either been completed or in active progress towards completion. I saw, for example, this magnificent International Conference Centre. I saw an array of CNG buses at the Okpara Square. I saw the Smart Green Schools, which I gather that the governor’s plan is to replicate in every electoral constituency (wards), and I learnt that there are as many as 260 of them. I was also able to visit a state-of-the-art bus station, the Holy Ghost Terminal.
“So, I would say that Governor Peter Mbah is genuinely transforming Enugu State, which used to be described as a civil service state. He is transforming it into an industrial, educational hub and agricultural innovation.
“The surprising thing is that all these developments are going on with little publicity. I had expected, as my experience visiting many other states in this country has shown me that in places where you have two to three projects going, you will have massive publicity of them. But not so in Enugu. So, Governor Peter Mbah is not just a performing governor, but he is also a quite and noiseless performing governor,” he said.
However, he said that at 92, he regretted that Nigeria was still struggling with her pluralism and numerous challenges, warning that many countries that failed to address their pluralism with genuine federal constitution had since disintegrated.
“So, I have been quite consistent in advocating for a new democratic constitution for Nigeria, which addresses our plurality. This country was more peaceful and was developing faster in the first six years of our independence because it had a genuine federal constitution, which allowed the four regions to take care of their regional development, their social amenities, education, health, and internal security,” the octogenarian said.
To address the many challenges facing Nigeria and Africa, the Guest Speaker and Nigeria’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, called for a radical restructuring of the Nigerian federal arrangement to significantly devolve power to the people, a rejig of the leadership recruitment process, retooling of the state as a guarantor of security, unity, and ideals of equal citizenship as well as fashioning out of a new elite consensus, a complete overhaul of political parties, and a greater attention to constitutionalism, among others.
Speaking, Governor Mbah emphasised that “good governance – or lack of it – is often the fine margins between an ascendant state and one on a downward trajectory.” He, therefore, charged leaders to move beyond the realm of ideas into the realm of practicality and renewed his call for people-centred governance and investment in the youth.
“Good intentions alone do not translate to good leadership. Good leadership proceeds from the understanding that the people should be the centerpiece of state policies and projects,” he said.
Setting the tone for the day, chairman of the event and Nigeria’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Major General Ike Nwachukwu (rtd.), stressed the need for transformative leadership, which he said could not happen under the present structure of Nigeria.
“This is why I have long been advocating for the restructuring of Nigeria to become a proper federation, allowing State autonomy and bringing governance closer to the people. This also allows access to the mineral, natural, and human resources for their development.
“I stand for respect for the Rule of Law, the need for a forthright and independent Judiciary, a more effective, and responsive military, police and intelligence services.
“I also stand for the creation of State Police and local policing for our communities. And above all, a school system that allows relevant human resource development,” Nwachukwu stated.
Excited to endorse the 2025 Enugu International 42km Marathon happening tomorrow! This event reflects our shared vision of promoting health, unity, and global recognition for Enugu through sports. Our administration remains firmly committed to the development of sports at all levels. Just like last year, I reaffirm my participation in the marathon. Let’s run together for unity, health, and progress.
Governor Peter Mbah last night paid a condolence visit to the widow and family of former Nigerian international and coach, Christian Chukwu, in Enugu, assuring them that they were not standing alone.
Mbah, who was out of the country attending the Commonwealth Trade and Investment Summit in London at the time of Chukwu's death, also assured that the deceased would be immortalised.
He described the late footballer, popularly known as Chairman, as a legend, who served his country unreservedly and inspired millions of youths. He said the Government and people of Enugu, his home State, were thoroughly devastated by the death.
Speaking to newsmen after consoling the family and also signing a condolence register, Mbah said, "We have come here to commiserate with the family and also to express our devastation. We are just as devastated by his death; and his death is not just a loss to the family alone, it is a loss to all of us, particularly the government and the people of Enugu State.
"As you know, our beloved brother and legend, Chairman Christian Chukwu is a household name that inspired a lot of young people. He represents a lot of values when it comes to sport globally not just even in Nigeria.
"So, we are so devastated by his death, but we have also come here to assure the family that this loss is not just theirs, this is our collective loss; that we are going to be with them all through this period of grief, and that we are also going to ensure that his name is immortalised."
He also prayed for the peaceful repose of Chukwu's soul and for fortitude on the part of his family to bear the irreparable loss.
Also with the governor at the round leather maestro's residence were the Speaker, Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Uchenna Ugwu and the Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu.
Leaders of Enugu North Senatorial District otherwise known as Nsukka Zone have endorsed Governor Peter Mbah to continue in office beyond 2027, saying he has transformed the zone in less than two years of his administration.
The Nsukka leaders who converged on Adada House, Nsukka, yesterday, under the aegis of Enugu State Coalition for Progress, Enugu North Senatorial Zone branch, comprised a cross section of socio-cultural groups, the academia, representatives of traditional rulers, captains of industry, businessmen and women, politicians, market men and women, farmers association, labour leaders, among other leaders drawn from the 6 council areas of the zone, expressed their unwavering support for the Mbah administration.
