Properties / Polystyrene; Alternative Building Material. by Tade722(m): 6:55am On Oct 03, 2022
Expanded polystyrene technology (EPS) more commonly known by its trademarked name, Styrofoam, is an extremely lightweight product that is made of expanded polystyrene beads. EPS foam is more than 95% air and only about 5% plastic. The most common use for Expanded Polystyrene is as a packaging material which not only secures the goods in the box but also acts as a shock absorber during transport.

While you might be familiar with Expanded Polystyrene as a packaging material, The best products with the highest margins are selling to the construction industry. Expanded Polystyrene is used both for insulation and as architectural mouldings.
Polystyrene (styrofoam) offer high level efficiency in construction.

Common profiles and shapes for architectural designs where Polystyrene are used include:
- Parapets
- Window Sills
- Decking
- Wall cladding
- Corbels
- Mid Bands
- POP
-Domes
- much more

Advantages of using Polystyrene in building includes;

1. Affordable: Polystyrene is cheaper when compared to conventional concrete.

2. Shapes & Sizes: EPS can be moulded in different shapes or sizes to suite your design.

4. Durable: EPS is highly durable and can survive in extreme temperature. It is non-biodegradable.

5. Weight: EPS is very light in weight. It reduces Load on a building.

Properties / What Are The Five Phases Of The Construction Life Cycle? by Tade722(m): 12:07pm On Aug 01, 2022
The five phases of the construction project lifecycle are:
Project Initiation and Conception
Project Planning and Definition
Project Execution and Launch
Project Performance
Project Close

1. Project Initiation And Conception
Like with all things, the first step to the construction life cycle is merely to begin. This may sound simple, but it is usually far from it. It is easy to come into a project with an idea. Translating that idea into actionable items requires a dedicated project team – the project will require input from each side.
Time is also of the essence. If there is a project idea in mind, it is best to immediately uncover the details rather than later set the stage for a successful project. If you are not sure when and where to begin, a feasibility test allows you to examine the project’s scope and goals and determine how realistic the project itself is.

2. Project Planning And Definition
Once the team or the feasibility test determines whether a project is worth undertaking, then the second step is the project's actual planning. In this phase, the project should be developed alongside its objectives and goals.
The planning stage may be the most critical, as it sets the foundation of the entire project. At this point in the project, your team will be tasked to define the project itself, identify timelines and uncover the project's scope from beginning to end.
It is essential not to forget the budget. The planning stage is where the budget is estimated, outlined and approved. A project team must dedicate the right time to the budget plan. It is often the most time-consuming phase in the entire project but ultimately establishes whether a project will succeed or fail.

3. Project Execution And Launch
Now is time for the most exciting phase of the construction life cycle – the project implementation. At this stage, all of the project planning and scoping is put to the test. Organizations and project teams need to ensure that their teams are on the same page, as any slight mistake in this phase can be damaging down the road.
Progress reports along the way will allow organizations to keep tabs on each part of the project, allowing project leads to make necessary adjustments along the way.

4. Project Performance
Once the project has begun in earnest comes the project performance and monitoring stage. In this stage, the project's performance is measured to ensure that it is running on schedule and within budget.
This phase requires daily supervision and a dedicated team of project and construction managers to track progress. Their job is to ensure that initial plans are up to snuff and to make any ongoing adjustments as needed. Information is vital in this stage, and it is up to the project leaders to maintain project alignment.

5. Project Close
To wrap up the construction project life cycle is the closing or completion phase.
This is the phase the project has led to, where project leaders must be ready to offer deliverables to their clients or present a completed construction project. Project leaders take on even greater responsibility during this stage, as they must finalize each aspect of the construction process, from scheduling to budget to final touches on the building or construction site itself.
Once the final inspections have been made, and the project leader has approved the close, the project must be approved by the client or site owner. Once the client accepts, the project concludes.

Continuation....

7. Suggesting or choosing various contractors for the construction project
Since most architects work closely with other building professionals like civil engineers, builders, and interior designers, it is easier for them to help the client in choosing experienced building experts that can help to execute the project.

8. Working hand-in-hand with other professionals to get the job done
After the architect has been able to successfully select the experts or contractors that he or she will be working with, he is saddled with the responsibility of working hand-in-hand with these professionals.
This is done by interpreting the design, supervising the progress of the building process, and ensuring that the design is made a reality as envisioned by the client.
The architect works with builders, engineers, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and other experts to enable them to do the construction the exact way it appears in the design. He also helps to explain any vague aspect during construction and monitor workers on how to adequately interpret the design.

9. Bringing artistic and creative elements to the construction
Since architects are creative in their way, they have the responsibility of ensuring that the construction is not only structurally okay but also aesthetically appealing.
Some buildings are creatively constructed to look like the shape of various objects. Such astonishing edifices can only be made possible by talented and super creative architects. Therefore, an architect has an important role to play when it comes to the aesthetics of a building.