In an interactive session by a panel of discussants from the groups which was followed by a communique issued at the end of the discussion and endorsed by over 700 signatories including former deputy governor, Chief Okechukwu Itanyi, Senator Chuka Utazi of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the deputy speaker of Enugu State House of Assembly, Ezeani Ezenta, Dr. Dan Shere, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, Gen. Godwin Ugwuoke (retd), Dr. Mike Ajogwu SAN, Chief Maxwell Ukuta, Prof Osita Ogbu, and Igwe H.N Ukuta, cited the litany of monumental infrastructural developments of the governor across the state, particularly in Nsukka Zone, as the reasons behind their endorsement.
In a resolution and vote of gratitude, the coalition commended the governor’s outstanding leadership and stellar performance since assuming office in May 2023, saying the only candidate the zone would support in 2027 is Governor Mbah.
They insisted that supporting Mbah to do eight years in office was in the best interest of Nsukka people as his re-election would enable him finish the landmark projects initiated by his administration in the zone which were already opening Nsukka for economic development.
The coalition further praised the governor for providing peace and security in Enugu State, making it an attractive destination for investment, business, and tourism in Nigeria.
“In particular, we note with satisfaction, that the setting up of the Enugu State Command and Control Center by His Excellency at the Government House for tracking criminal activities across the state has become a model for other states of the federation. We applaud His Excellency’s holistic development agenda for Enugu State anchored on his disruptive innovation philosophy as a catalyst for positive change,” the communique read in part.
While underscoring that the senatorial district has 102 electoral wards constituting 39.2 percent of the 260 electoral wards in the state, the elated Nsukka leaders said with 102 Smart Green Schools and 102 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres across the six councils, the zone has become the highest beneficiary of Mbah’s stellar performance.
On the ongoing dualisation of Enugu-Ugwogo Nike-Opi-Nsukka Road, the coalition described it as a critical infrastructure aimed at enhancing connectivity and boosting economic activities, adding that the reconstruction of the 44.8 km Ama Ngwo-Eke-Oghe-Iwollo-Umulokpa road and the new 40 km Owo-Ama Nkanu-Ubahu-Mbu-Neke dual carriageway would open up a new traffic and economic corridor to the senatorial zone.
It also noted that Mbah’s administration has transformed Enugu State from a civil service state to a fast-emerging industrial hub, with an unimaginable annual internally generated revenue of over N600 billion by the end of 2025. “The governor’s commitment to progress is evident in the rapid pace of development and transformation across various sectors, including roads, bridges, healthcare, security, tourism, entertainment, industries, and educational institutions.”
Throwing their weight behind the governor, Chief Ukuta said the people of the zone would not only queue behind him in the next polls, they also owed the governor apology for the herd mentality that almost led to the voting of wrong candidates.
Expressing confidence in the governor’s leadership ability, Senator Utazi said as an APC card-carrying member, he was at the meeting to particularly appreciate the good work of the governor, stressing that he deserved the unwavering support of the entire zone.
“I am a card-carrying member of APC starting from my ward in Nkpologu all the way to Abuja. I want to say that this gathering is not for PDP. It’s a gathering for every well-meaning Nsukka indigene who is appreciative of the good job the governor of Enugu State is doing in Enugu State and especially in Enugu North senatorial district. In fact, when I came back to Enugu, starting from the airport, I saw nylon roads, the type only seen in Abuja. When I visited the governor recently to discuss the police station I built there as a senator, the governor was immediately working to operationalize it, and is additionally working on the road from 9th Mile to Umulokpa. He also told me several things he was doing in Nsukka zone and all of them are what people can see on ground. Let’s support him to continue with his job. I want to say frankly that Nsukka people are happy with him,” the senator added.
Adding his voice, Dr. Ajogwu said the coalition had already spoken the minds of Nsukka people which was to support the governor for another term.
On his part, Ezeani, who led lawmakers from the zone, said the governor would continue to enjoy cordial relationships with the House of Assembly to ensure the continuation of the good governance in the state.
He described the Mbah administration as business unusual where new projects were springing up daily with many already completed across the state, adding that they had already declared unalloyed support and endorsement for his candidacy beyond 2027.
Lending his voice, Dr Shere lauded the governor for the transport infrastructure project which has the Nsukka Central Terminal Station, the Holy Ghost ultra-modern terminal stations, Abakpa and Gariki stations in addition with the recently delivered CNG buses ordered by state government.
“You don’t need to be told that in Nsukka, we are all adopting governor Peter Mbah to complete the job he has started here. Nsukka is now looking beautiful because of what he’s contributing to our economy, infrastructure, education and transport sectors. Look at the Enugu Air, it’s a game changing moment for the state. The investment prospects will impact all the nooks and crannies of the state. Again, the International Conference Centre, the ongoing 5 star hotel, the Hotel Presidential and the 300-bed international hospital in the state will make Enugu the hub of medical tourism where robotic surgery will be conducted and thousands of jobs created,” he said.
Moving a motion for endorsement of the governor for 2027, Chief Itanyi insisted that the ongoing 43.7 km dualisation of the Penoks-Ugwogo Nike-Opi-Nsukka road was the single most costly project in the state. The motion was unanimously affirmed by voice votes by the members coalition who filled the hall.
Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has charged Africa on robust regional collaboration and trade facilitation, insisting that Africa’s economic renaissance lies in extensive trade, not charity.
Mbah, who insisted that Africa had all that it takes to build its own table, rather than wait to be invited to the table, also tasked the continent on fully exploiting the power of intra-Africa trade and opportunities inherent in the African Continental Free Trade Area, AfCFTA.
He gave the charge on Tuesday while delivering the closing remarks of the session, “The Africa Opportunity: Regional Collaboration and Trade Facilitation,” on the second and final day of the 2025 Commonwealth Enterprises and Investment Summit in London.
At the session, which focused on how Africa could leverage the potential in its 1.3 billion population to boost trade and investment, the governor noted that such integration and trade facilitation had never been more compelling than now in the face of harsh global and existential headwinds facing the continent.
“Such large population, plus Africa’s combined GDP of $3.4 trillion and the fact that the continent has 65 per cent of the world’s uncultivated arable land means Africa should actually be building the table – and not waiting to be invited to the table.
“But one of the challenges lies in translating Africa’s remarkable potential into real economic development that benefits the continent’s people. One of the solutions lies in fully exploiting the power of trade, particularly intra-Africa trade. It would seem this was what AfCFTA came to fill.
“The World Bank estimates that AfCFTA could lift 30 million people out of extreme poverty, raise incomes for 68 million people, and boost Africa’s income by $450 billion by 2035. That is about 10 years from now,” he said.
He regretted that most of the objectives, including removal of tariffs and non-tariff barriers, for which AfCFTA was established, were yet to be actualised, wondering how Africa’s $40bn annual spending on food imports could be rationalised.
“The dream of a continent-wide common market remains as yet elusive. Despite our frameworks, deep-rooted structural barriers still exist: Only 14.4 per cent of Africa’s trade is intra-African, compared to 69 per cent in Europe and 59 per cent in Asia.
“Just seven per cent of Africa’s trade moves by air, yet we still face the highest intra-continental flight costs in the world. Over 70 per cent of goods are transported by road — but poor road infrastructure and border bottlenecks cost us over $4 billion annually in lost trade.
“Maritime transport is underutilised. Only one in ten African countries has a major port efficiently connected to inland markets. Rail systems – our most cost-effective bulk trade option — remain disconnected or outdated across most of the continent. These statistics are dismal, especially given that it is nearly a decade since the signing of the AfCFTA,” he stated.
Nevertheless, the governor said that “it is not all doom and gloom,” noting that it took the European Union over 35 years to launch its Single Market, but charged Africa to learn from the EU by taking action, prioritising regulatory frameworks, human capital, and infrastructure, among others.
“The EU did not just talk integration. They backed it with laws, infrastructure, and political commitment. Africa can learn from this. We cannot talk about building a common market when we are not yet connected — physically or digitally. So, the question is not what is wrong, but what must be done.
“We need more than political will. We need a unified legal and regulatory framework — one that harmonises trade rules, streamlines procedures, and builds confidence for businesses across borders.
“Second, investing in the enablers is critical – transport corridors, smart ports, cross-border rail, digital payments, efficient customs, and unified standards.
“Also, no nation ever rises above the sheer capacity of its human capital. It will necessarily entail fixing our education system. This is a development imperative.
“AfCFTA is not a feel-good creation. Let us not allow regionalism to become a barrier to a pan-African growth. Let us unite our markets, our ports, our rails, and our ambitions.
“So, the message deductible from the discussions this afternoon is that Africa’s economic renaissance lies in extensive trade – not aid or charity. Let us turn potential into performance. The time is now,” he concluded.
It is recalled that Mbah had during the first day of the summit organised by the Commonwealth Enterprises and Investment Council, CWEIC, on Monday, led the State Governors Roundtable session where he marketed investment opportunities in Enugu State to global leaders and investors.
The Enugu State Government has received 100 out of the 1,000 tractors ordered by the state governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, to boost agriculture in the state.
Another batch of 100 is also underway, while the remaining 800 will be assembled at the new Nortra Tractor Assembly Plant and Service Centre established by ODK Group, Danish firm.
Conducting newsmen on an inspection of the tractors in Enugu on Monday, the state’s Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialization, Mr. Patrick Ubru, said this was in fulfilment of Governor Mbah’s earlier promise to mechanise agriculture in the state, boost food production, create jobs, and drive the state’s GDP to $30 billion by 2031.