10. Determining the features of the construction site to understand its limitations and potentials
An architect equally has the responsibility of visiting the construction site to be able to determine its limitations and potentials. This is an important role that’s usually performed to deliver a satisfactory job to the client.
The architect surveys or inspects the land and tries to determine the feasibility of implementing the designed construction. He looks at the possibility of how effective the construction will turn out once it’s completed. After doing this, he advises the client on the pros and cons that might accrue from the usage of the site for construction.
Also, architects who have added certification in land surveying will be able to determine how efficiently the soil can withstand the weight of the building to produce a solid foundation and structure. (My personal recommendation here is for your Engineer to do this, Engineers are better skilled here)

11. Help to ascertain the cost estimation or budget for the construction
Architects who have many years of experience in construction find it easy to determine the overall cost estimation of projects. They can offer a realistic budget to the clients after investigating the cost of materials and labor that will be used for the construction. Although this is the work of a quantity surveyor.

12. Help clients to obtain a permit from the government
Before construction work can be carried out in any state, you need to seek approval from the government of that state. This can be done by obtaining a permit or license to carry out the construction.
Depending on the structure and size of the building to be constructed, architects are often responsible for collecting permits from the government on behalf of the client. Oftentimes, they present the blueprint of the building to be constructed to the government for research and analysis before approval can be granted.
Properties / Tell Me Engineer; What I Should Know When Building My House. by Tade722(m): 5:27am On Jul 30, 2022
Reasons Why You Need an ARCHITECT (Part 1)

Over time, a lot of people tend to misconstrue the roles and responsibilities of architects, especially when it comes to building constructions.
People sometimes liken the role of an architect to that of a builder or civil engineer. Even though these professionals all deal with buildings or constructions in one way or the other, they all have their distinctive roles and responsibilities.

If you’re one of those people who don't seem to understand what the roles and responsibilities of an architect in a construction project are all about, you don’t have to look any further because we shall be giving you the answers in this article as you read on.

Who is an Architect?
An architect is a degree-qualified design professional who has received expert training on how to design, plan, and supervise construction processes.

Duties and Responsibilities of an Architect in a Construction Project

1. Provide counseling service(s) to clients
Aside from the architectural service they render to clients, they also provide counseling or advisory services to enable clients to achieve the best result with their construction.
They advise clients on the various steps to take with the construction sites and the type(s) of design that will work best for the building. This way, they ensure that clients can get optimum results with their construction.
In the same vein, an architect discusses the goals of the project and various design ideas with the client to ascertain their feasibility during the construction.

2. Draw design(s) for construction project(s)
Architects are saddled with the responsibility of drawing designs for construction projects. They are experienced professionals in drawing or designing homes, office buildings, shopping malls, among others.
They are also experienced in implementing bespoke designs as visualized by the client, while also advising about the advantages and disadvantages of such designs.

3. Design a building plan that fits all construction requirements
An architect is also responsible for ensuring that the plan is in line with the various requirements that a construction project needs, especially in the state or locality that the construction is to be done. Such requirements include fire regulations, building codes, building styles and structures of the construction location, and zoning codes.

4. Planning and developing the design
roles and responsibilities of architect in construction
After the final construction plan has been designed, the architect proceeds to plan and develop the design by working with other construction professionals. They make sure that the plumbing, structure, ventilation, and electrical and heating system of the building are positioned in their rightful places

5. Must be equipped with technological know-how
With the advancement in technology, most architects now use computers to produce digital designs via various architectural software. Modern architectural software like CAD and BIM have been able to assist architects to speed up their designs. Hence, an architect must be technologically savvy to produce digital blueprints for construction.

6. Knowing the various housing laws and incorporating them into the construction work
Every state has a set of laws or ordinances that guide the processes of building construction. An architect is responsible for knowing these laws and making sure that he or she incorporates them accordingly as the design is planned.
This will help to prevent the client from having any problem with the government or the law in the future, especially when it has to do with how the building was Constructed

Properties / Importance Of As-built Documentation. by Tade722(m): 3:16pm On Jul 27, 2022
Tell Me Engineer; WHAT I SHOULD KNOW WHEN BUILDING MY HOUSE.

More often than not in BUILDING CONSTRUCTION, What is eventually built in reality is often an edited version of what the architect has designed, some may ask, If you won't follow the architectural design 100% why bother at all?

Well, This happens due to a combination of real-world challenges like budget changes, scheduling squeezes, and the “surprises” that require re-designs and re-work. Even the smoothest building process and the most advanced BIM or VDC methodology will produce a building that differs from the original design.

Which is why as an Engineer I always recommend as-Built Designs or documentation.