According to Ubru: “What you’re seeing here is a fulfillment of Governor Mbha’s manifesto on mechanising agriculture and ensuring that the agriculture sector in Enugu State takes a different shape and also ensuring that we increase our productivity up to 200 folds by ensuring that Enugu becomes the food basket of Nigeria. This can only be done through mechanisation.
“We have received 100 heads of tractors imported from Denmark through the Notra Tractors Company. Apart from the 100 we just received, they have assured us that in the next 60 to 90 days, another 100 will be delivered to the state, while the balance of 800 tractors will be assembled here in Enugu. We have also seen the implements that will accompany those tractors to the farm.
“The tractors have been tested at the farm estate in Akpawfu, Nkanu East Local Government Area. This model has an engine capacity of 75 horsepower and we have assurance that if we encounter difficult terrains, the company can increase the capacity to 90 horsepower”, he stated.
The commissioner explained that the Assembly Plant would have two production lines capable of assembling 10 tractors per day, with another section dedicated to practical training of tractor operators, adding that to ensure sustainability, the plant would also have a service centre for tractor repair and maintenance.
The Commissioner said the Assembly Plant alone will create 3,600 jobs.
Ubru also observed that the tractors would be made accessible to farmers, stressing that the government’s aim was to empower farmers and make agriculture attractive and profitable.
“A lot of job opportunities for our young people and a lot of value will be created. Prior to this time, our small holder farmers as well as commercial farmers found it difficult to apply mechanization process in their farm and that also hindered productivity. Going forward, tractors will be made accessible to farmers, farming will be easier and an attractive profitable business and no longer merely to satisfy subsistence needs.
Reiterating that the government was in the process of establishing 260 farm estates across the state, the Commissioner said that the estates would provide services for the small holder farmers and serve as centres where tractors could be easily accessed.
“The farm estate is going to be a one-stop-shop that will provide a lot of services for our small holder farmers. Each farm estate will have 200 farmers where we will provide mechanised services. This translates to 52,000 direct jobs. The farm estate will have a tractor shade housing the tractors so that the farmers can get the services of a tractor when they need it. We will have improved seedlings extended to the farmers, and the extension workers in each of the farm estate will provide extension services to the farmers”, he stated.
The commissioner further said that the Ministry of Agriculture was working out the modalities to enable the farmers to access the tractors in time before the next farming season commences in the state in the next two weeks.
Also speaking, the Chairman of All-Farmers Association in the state, Chief Romanus Anayo Eze expressed delight at the new tractors, saying the state had never seen such a large number of tractors.
“I thank Governor Peter Mbah for fulfilling his campaign promises, unlike others in the past, who would tell us they would do this and that, but they won’t fulfil it.
“When the governor said he would make provision for 1,000 tractors in the state, myself in particular and others doubted it. But what we are seeing today is different. For the first time, Enugu is procuring 100 tractors. We are so excited and farmers of Enugu State are happy.
“Since this year, farmers have been calling to ask for tractors, but today, with this, everyone is smiling and happy over this big development.
“This farming season, we are going to be farming with brand new tractors. So, I am happy because these are new ones that won’t break down.
“Before now, we did not have up to four tractors in the Ministry of Agriculture. Before now, some of those tractors could not leave the Ministry to the farm without breaking down on the way. That was what was obtainable before.
“Our promise is that with these tractors, there will be food sufficiency in Enugu State. There will be employment. Most of our youths will be gainfully employed through the farm estates he establishing in the 260 wards”, he said.
Governor Peter Mbah today welcomed the gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in the 2023 governorship election, Hon. Chijioke Edeoga, back into the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, fold, commending the ex-opposition flagbearer for demonstrating that politics is not a do-or-die affair.
Mbah said that Edeoga’s return to the PDP was in line with the party’s principle of reconciliation and making the people, not personal ambition, the focus of governance, urging him and his supporters to feel very much at home.
This was even as the former gubernatorial candidate endorsed Mbah as the popular choice of the people of Enugu State, stressing that he had fully aligned with that choice.
Receiving Edoega in his office, in the company of party leaders led by the state party chairman, Dr. Martin Chukwunweike, Mbah said, “Welcome back home. The symbolism of your action is a mark of the enduring bond that runs in our party. I am indeed very delighted to have you back to rejoin your family.
“What we are witnessing today is a result of fence-mending consistent with the philosophy of our party – the imperatives of reconciliation.
“It is also a demonstration on your part that politics is not a do-or-die affair; that what we are currently doing in Enugu State appeals to you and you believe that it is working for the interest of the people and you have taken that decision to say, 'Look, let us join hands together and serve our people.'
“I commend you greatly for making such a courageous bold step. The lesson for us is quite profound, as it shows that the common denominator even when we express our aspirations on different political platforms, is all about the people and making them the centerpiece of our ambitions.
“So, we will embrace you with our arms wide open. You are going to be treated as a member of PDP, which we know you are indeed. We look forward to working with you in the service of our people.”
Edeoga, on his part, commended Governor Mbah for making his return possible, describing it as a paradigm shift from politics of animosity and winner takes all to politics of empathy and people-centred development.
“I thank Your Excellency for overseeing the process that has culminated in my return to the PDP and my visit to your office. It is easy to downplay what has happened. But something like this has not happened in the annals of politics in Enugu State. I commend your wisdom, I commend your empathy, I commend your mental sagacity.
“What has happened here today will effect a paradigm shift in the way politics is played in Enugu State. It will no longer be winner takes all or politics being seen as a hostile or brutal activity. It has restored politics as just a contest of ideas and visions. These contesting visions were thrown open to the public and the people of Enugu State have made their choice, which I completely align myself with.
“Politics should be played without bitterness; it should be played without animosity and as much humanely as possible. Once the victor has emerged, the next thing is governance. The governance is ongoing and it is going very well. When it is time for politics, people are free to pursue their dreams. For now, it is time for governance.
“Anyone, who feels annoyed or deeply angered that Edeoga has taken this step of faith, I believe with time, they will align with the superior wisdom of those who are their leaders. Leadership comes with responsibilities and one of these responsibilities is to take a step of faith.
“Again, thank you for making my return to the PDP possible. I recommit myself to the ideals of PDP. As much as possible, I will work to ensure that PDP becomes victorious going forward,” he said.

The Enugu State Government under the leadership of Governor Peter Mbah has launched a climate policy and action plan to address the threats posed by climate change in the state.
The initiative, unveiled on Monday in Enugu, is titled “Enugu State Climate Policy, Climate Action Plan, and Climate Education Manual for Schools.”
It aims to provide a comprehensive framework for integrating climate action across various sectors in the state.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enforcing environmental best practices to tackle climate change in Enugu State.
Mbah—who was represented by his Deputy, Ifeanyi Ossai—stressed the urgency of developing a comprehensive solution, given the pressing realities of climate change.
He commended development partners for their role in actualizing the state’s climate action plan and policy.
Mbah also stated the importance of the climate education manual for students, emphasizing the need to raise awareness about climate change and environmental protection.
“For us to channel their intellectual capacity toward productivity and growth, we must provide an enabling environment and basic infrastructure to drive that development.
“We must do this in a responsible and environmentally friendly way, which is why this manual is critically important to us as a government,” he said.
Government to enact law against illegal tree felling The governor further emphasized the need for an attitudinal shift from deforestation to forestation to mitigate the effects of climate change.
He stated that the state government and lawmakers would collaborate to enact a law prohibiting illegal tree felling.
The governor also expressed gratitude to the Africa Climate Foundation (ACF) and the University of Bristol for their support.
Commissioner highlights importance of climate policy Prof. Sam Ugwu, the State Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, described the event as a bold step toward securing a sustainable and climate-resilient future for the state.
He noted that climate change had become a global challenge with consequential impacts on livelihoods and ecosystems.
“It distorts national and sub-national socio-economic values and activities,” Ugwu said.
He explained that the state’s new climate policy provides a comprehensive roadmap for integrating sustainability into every sector of the economy.
“It is a strategic framework designed to drive green investments, create thousands of jobs, and position Enugu as a leader in Nigeria’s low-carbon transition,” he added.
Experts and stakeholders weigh in The Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Policy and Sustainable Development, Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke, stated that Climate Smart Agriculture remains one of the key strategies to mitigate the devastating effects of climate change.
The Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, added that the government will inaugurate an implementation committee to oversee the execution of climate-related actions. Also speaking, Mrs. Juliet Chiluwe, the Chief Field Officer of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Enugu, commended the state for its Smart Green School initiative and commitment to climate action and policy.
She emphasized UNICEF’s role in ensuring the protection of child rights in the context of climate change, adding that the organization remains a critical stakeholder in advancing social protection measures.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has signed an Executive Order mandating the relocation of the Coal Camp spare parts and allied trades markets to the new International Spare Parts and Allied Trades Park.
The newly designated site spans Udi and Ezeagu local government areas along the Enugu-Onitsha Road.
The order, titled “Designation and Establishment of the Enugu International Motor Spare Parts and Allied Traders Park”, was signed in the presence of the state’s Attorney General, Dr Kingsley Udeh, and leaders of the spare parts dealers’ association at the Government House on Friday.
Governor Mbah assured traders that the new market was purpose-built with all necessary amenities, addressing the shortcomings of the Coal Camp Market.
“This new market is designed with world-class infrastructure, including safety codes, a fire service station, a truck park, a clinic, and residential areas for traders,” he said.
The President of the Enugu Motor Spare Parts Dealers Association, Chief Michael Nomeh, expressed gratitude, noting that previous administrations had failed to fulfil similar relocation promises.
“Since 1999, we have heard numerous promises to relocate us, but none were kept. Governor Mbah has proven to be a leader of action, fulfilling this promise in less than two years,” Nomeh said.