What is as-built documentation?
As-built documentation is a drawing or a 3D data set that depicts the building as it was actually built.
An as-built data set includes all modifications, additions, and other changes made during the construction process. It will also include the exact dimensions and surveyed locations of all building elements, including the facade, features such as doors and windows, and building systems like pipes, ducts, and cables.

This is absolutely necessary because as I mentioned earlier the finished structure never (98% of the times) matches the design model perfectly.

What is As-Built documentation used for?

As-Built documentation has many applications for your clients, including:

- In Case of future maintenance; Companies that work on the building in the future, for instance, contractors, who need correct measurements and schematics in order to perform renovations or improvements.

- In Case of Sales or change of ownership; If you are like me, will want to know the history of the building and the exact dimensions of Building and location of Ducts and plumbing pipes.

- If you are Buying a House, you should request for the As-Built Documentation along side the approved design from the Real Estate Company you are buying from

- In Case of Facelifts and Remodeling; When carrying out Facelifts or Remodeling in the future, an intelligent Contractor will require the as Built Documentation so as to help him redesign the structure without compromising on the structural integrity of the building.

- General contractors, who need up-to-date records to demonstrate (sometimes for presentation) that they have produced the contracted work to the specified standards.

PS: Your Architect will/might require extra fee for As-Built Documentation if that not part of the contract agreement from the bringing of design.

Protests are supposed to be the public voice of the people but in Nigeria has been viewed as an act of going against a seating government or an attempt to unseat a government which is why a lot of people are so scared to be involved in it.

Protest is part of Democracy, this government has also failed in this regard.

That white stuff you find in your new electronic gadget that yorubas cal FUKE-FUKE is actually called Styrofoam or more technically refered to as Polystyrene.

Polystyrene is fast becoming a vital part of our construction projects, although it has been for many years but several Nigerians are still skeptical about it's Durability, and structural viability.

Here we used polystyrene profile and wire mesh to make fins rising up to 9m high.

And a 6m fiber mesh panel for wall fins.

We produce other polystyrene profile for several construction projects.

When it comes to Construction in Nigeria most Engineer and Architect must have heard about polystyrene at one point or the other.

While many people have accepted this product and used it, Several other are EPS averse.

I would like to get your general thought about it as an Engineer or Architect or Builder.

Are there applications these products these product should be limited to?

Well I am not disproving what you said, because you can get your material at a high price.
But from my work, I is cheaper Sir even when I tell my clients that price should not be a factor when doing decking, structural stability should be.
I can tell it is cheaper Sir

everything BUT the cost - it's actually more expensive.... (talking from practical use)

Very true though.

I don't have any video at the moment.
Last project we did, I only took pictures, I will ask my colleagues if anyone have videos.

When I find on, I have I'll make sure to post it on here.

Thanks

It would be nice if you can share a Video of the START-FINISH of a Decking, using this method so that one can compare it with normal Cement/granite decking.
I think a lot of people will like to try it but are still skeptical of the process and cost implications, due to lack of adequate knowledge of it.
A Video will answer all questions without any iota of doubt.

Good afternoon,
That is really one of the major reason people use EPS technology.
Using EPS for decking actually, help reduce the weight of the decking because
1. You reduce the size of rod needed Y10 can be used in place of Y12.
2. The volume of concrete required is reduced. However, you will have adequate columns to carry the next decking.
3. Make sure to have a good structural engineer look through your design and also supervise your project. Using EPS for decking require more expertise.

I hope I answered you question though?

Thank you

THE BENEFITS OF USING POLYSTYRENE (EPS) DECKING BLOCKS

EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE(EPS) serves as a permanent shutter to hold the concrete in place, these EPS blocks are used widely in construction.
They have no structural value, but is necessary for purchase and is used as thermal insulation and a void filler when pouring concrete slabs.
Light weight and easy to install with great thermal properties these Decking Blocks are a necessity for the building process. EPS blocks are a cost effective method of permanent shuttering and recyclable having no negative impact on the environment. Below are seven more benefits of applying Polystyrene (EPS) Decking Blocks.

1. Better acoustic and thermal properties, thereby reducing energy consumption which in turn saves money.

2. EPS is cost effective relative to concrete and cement blocks.

3. Easier and quicker to handle and install requiring less propping. This also results in a reduction of the amount of concrete used.

4. EPS blocks remain as permanent shuttering.

5. EPS is environmentally friendly and 100% recyclable. We also only use fire retardant material that complies with building regulations.

6. Due to the light weight structure of the EPS blocks, less concrete beams would be used as would be the case in a normal insitu building.

7. EPS blocks are resistant to vibration, aging and rot and are Chlorofluorocarbons and hydrochlorofluorocarbons free.
As such there are no Ozone depleting elements in EPS.