Dr Sam Ogbu-Nwobodo, Managing Director of the Enugu State Investment Development Authority, highlighted the strategic importance of the new location, stating that traders would now have the opportunity to own their shops rather than rent.
Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Mbah, has said his governance model was in alignment with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as 2030 Agenda in order to ensure the delivery of the democracy dividends in the state.
Mbah, who said this during the hosting of the Regional Stakeholders Consultation on Nigeria’s 2025 Voluntary National Review (VNR), South East, at the Old Government Lodge, Enugu, yesterday, disclosed that in compliance with the SDGs, his administration was committed to ensuring zero poverty headcount index, eradication of hunger through food security, affordability of clean water, hygiene environment and provisions of quality education and healthcare delivery.
Delivering his address, the governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof Chidiebere Onyia, at the event, themed “Advancing sustainable, inclusive, science- and evidence-based solutions for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals for leaving no one behind”, stressed that the SDGs were not just global aspirations, but a call to action for every region, community, and individual.
He maintained that the South-East, with its abundant human capital resource, entrepreneurial spirit and resilience, has a vital role to play in accelerating progress on the sustainable development goals in Nigeria.
In her keynote address, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, said that the participation of the South East region in the consultation was a clear demonstration of the commitment of the states to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigeria.
Enugu youths, under the auspices of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), have issued a stern warning to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Nyesom Wike, over his recent comments against Governor Peter Ndubisi Mbah.
In a statement released on Friday, the Chairman of the NYCN Enugu State Chapter, Comrade Chukwuebuka Bartholomew Okoh, expressed concern that Wike’s remarks suggested an intent to undermine PDP governors who do not align with his stance. He described such comments as unnecessary and dangerous to the unity of the party.
According to Okoh, statements like these only serve to weaken the PDP’s internal structure and distract from critical governance and development issues.
He emphasized that Governor Mbah has been instrumental in fostering the growth and stability of Enugu State, ensuring leadership remains focused on meaningful progress. He noted that attempts to discredit Mbah’s efforts through inflammatory remarks are not only unfair but also detrimental to the PDP’s cohesion, particularly in the South-East region.
The youth leader urged Wike to exercise restraint and adopt a more diplomatic approach when addressing party matters. He stressed that as a former governor and serving minister, Wike has an obligation to promote harmony within the PDP rather than fuel unnecessary conflicts that could derail the party’s objectives.
Reaffirming their support for Governor Mbah, the Enugu youth body called on PDP stakeholders to focus on strengthening the party’s structure instead of engaging in divisive politics. They maintained that unity remains the party’s greatest asset and should be safeguarded at all costs.
Full Statement from NYCN Enugu State Chapter: “The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Enugu State Chapter, stands firmly with Governor Peter Ndubisi Mbah in light of recent developments within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-East. At a time when collective effort is needed to strengthen the party, internal attacks and divisive remarks can only weaken the foundation we have worked hard to build.
“Governor Mbah has played a vital role in advancing Enugu State, ensuring that governance remains focused on real development. His leadership embodies fairness, stability, and strategic growth—qualities essential for both the state and the PDP. Any attempt to undermine his efforts through inflammatory rhetoric is not only unjust but also counterproductive.”
“We are deeply concerned about Nyesom Wike’s recent statements, which suggest an intention to disrupt PDP-led state governments that do not align with his views. Such an approach does not foster unity or strengthen the party. True leadership is demonstrated through dialogue, constructive engagement, and respect for differing perspectives.”
“The PDP has long been a party that encourages robust internal discourse, but this must be conducted with responsibility and respect. Party leaders must lead by example, choosing collaboration over threats and discord. The focus should be on strengthening the party’s position in the South-East and nationwide, rather than engaging in actions that create unnecessary division.”
“We urge Nyesom Wike to reconsider his stance and refrain from making further comments or taking actions that could deepen divisions within the PDP. As a former governor and serving minister, he has a duty to uphold unity rather than stir conflicts that could derail the party’s objectives.”
“Now, more than ever, PDP members must remain focused on the bigger picture—building a stronger and more effective political structure. We reaffirm our support for Governor Peter Ndubisi Mbah and encourage all stakeholders to work towards a more united and stable party.”
The Enugu State government has begun payment of gratuity to workers in the state civil service, who retired in January.
The Accountant General of the state, Mr Anthony Okenwa, confirmed this to newsmen in Enugu on Tuesday.
Okenwa said the gratuity payment was in line with the directive of Governor Peter Mbah to pay retirees, who had passed through biometric verification mandated by the state.
He added that the backlog of gratuities from 2010 to 2024 had been frozen for verification of workers who retired within the period.
“Mbah’s determination is to clear the arrears of inherited pensions and gratuities for all workers.
“As directed by the governor, we have started paying gratuities to workers in the state civil service who retired in January this year.
“The backlog of gratuities for those who retired between 2010 and 2024 will be paid in installments as soon as verification exercise for the retirees is concluded,” Okenwa said.
He said the governor’s directive was for all retirees to receive arrears of their pensions and gratuities in installments until they are completely cleared.
_As Commission lauds Mbah on speedy transformation of Enugu State_
Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has charged the South East Development Commission, SEDC, to build the region into a common market and also work towards common regional infrastructural development to make it a choice destination for investors.
This was even as he thanked President Bola Tinubu for setting up the Commission after many years of failed attempts, describing the president’s appointees into the Commission as persons with the requisite experience and skills to achieve results.
Mbah spoke on Tuesday when he received the Board and Management of the SEDC, who were at the Government House, Enugu, as part of the Commission’s stakeholders engagement tour.
“The South East Development Commission, in my view, is an idea whose time has come. We cannot thank the President enough for bringing this idea to fruition.
“I also see SEDC as a veritable platform to launch some humongous projects and grow the region into a common market. With a landmass of less than 30,000 km2 (square km) and a population of over 27 million, we can look at the zone as a market, rather than pick each state. So, we are hoping that the SEDC will help with the realisation of that common market concept.
“Again, if we treat the South East as a common market, we will begin to ask critical questions such as: what are those enablers we need in order for us to be able to move seamlessly from one city to the others? What are those key enablers that will activate or make it attractive for huge investments to come to the zone? So, I am glad to hear that you are already thinking of a multimodal means of transportation, whether to do a rail line, super highways and just making it attractive for huge investment to come to the zone,” Mbah said.
He promised total support for and cooperation with SEDC towards the actualisation of its mandate, noting that its agenda were in consonance and complementary to what his administration was already doing in Enugu State.
“I believe that we are partners in progress. We are going to work with you in any way that it will be necessary for us to achieve a common goal. On our part in Enugu, we have started a sector-wide transformative programme. What you have in your work plan is in consonance with what we are already doing,” Mbah concluded.
Earlier in their speeches, Chairman of SEDC, Chief Chukwuemeka Wogu, and the Managing Director of the Commission, Mr. Mark Okoye, represented by the Executive Director of Projects, Hon. Toby Okechukwu, commended Dr. Mbah’s speedy and wide infrastructural transformation of Enugu State.
“Your unwavering focus on health, education, and infrastructure has yielded impressive results. The enthusiasm with which you have pursued strategic development projects has garnered both local and international admiration, and your ambitious plans for power generation and other key projects reflect a clear vision for sustainable development. Today, Enugu State stands as an attractive destination for investors and a beacon of hope for its people,” Wogu said.
“We recognise the strides that Enugu State has made in economic development, industrialization, and infrastructural advancement. These efforts align seamlessly with our broader regional aspirations,” Okoye said on his part.
He listed South East Security Intervention Programme, South East Regional Economic Programme, South East Agro-Mechanisation Programme, Renewed Hope Housing Scheme, $50 million South East Venture Capital Fund, South East Youth Entrepreneurship and Empowerment Programme, Renewed Hope Community Social Impact Programme, South East Grassroots Recreation Infrastructure Programme, and Talent Development and Leadership Initiatives as high-impact programmes being championed by the Commission.
Nigeria’s first indigenous automobile manufacturing company, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing, has commended the Governor Peter Mbah administration in Enugu State on improved security and socio-economic infrastructure in the state.
The CEO of the firm, Innocent Chukwuma, gave the commendation while making a donation of four vehicles to the Enugu State Security Trust Fund at the Government House Enugu yesterday.
This is sequel to a recent fundraising dinner during which the Fund raked in well over N3 billion in physical and online donations.
Chukwuma, who commended Mbah’s huge investments in the security sector, noted that the administration had made Enugu increasingly conducive for investment, adding that manufacturers in the state were now happy and willing to contribute their quota in support of the government’s effort.
“I came to support the Security Trust Fund, as the governor is doing wonderfully well in Enugu State. And when I saw all he is doing, I was marvelled at the way he is working everywhere.
Manufacturers here are now happy. Even the areas that we could not enter during the rainy season, today we can enter and work anywhere.”
In his remarks, the governor expressed gratitude to Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Nigeria, promising to do more to continue to make Enugu State the premier destination for investment.
“We feel very excited as a government and this is what we have always talked about – partnership that works. And this could only happen because Innoson is a core stakeholder in Enugu State and he sees the value of investing and doing business in Enugu,” he said.
“So, we appreciate him greatly for donating to the State Security Trust Fund, providing two pick-up vehicles and two crossover vehicles.
That essentially enhances our capacity to fight crime and to ensure that the investing community and the investors are safe and secure in Enugu State.
“We are immensely thankful for your support and we are also committing to putting these vehicles to good use. We will continue to provide a safe and secure environment for the people of Enugu State,” he said.
Failure to comply with this directive will attract a fine of up to N50million.
The Enugu State government has announced a ban on the unlawful pasting of posters on outdoor surfaces and spaces within the state.
According to a statement issued by the Enugu State Structures for Signages and Advertisement Agency (ENSSAA), prior approval is now mandatory for posting or displaying posters in public or private areas.
"This is to inform all that henceforth, no person or entity should post or display any poster without first obtaining the written approval of ENSSAA," the statement reads.
Failure to comply with this directive will attract a fine of up to N50million.
The statement signed by Frank Aninwike, General Manager of ENSSAA, emphasised that the agency would no longer tolerate the defacing of outdoor surfaces and spaces.
According to him, the ban is empowered by the ENSSAA Law, 2016, which regulates the posting and display of posters on outdoor surfaces and spaces.
The statement partly read, “This is to inform all the political parties, churches, schools, printers, advertisers, marketers, producers and the general public that henceforth, no person or entity should post or display any poster on public or private structures, buildings, walls, highways or any outdoor surface or space within Enugu State without first obtaining the written approval of Enugu State Structures for Signages and Advertisement Agency (ENSSAA).
“Failure to comply with this directive amounts to a violation of Section 4(1,g), Section 33, and Section 34(4,9) of the ENSSAA Law, 2016, which empowers the Agency to control the posting and display of posters on outdoor surfaces and spaces, and to make regulations on the subject matter of this notice.
“Please note that pasting or displaying of poster without first obtaining the written approval of ENSSAA shall attract a fine of up to Fifty Million Naira (N50,000,000) only.
“We therefore urge all concerned to kindly comply with this directive as ENSSAA will no longer tolerate the defacing of outdoor surfaces and spaces,” it added.
Governor Peter Mbah has inaugurated the recently reconstituted Enugu State Local Government Service Commission, tasking the appointees on a productive and efficient local government system to ensure the success of the administration’s drive for inclusive development and prosperity.
The Commission has Barr. Nana Ogbodo as Chairman, Hon. Peter Nnaji as Member I, Mrs. Florence Igboji as Member II, and Dr. Bathlomew Ezeugwu as Member III, while Amaka Nweke is Member IV.
Osondu Nnaji is the Commission’s Secretary.
Inaugurating the members on Monday, Mbah said their appointments were predicated on the reputation, character, and track record of the new appointees as selfless public servants.
Describing the Commission as key in the delivery of good governance and democracy dividends, he said’ “One of the key things that is important is that whoever is to be appointed as Chairman or as Member of this Commission must be a person of unquestionable character and sound political judgment.
“I am sure that you are already aware that our development model is the one that recognises development at the grassroots. So, if you look at the interventions that we have done across the social services sector, you would observe that we have not left any part of the state out. If you talk about our intervention in the education sector, you will see that we are building 260 Smart Green Schools across the 260 electoral wards in the state. It is the same thing with the Primary Healthcare Centres, PHCs, and also the farm estate across the 260 electoral wards.
“What that does is that it puts an enormous weight and expectations on you. You have the responsibility to ensure that we have an efficient administration of our local government system.
“I have no doubt that given your track record and reputation, you will discharge yourselves creditably,” he stated.
On his part, Barr Nana Ogbodo, who spoke on behalf of his members, thanked Governor Mbah for the confidence reposed in him and other appointees, promising to ensure the delivery of effective and efficient services by Local Government employees across the state in order to actualise the governor’s overall vision of exponential economic growth and grassroots development.
“It is not lost on us that to whom much is given, much is expected. We reckon with the height the state has reached under your administration. We reckon with the supersonic speed that the state is moving. And we note that for us to attain that goal you established, which is to move the state from a $4.4b to $30b economy, every hand in the state must be on deck.
“As a consequence, we want to bring the local government system to appreciate that nobody is left out in this momentus movement and we know that in the end, our success will be a fitting one,” Ogbodo stated.
Ali Odefa has been re-elected as the Chairman of the South-East zone of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Odefa was re-elected on Wednesday at the South-East Zonal Congress held at Michael Okpara Square, Enugu State.
The congress was attended by delegates from the five South-East states, as well as notable figures including Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State and the chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, Adolphus Wabara.
Twenty-two positions were filled unopposed, while James Ugwu was re-elected as the Zonal Secretary.
Speaking at the event, Governor Mbah, the only PDP governor in the zone, emphasised the importance of unity within the party.
“When we describe the PDP as a great party, it’s not just a borrowed mantra. The party’s greatness is derived from its capacity to reinvent itself and retain its national appeal in the face of challenges,” he said.
He further noted that the South-East has always been a stronghold for the PDP and should remain so.
“We fully understand the demands and expectations of the people in a democratic setting. The bottom line is good governance. This is the ideal to which the PDP has committed from its inception,” Mbah added.
Speaking on behalf of the newly elected zonal executive, Odefa appealed to party members who may have been aggrieved by the process to unite for the party’s progress.
“We will make you proud. We have a fresh mandate of four years, and within this period, we will right all the wrongs in our party. Let us come together and build a party that all of us can be proud of,” Odefa said.
